Video Transcript for Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe - Curt

Today on our 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe we'll be installing the CURT 2" front-mounted hitch, part number 31302. Now with our hitch already installed you can see it's nicely concealed behind the front fascia. The only thing sticking out is the receiver tube. It's got a 5/8 pinhole and a 2" by 2" receiver tube. This is a class three hitch. It has 500 pounds of tongue weight capacity and 5,000 pounds of tow capacity with a 9,000 line capacity.

The sleek design keeps most of it behind the fascia with just a little bit that's visible through the tow hook cutout in the fascia. It is also designed to work in conjunction with vehicles previously equipped tow hooks. Next I'll go ahead and give a couple measurements that will assist you with selecting for your new hitch. from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the front bumper is 6-1/4". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 10-3/4". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a snowplow, winch, or cargo basket.

Now we'll go ahead and show you how to install the new hitch. Now to begin our install we'll go ahead and note that the vehicle is already previously equipped with factory front-mounted tow hooks. With that, we'll need to remove the manufacturer's bolt at the bottom of the frame. Now with the bolt out it's easy to see the forward and rear attachment points. We'll be using the hole cut out here in the frame as our rear attachment point on each side and for that attachment point we're going to install a 1/2" carriage bolt and block. The carriage bolt and block will go in the frame, then down through the hitch, where it will get secured with a 1/2" flange nut.

To get our hardware into the frame we're going to use the 1/2" bolt leader supplied with the install kit. To get our hardware into the frame we're going to use a reverse pull method. Start by sliding on our block, then threading on the carriage bolt. Feed the bolt into the frame first, followed by the block. We'll pull them both back down over the manufacturer's hole to create our attachment point. Next we can put our side bracket in place.

To do that we're going to reuse the manufacturer's bolt for our forward attachment point. Slide it over the bolt we just installed, then reinstall the manufacturer's bolt into the weld nut built into the frame with the tow hook, noting on applications that do not have a tow hook you will install another carriage bolt and block to create the forward attachment point hardware. Now with my bolt in place we'll go ahead and take the flange nut and thread it onto our carriage bolt. Now we're going to install our hardware loosely until we have it all in place. Now with our passenger side done I'm going to move over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Now with both side brackets in position but loosely installed, we're ready to put the hitch cross tube into place. We're going to secure it with the new 1/2" bolt that will go through the hitch, then through the side bracket, and get secured with a 1/2" flange nut. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install these fasteners. Now with all our fasteners installed we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Once I have the brackets tightened down to the frame we'll then go ahead and tighten down the hardware that secures the cross tube to the brackets. Now once we have them all tightened down we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. That will complete our install of the CURT front-mounted hitch, part number 31302, on our 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe. .

The shipping was quick. Installed easily. The hitch is visible just below the fascia at the bottom of the bumper. I had a front hitch on my previous truck (Tacoma); also from etrailer. I use the front hitch to move my travel trailer into tight spaces. Originally, with this recent purchase, I had purchased the incorrect item. All it took was an email from the staff at etrailer. The email contained product return instructions along with an RGA#. I just returned yesterday. This extra customer service made the return process quite simple. With all my needs regarding hitches, etc. I will always check etrailer first. 152029

Installation extremely easy, line up holes and bolt together, that simple. No trimming required. Purchase front hitch to park 29 FT. camper at a cramped storage facility. Dropping the camper off now is as easy as picking up the camper. All parts well packed. Website easy to use, prices are right and easy to track shipment. Would purchase from website again. 51121

my truck is a 2002,what i figured out was, don't remove the skirt or tow hook. remove bottom bolt in tow hook [save]. attach fish wire to carrage bolt and insert it into other hole to be used. slide square hole spacer up wire in to hole.pull carrage bolt [attached to wire] through spacer & frame. YOU GOT IT. hang bracket on carrage bolt & use tow hook bolt back where it was.[it's long enough]. hold carrage bolt with grips of your likening or put 2 nuts jammed together to hold bolt while tightening. I hope it work's as easy as it sounds for you. 237694

I have to say since I have been purchasing products from etrailer it has been seamless, every transaction goes off with out a hitch ( no pun) all the staff is very much customer oriented, your service is excellent, I made a couple of errors in measurement as I was installing a front hitch on my Tahoe to push and pull my boat around in my oddly shaped driveway, I made a phone call and I was sent the correct items ( with etrailers help and assistance) and a return label was emailed to me so I could return the items I ordered incorrectly. I highly recommend this company, thanks for your great customer service! 251681

I was not able to use my boat when the yard was full of snow and mud due to challenging driveway with hill and curves. I needed a front trailer hitch to push it up the driveway and swing into the garage. I called the local trailer hitch shop and was told that it would be $340 and about a week until I could get it installed. I took that as a challenge to see if I could do better. I found this hitch for $185, got it in two days and installed it myself in 90 minutes (with hardly a bad word spoken and no drilling required). Used it today for the first time and was able to park the boat without a problem. My only concern it that the install instructions are a bit vague regarding models with front tow hooks. I was able to figure it out and it works fine. 120099

