Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

The last thing you want is for your horses to get jostled around while you're on the road. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock, which can result in a rough, uncomfortable ride for you and your ponies. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Pegasus from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

pegasus torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

Built into the Pegasus are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 11" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 11" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 3,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Coupler - Shock Absorbing Coupler with 11 Offset - 325-GH-7046

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. This is gonna replace the Gooseneck Coupler on your horse trailer. This is gonna still fit right onto your two and five 16th inch hitch ball in your truck is going to slide right into your four inch diameter outer tube on your trailer. And you can see, we do have several different pinholes to accommodate different orientations of pinholes on those outer tubes.

So, very easy to get installed. This is gonna provide several different features that will make this a huge upgrade for you, on your horse trailer. One feature, is that because our coupler and our inner tube for our trailer are separate components. We are gonna have an offset here. So, from our coupler ball to our trailer tube, it's gonna be about 11 inches.

Which is gonna be big for those of you who have short bed trailers, you need a little extra clearance, for those tight turns to make sure that you're not having contact between your trailer and your cab. So, that's gonna be one feature there. The main feature is obviously gonna be that shock absorbing capability. So, the way that comes about, you can see with our two separate components, they are connected here with these cross arms here at the pivot points. It's gonna function kind of like a torsion axle if you're familiar with that concept.

So, there are square bars inside there that have a rubber cords around them. So, as a square bars pivot and move, rubber is going to engage and kind of absorb that shock. So, our road shock is not gonna transfer from our truck back to our trailer, where it could potentially bother our horses and vice versa. It's not gonna transfer it from our trailer up to a cab. So, it's gonna be a much more comfortable ride for us as well.

So, this is a really nice coupler for you for your gooseneck horse trailer. This is gonna be a nice sturdy steel construction. It's going to give us a gross towing weight of 25,000 pounds. That's the trailer and load included. We're gonna have a vertical load limit or a max tongue weight on our ball of 4,500 pounds. But to ensure that that torsion system is going to engage properly, you're gonna want at least 3000 pounds. Otherwise, it won't fully engage those torsion connection points there. To help you with that they do include this tongue weight scale. So, you can see, we've got our white marker line and our red either side of our green. So, as we apply weight that is going to pivot. We want to make sure that that white line is lining up with that green to ensure that the system is all gonna engage properly. So, it's nice that they include that for you. This does have a powder coat finish. That's going to resist wear and corrosion. So, it should last you for a nice long time. As far as maintenance goes, because this doesn't utilize airbags, like some other systems do. That's really gonna be very low maintenance. You're not gonna have to worry about keeping air pressure in the bag or anything like that. And with those torsion axles, once you get it installed, they're ready to go. You're really not gonna have to do anything to it. Other than, you know, just your standard. Spraying it down when it gets dirty and that sort of thing. This is made here in the USA. So, you can trust it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know. And trust for products that are made here. Gen-Y does have a great reputation of building solid heavy-duty products. And this is no exception. It is probably gonna take a couple set of hands to lift it up and put it in place on the outer tube of your trailer. But once you get it installed, I think you'll be very happy with it, with the shock absorbing capability help keep your horses happy and make it a little bit more comfortable for you as well. So, that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

  • Gen-Y Pegasus Gooseneck Coupler With 11 Inch Offset for Square Tube
Gen-Y does offer some Spartan Couplers for a square tube like the # 325-GH-7072, but it only has a 5" offset. At this time, they do not offer a model with the greater offset for a square tube. In order to utilize the coupler with the 11" offset , I recommend replacing your square tube with a round tube like the # BD0233100300 Replacement Bulldog Gooseneck Coupler Outer Tube. This will require welding so I recommend hiring a professional welder who has experience with this type of work....

The Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler part # 325-GH-7046 or part # 325-GH-7047 for recessed is designed for round outer tubes with a 4" inner diameter. If this is what the trailer has then it will work well. In regards to truck clearance, this isn't so easy to predict. It will take measuring from the user as every trailer and gooseneck/truck combo will be different. I have attached a formula below.
