Secure, Two-Piece Jaw

Q24 Two-Piece Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Q24 Color Indicator System

360-Degree Pivot

Curt's unique spherical axial bearing provides a durable pivot point that allows easy, 360-degree movement of the hitch head. This ball joint is designed for smooth, quiet operation with less clunking and chucking.

Note: Curt Q-Series fifth-wheel hitches are not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. The extra movement of these cushioned hitches keeps the Sidewinder from functioning properly. If using a slider, hitch will not adjust to lowest height setting.

R24 Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6-foot and 6-1/2-foot beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel C16546 Review

Today we're going to review part number 16546. This is the Curt Q24 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, with the Curt R24 slider. It's a dual jaw design with a 24,000 pound weight capacity. For demonstration purposes I do have it mounted on some base rails and the mounting bracket to give you an idea what it looks like in the vehicle. But the base rails and the mounting bracket are sold separately. This is a two jaw locking system right here. It provides a 360 degree jaw to king pin contact. It will give you less rattle, more security then the slide bar models. On the very back here, I'm going to show you in a minute when I turn it around here, it has a three point color-coded indicator system.

This will tell you if you we're hitch is ready to uncouple, couple or tow. You can actually see that color indicator from the cab of the tow vehicle. This head does have a unique spherical ax seal bearing which allows easy pivoting of the hitch head. It gives you a smooth 360 degree movement. Not just front to back, or side to side. This will actually move 360 degrees. It also has built-in cushioning, which will absorb the road shock.

The slider itself is a non-binding slider. You could see that it provides clearance which is required for short bed pickups to turn safely at slow speeds. It prevents the trailer from hitting The cab of your pick up during those sharp slow speed turns. The slider would move it 12 inches away from the bed of the truck toward the tailgate to give you that clearance. It does slide smoothly on these rounded, non-binding rods. It is designed to use on trucks with beds shorter than 8 feet, but it is not recommended for use on truck beds shorter than 6 feet.

It has a lockable handle. Right here it has a pin and clip. You can put a padlock through there if you prefer. We do sell padlocks separately. It is not included.

