Hopkins Flat Tow Wiring Harness - HM56202

  • Custom
  • Tail Light Mount
  • Hopkins

Plug-and-play custom harness gets turn and brake signals on your towed car with no hardwiring or splicing, and no effect on your warranty. The built-in diodes protect your car from electrical feedback.

Features:

  • Allows your RV's tail, brake, and turn signals to display on your car's tail lights
  • Plugs right into car's connection points - no cutting or splicing
    • Custom designed for your vehicle
    • No effect on your warranty
  • Prevents feedback that can damage your vehicle's electrical components with diodes
  • Provides 4-way flat plug at front of towed car
    • Requires additional harness to connect to motorhome - sold separately
  • Includes wiring harness, mounting bracket, and installation hardware
  • 90-Day warranty

Notes:

  • A brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with a flat tow brake system. (See below.)
  • A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes will be needed to retain separate turn and brake signals. (See below.)

Combined Lighting System vs Separate Lighting System

Combined vs Seperate Lighting System

A combined lighting system, or 2-wire system, uses the same light bulb to signal both braking and turning. (In other words, the car signals a turn by flashing the brake light.)

A separate lighting system, or 3-wire system, has the brake signal and the turn signal light up independently of each other. Typically, the turn signal is amber.

To keep the separate lighting system on your car functioning properly while you're flat towing, add a wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes.

Do I Need a Brake Light Relay?

If the engine is off and your car's brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you need to install a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) with this kit. Without a relay, your car's brake signal will override the turn signal sent by the RV when you are slowing down to make a turn, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Other drivers will see that you're slowing down, but not that you're making a turn. With a brake light relay, you can signal both and travel safely.

2005 Jeep TJ

The parts I purchased to ei my jeep for towing were easy to install got the tow bar adapter but somewhat difficult or the wiring harness. Passenger side rear lights on my 2005 Tj were behind the charcoal filers in the rear fender and required a lot of work to access.

by:
2006 Jeep Wrangler

Pretty easy install on my 06 Jeep Wrangler. Watch the videos and it will all make sense for install. Had plenty of wire to reach. A stiff wire for fishing the wires across my fuel tank made the job easy.

by:

Great system! Plug and play, works as it should.
Works well!

Installed on an 02 Jeep Wrangler. Installation was as easy as following instructions. Works great. Highly recommended.
Alex at etrailer you are the best.

by:

Easy install, works great. Simple route to operate taillights on the toad without draining it’s battery since power comes from the RV.

2004 Jeep Wrangler

This was a breeze to install!! About 30 min and I had working lights on my Jeep and was ready to hook it up behind my motorhome. Price was great too. Stopped at my local RV dealer and he said he could get me a wiring kit for $250! Saw this one online for $50 bucks and took a chance. Sure glad I did! Disconnect a couple of plugs, plug in new harness, route the wires to the front and BOOM! Ready for the trip! Thanks guys!

Easy to install ! About an hour! Used some split flexible wire protection ( not included with purchase) Would recommend a 5ft 4 pole flat trailer connector extension when using a tow bar!

by:
2001 Jeep Wrangler

This wiring harness was exactly what I was looking for so that I could tow my jeep behind my RV. No cutting, just plug and play (er I mean tow). There was plenty of extra wiring at the front end so that I could route through the engine bay and mount under the front bumper so it was out of site but easily accessible. Worked perfectly!

Quality product, purchased a year ago. Installed in my Jeep in roughly 30 min give or take. The directions were easy to read and understand. I highly recommended this product to anyone wanting to wire in taillight for flat tow. You can’t beat the price for a good quality kit like this, a year later and still works flawlessly. This is a true plug and play product. Why pay a shop top $$$ when you can install a hopkins kit in an afternoon. Good job hopkins

by:

Instructions were wrong. Wires were too long no tape in box. And I now other than that it’s fine. have to buy an adapter cord to plug it in.

Ordered for a 01 jeep..My tow behind..Got it..installed it..works great to this day..

by:
2004 Jeep Wrangler

Good product. Install directions should include which plug in at each taillight should be used if you already have trailer hitch plug in wiring installed. Had to go to Youtube and find a video that talked about the correct colored wire you should connect to. Other than that, install went well.

by:

We installed the wiring harness and never could get it to work so now we use magnetic lights. It was labor intense too install and a little gun shy to re-order the same product. I am a mechanic and was very disappointed in the light unit.
Thanks, kinda nice to vent!

by:

I just finished installing this harness on my 2003 Wrangler. As any wiring on a Jeep, it was uncomfortable and tight to access the wiring. This is normal. The installation sheet instructions were inaccurate for my model, I have a career in automotive, so it was no problem for me. I installed this for flat towing of my Jeep. I ran the harness over the fuel tank and down the drivers side undercarriage, that is where the main harness and brake lines run.

by:

Just finished installing the light kit on my 2005 Wrangler TJ Sport. Everything went as expected. The installation video helped a great deal. The written instructions that came with the kit were incorrect for my year vehicle but the video was right on.
The lights work fine when hooked up to the motorhome and when unhooked.
Great product, plugged right in.

1999 Jeep TJ

After one year on the vehicle and also installing new LED lights, the wiring kit is still working. I love not having to add extra lights for towing.

  • Does Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness For Jeep Wrangler Have Diodes
The Curt # C55363 is a trailer wiring harness. There are no built-in diodes since this is designed to power the signal lights when towing a trailer. Since you are installing/using the InvisiBrake # RM-8700 I'm assuming you're looking for tow bar wiring like the # HM56202 which does have integrated diodes. I'm not sure which vehicle you have, I'm guessing a Wrangler based on the wiring harness you asked about. This wiring fits a 1998-2006 Jeep Wrangler.

  • Base Plate Kit Recommendation for a 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport Automatic and a Remco Tow Bar
Based on my research, your Remco tow bar should be compatible with all Blue Ox base plates, so for your 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport, I would recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, # BX1118. I would also recommend verifying that your tow bar is compatible with Blue Ox base plates. This base plate kit is compatible with the U-channel or double tube bumper. Before you install a base plate kit, I recommend checking your vehicle owners manual for flat tow compatibility. There may be certain restrictions...

  • Best Parts to Flat Tow a Jeep Wrangler TJ with D-Ring Adapters
Towing your Jeep Wrangler TJ behind your motorhome requires a tow bar, a kit to connect the tow bar to the Jeep, a lighting solution, and a braking system. You also may need a way to maintain the Jeep's battery while towing and a high-low adapter to keep the towing setup level. One of the best tow bars on the market is the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain, part # RM-676. It's a non-binding tow bar that makes it easier to connect on unlevel ground. The arms are also self-aligning to...

The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit part # RM-521424-5 is a better option for a base plate compared to the Roadmaster # RM-521424-4 that you referenced because the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit doesn't require you to leave the crossbar of your tow bar on the base plate to use the quick disconnect like the slightly older version. • Can a Jeep Wrangler be Flat Towed by the Front Bumper
I have a solution for you, however, I would not recommend mounting a tow bar directly to a bumper on a Jeep, whether it is OEM or an aftermarket bumper. Jeep does not recommend towing the Wrangler with the OEM bumper because it was not designed to pull the weight of the vehicle. Also, mounting a tow bar to a bumper would require drilling. Absolutely! We actually recommend doing this exact install a lot of the time.
