Video Transcript for Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe - Curt

Today on our 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe we'll be installing the CURT 2" front-mounted hitch, part number 31302. Now with our hitch already installed you can see it's nicely concealed behind the front fascia. The only thing sticking out is the receiver tube. It's got a 5/8 pinhole and a 2" by 2" receiver tube. This is a class three hitch. It has 500 pounds of tongue weight capacity and 5,000 pounds of tow capacity with a 9,000 line capacity.

The sleek design keeps most of it behind the fascia with just a little bit that's visible through the tow hook cutout in the fascia. It is also designed to work in conjunction with vehicles previously equipped tow hooks. Next I'll go ahead and give a couple measurements that will assist you with selecting for your new hitch. from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the front bumper is 6-1/4". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 10-3/4". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a snowplow, winch, or cargo basket.

Now we'll go ahead and show you how to install the new hitch. Now to begin our install we'll go ahead and note that the vehicle is already previously equipped with factory front-mounted tow hooks. With that, we'll need to remove the manufacturer's bolt at the bottom of the frame. Now with the bolt out it's easy to see the forward and rear attachment points. We'll be using the hole cut out here in the frame as our rear attachment point on each side and for that attachment point we're going to install a 1/2" carriage bolt and block. The carriage bolt and block will go in the frame, then down through the hitch, where it will get secured with a 1/2" flange nut.

To get our hardware into the frame we're going to use the 1/2" bolt leader supplied with the install kit. To get our hardware into the frame we're going to use a reverse pull method. Start by sliding on our block, then threading on the carriage bolt. Feed the bolt into the frame first, followed by the block. We'll pull them both back down over the manufacturer's hole to create our attachment point. Next we can put our side bracket in place.

To do that we're going to reuse the manufacturer's bolt for our forward attachment point. Slide it over the bolt we just installed, then reinstall the manufacturer's bolt into the weld nut built into the frame with the tow hook, noting on applications that do not have a tow hook you will install another carriage bolt and block to create the forward attachment point hardware. Now with my bolt in place we'll go ahead and take the flange nut and thread it onto our carriage bolt. Now we're going to install our hardware loosely until we have it all in place. Now with our passenger side done I'm going to move over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Now with both side brackets in position but loosely installed, we're ready to put the hitch cross tube into place. We're going to secure it with the new 1/2" bolt that will go through the hitch, then through the side bracket, and get secured with a 1/2" flange nut. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install these fasteners. Now with all our fasteners installed we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Once I have the brackets tightened down to the frame we'll then go ahead and tighten down the hardware that secures the cross tube to the brackets. Now once we have them all tightened down we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. That will complete our install of the CURT front-mounted hitch, part number 31302, on our 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe. .

I gave this hits only 4 stars since all of the available information indicated it would bolt right on to my 2003 Avalanche 1500 (All Models) with no modification, but it wasn't quite that simple. First off, my Avalanche has the plastic cladding. The end brackets of the hitch push the bottom of the air dam under the bumper down a bit and make it bow out. I had to remove the bracket that secured the air dam to the center of the frame. I mounted the hitch in the upper position since I didn't want it to be so low, and the receiver ends up being 8" back from the bumper facia. I had to order an 8" extension to bring it out past the bumper. Other than that, I'm happy with the hitch. I just wish the fitment guide was a little more specific. 75440

Did the hitch still come out under the cladding? Or do u need to make a hole for extension? Thanks Bryan 2004 avalanche with clading

-- comment by: Bryan c - 08/13/2013

Since I installed the hitch in the upper position, I had to cut a hole through the claddingbumper. This came out near the bottom of the license plate recess. I then use the 8 extension if needed. This brings the receiver out in front of the bumper.