I gave this hits only 4 stars since all of the available information indicated it would bolt right on to my 2003 Avalanche 1500 (All Models) with no modification, but it wasn't quite that simple. First off, my Avalanche has the plastic cladding. The end brackets of the hitch push the bottom of the air dam under the bumper down a bit and make it bow out. I had to remove the bracket that secured the air dam to the center of the frame. I mounted the hitch in the upper position since I didn't want it to be so low, and the receiver ends up being 8" back from the bumper facia. I had to order an 8" extension to bring it out past the bumper. Other than that, I'm happy with the hitch. I just wish the fitment guide was a little more specific. 75440

Did the hitch still come out under the cladding? Or do u need to make a hole for extension? Thanks Bryan 2004 avalanche with clading

Since I installed the hitch in the upper position, I had to cut a hole through the claddingbumper. This came out near the bottom of the license plate recess. I then use the 8 extension if needed. This brings the receiver out in front of the bumper.

This hitch was very easy to install....I had to trim the lower air dam to fit around the receiver and that gives it a clean neat look. I didn't like that I had to remove and leave the shields around the tow hooks off. But overall I'm very pleased. I plan to use this hitch for maneuvering a camper in a narrow spot beside my home, and for a bike rack when towing a camper. 285153

The Curt front hitch is GREAT!I use it to help move my camper beside my house which is lacking clearance to back in. I will certainly install one on my next truck.

I can’t address the installation as the box arrived torn and some of the nuts and bolts were rattling in the box. Now I have to wait for the missing hardware. The hitch itself looks to be high quality and you would think that quality packaging would be a priority. All it would take is a heavy plastic bag wrapped in cardboard to protect the bag of hardware from ripping open in transit. 448169

I received my hitch at 12:30pm and had it on by 1pm bolted rt on no hassle did trim my valence just so it wasn't pushing up on it but you can't even tell it is a great product, extremely durable, heavy built, and very easy installation 654796

Installation was quick and painless. Front mounted hitch makes a world of difference when maneuvering in tight places (I wish I had installed it sooner...). I had a choice of mounting the hitch high or low on the front of my 2000 Silverado 1500 4x4. Initially I chose low because nothing else would have to be modified. But then I noticed that in the low position, it sits lower than the skid plates, and I didn't like that. I changed the mounting to the high position which necessitated cutting a square hole in the front valance so the draw bar with the hitch ball could be inserted. This was very easy though. As it turned out, the high position was much better for my particular trailer anyway. 641411

I bought the Curt hitch for the front of my 2002 GMC after searching the Internet for several days. The reason I selected this hitch was because e-trailer had provided a video of an installation of the unit that was I selected for my truck. When I received the hitch it was in great condition and the installation was simple. I was expecting some kind of problem or difficulty during installation, but it was easily completed and looks great. I would strongly recommend the Curt products. 572389

This hitch is just what my husband needed! He loves it! It has made putting our boat in the garage so much easier. We have less than 3" on each side to get it through the garage door, so by having the hitch on the front he is able to put it right where we need it! Makes it a stress free process. He also is able to move the trailer beside the garage when the boat is in the water for the summer. My brother-in-law was amazed how much easier it was! Customer service is excellent! First I ordered the wrong one & they exchanged it for the proper one. Plus, followed up with us after a year to see how it was working out for us! Thanks George @ etrailer! 493917

My son and I installed this on a chilly, but clear day in our driveway. We spent approximately an hour on the install. Fit exactly right. Only problem was that my truck did not have an access hole to run the fishline through. But we figured out to attach the bolt to the fishline push it through the hole in the frame where it was to reside then put the fishline through the plate, then push the plate up into the hole then pull on the fishline to bring the bolt through the plate. One side went on easy, the other just took a few minutes to get the bolt in just the right place in the frame to pull it through the plate. We then tightened all the bolts once we had them all started loosely. Nice and tight. We will be using it for a bike rack and for maneuvering trailers. 465405

Exceedingly simple to install. Looks quite beefy. Will have to trim front underbumper plastic fascia less than 1" x 3" for the receiver to be able to poke under/through before I reinstall it. The hardest part was removing the fascia, popping 10 - 15 plastic fasteners off. Not even sure that would have been required; maybe I could have trimmed it in place. Front hitch makes it orders of magnitude easier to maneuver trailers than a back hitch; this is my second. After the first one, I realized I should have done it years before. Not only does it make steering the trailer into a tight spot way easier, it saves the neck pain from doing it in reverse while looking over my shoulder. 429607

Ask the Experts about this Curt Front Hitch
Do you have a question about this Front Hitch?

  • Where Does Front Mount Trailer Hitch 65023 Install on a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500LD
  • The Draw-Tite front mount trailer hitch # 65023 has 4 mounting locations. The 2 forward most mounting locations will use the tow hook mounting location (on vehicles equipped with tow hooks). I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. Provided you are within the capacities of the hitch at 500 pounds vertical load and 9,000 pounds line pull you should not have any frame failure like on your older truck. Honestly this is the first time I have heard of that...

