Boaters will love it for its corrosion-resistant components and accessories. The included cargo rack is great for carrying purchases made while touring seaside communities, and the front and rear fenders help prevent water and mud from splashing up. Its compact size and light weight makes it easy to carry on and off your boat. And, unlike a regular bike, you can place this bike in a storage compartment on your boat so it's out of sight and out of the way.

Quick and Easy Folding Design

Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike Being Folded

The Mariner D8 takes less than 60 seconds to fold up. You can do it in 4 easy steps. Open the safety latch on the seat post and lower the saddle with it angled slightly to the right so it won't interfere with the top tube when you're folding the bike up. Fold the pedals in. Open the safety latch on the handlebar post and fold the handlebars down. Then open the safety latch on the frame and fold the bike together. There are magnets on each wheel that help hold the bike together in the folded position.

The bike weighs just 30 lbs so it's easy to carry wherever you go. It's easy to haul up and down stairs or load in and out of your trunk or truck bed. And if you have the carry bag (sold separately) you can haul it on your back like a standard backpack.

Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike

  1. Shimano Altus 8-Speed Rear Derailleur -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Derailleur
The Shimano Altus 8-speed rear derailleur has a light-action design and Teflon-coated bushings that make the gears smooth and easy to shift. It has a large 13t pulley on the top and a 15t pulley on the bottom. These pulleys take up more chainslack than standard derailleurs with 11t pulleys, so the cage isn't as long and doesn't hang as far off your bike. The resin plate body and lightweight aluminum bracket are designed for leisure cycling and touring.

  2. Schwalbe Citizen Tires -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Tires
20" Schwalbe Citizen touring tires grip the road better than standard bike tires. The tires have puncture-resistant K-Guard construction with a layer of rubber that is reinforced with Kevlar fibers. This helps relieve some of the concerns about getting a flat tire when you need to be getting back to your boat. The wheels have double-walled rims that provide increased support when compared with single-walled rims so they're better suited for off-road riding. The tubes have Schrader valves with cores that are easy to remove. For quick tire inflation you can use a Dahon combination seat post and tire pump (sold separately). It replaces the existing seat post and eliminates the need to carry an extra hand pump.

  3. Front and Rear Fenders -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Fender
The Mariner D8 is equipped with fenders over the front and rear tires. They help prevent water, mud, and road grime from splashing up and soiling your clothes or splashing onto the clothes of your fellow riders. They also help reduce the amount of grit that can get into your bike's moving components. The fenders are constructed of lightweight yet durable plastic that won't break when hit with rocks or other road debris.

  4. Steel Cargo Rack -
    Dahon Mariner D8 HInges
There is a sturdy steel cargo rack over the rear wheel that lets you carry your gear. This eases your burden so you don't have to carry your gear on your back in a clumsy backpack. There is an elastic safety strap included to secure your gear to the rack. You can also attach a pannier bag (sold separately) to carry additional gear.

  5. Adjustable Saddle -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Saddle
The cushioned, ergonomic saddle is comfortable to ride on even for long periods of time. It's also easy to adjust to accommodate your height, and you can do it in seconds. Just loosen the quick-clamp, slide the seat post to your desired height, and close the quick-clamp.

  6. Stainless Steel Hinges with Quick-Release Latch -
    Dahon Mariner D8 HInges
The hinges on the frame and handlebar post have stainless steel pins with brass bushings that allow them to move smoothly and to resist wear and rust. A quick-release, ViseGrip latch on each hinge keeps the frame locked tight and ensures the bike won't collapse while you are riding. For extra security there is a DoubleLok knob that pivots over each latch to keep it closed. Simply rotate the knobs and open each latch to quickly fold up the bike.

  7. Dalloy Aluminum Frame with Brushed Coating -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Frame
The frame is made out of Dalloy aluminum that is lightweight yet 20 percent stronger than standard aluminum alloy. This makes the Mariner D8 sturdier when riding over pot holes, curbs, and other road hazards. It also has a brushed coating that helps prevent corrosion so it's great for use around salt water. This makes it a great bike to carry on your boat for touring seaside communities.

  8. Telescoping Handlebars with Ergonomic Grips -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Handlebars
The telescoping handlebars are firm yet move smoothly so the bike is easy to steer. They are easy to adjust to accommodate your height, and you can do it in seconds. Just loosen the quick-clamp, slide the handlebars to your desired height, and close the quick-clamp.