I am a contrarian and a pessimist. Murphy's Law was written for me. My first order with eTrailer 2 mos ago was perfect. Not a single problem. Everything shipped on time (expedited even) and the order was complete. So, I thought I'd give eTrailer a chance to make up for it and ordered this hitch for my 2000 Sierra. Was it the correct fit ? No drilling ? I know, I'll use the "ask the expert", that way when things do go wrong it won't be my fault. "Buy this one", he said. "No drilling". "Trust me". OK, I placed the order. Uh Oh. Expedited again; the order arrived in 2 days. Well darn. It fits. Perfectly. No drilling. Easy install. 60 mins. I decided to mount it so it would fit through the facia. Darn, even that worked out with minimal difficulty. Now all I have to do is torque all the bolts to 75 lb-ft. Wait. They didn't tell me I needed a torque wrench. See. See. There's always something they don't tell you. I wonder if they sell torque wrenches at eTrailer? Maybe I'll give them one more chance. 52100

This hitch was very easy to install....I had to trim the lower air dam to fit around the receiver and that gives it a clean neat look. I didn't like that I had to remove and leave the shields around the tow hooks off. But overall I'm very pleased. I plan to use this hitch for maneuvering a camper in a narrow spot beside my home, and for a bike rack when towing a camper. 285153

Purchased this front hitch for 2006 GMC Sierra it fit perfectly . Main use is for home plowing of long driveway with H2 Rampage plow . Bought double bike rack as a after thought because getting to old to be picking up mountain bikes in an out of the back bed . Bike rack worked great and E-trailer was very helpful with my order. 228267

Just fine , thank you for asking .

The shipping was quick. Installed easily. The hitch is visible just below the fascia at the bottom of the bumper. I had a front hitch on my previous truck (Tacoma); also from etrailer. I use the front hitch to move my travel trailer into tight spaces. Originally, with this recent purchase, I had purchased the incorrect item. All it took was an email from the staff at etrailer. The email contained product return instructions along with an RGA#. I just returned yesterday. This extra customer service made the return process quite simple. With all my needs regarding hitches, etc. I will always check etrailer first. 152029

I was not able to use my boat when the yard was full of snow and mud due to challenging driveway with hill and curves. I needed a front trailer hitch to push it up the driveway and swing into the garage. I called the local trailer hitch shop and was told that it would be $340 and about a week until I could get it installed. I took that as a challenge to see if I could do better. I found this hitch for $185, got it in two days and installed it myself in 90 minutes (with hardly a bad word spoken and no drilling required). Used it today for the first time and was able to park the boat without a problem. My only concern it that the install instructions are a bit vague regarding models with front tow hooks. I was able to figure it out and it works fine. 120099

Were you able to keep the hooks on.

Excellent product and superior customer service. Instructions indicated it would take a professional an hour to install and a normal guy (me?) 2 hours.....well, I had it installed in an hour and five minutes and only busted one knuckle! Simple install, excellent fit, great shopping experience. Not much of a photographer...but here are a couple pics Alun J Kenmore WA 280829

Installation extremely easy, line up holes and bolt together, that simple. No trimming required. Purchase front hitch to park 29 FT. camper at a cramped storage facility. Dropping the camper off now is as easy as picking up the camper. All parts well packed. Website easy to use, prices are right and easy to track shipment. Would purchase from website again. 51121

Went together just like it was supposed to, but does hang a bit low. So I will be turning it over to gain a couple more inches. Other than that it works great. 79831

I have to say since I have been purchasing products from etrailer it has been seamless, every transaction goes off with out a hitch ( no pun) all the staff is very much customer oriented, your service is excellent, I made a couple of errors in measurement as I was installing a front hitch on my Tahoe to push and pull my boat around in my oddly shaped driveway, I made a phone call and I was sent the correct items ( with etrailers help and assistance) and a return label was emailed to me so I could return the items I ordered incorrectly. I highly recommend this company, thanks for your great customer service! 251681

Initially I ordered the wrong part, my bad. I then called you and I was pleasantly surprised to be treated with professionalism. It was arranged to return the wrong hitch with an emailed mailing label sent to me. I received the correct hitch in record time. Installed the hitch (without any hitches) pun intended. Good directions. I will recommend that the first line of the instructions should be either in color or larger and/or italics to emphasize the 2 options of the install. Under or through the fascia. Thank you, I will recommend you to my friends 161414