We would you sell it separately on our website. It does have the handle here which is a short throw, single handle operation. The self-lining head pivots for simple hook up. It does have three loop points. There's one right here a zerk fitting, a greased zerk fitting on each side. This will help lubricate the head. It also has easy removal. There is a two pin head removal. You just pull these clips right here. When I turn it around to show you, I'm going to show you the pins also. But it does have these two pin head removal, where you just pull the clips on each side, pull the pins out. You can actually remove the head by itself, and then the remainder also by yourself. It helps if you we're in a situation where you are by yourself and you need to take it out and remove the hitch from the vehicle. It does include everything shown here. It includes this plastic lube plate which you put on the king pin of your fifth wheel. It helps it glide smoothly into the hitch during the hook up. It also helps protect the head of the hitch here. It does include the hitch pins and clips which, when you drop this in two rails, these pins and clips will hold it into place. The other nice thing that it includes is these four rubber sound dampeners. What they are, as you can see they have a square cut out in them. Basically, the slider will have a tab front and rear on each side, so before you drop it into the rails, you will put it through this, and this will be between the slider and the rails. So this piece of rubber will help eliminate any rattle or noise. Also, this inch, the cross member that the hitch head is in and has an adjustment of about 4 inches height adjustment. There's different rows of holes that you can go up or down on. It gives you a height adjustment range from about 13 inches to 17 inches and that would be the measurement from the top of this hitch Ed to your truck bed. You can adjust it for your specific application. I did mention the base rails and the installation kit is sold separately. This will drop into industry standard base rails made by Curt, drawl tight, hidden hitch, ProSeries, Regent Valley. Now, as far as the mounting brackets, we do recommend they do make a vehicle specific bracket for some vehicles, not every vehicle. But if you go to our website, put in your year and model vehicle, if it does show a custom fit vehicle specific bracket, we would recommend to do that. Because it will cut your installation time in half. Because on these mounting brackets they will have holes already drilled that would line up with holes in your frame. It saves you a lot of installation time. This is a sturdy steel construction. It has a durable carbide powder coat finish. Gross towing weight capacity is 24,000 pounds. Vertical load limit, or pin weight capacity is 6000 pounds. The slider does move 12 inches front to back. Again, I mentioned that height adjustment for the head is 13 to 17 inches. A few things, first I'm going to show you how this head would operate. Right now we have the pin and clip with the latch so that the handle is closed, the jaws are closed. Basically what we are going to do is pull the pin and clip out, raise up on this handle. Then what you are able to do, if you watch the jaws, if you pull it all the way out, once you pull it far enough, this will lock down and hold it. You can see that the jaws are open. It's all uncoupled. If you are ready to couple, what you want to do is just raise up on this handle a little bit. Let's pull out on this, raise this up. Then you can drop it down. Now it's ready to couple. It will show you the yellow back here. Again I am going to spinet around to show you. Basically, what you are ready to do now, I have a replica of a king pin, this would be like what is on your fifth wheel. When the slides in around the dual jaws, when it goes in far enough, you can see that the jaws will completely click around here. The handle will go completely closed, this latch will lock it into place. It shows green back here. You can put your pin and clip in, or you can even put a padlock. We do sell those separately if you want additional security. Now you can see that it is locked into place. What I'm going to do again is, let me rotate this around. Let me see if we can turn it here just to give you an idea of the three point color-coded system. I think you will be able to see it right there. Right here you can see the circle right here has got the three colors. It has yellow for couple, when it shows yellow it is ready to couple. It shows red, that means that it is uncoupled. Green, means that it is ready to go for towing. Right now and you can see this from the cab of the tow vehicle. If you look now, it showing green right here in this indicator. That means the kingpin is in and ready to tow. If you go to pull it out, raise up on this, you pull it all the way out. You can see now that indicator is showing red, which means it is uncoupled. If you want to get it ready to couple back, you just pull up on this again. Now it is in the yellow, showing it is ready to be copied. Then, if you just slide the king pin in, you see it slides over, now showing green, the latch drops down and locks it into place. You are ready to go. These are the two pins that I was mentioning with the clips. If you , pull those pins out you can remove the head out of the cross member. It makes it easier for one person to remove it. The last thing that I want to show you is the slider, how that operates. Let's spin it back around. On the slider right now, it also has a color indicator. On this rod here, you can see that right now it is in the towing position so it is all the way closest to the cab of the tow vehicle. It's not showing any color over here, let me just turn it a little bit. Where this rod is, there is no colors showing there. But if you look on the side, you'll see that it is showing green. There is a green ring showing. Green means it's in the locked towed position, ready to go. What we will do is if you get to your campsite and you want to put it in the maneuvering position, what you want to do is go to this handle, go ahead and pull it out and then turn it a little bit counterclockwise. That will move this little wedge here toward the rear of the vehicle. Now it is in the open position, you will see that it is red. Let me just turn it again. See this line around here showing it's red, that means it's not locked so the slider is going to move. There is nothing over here to see. Now that it is ready to go if it's the slide back, this will go toward the tailgate 12 inches to give you that maneuvering in short turns. You and see once it gets to there, 12 inches, it slides in. There's a groove there that it will slide over. Again, it's not showing anything here. But if you go over to the side, you will see the green ring around there. That means it's locked into the maneuvering position. Then, to go back the same way, you just move the handle the opposite way. So you just pull out on this and then move it clockwise. That moves the tab pointing towards the tow vehicle. You just do the opposite, and then you'll see that it is unlocked. Again, the colors Will show. You can slide it back once it hits the tow position, boom it locks into place. You're ready to go. Very simple installation, easy to operate. That should do it for the review part number C16546. The Curt Q24 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch. On the Curt R24 slider and a 24,000 pound weight capacity. .

Review from a similar Curt Q24 in Fifth Wheel

The items I ordered shipped the next day, I had them within a few days. The assembly of the hitch was really easy, 4 bolts and lock washers torqued to 100 ft lbs. The only thing out of adjustment was the legs for the ford hitch prep. The clamps are adjusted using a castle nut and pin, I had to back out the four castle nut's about a quarer to half turn to be able to latch them to my truck. But it was nice having that come pre assembled. The hitch is a great quality. I like the color system red to un latch, yellow to couple and green to tow. I just don't know how to close the jaws when the unit is not in use. 177889

Very strong hitch. I like that it easily can be taken apart, makes it not so heavy to install. Glad it has grease fittings, should last longer. Positive indication of locking to kingpin. Came within 2 days of placing the order. Dual jaws give a sense of security. 125521

Quick delivers, easy to put together. Only complaint was the shipping box was a bit torn up. Didn't loose anything but it would have been easy for the bag of bolts to get lost. 181044

  • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch And Installation Kit For 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Short Bed
  • We have a few options that may work for your 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. Since you said you have a short bed you will need a slider hitch at the least, and you said you have bed rails that you do not wish to take off. This would then require a hitch that has more height so you have clearance for the rails. I was not able to find the number 30031 you asked about. You would need to verify the hitch and what its capabilities were to safely use it for your camper. I will make some recommendations...

  • We have a couple options for you, but they are going to depend on a few factors. If the dry weight of your 37 ft King of the Road Fifth Wheel Trailer is 20,000 lbs, then you will want to verify the gross trailer weight, GTW, of your trailer when fully loaded. Knowing the GTW will allow us to choose a hitch that will support your trailer. The highest weight capacity for a hitch that we offer is 24,000 lbs GTW.
