Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Whether you're hauling construction equipment or you're carrying your ATVs to the mud park, towing heavy-duty loads can be an intense job. You definitely don't want to have to deal with sharp, jolting movement every time your trailer hits a bump. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock. This can result in a rough ride for you and your cargo. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Spartan from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

gooseneck torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

Built into the Spartan are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 5" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 5" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

scale upright

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (5,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 4,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Michael: Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at the Gen-Y Spartan Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. This is going to allow you to have a nice, smooth ride when you're towing your heavy duty equipment trailer or toy hauler. It is going to work with your 2-5/16" Ball. This does have a pin-style latch here that will make sure that the ball stays in your coupler socket and gives you a nice secure connection.

On the top side here, we do have a nice sturdy inner tube. That's going to slide into your outer tube to connect your gooseneck coupler to your trailer. This is right at four inches in width. So it will slide into that opening. You can see on the side here, we do have three different height adjustment holes.

These are spaced out about two and three quarters of an inch apart from center to center. So it's going to give us a total height adjustment of five and a half inches. This is made of a heavy duty steel construction. So it's going to be a very strong, hold up well for us. It also has a powder coat finish to help resist any rust, wear, corrosion, those kinds of things. And so it's going to do a good job for us.

With that heavy steel construction it's going to give us a maximum gross towing weight of 25,000 LBS. So that's the trailer and the load that you have in it. We have a vertical load limit, which is the downward pressure on our gooseneck ball of 5,500 LBS. Keep in mind for these shocks to work properly, you will need at least 4,000 LBS to really engage those so that they'll smooth out that ride for you. So between 4,000 and 5,500 is the optimal ride for your vertical load.We do have a little indicator here.

And this is going to be your tongue weight scale. It's built in to help make sure that your trailer is balanced. So if you need to adjust the load before you tow, so that's going to be a good indicator. If you need to put more weight or take some of the weight off of the tongue weight there. For our shock absorbing features, it's kind of the main feature for this gooseneck coupler. So you can see that we've kind of got an arm here. This is going to give us a little bit of an offset. So it's going to give us a little bit more clearance from our cab to our trailer. It's right about five inches from the center here to where our ball is going to be. Maybe just a little bit more than five, but at least five inches of extra clearance there. And these are really what's going to give you that nice shock absorbing feature. They're kind of like torsion axles, if you're familiar with those. They've got these rubber cords that go inside here with a square bar. So as your coupler or your trailer hits turbulence, or you're a truck hits some bumps on the road or something, that bar inside there is going to twist, and it's going to have resistance because of those rubber cords. So it's going to help absorb a lot of that shock. So it's not being transferred from your trailer to your truck or vice versa. A nice thing about those is, there's a lot fewer components that could fail for you. So you're not going to have to maintain them like your airbags or some of your other shock absorbing solutions. These do have a maximum travel at our pivot points of two inches. So they're going to give us a nice amount of shock absorbing so that we're going to have a nice, smooth ride as we're going down the road. This is made here in the USA and it does come with a five-year limited warranty. So if you we're to have any problems with it, you could give us a call and we'd help you out with that. But I really don't think you're going to have any problems. Gen-Y has a reputation for building very solid components. So I think this is going to be a great option for those of you who do have some heavier equipment that you're wanting to haul. You're tired of having all that vibration and force being transferred up to you as you're driving, making it less comfortable. I think there's going to be a great option and make the ride a lot more enjoyable for you.So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Review from a similar Spartan GN Coupler in Gooseneck Coupler

Holes in hitch don’t line up with the hole in tube on my 2018 MAXXD Trailer. With holes lined up the hitch is offset towards passenger side of truck. Was really looking forward to working this hitch. Very disappointed

There are situations where the existing outer tube of the gooseneck couple will not have the correct holes to line this adapter up with. It is okay to slide this inner tube into the outer tube aligned correctly and just tighten the set screws. You will not use the pin in this case.

Ask the Experts about this Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Coupler

  • Can I Use Gen-Y Gooseneck Couplers in the Reverse Orientation?
I contacted Gen-Y, and they stated that using their gooseneck couplers, like the Spartan # 325-GH-7072 you were looking at, in the reverse direction with the coupler tube facing the cab of the truck instead of the tailgate is not recommended. They did say that using it this way could be possible and would not void the warranty on the coupler, but there could be issues with your weight distribution with more weight being placed in front of the rear axle. I cannot recommend going against...

  • Offset Coupler Solution for Horse Trailer
I wish we had something that matched what you need but none of the offset gooseneck couplers we offer have forward facing mounting holes. They all have holes that go from the sides. For a cushioned coupler setup with a 5 inch offset that comes with an outer tube too that you can weld in place of what you have you'd want the part # 325-GH-7072.

  • Gen-Y Pegasus Gooseneck Coupler With 11 Inch Offset for Square Tube
Gen-Y does offer some Spartan Couplers for a square tube like the # 325-GH-7072, but it only has a 5" offset. At this time, they do not offer a model with the greater offset for a square tube. In order to utilize the coupler with the 11" offset , I recommend replacing your square tube with a round tube like the # BD0233100300 Replacement Bulldog Gooseneck Coupler Outer Tube. This will require welding so I recommend hiring a professional welder who has experience with this type of work....
