Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

The tail light wiring kit for our 2014 Honda CRV came complete with good instructions. It was challenging to get the wiring through the chassis from front to the back, but accomplished with patience and good floor jacks. The system has performed as expected. We are thankful for the Hopkins kit.

Ordering and shipping was fast and easy. Products arrived in good condition. I haven't installed them yet, but it all looks as advertised. Not my first order with etrailer and the customer service was outstanding as always. Why anyone would order from any place other then etrailer I cannot fathom.

After one year, I couldnt be happier. etrailer never disappoints!

I was not sure that I would be able to do this installation by myself until I looked at your videos. With your help, I had the installations along with the wiring completed in two days. Thank you for providing the video instructions for us. I would highly recommend etrailer.com to anyone who wants to have a hitch or baseplate installed, but thinks the cost of installation is to high right now. I saved nearly $1000.00 doing it myself, and I know that it was done the correctly. I received the items in good condition and in a timely manner. Thank You!

2014 Honda CR-V

After watching the installation video I found this tail light wiring kit easy to install and added it at the same time as my tow bar base plate. For a little extra protection I routed the wiring harness through a wiring loom which added a little extra time, but overall should be worth it. The wiring system works great and I highly recommend it.

2014 Ford Edge

This taillight wiring kit for my 2014 Honda CRV was perfect and easy to install without splicing original wires, when running wires to under vehicle make sure to keep away from any turning components or heat sources, I ran mine along the edge of car around wheel wells tucked inside of trim and along the rocker panel to the front under side of radiator zip tied along the way.

by:
2014 Honda CR-V

Base plate video was very helpful, did in less than 3hours. Wiring for Honda CRV was easy to install.
All products were delivered on time. Would order any other products needed from etrailer.
Thanks

Honda CR-V

Good quality product. Easy to install on my CRV. Video by etrailer was very helpful. Love the fact that all I need to do now is plug the harness in to my RV. Because my RV connection is a 7 pin connector, now I have to rewire the CARB plug to a suitable 7 pin connector to go with my Roadmaster tow bar

Great! Toad lights work every time plus I now have a 12 volt feed to my toad battery. No more worries.

Honda

This wiring harness works great for operating the brake and turn signal lights on my 2012 Honda CRV using the existing bulbs. This is the second one I have installed. The first one I installed had the diodes burned out when I bought a new car battery, and the installer shorted the positive to the negative with his wrench when tightening the cable to the battery post. So, be careful about that.

I was not sure about purchasing and installing the Hopkins Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles until I watched the etrailer's video instructions for installation. It gave me confidence to do it myself. Works as advertised for the last 8 months.

This was exactly the plug and go harness for flat towing that I had hoped for! The connections were easy, but running the harness from rear to front was more challenging; just the nature of the underbody. The installation video is excellent. I have used this wiring for the past year..no problems. Would definitely reccomend.

Still working fine. Thanks again for a good product.

I can't emphasize how much I appreciate that this kit is a true Plug-and-Play part! The hardest part was safely routing the wires around moving and/or hot vehicle components. I ended up ordering some plastic wire loom to further protect the wires. I had about one foot of excess wire length at the connector end after routing the wire from the driver's rear corner, underneath near the left rocker panel, up the driver's side of firewall near the brake booster, around the strut tower, the fuse box, behind the headlight, next to the radiator and alongside the driver's fog light and exterior temp sensor harnesses, and finally to the 6-pole connector that's mounted on the base plate.

I purchased a wiring harness for our 2014 CRV so that I can use the vehicle as a dingy behind our new 2016 Thor Miramar. I installed the wiring harness myself. Been using it for a year now and have not had any problems. This is truly a plug and play device. You simply unplug the tail light connectors and insert this in-line and you're good-to-go.

2014 Honda CR-V

Product was exactly as described and matched my 2014 CR-V light system exactly. The installation video was very helpful and I was able to do the work fairly easily with only the use of 2 auto ramps on the drivers side (ds), although all 4 wheels up might have been easier. I had installed a trailer hitch earlier which hindered the crossing to the passenger side; however the porthole I had made for that installation on the ds aided in getting the wiring to the top of the ds rear wheel

by:
2013 Honda CR-V

I received the HM56304 towed vehicle tail light wiring kit very quickly. After watching the Video a couple times I was able to install the kit in about 2 and 1/2 hours on my 2013 Honda CR-V. It is all plug and play so the only hard part was routing the wires from the rear of the CR-V to the front under the car. I'm old and not small. I used roll on ramps in the rear and then moved them to the front to finish the routing. This custom kit is much better than the generic wiring kit I used on my last TOAD. The video was very helpful.

2014 Honda CR-V

Installed my self and I'm 70 years young. Took about 4 hrs. total time. Installed on a 2014 Honda CRV. Was dreading removing the famous 4 yellow clips on the front grille everyone was complaining about but pulling the grill the way the video shows is the way to go. I thought some of the plastic clips would break but none did, but you must be careful.

Shipped and arrived in just a few days and on time. Box was torn open but everything inside was fine.

The fit was perfect and no drilling was required except for installing the brakeaway switch which was not part of the kit anyway.

by:
Ford Flex

It was by far the easiest wiring kit to install plug it in no fuss ! Honda CR-V are not the best to work on because of the under carriage being all plastic. The VIDEO is the only way to go as far as route of harness and installing the only thing I did different was put flex tubing around harness for extra protection or peace of mind !!!
I'm telling you etrailer is the only way to go they have the best staff to get you what you need when you need it and products top of the line!!!

by:
2014 Honda CR-V

The diode wiring kit performs great on my 2017 Honda CRV.
I do continue to have a dead battery after towing because e-trailer suggested pulling the incorrect fuse.
No one seems to know which fuse keeps the battery from dying. Not #14 and not #19. Still waiting for the correct fix here.

by:

Easy to install and works as expected. This has been installed for over a year and have proven to be problem free. Just be careful when plugging and unplugging to the 4 wire connector. I did have to splice in a new connector but that was after many plug/unplug cycles.

by:
2013 Honda CR-V

this wire harness is a plug and play product easy to install with great instructions and great video on line. have used for over a year with no problems. also best price on the internet. thanks etrailer.

I just received the Hopkins taillight wiring kit for our Honda CR-V. It arrived much sooner than expected and it was exactly as described in the etrailer.com description. I haven't installed the wiring kit yet but after viewing the excellent CR-V installation video I don't expect any problems. I have used etrailer.com for a number of purchases and every transaction was superior in service and execution.

Took about one hour to install, instructions were very good. Worked perfect and the quality appears to be very good.

I have not started to install my tow brackets nor the wiring kit I bought. BUT, I'm 67 years old and obviously have been buying things on the Internet and mail order for many years, and I have NEVER received such great service from my initial order to the tech back up I received. I'm prepared for a difficult installation because I'm NOT a mechanic but I have no doubt that the tech team will help in anyway I need. In closing this is a great company and I won't buy anywhere else. Thanks to Marcia S., Jameson C. and Patrick B. Etrailer management, these are great employees and I will ask for them in the future if I'm allowed to do so. I will send pictures later showing the install but rest assured it won't be pretty. I'm about as mechanically inclined as a toad.

Yes, for a tow bar umbilical extension adapter to go between the 4-way flat of the part # HM56304 and a 7-way socket you'd want the Wesbar adapter part # 787196. This has a 5-way flat on one end and a 7-way blade connector on other. The difference between a 5-way and a 4-way is just the extra pin on the outside of the connector. This pin would simply be left off when used with a 4-way. I attached a link to a video for this adapter that shows it in use for you to check out as well.