  • Comparing Curt and Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitches for a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • It all depends on your 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 is a light duty or a heavy duty. If it is a light duty then I give the edge to Curt, # 31302, because their powder coating holds up well and the hitch is made in the USA. If you have a 1500HD then Draw-Tite hitch # 65028 is more popular but again I would give the edge to Curt # 31108 for the same reasons described above. I have linked videos showing example installations of both hitches for you. In either case both the Curt and Draw-Tite...

  • The Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch, # 31302, can be installed on your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD in two ways. It can be installed with the hitch receiver through the bumper which would require a 3 inch square hole to be cut into the plastic fascia, or it can be installed under the bumper which requires no trimming. • Determining if Curt Front Mount Receiver 31302 Will Interfere With License Plate When Upside Down
  • If you were to install the Curt # 31302 Front Mount Hitch so that it is the "through bumper" instead of "under bumper" configuration you will need to cut out a 3 inch square hole that is located 3-1/2 inches below the top edge of the plastic fascia. If you go out and measure 3-1/2 inches below the top edge of the plastic fascia on your 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche you will be able to determine whether that installation method will interfere with your license plate or not. Front mount hitches...

  • Looking for a Front Hitch to fit 2000 Chevy Silverado
  • I do have a front mounted hitch that will fit your 2000 Chevy Silverado, though the Draw-Tite Front Mount Receiver, # 65028, is not a fit for your truck. What you would need is the Curt Front Mount Receiver, # 31302, which is confirmed to work with your vehicle. The Draw-Tite Universal Spare Tire Carrier, # 6715, would be a great choice, fitting into the two-inch receiver that the Curt offers. I have attached links to video reviews of each product for you to take a look at.

  • Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • All of the front mount hitches we have for the 2006 Chevy Silverado, see link, will have just the receiver visible below the front fascia. None of them have the receiver behind the front license plate area. This is because the hitches attach to the frame so in order to mount a hitch so that the receiver exits behind the license plate the hitch would have to be mounted on top of the frame rails. There isn't room for a hitch in that location so instead manufacturers made the hitches to attach...

  • What Front Hitch Can Be Installed Through The Front Fascia On A 2001 Chevy Suburban
  • For your 2001 Chevy Suburban the 4WD or the 2WD will not matter for the front hitch. The choice for your vehicle will be if it is the 1500 series or the 2500 series Suburban. If you have the 2001 Chevy Suburban 1500, the Draw-Tite Front Hitch, # 65023, will fit and the Curt Front Hitch, # 31302 will fit. Since you said your fascia has a square hole cut into the middle of it you might need the Curt Hitch, # 31302. The installation instructions on the Curt hitch says that it can be installed...

  • Installation Instructions for Front Mount Trailer Hitches for a 2004 GMC Yukon
  • If you are talking about Curt hitch # 31302, the instructions do not mention drilling at all. And the first step says that models with tow hooks must remove the factory bolt from the underside of the frame at the forward attachment point. I have linked the instructions to the right for reference. I think you might be talking about hitch # 65023. Again the tow hooks are mentioned right away. If the vehicle has tow hooks you will remove the M12 bolts from the frame. Then you will place...

  • Front Mount Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD 4x4
  • When it comes to a front mount trailer hitch receiver for your 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Light Duty Series 4x4, there are two options. The Curt # 31302 and the Draw-Tite # 65023. Since they both offer the same weight capacities and basically install in the same way I would choose the one that is most economical which would be the Curt # 31302. I have attached the installation instructions for you.

  • Determining Location of Hole in Fascia to Install Curt Front Mounted Receiver Part # 31302
  • For a through-fascia installation, the instructions state that the top of the 3 inch square hole would fall 3-1/2 inches below the top edge of the plastic fascia. Before cutting, I would strongly recommend you confirm these measurements for yourself. Install the frame brackets, then slip the hitch cross member behind the fascia. Because the fascia will be in the way, you will not be able to slide the cross member all the way forward, but if you can hold the cross member at the correct...

  • Recommended Front Hitch For A 2004 GMC Yukon Denali XL And Hitch Mounted 4 Bike Carrier
  • For your 2004 GMC Yukon Denali XL, I recommend the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver 2", # 31302 for a 1500 series. This is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and installation will not require any drilling, but will require trimming of the front air dam and/or fascia. For a 2500 series, I recommend the # 31108 which will also include trimming the air dam and/or fascia. This hitch will use the OEM Tow hook fastener bolts to install the hitch and due to variations in the tow hook fasteners...

  • Recommendations for Carrying 5 Bikes on a 2006 Z71 Chevy Suburban 1500 Pulling a Travel Trailer
  • Yes, the Swagman XTC4 # S64665 bike rack that you reference will fit a 2 inch receiver on a front mount hitch on your 2006 Chevy Suburban. If you do not have one yet, I recommend the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch # 31302. Before you put such a large rack on the front of your vehicle, there are a couple of points to take into consideration. The first consideration is when carrying bikes on the front of a vehicle they will cover your head lights and probably obstruct your line of sight,...

How much trimming and if trimming is even needed varies from model to model and you will only know once you have the hitch. I have included a link to the installation details for reference.
