With the flip of a switch, you can activate the generator's economy mode feature. This mode adjusts engine speed to match the power demands of your connected devices. This generator comes with a number of safety features that protect both you and the generator itself. The control panel contains two warning lights indicating low oil and overloading. When the engine is low on oil, it will automatically shut down to prevent damage. If an overload is detected, either by exceeding the generator's limits or a power surge, the circuit breaker will stop supplying power to the connected devices. A built-in spark arrester helps prevent any sparking that might burn someone or start a fire, protecting both you and the environment. This arrester has been certified by the USDA Forest Service. Also, a digital voltage regulator assists in minimizing voltage fluctuations which helps to maintain a steady flow of electricity.


Choosing a Generator

To choose a generator that meets your needs, you must match the size of the generator (that is, the starting output and running output in watts) with the electrical demands of the equipment that you want to operate.


Power Demands

Starting (surge) wattage is the power a device requires at startup. Running (rated) wattage is the power needed to keep the device running. A large appliance with an electric motor such as a furnace, refrigerator, air conditioner, or washing machine may require 2 to 3 times more starting wattage than running wattage.


It is always best to start your generator with no load connected, then add each device one at a time. Additionally, a good practice to consider is connecting your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. As you connect and start devices, your available wattage decreases. This order of operation allows you to start devices with the highest power demands when there is more power available.

Determining Your Power Needs

When choosing a generator, knowing the amount of power you will need is crucial to your decision. Whether you are preparing for an emergency situation at home or taking a weekend trip in the RV, planning out your application is essential. The two calculations below provide power estimations that will help point you to a generator that is right for your needs.


Industry Standard Calculation

The Industry Standard Calculation is a quick and easy way to determine your required wattage. It may provide some padding in your wattage requirements, which could give you more power than you actually need, but you shouldn't have to worry about not having enough power. The following steps will help you quickly calculate the correct size generator to meet your application.


As stated earlier, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation requires this approach to work. However, using this calculation removes the worry of connecting devices in a certain order.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for the devices that you want to plug into the generator.

a. Find the starting (surge) watts and running (rated) watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator. Look for a sticker or plate on each device or check your owner's manuals.

b. If your device or manual only shows amps and volts, watts can also be determined through a simple formula. (Amps x Volts = Watts)

c. List all of your starting watts and running watts as seen in Table 1 below.

3. To find the total running watts, add all of the running watts together from Table 1.


1,200 + 800 + 450 + 100 = 2,550 total running watts


To run all of these devices simultaneously, you would require a generator with at least 3,150 starting watts and 2,550 running watts.


Advanced Precise Calculation

While the method for calculating your power needs outlined above will work, it isn't the most precise. If you aren't afraid of doing a little more math, you can use the Advanced Precise Calculation to get a more accurate idea of how much power you will need and potentially save yourself some money. Because the calculation above pads in enough power to ensure you can start your devices in any order, it may point you to a bigger and more expensive generator than you need. However, by following the more regimented, order-of-operations calculation below, you'll get a much more precise idea of how much power you need, which could in turn point you to a smaller and less expensive generator.


Again, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation also requires that you start your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. When you connect devices in this order, you can start high demand devices when there is more power available.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator.

3. In Table 3, shown below, the values from Table 2 are used to calculate the highest total starting watts required as devices are connected and running. This number represents the highest power requirement you will encounter as you connect all of your devices to the generator. To find this, add the starting watts of each new device you connect to the combined running watts of all connected devices. The highest of these numbers will be the total starting watts required. And again, remember to always connect devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts.

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at an etrailer 3200 watt portable inverter generator. This inverter generator provides a portable power source. Starting wattage is 3200. Running watts is 2900. This is great for camping, RV-ing, work sites, and really any applicable that calls for needing a portable power source. Now, if you need more power, you can actually operate this unit in parallel or pair it with other models.

If pairing with another unit, you will need to purchase a parallel kit. That is sold separately and available at etrailer.com.This model, one of the really neat features about it is that it does feature electric start, as well as manual start, and it comes with a remote. Little key fob here which allows you to start and stop the unit, so it's nice, it's easy to use, and that's definitely an upgrade of this model. Also laid back here on the table, you can see all the bonus stuff that it comes with. It includes the SAE 10W-30 engine oil.

Comes with the oil funnel. Comes with your wrench for your spark plug, and a screwdriver to remove your access panel, which is located on this side of the generator. Then it also comes with your battery charging cable, and it comes with the battery charger for the onboard battery. I'll go over those components a little more in-depth here in a moment.The unit is RV ready, with the 30 amp RV TT-30R receptacle. The handle on top, you can see we have a handle right here on each side, so if you need to lift it and move it around, you can easy do so.

Keep in mind that the dry weight on this unit is 90 pounds, so it does weigh quite a bit, but if it's on the ground and you need to transport it, you can see here that it has the never flat wheels. These are made from durable plastic and rubber. But what you can do is, you can take the handle, which is located right here. You can extend this out and pivot the unit up, so that way you can easily roll it around as well. Then when you're not using the handle, it does store out of the way completely, so that way, you don't even really know that it's there.It features padded feet, so the unit doesn't move around when running.

