Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

The last thing you want is for your horses to get jostled around while you're on the road. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock, which can result in a rough, uncomfortable ride for you and your ponies. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Pegasus from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.


Built into the Pegasus are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 11" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 11" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Designed for Recessed Hitch Balls

This gooseneck coupler is specifically designed for flatbed trucks that have the hitch ball mounted beneath the bed. The bottom portion of the tube on this coupler is longer than that of a standard gooseneck coupler so that it can easily reach the recessed hitch ball.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 3,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Michael: Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at the Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. This is going to provide a four inch diameter inner tube. That's going to slide into your existing outer tube on your trailer and will provide that gooseneck coupler for hooking up your horse trailer to your truck. This does have staggered adjustment holes, here on the side.

So it will accommodate outer tubes with pins and different positions. So it should work for your setup. And this is a shock absorbing design, which is going to be the most important thing to make sure that your horses are going to be comfortable. And it's going to make it more comfortable of a ride for you because we do have these pivot points here. So you can see that our inner tube is separated from our coupler.

You have these arms that connect them.And at those arms, we've got pivot points. Those pivot points act like torsion axles. So there's a square bar inside there with rubber bands on the corners of it. So as those pivot points twist, they resist against that rubber. So it's going to help absorb some of that shock and make sure that the shock isn't transferred from your trailer, up to your truck and vice versa.

So it's going to make the ride much smoother for you. You can see, we do have an offset design as well. So from our coupler back to our center tube here, it's going to be about 11 inches. So that's going to provide more clearance for your truck cab and trailer, so that you can make tighter turns. And those sorts of things, our coupler is going to secure onto a two and five 16th inch hitch ball with the pin style latch here.So very easy to get connected, this model does have an extended length here.

So it's going to be ideal for trucks with a recessed hitch ball. So you have a little bit more length there to get that fit on. Now, there are several different models of the Pegasus. The Pegasus line is all designed for your horse trailers, but the main difference between them, is going to be the weight of your trailer. So with these torsion type pivot points here, you want to have the sweet spot. You don't want to have too much weight, or it's going to overwhelm the system, and it's not really going to do anything for you, but you don't want to have too little weight either, because then it's going to be really rigid and it's not going to fully engage, the way you want it to.So this model, specifically, is designed for a gross towing weights of 25,000 pounds. It gives you a vertical load limit, the maximum tongue weight of 4,500 pounds, but that optimal ride, vertical load is going to be between 3000 and that 4,500. So that's going to be your sweet spot, that you want to make sure that you're riding within. So that's the torsion pivot points can function correctly. Now on the backside here, we do have a indicator, zoom in for you a little bit, so you can see that better. So that is a tongue weight scale and it's built in. So you can see we've got a little line there and where that's lining up with our red, green or red is going to help us figure out if we need to readjust our load when we get it hooked up, so that we know that we're going to be right within that sweet spot, so that it's going to be a nice, smooth ride for us and the horses.Now, if you're not familiar with Gen-Y, they do have a reputation for overbuilding their products. So they're going to be extremely durable, very rugged, for you. This is made here in the USA. It's made with high quality steel and a powder coat finish to resist against rust and corrosion. So as far as durability, you're going to be very happy with it, I'm sure. It is pretty hefty to get put in place, but once you feel it, you'll see what I'm saying. It is a well-built, very beefy coupler for your gooseneck. So it should do a good job for you. Like I said, you just want to make sure that it's going to fit your trailer needs, to be sure that it's going to ride in that sweet spot, so that you and the horses are more comfortable as you're going down the road.
