Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Whether you're hauling construction equipment or you're carrying your ATVs to the mud park, towing heavy-duty loads can be an intense job. You definitely don't want to have to deal with sharp, jolting movement every time your trailer hits a bump. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock. This can result in a rough ride for you and your cargo. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Spartan from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

gooseneck torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

torsion

Built into the Spartan are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 5" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 5" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

scale upright

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (5,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 4,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Coupler - Coupler with Outer and Inner Tube - 325-GH-7062

Today, I want to take a look at the Gen-Y round gooseneck coupler with the shock absorption and the five-and-a-half inch offset and a 25,000-pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this is a sturdy inner tube that will pair with your existing outer tube on your trailer to create a gooseneck coupler for hooking your trailer up to your truck. Has the staggard adjustment holes, you can see here on the tube. Accommodates your outer tubes that have pins in different positions, and this one does come with the pin and clip to install it. This is a shock absorbing design. It's designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a nice safe, smooth and stable ride.

You can see the multiple pivot points right here. There's two of them with the coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler and the top tube of your coupler. The internal construction right here of those pivot points acts like a torsion axle, and limits transfer of road shock from your truck to your trailer and vice versa. So, there's no need for any airbags to maintain and you have fewer moving parts to repair or replace than with other shock absorbing solutions. Now, the offset design of this coupler, you can see here's your coupler, it mounts to the ball.

Here's the inner tube. Gives you five-and-a-half inches of extra clearance between your truck cab and trailer. Has a self-latching lever right here that will connect to the hitch ball, and it lets you easily uncouple from outside your truck bed. You can see it includes this cable that attaches to that lever, and you can install it to where you can just pull it to disengage the latch. Has ...

Let me turn this around. It has a built-in mechanical weight scale at the very back here.If I spin this all the way around, right up here. This is help you balance your trailer. Too little or vertical load can cause the trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance. So, this meter right here, this will let you know if your load needs to be adjusted before you tow.

The highest arrow setting on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load, which is 5,500 pounds. The lowest arrow on that setting indicates no vertical load, zero pounds. So, you do want a vertical load of at least 3,000 pounds. That's recommended for built-in shock absorption to function effectively. So, that mean on your scale here, you want that scale's right indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up to your trailer to tow. Now, this is a nice low profile design. It's great for high bed trucks. It's made of a heavy duty steel construction, has a really nice powder coat finish to it that resist wearing corrosion. It is made in the USA. Few specs on this, the ball size it fits on is your standard gooseneck ball size of two-and-five sixteenths. Also, I want to try to spin this around to show you right where the coupler attaches to your ball, right down here. I don't know if he could see it, but there is a zerk fitting, a grease zerk fitting that will allow you to attach a grease gun and lubricate the latch that connects to your gooseneck ball. Gross towing weight capacity on this is 25,000 pounds. The vertical load limit we mentioned maximum tongue weight is 5,500 pounds and again, the optimal vertical load capacity should be 3,000 to 5,500 pounds. The range of vertical adjustment when you use it in the outer tube with these holes is eight inches. The offset we had mentioned, as measured from the center here to where your coupler is. So, you can see if we put a ruler on that center, it's going to get you about five-and-a half inches of offset extra clearance. The maximum travel at these pivot points, these two pivot points that go up and down os about two inches and the round tube here, the outer diameter is four inches. Does come with a nice set of detailed instructions that will describe how this operates. But that should do it for the review on the Gen-Y round gooseneck coupler with the shock absorption, five-and-a-half inch offset, and the 25,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.

  • Can Gen Y Offset Gooseneck Shock Absorber Be Turned Around
While it is possible, I contacted Gen Y who confirmed they do not recommend this for a few reasons. The first reason is that it will not give any TORSION-FLEX benefits while stopping or starting and the second reason is that they have not tested it to be used in this manner. If the manufacturer does not recommend it it means it would void the warranty on the product. That being said, they have had customers use it in that way and have had success with it.
