Video Transcript for Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Dodge Ram Pickup

Speaker 1: Today on our 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver. Offering the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, part number is 31374.Now here's what your hitch is going to look like installed on your Ram. As you can see, right here in the middle we've got our two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. You're going to have the flush reinforcement collar around the end of it there. You'll see this tucked in the outer edge of our bumper, so that's going to help prevent us from running into it if you're walking by or something like that. Also visible, you'll have your recovery loops, if you need to run, maybe if you get a wench mounted in the front you'd run a strap back to it, or just to get yourself pulled out. We'll have one of those located on each side, and that's really about all you're going to see from the hitch.

The rest of it, the cross tube and everything, that's going to be tucked up behind our fascia here. So not adding a whole cross bar or anything like that. Kind of a nice touch. Now these are often used for snow plow applications, kind of residential use. If you want to have a quick connection point there for a snow plow. A lot of guys are also going to use a front mount hitch like this for navigating a trailer in tight areas.

Maybe you want to get it on the side of your garage or something, and you don't quite have the turning radius you need. One of these can really give you a lot more maneuverability. And also on the off road segment, you'll see these go out to the wenches again, or spare tire carrier some guys like to put on there. So, lots of different options and uses for a front mount style hitch. Now all of those items you'll want to secure using the 5/8 diameter pin hole. You'll want to choose an accessory that's rated for the amount of weight that you decide to use, but you can use a standard pin and clip, anti-rattle device, or locking hitch pin.

Now our hitch is going to offer a 500 pound tongue weight rating. So that's when your accessory is in there, that's the maximum downward force that you'd want to put on that receiver tube opening. It also offers a 9,000 pound straight line pull, so if you're going to be doing any kind of recovery or anything like that, we've got good superior strength there, it should hold up and help you get the items out.Now to begin our installation, we're going to raise our hitch into position. We're going to use the weld nuts that exist on the plates here on the bottom of the truck. For the weld nut that you have, it's a good idea to use some spray lubricant and a tube brush to get this cleaned out.

There's going to be rust, probably dirt and debris in there. And you want to get that clean, so your bolt will thread in properly. These attachment points are going to be the same on each side. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we'll get our hitch lifted into position. We're going to place in our hex bolts, and you see we've got a conical tooth washer on there. The teeth of that washer need to face up towards the hitch. Once you have it started well, we can let it rest there for a minute until we tighten it down. Now we're going to use a 19 millimeter socket or a three-quarter inch socket. We're going to get those snug down. You do have the option to trim your fascia, but as you'll see as we tighten our bolts down, they'll have plenty of room to just flex up. You won't have to worry about cutting it.Now we want to torque both those bolts down to the specifications listed in our instructions. Now we'll use our hitch as a template, we're want to drill out our 17/32 hole. It's a good idea to use a center punch just to get a hole marked right there in the middle where you want it. We'll do that on both sides. Now I like to start with a little bit smaller drill bit, just to get a pilot hole going and work my way up. Once you've got your holes drilled out, it's a good idea to use a little spray paint just to cover that bare nut up. And we'll repeat that same process over on the driver's side. With our holes drilled out, we'll want to get our, we'll want to get our hardware fish wire into position. We're going to use the access hole located right up here on the frame, so let's put this put this in our hole here on the bottom, and we'll direct it back, so it will come out of that hole. Once that's out, we'll put our spacer block up and on. And we want to thread on our carriage bolt. We'll hold on to the other end, feed our spacer block in the frame, and our carriage bolt. We want to thread it down to the hole we created. Just like that. Once that's down through, we want to put on our flange nut. We'll head over to the other side and do the same thing. Now again, with the 19 or three-quarter, we're going to tighten these down. Now we can get these torqued down as well. That will complete our installation of the Curt Custom Fit Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 31374, on our 2009 Dodge Ram.

Great construction. Realtively easy to install, but I would prefer U-bolts to drilling in the frame and fishing bolts through! 429878

It needs to be a few inches higher, so it’s bearly flush belke the bumper. It grabs the oavement in low dios in the road. It’s mounted to a RAM CREW CAB 4WD

Easy to install and durable. I used this to hold a 80 qt. cooler in an aluminum surf fishing rack, full of ice and fish. It was rock solid. You do have to get used to it being there when pulling into a parking space with a concrete curb in front of you. Even then the curb usually loses. 357807

no problem with product as far as manufacturing and quality. have on a 4x4 Ram 1500. hangs too low, drags if u cross the smallest ditch etc. also mounts to far in and when you put carrier into hitch it butts up against bumper and will not go in far enough to put the pin thru. havent been able to use it, just havent had time to take it off.