I ordered the front mount hitch for my Silverado so I can move trailers around easily. I was upgraded to express shipping. I received my hitch quickly and in good order. It was easy to install. All I had to do was loosen the tow hooks, use the fish tool that was included to install the rear bolt and then re-install the tow hooks and tighten everything up. Took about an hour (only because I was taking my time). Good product good price good service. eTrailers was great about communicating the staus of my order at all times. 24650

I purchased this product to aid me into backing my new camper into my fenced backyard. I am one of the world's worst at backing camp and boat trailers. At the recommendation of a friend who once worked at a trail center he said the the front mounted trailer hitches were the easiest to help maneuver trailers into in tight places. The installation was simple and only took less than an hour. Mostly due to the fact I have tools and equipment that are available to me to aid in this type work. The shipping time was great. 117330

Company ships promptly, quality hitch product and when determined whether one needs the HD or LD they fit. Even with etrailer.com's help, I got the wrong hitch, after checking measurements with tech dept. we determined I needed the LD. etrailer.com picked up the return freight on the wrong hitch. I would recommend doing the measurements with etrailer.com's tech dept. before ordering. I had it installed in about an hour. I would recommend etrailer.com to family & friends. 281702

Was worried at first if this would fit. Finding the correct parts for the classic body style for 2007 silverafos and not the newer style isnt easy. Most companies dont even know there were 2 different trucks for 2007 1500s. Regardless, this fit perfect. No issues what so ever regarding fitment, hardware, quality or finish. Tucked up under the truck nicely and does not affect anything around it. Even with the tow hooks installed. 319437

Great hitch for the front. It is very well constructed and bolts into existing holes in the frame. I put this on my 2002 Chevy Tahoe to carry our bicycles when pulling a trailer for camping. Fits nicely under front bumper, hardly noticeable. Very easy in install, I sit it on a couple of jack stands to hold it until I got it bolted in. I have had it a year now with many trips across the U.S. and very happy with the product. 316306

I can't say enough good things about your front mount hitch I bought from your company. I installed it in about 40 minutes! I was working alone and my Yukon was sitting in my driveway (no lift or jack stands). Following the directions provided with the hitch made installation a breaze! I will recommend your company to my friends and will make purchases myself in the future. 238952

Great product. Fast service and delivery. It didn't come with instructions though. 357659

  • Front Mount Trailer Hitch for a 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic 2500
  • The 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic 2500 requires a different front mount trailer hitch. From Curt, you can use # 31108. I spoke with my contact at Curt and from the bottom of the frame rail to the bottom of the receiver on the hitch once installed is 5 inches. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. I have included a some pictures showing the hitch installed.

  • Looking for a Front Hitch to fit 2000 Chevy Silverado
  • I do have a front mounted hitch that will fit your 2000 Chevy Silverado, though the Draw-Tite Front Mount Receiver, # 65028, is not a fit for your truck. What you would need is the Curt Front Mount Receiver, # 31302, which is confirmed to work with your vehicle. The Draw-Tite Universal Spare Tire Carrier, # 6715, would be a great choice, fitting into the two-inch receiver that the Curt offers. I have attached links to video reviews of each product for you to take a look at.

  • What Front Hitch Can Be Installed Through The Front Fascia On A 2001 Chevy Suburban
  • For your 2001 Chevy Suburban the 4WD or the 2WD will not matter for the front hitch. The choice for your vehicle will be if it is the 1500 series or the 2500 series Suburban. If you have the 2001 Chevy Suburban 1500, the Draw-Tite Front Hitch, # 65023, will fit and the Curt Front Hitch, # 31302 will fit. Since you said your fascia has a square hole cut into the middle of it you might need the Curt Hitch, # 31302. The installation instructions on the Curt hitch says that it can be installed...

  • Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 1999 Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4
  • Curt front mount trailer hitch # 31302 is designed for the 1500 series and not the 2500 series. For your 1999 Chevy Silverado 2500 you would need # 65028. You may or may not have to drill. There will be at least a 1/2 inch hole that will be used to install the hitch. If your truck has a 1/2 inch hole it will need to be enlarged to a 9/16 inch hole. You will not have to drill any new holes. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If your 1999 Chevy is actually...