  9. Shimano Trigger Shifter -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Shifter
The trigger shifter is located on the right side of the handlebars next to the hand brake. It has an optical display so you can easily see what gear you are in. It lets you easily shift gears up and down using your thumb and index finger without having to move your hand off the grip.

  10. Handlebar Brake Levers -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Brake Levers
The handlebar brake levers are located in front of each hand grip so you can steer and brake without having to move your hands. The right hand brake lever stops the rear wheel and the left hand brake lever stops the front wheel. The soft, ergonomic hand grips are over-sized and easy to grip so your hands won't slide off them while steering.

  11. Shimano Mechanical V-Brakes -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Disk Brakes
The Shimano mechanical front and rear V-brakes let you stop the bike quickly, which is great when you are riding on busy city streets. They are easy to maintain, they won't damage your wheels or spokes, and they have 110-mm arms for ample clearance over the fenders.

  12. Shimano Hubs with Stainless Steel Spokes -
    Dahon Mariner D8 Hubs
The Shimano 28-hole rear hub and 20-hole front hub let the wheels spin smoothly and quietly. The hubs are connected to the rims by stainless steel spokes that are strong and rust resistant. The fork has an integrated crown that provides a safe and sturdy connection to the front hub. The rear hub has an aluminum axle that is lightweight yet stiff so it can easily transfer the force created while pedaling to the rear wheel without breaking or getting too hot.

Video Transcript for Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike Review

Hey everyone. Today we're going to take a look at the Dahon Mariner Folding Bike. Now this bike is going to be a great option for any commuters out there who may be limited on space. You might live in an apartment, and you just need a compact and lightweight bike to be able to get you from point A to point B.Now the biggest appeal for this bike is going to be that it folds up into a compact size. That's going to make it very easy to store. It's going to make it very easy to transport as well.

The thing that kind of sticks out about this bike when compared to other folding bikes is that the handlebars actually fold down like so. It's going make it a lot easier to make it compact. You're not going to have to worry about taking the handlebars off or just them being in the way. A little tip, you do want to make sure you turn your seat sideways. It's going to make it easier for when it folds up.

We'll fold the folder pedals in, and then the magnet is going to make sure that it holds it together very well. One small detail about this bike that does go a long way and is noticeable is that the seat post tube comes straight down and makes contact with the ground. That kind of forms a tripod along with the two tires, making sure it can stand up on its own. You're not going to have to worry about leaning it up against a wall or anything like that. And it's going to be just as easy to get it unfolded and ready for use. Both the seat post tube and the handlebars are going to be adjustable in height. This is going to give you full adjustability so you can make it comfortable for your ride.

Really, if you're just within the range of 5'4" to 6'3", you're going to have a comfortable ride. And it's also going to have a weight capacity of 230 pounds. The handlebars are going to have really good grip to them. So even if you're riding it some wet conditions, you're still going to be able to keep a hold of them and maintain control of your bike. We're going to have breaks on both sides for the front and the rear. It's going to have some great stopping power, like I said, even in wet conditions.

And then on the right side you are going to have the Shimano trigger shifter. It is going to have an optical readout to let you know which gear you're in, and then with your index finger and thumb you can change gears. You are going to have eight speeds on this bike. With that shifter you are going to have the Shimano ALTUS Derailleur. This is going to make for easy and smooth sifting between your gears. That's important because you want as little delay as possible when changing gears. Both of our pedals are going to be able to fold up just by pulling in on the inside. Brings it up. You're going to conserve about four to five inches per pedal when folding it up. The alloy aluminum frame is going to be very durable and lightweight. So whether it's folded up or folded out like this, it's going to be very light and easy to handle. And it's also going to be very resistant to rust and corrosion. So this is also going to be good for if you're a boater and you like to ride your bike around when you dock at certain places. We are going to have a cargo rack just above our back wheel with the included elastic strap. It's going to make it very easy to secure any small bags that you would like to take with you on your trip. Pull it across, bring it down, and hook it in in place. The Citizen Touring Tires on our Dahon are going to grip pavement much better than your standard bike. This is going to make it great for if you commute in the city or other urban area. The fenders on both the back and the front wheels are going to do a great job of making sure that it doesn't throw up any mud or of water on you while you're riding.Well, thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our look at the Dahon Mariner Folding Bike.
