Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Whether you're hauling construction equipment or you're carrying your ATVs to the mud park, towing heavy-duty loads can be an intense job. You definitely don't want to have to deal with sharp, jolting movement every time your trailer hits a bump. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock. This can result in a rough ride for you and your cargo. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Spartan from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

gooseneck torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

Built into the Spartan are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

This type of shock-absorption system is easy to maintain. Just regularly apply grease to the built-in zerk to keep the components in working condition. No airbags to fill. No small parts to repair or replace. No hassle.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 5" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 5" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Designed for Recessed Hitch Balls

extended base

This gooseneck coupler is specifically designed for flatbed trucks that have the hitch ball mounted beneath the bed. The bottom portion of the tube on this coupler is longer than that of a standard gooseneck coupler so that it can easily reach the recessed hitch ball.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 2,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Coupler - 25k Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler - 325-GH-7011

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a quick look at this Gen-Y Spartan Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. This is going to replace your current gooseneck coupler on your gooseneck trailer. And the reason that you would want to switch it out is because of the shock absorbing features here. So this is going to be a really easy switch out for you.

It's got a 4 inch by 4 inch tube here that will just slide right up into your trailer's outer tube and the square outer tube. It does have several different height settings here so you can adjust the height by up to 5 3/8 of an inch total span there just depending on where you have that pin hooked up onto the outer tube. So that extended length is going to be really ideal for your trucks with a recessed hitch ball. And it will allow you to have extra links there. But of course the main feature here is the shock absorbing capability.

So you can see that our tube that's going to go up into our outer tube on our trailer is separate from the coupler that's going to sit on our gooseneck ball and they are attached by these arms here at the attachment points between our posts and our arms. These are going to function like a torsion axle at these pivot points. So if you're familiar with that concept, there is like a square bar inside here with rubber cords all around it. So as you hit a road shock, those bars are going to twist but the rubber is going to absorb that movement. So it's not going to transfer your road shock from your truck back to your trailer and vice versa.

So it's going to be a much smoother ride for you and anything that you have in your trailer. These pivot points are going to have a maximum travel of two inches when it's under load. So it is going to be moving quite a bit to help absorb any of that road shock that you might experience. And unlike some of your other options that kind of cushion your ride like airbags, these are not going to require any sort of maintenance. So your airbags, you're always going to have to make sure that they have enough air pressure in them and adjust them to accommodate for your load.

These are just going to work right from the start just get it installed and it's automatically going to start working for you. This will give us a maximum gross towing weight of 25,000 pounds. Of course, that is the weight of the trailer plus the load included. It's going to give us a maximum vertical load limit or max tongue weight of 3,500 pounds. But because these torsion axles do need a minimum amount of weight to fully engage, you're going to want to have at least 2,000 pounds so your optimal towing weight is going to be between, sorry, optimal tongue weight is going to be between 2,000 and 3,500 pounds to make sure that that is really gonna engage properly. To help you out with that, they do have this tongue weight scale here built-in so that you can make sure that your trailer is going to be balanced correctly. So you can see at the top and bottom we've got those red bars. And then right here on our line, we want to make sure that that line is lined up with the green portion. That's our safe portion. So you'll know that it's within that optimal tongue weight. So once you get everything weight loaded down, you want to make sure that that white line lines up with that green portion to make sure that everything's going to engage properly and give you that nice, smooth cushion action. Another benefit here, because our coupler and our posts are offset from each other and that's going to give you a little bit more clearance of about five inches of clearance. So if you do have a short bed pickup truck, that's going to kind of help push your trailer a little bit further back so it's going to be easier to make those tight turns. You won't have to worry about your trailer engaging as quickly with your cab. So you'll have a little bit more room there to make those turns. Our coupler socket is basic coupler socket. It's gonna touch to your standard 2 5/16 inch gooseball. It's got the pin style latch here. So take that off, get it connected onto your goose ball and put it back in. And that's going to make sure that it stays on the ball. This is a nice heavy duty steel construction, A very well built. Gen-Y has a great reputation for building very solid products and this is no exception. It also has a powder coat finish to help resist wear and corrosion. So it's going to last you a nice long time. Do a great job for you. This is made here in the USA, so you can trust to make to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. So if you are looking for a more comfortable ride for your gooseneck, this is going to be a great option for you. We do also have others very similar to this, just depends on your trailer weight and that sort of thing. So make sure you're getting the best one for you. That's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Review from a similar Spartan GN Coupler in Gooseneck Coupler

Holes in hitch don’t line up with the hole in tube on my 2018 MAXXD Trailer. With holes lined up the hitch is offset towards passenger side of truck. Was really looking forward to working this hitch. Very disappointed

There are situations where the existing outer tube of the gooseneck couple will not have the correct holes to line this adapter up with. It is okay to slide this inner tube into the outer tube aligned correctly and just tighten the set screws. You will not use the pin in this case.