  • What Modifications are Required to Install a Front Mount Trailer Hitch on 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • The Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch, # 31302, can be installed on your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD in two ways. It can be installed with the hitch receiver through the bumper which would require a 3 inch square hole to be cut into the plastic fascia, or it can be installed under the bumper which requires no trimming. The receiver opening will protrude far enough out so insert/remove the hitch pin without having to go beneath the truck. The instructions do not mention relocating the front...

  • Comparing Curt and Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitches for a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • It all depends on your 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 is a light duty or a heavy duty. If it is a light duty then I give the edge to Curt, # 31302, because their powder coating holds up well and the hitch is made in the USA. If you have a 1500HD then Draw-Tite hitch # 65028 is more popular but again I would give the edge to Curt # 31108 for the same reasons described above. I have linked videos showing example installations of both hitches for you. In either case both the Curt and Draw-Tite...

  • What Modifications are Required to Install a Front Mount Trailer Hitch On My 2004 GMC Yukon 1500
  • To install the Curt Front Mount Hitch on a 2004 GMC Yukon 1500, you may need to trim the front air dam or fascia for the hitch to install properly. How much trimming and if trimming is even needed varies from model to model and you will only know once you have the hitch. I have included a link to the installation details for reference. The other option would be the Draw-Tite Front Mount Hitch, # 65023. There are no notes regarding trimming or other modifications with the installation...

According to the instructions, if you install the hitch in the through bumper configuration you will need to cut a 3 inch square hole in the plastic fascia to allow the receiver to be correctly installed. 3 inches takes into account the hitch opening, 2 inches, the steel dimensions, 2-1/2 inches square and the reinforcement flange that is mounted around the...

It has a line pull capacity of 9000 lbs, a vertical load of 500 lbs, and a gross trailer weight of 5000 lbs. The hitch features a 2-inch receiver opening with a pin hole diameter of 5/8 inches and does not need welding for installation. • What Front Mount Hitch Should I use for My 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab Z71
  • LD stands for light duty. If your truck is badged as a 1500HD, you would use Curt part # 31108 instead. If your truck is not badged with HD, then you would use the 31302 for your front mount. If you have the Vortec 4800 or Vortec 5300 V8, you definitely have an LD. The 1500HD trucks got the Vortec 6000 V8.

  • Yes, the Swagman XTC4 # S64665 bike rack that you reference will fit a 2 inch receiver on a front mount hitch on your 2006 Chevy Suburban. If you do not have one yet, I recommend the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch # 31302. The first consideration is when carrying bikes on the front of a vehicle they will cover your head lights and probably obstruct your line of sight,...

  • Determining Location of Hole in Fascia to Install Curt Front Mounted Receiver Part # 31302

Before cutting, I would strongly recommend you confirm these measurements for yourself. Install the frame brackets, then slip the hitch cross member behind the fascia. Because the fascia will be in the way, you will not be able to slide the cross member all the way forward, but if you can hold the cross member at the correct...

  • Can the Curt Front Mount Hitch Support a Winch on a 1999 GMC Sierra Z71
  • Yes, the Curt Front Mount Hitch, # 31302, will be strong enough to mount and use a receiver mount winch. This hitch has a 500 lb vertical load capacity and a 9,000 lb line pull capacity. This hitch has a standard 2 inch receiver that is compatible with most hitch mounted winch plates. It is important to check the axle capacity of your front axle as well to ensure you do not exceed the capacity of the front axle. If you do not already have a winch plate, I recommend looking at the Curt...

If you have a light duty 1500 you would want the # 31302, if you have an HD 1500 you would want the # 31108 hitch. • All of the front mount hitches we have for the 2006 Chevy Silverado, see link, will have just the receiver visible below the front fascia. None of them have the receiver behind the front license plate area. This is because the hitches attach to the frame so in order to mount a hitch so that the receiver exits behind the license plate the hitch would have to be mounted on top of the frame rails. There isn't room for a hitch in that location so instead manufacturers made the hitches to attach...

This is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and installation will not require any drilling, but will require trimming of the front air dam and/or fascia. You will want to hand tighten the nut before using a wrench to secure it down. If you watch the attached video at 2:21 minute mark you can see the...