This worked out pretty well- drove it for the first time since installed it and it definitely has an affect on how the vehicle feels (I guess the added weight to the front end ) I wouldn't say bad but different. The hitch went on easy, had to trim a very small bit of the air dam maybe a quarter inch. I was worried it would have a impact on the aesthetics of the truck but I think it looks pretty awesome - also the price was the best I could find on the net 443668

If I could mark it at 4.5 stars I would. I like it the hitch. I think it hangs down too low, only 8" off the pavement. I did not like to have to take off the tow hooks to install the hitch. I did like the idea of I sold the tow hooks for almost as much as I paid for the hitch. I had to buy a hitch extender. ( I do not see the extender I bought on etrailer listed any more.) The extender put the hitch out far enough to clear the grill guard that I had installed. My goal was to have a place to mount my 8,000 pound winch. I can now slide the winch in the front receiver or the back factory receiver. I can now pull the truck out from either front or back. 488385

Good North American made hitch. Clearance from tow hoops to ground a consideration. Bent one hoop back but only because the old logging road was that bad. 634075

Awesome took about 45 minutes, solid and works great, instructions hard to read , very small, but simple parts self explanatory 600589

Perfect fit and installs as stated in the instructions. Trimming the valance is very minor, however it does not have to be done. Frame steel is real so don't go cheap on a drill bits. 481360

Working out great. Used for surf fishing basket. Does reduce ground clearance a hard two inches.

Do you have a question about this Front Hitch?

  • Curt Hitch or Draw Tite Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Ram 1500
  • The install of the Curt Hitch # 31374 and the Draw Tite hitch part # 65062 on your 2015 Ram 1500 are going to be so similar that you really wouldn't gain much in terms of fascia trimming/modification if you went with one or the other. The Curt Hitch # 31374 is confirmed to fit your 2015 Ram 1500 4x4. It will require the removal of the factory tow hooks, but this hitch has loops on either side of the hitch opening that could be used as tow hooks which the Draw Tite does not so I would...

  • Can I Use a Cargo Carrier With the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver on my 2015 Ram 1500
  • The Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver # 31374, which is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Ram 1500 as long as it is a 4x4, has a Vertical Load Rating of 500 lbs. As long as that weight capacity is not exceeded then this front mount hitch will be a great solution for you to carry a generator on the front of your Ram. If you are wanting to use a cargo carrier to haul a variety of cargo, then I recommend going with the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153. This will fit in the 2 inch receiver...

  • Ground Clearance of Front Mounted Receiver Installed on 2009 Ram 1500 2WD
  • According to Curt, their # 31374 front mounted receiver isn't recommended for 2WD models because of their lower ride height. My Curt representative also told me that there might be differences in the front suspension members that would interfere with the hitch. The Draw-Tite # 65062 which is indeed very similar to the Curt model will sit so that the underside of the receiver tube will sit about 1-3/4 inches below the bottom of the bottom of the bumper fascia. In Draw-Tite's opinion,...

I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. You may need to retain tow hooks on the front of your truck, so if that is important to you the Curt front hitch part # 31374 would be the better option as it has tow hook loops built into the hitch. If the tow hooks aren't an issue for you the Draw Tite would be my recommendation...

  • Do the Front Tow Hooks have to be Removed For Front Trailer Hitch Installation, 2009 Dodge Ram 1500
  • To install the CURT Front Mount Receiver, # 31374, the tow hooks will need to be permanently removed. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. Removal of the tow hooks is the first step. Since the hooks will be removed, the bushings you see will also need to be removed so the hitch can be properly installed.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch for 2018 Ram 1500 Require Trimming Fascia
  • All of the front hitches we offer for your 2018 Ram 1500 like the Draw Tite part # 65062 do require trimming of the front fascia. The trimming allows the hitch to sit a little bit higher so that you get slightly better ground clearance. Front hitches typically aren't classified but this hitch is a 2 inch size like a Class III normally is and has higher capacities too at 9,000 lb line pull and 500 lb vertical load.
