Rods Tubes with Reel Case

Thule Rod Vault Holder Construction

The carrier has 4 long tubes that accommodate fully assembled fly rods, so you don't have to break them down for transport. The large diameter allows you to bait them before you hit the road so you can cast as soon as you hit the stream. These tubes keep your rods separated and tangle free. Inside the tubes is a polypropylene lining that helps protect your rods from scratches and scuffs.

Thule Rod Vault Holder Construction

The spacious, glass-reinforced case houses 4 reels with fighting butts. A rubber strap on the inside of the case provides additional stability and prevents your rods from sliding forward and backward while you drive. The housing door won't interfere with your hatch back, even when it's opened. It also includes a keyed lock, so your rods are secure in the carrier.

Video Transcript for Thule Rod Vault 4 Rooftop Fly Rod Carrier Review

Adam: What's going on, everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Rod Vault 4 rooftop fly rod carrier. So this is the four rod carrier, but it also comes in a two rod carrier configuration as well. So depending on how many rods you have, how many friends you got that have rods too, we're going to be able to pick between two and four to get that equipment to your spot. So I go fly fishing quite often actually and one of the biggest hiccups is the fact that I have to find a place to store them. They're extremely long rods.

So with the long carrier, it makes it really, really easy. I don't have to break them down over time and that just takes a lot of time out of my fishing. So I want to go fishing. This is going to allow you to put them up in there and not have to break them down so you can get to the site a lot quicker. The nice thing about it is, too, I'm using a after-market roof bar now, but if you have the OEM bars, it's going to fit. The Aero bars, square bars, round bars, any type of bar you may have, we have multiple different hardware that we can choose from for it to fit those different style bars.

Another thing I like about it is it's lockable. So I have nice rods and I like to keep them that way and I like to keep them, so this way we can lock it all in with the contents of the little box here. Once you do that, press that and it folds right up and the safe of this little door here allows it to completely come up, and I like that.We have a little rubber piece here. It's got a magnet on this side, so let's just going to kind of hold all your rods in there and pretty much the reel, we need to make sure it's a diameter of four and a quarter inches or less for it to fit in here. But as you can see, I don't have to break down my rods at all.

I can take out this big old guy by myself and then I can go on and go fishing. So all in all, definitely helps with the speed of things. If you're one that likes to go fishing a lot, but doesn't have a lot of time, might as well get something like this just to make it a little bit quicker so you can go fishing a little bit longer. All in all, I would definitely use it, but one thing we need to think about, a lot of the saltwater fishing rods, they're not going to fit in here. You can see how small the diameter of that tube is and that's going to give us a little bit of trouble whenever we have a little bit thicker rods. But again, this is pretty much just for fly fishing rods.

So if you're a fly fishermen like me, I would definitely recommend it. Fresh out of the box, when I was assembling this thing, I realized all the plastic that is on the carrier itself is extremely high end plastic. It is going to be nice and treated. So it's not just your average plastic. It's extremely thick, has a lot of structure to it. So it's going to be really, really strong and keep everything nice and sealed up and divided. One thing I really like about it is it is mostly made of anodized aluminum. All the silver parts that you see here is all aluminum, so it's not going to rust away over time, so you can keep it up onto your roof. So you don't have to remove it every single time and worry about it rusting away. So that is awesome.I love the hinges. It's just one big hinge. I like that just because they don't get tweaked over time if there's just two on here. It's just a little bit less material that will eventually start to kind of warp and bend and stuff. But I'm not seeing that being an issue at all. The nice thing about it is, too, the inside of the rods isn't going to be aluminum. The little tubes that we put our rods in are going to have a polypropylene lining. So it's going to prevent any type of scratches or anything like that, so you don't have to worry about your rods getting all scratched up. And just the dividers that we have in here, it just keeps the rods nice and separate. I really like that. And of course, just this little extra straps just to kind of keep everything nice and in order. As far as dimensions go, we are going to have a depth of about 15 inches. From here to here is going to be the deepest part of the whole entire carrier, and then the height of this is going to be about eight inches and we're going to have an overall length of about 128 inches, which is a lot. So it's going to be great for your 10 foot rods and anything smaller than that. One issue that we did run into, as you can see up here, these kind of just go around these bars. We can actually move those. So you don't really have to move your bars for it to fit this. The rod holder will be able to adjust to fit the bars. All we need to focus on is we want to make sure that we have one clamp in front of this little bracket and we want one on the back end of the bracket. So there's a lot of adjustments, but we we're kind of limited a little bit. As you can see up front, we pretty much have it completely maxed out forward, but we still have a little bit of clearance issues with my hatch. This is an '01 Tahoe. You might not have it with any other, but if our bars we're a little bit taller, we'd be fine. Or if we had a little bit longer crossbars to put our bars on, it might be fine as well. But just keep that in mind. We tried to avoid it, but with everything that we have set up here, this was pretty much our only option. But we still have plenty of clearance and I can still go ahead and grab whatever I need out of the back. Like right here, I don't have any issues. So just be mindful of that. All in all, works really, really well. I'm really enjoying it so far.So what we're going to do is we're going to take it out on the test course. I'm curious to see how it holds up with the four different mounting points. But then after that, we're going to go ahead and show you guys how to install it. First things first, get it up onto your roof. I actually use an extra set of hands. It comes in about 35 pounds, not that heavy, but it's kind of awkward to put up there. So once you get all that squared away, what we're going to do is secure it to our bars. To do that, we're going to come up to the feet here and with the bolts out, we can actually rotate that, just like that. So we have two different pieces of hardware that come with our kit. We're going to have a longer one here, and we also have shorter ones, but I'm going to use the longer ones today because we are using some thick bars. You're about an inch and a half thick so longer ones are probably going to be what we need. The nice thing about it is the bottom plate is actually threaded. So we don't have to mess with any type of nuts or anything like that. So start threading those in by hand on both sides. What I like to do is just get everything threaded in real nicely, get it nice and snugged up to the bar. Then after that, we'll come back through here with the tool and get them all cinched down. But I'm going to do this for all four of the sides first, and then come back here with the tool and tighten it down the rest of the way, and I suggest you do the same. What I really like about the tool is it's long enough so I don't have to do all the tightening down here. I can just put it through up top and easily cinch these down.So once we're completely done, what we want to do is just go ahead and rotate this back. One thing I do suggest getting is going to be a little padlock. So on each of the feet here, we're going to have a little hole here. I would suggest just grabbing a lock. You can get one that's keyed if you want, but I like the coded locks just because you don't have to carry around another key with you, but this way with this lock down, it's going to be a little theft deterrent and no one's going to want to run off with your cool rod holder. Yeah, someone can come in here and cut this all up and stuff but if you put four padlocks on, that's quite a lot of work and it might just deter them away. So I just highly suggest getting that just because we can.Well, everyone that just about does it for our look at the Thule Rod Vault 4 roof mounted fly rod carrier, and I'm Adam with etrailer..