It also offers quiet operation with the whisper series muffler. Noise level is 59 decibels. It features a 171, that's 171 CC single cylinder air cooled four-stroke OHV engine, or overhead valve, for longer life, higher performance, and lower maintenance. It has a 1.8 gallon gas tank, and it uses clean power. Or excuse me, it uses clean and fresh regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum 87 octane.Now, keep in mind that with generators, the runtime will vary depending on how it's used. But this one does have up to a nine hour runtime at 25% load. The unit does offer clean power with less than 3% THD or total harmonic distortion. So, it's great for charging your electronic components like phones, tablets, and laptops and so on. Overall, it's a really nice unit. You can see here that for what you get, it's a nice compact design.Basically, what I want to do with the rest of the video is just go over the main components here. Now, a couple things I want to mention. The included material that it comes with is worth keeping. You do not want to discard this. It does come with a quick reference guide, big enough that way if you have this in a trailer or something, or in your garage, you can hang this up and always go back to it. But it goes over how to start it, hooking everything up, quick reference guide, poster sized paper right there.And then the manual that it comes with is a really nice, detailed manual as well. Then I want to point out these cables. This cable right here is basically a cable that plugs into the 12 volt DC 8.3 amp outlet, or excuse me. This one plugs into the battery and charging port. So, this one allows you to charge the onboard battery by plugging it in right here, and then connecting it to a standard AC outlet. The other cable is our battery charging cable, meaning this allows us to charge a separate 12 volt battery by plugging it into the 12 volt DC 8.3 amp port and then connecting it to the positive and negative terminal post of a 12 volt battery.Let's go over the rest of the control panel. I'm just going to work through the manual here and highlight the components over here. This right here, number one, the big red switch. This is your engine start switch, and then you have your economy control switch. Now, the economy control switch can be activated in order to minimize fuel consumption and noise level while operating the unit during times of reduced electrical output, allowing the engine speed to idle during periods of non-use, and then the engine speed will return to normal when an electrical load is connected. When the economy switch is off, the engine runs at normal speed, and then also with this unit, you have your three to one data minder. This is the multi-meter. You can push the select button to show the voltage, hertz, and running hours on the unit.Then over here, you have the 120 volt, 20 amp duplex plug. You have 20 amps of current that can be drawn from this 120 volt receptacle, and you got two of those ports. Also, all the ports have these nice dust caps that go over, which is going to keep out dirt and grime when nothing's connected. Right here, you have the 120 volt 30 amp RV port. Maximum full load is 30 amp current that can be drawn from this 120 volt receptacle, and then you also have right here, the battery restore switch. This simply restores the battery power to the control module.And then you also have the indicator light. I do want to point out that this has a lot of safety features built into it. You have the output ready indicator light. It remains on during normal operating conditions, and then shuts off when the generator's overloaded. You have the overload indicator LED light. This light turns on when the generator is overloaded and will cut power to the receptacles. And then you have your oil warning indicator light, which basically, if that's on, you need to check your oil level when the light turns on, because the engine will not run when the indicator is lit. So, when the oil falls below the minimum level, the oil warning indicator light comes on and the engine stops automatically, and the engine will not start until the proper amount of oil is in the crank case.Then you have the port right here. This is the DC 5 volt 2.1 amp USB outlet, so that allows you to plug in anything that uses a USB cable. Then you have two circuit breakers on the unit. So, you have your AC circuit protector and your DC circuit protector. The two ports that are similar right here, these are the parallel operation outlets. These outlets are used for connecting two etrailer inverter generators for parallel operation. Again, keep in mind that you do need the etrailer parallel kit if you want to pair with another generator.You also have the 12 volt DC outlet, which is right here. 8.3 amp of DC current may be drawn from this receptacle. Use this outlet to charge 12 volt automotive type batteries only, with the included cable. Then you also have the remote start program button, which is right below that. That's this red button right here. So, this button, you can use this along with the remote control to program the generator to be started remotely. And then below that, you have the remote start indicator light. You also have the ground terminal on the unit, and then you have your outlet covers.Over here, you have the fuel valve knob. You also have your choke button. And you have the recoil starter, and then you have the 12 volt DC battery charger port, which is right here. That's what I talked about earlier. You can plug the 120 volt AC charger into that port to charge the generator battery. Then over here, I pointed out the handles directly on top. Easily accessible. We have the fuel cap, so you can remove this. Again, 1.8 gallon. It does have the screen in there, so it's going to keep out any contaminants that try to get into the gasoline from above. That is an automotive style cap, so it clicks when it's tight, so that way, you don't have to worry about damaging that cap or over-tightening.This right here is our control panel. Behind here is how you'd gain access for your oil, and just the different components for connecting the onboard battery and so on. Over here, we have the muffler and spark arrester, and also behind here, this would allow you to have access to the air filter as well. Now, when it comes to the dimensions of the unit, we're looking at about 23 and one quarter inches long by 18 inches tall, by 17 and seven eights inches wide. The rated AC voltage is 120 volts. Rated frequency is 60 hertz. That's going to do it for today's look at the etrailer 3200 watt portable inverter generator.
