Note: This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

A slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 22-1/2" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

The Autoslide has a built-in roller-and-guide assembly that allows for smooth, controlled, and automatic movement. As your truck turns, this assembly also turns. When the assembly turns, an arm in the base of the hitch moves down 1 of 2 tracks in the interior of the base. This action causes the head to be pushed down one of the exterior tracks in the base. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the roller-and guide assembly inside the Autoslide forces the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the roller-and-guide assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a 5th-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit a Demco UMS custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately). The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into the receivers in your truck bed, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 UMS receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the receivers and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (22-1/2")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - DM8550041 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco Single Jaw Hijacker Auto Slide fifth wheel trailer hitch with the slider. This is for the under bed mount and this has a thirteen thousand bound weight capacity. This fifth wheel hitch will mount in your short bed truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It is an automatic slider which will provide clearance that's required for your short bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds, and there's no more getting into and out of your truck to operate a manual slider. This head will slide toward the tailgate when you turn and then back toward the cab when you straighten out. On the underneath here, it uses a roller and guide assembly which will create a nice smooth and controlled movement. Basically on a fifth wheel when you hook up your pin box, usually when you do your turning your kingpin would be spinning, the pin box would turn.

What this basically does is it would hold your pin box secure from turning and the actual hitch head would turn. Basically what happens is if you're towing and your trailer's straight behind you, it will stay in this position closest to the cab. When you get into a position where you're going to do some sharp turns, what'll happen as is you turn, once this turns to about ten to fifteen degrees then it'll start automatically sliding towards the back tailgate to get you that extra clearance that'll be needed. When you straighten out it'll slide back up and lock into the straight ahead position. What happens is when it rotates it creates that force that'll move that automatic slider back. It does have these built in brackets right up here on the hitch head. These are to stabilize your pin box so the kingpin won't rotate.

There's no need for separate capture plates on a standard cushioned, non-cushioned pin box. What happens is, you see these two bolts and nuts right here You just loosen those, loosen the jam nut and then back the bolt out and you can adjust these bars in or out. It'll range anywhere from twelve inches wide up to fourteen inches wide for a standard pin box. Once your pin box gets in there and your kingpin's all hooked up, just bring these out to the pin box and then tighten your bolt down to hold it. Then take the jam nut and tighten that up. It'll hold it in that position so it doesn't move.

This head does use a wrap around, single piece jaw which would provide a secure connection. It gives you a three hundred and sixty degree jaw to kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle and more security than the slide bar jaws. If you notice on the front there's a very thick three quarter inch think solid steel locking bar and that's to reinforce the connection of your coupled trailer. Once the jaw goes around the kingpin, this solid steel locking bar will automatically lock into place when the jaw closes. The hitch head is a double pivot hitch head. It eases hook up, helps limit chucking, pivots front to back and it also goes side to side. This part will come with the side plates.

I've already installed them on to the hitch base for the under bed mounts and they have three height settings. There's three rows of holes in the plate, and two rows of holes in the hitch base, so it'll line you up. It'll give you three height settings from fifteen and a half inches, sixteen and three quarters and eighteen and one quarter are your three choices so you can get it close to get your trailer and tow vehicles as level as possible, which is what you want to do. Again, these are for the under bed mounts so it has the . basically what it is is they're designed to fit in the mounts that are under your bed. If you just pull this clip off you can see you rotate that lever ninety degrees. Do it on each . at one here, one over there, and one over there. Then that'll drop into the under bed mounts. Once they drop in, just turn it back to ninety degrees. It'll lock those tabs in there and then to secure the handle, just drop your pin through and then take your clip and clip it just like that. That'll hold it into place. You do that on all four corners. It does use cushioned polyurethane dampers underneath here to help reduce noise and absorb road shock. The handle is a spring loaded handle. It has a nice comfort grip to allow for simple coupling. It has this tethered safety pin, and when you remove it it'll stay tethered so you don't lose it, and it'll let you secure the handle in the open or the closed position. This whole part is a sturdy steel construction. It has a nice rust resistant black powder coat finish over all the parts. It does also come with . I want to mention this adjustable outrigger bar right up here at the front. This outrigger bar is designed to help carry and distribute the hitch and trailer weight when that hitch is at its full travel distance, all the way towards the tailgate. This is a very simple installation. Just use your base rails and installation kit. If you do need those, we do sell those separately on our website. It is compatible to fit the B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, Valley, all the above bed base rails. This part is made in the USA. The specs on this, it's designed for use on five and a half foot and six foot truck beds. It's designed to fit standard pin boxes, twelve inches up to fourteen inches wide. Now, if you do use a cushioned pin box on your trailer like the Glide Ride, the MORryde, the Trailair Tri Glide and the fifth Airborne, with those it does require locking plates. They are required to lock those into position. Those we do sell separately on our website. Gross towing weight capacity on this is thirteen thousand pounds. Vertical load limit, or pin weight capacity, is three thousand two hundred and fifty pounds. The amount of travel front to back is twenty two and a half inches. We mentioned the hitch height, fifteen and a half inches, sixteen and three quarter and eighteen and one quarter hitch height adjustment. What I'm going to show you right now, I have an example of a kingpin right here. I'll show you how it connects in to the hitch head. Just pop off that pinning clip. That'll release your handle. Just take your handle, and it's spring loaded so when you pull it all the way out, you can see it locks the jaw open. It's ready to hook up, so when you're backing up to couple you can see the kingpin will slide right in. Once it gets in far enough, it'll trigger that jaw to completely wrap around that kingpin. The handle comes back, lines up. That bar is locking it all into place and all you have to do is take your pinning clip, drop it right through the hole there, clip it and you're all ready to go. Simple as that. That should do it for the review of the Demco Single Jaw Hijacker Auto Slide fifth wheel trailer hitch with slider for under bed mount, and a thirteen thousand pound weight capacity.

The hitch is great. I installed it myself and it worked very well pulling a 5th Wheel Trailer across the country last year. I have learned however that one must start out from corners slower to avoid a large "clunk" as the hitch slides in the frame per the inherent design. Great Product! 486223

Im very happy with the hitch. Ive towed for close to 15,000 miles. I did however travel over one very uneven road and cracked a weld on the adjustable side guide on the top plate. Great hitch!

If you have to have a slider this is the one to buy. I’ve now driven with it about 5000 miles..the only down side is that you have to hook and unhook with the truck perfectly straight in line with the trailer. But it does work perfectly as advertised. 517815

This 5th wheel hitch performs exactly as advertised, automatically extending the trailer rearward whenever making a tight turn with the truck. I can back my short bed Ram 2500 into a 90 degree angle between the truck and the trailer without trailer's nose (Grand Design Reflection 337 RLS) coming too close to the cab. This is why I bought this hitch -- I wasn't interested in having to get out of the truck to manually slide the trailer rearward when maneuvering in tight places. The automatic extending feature of the hitch is the greatest thing since canned beer! 616620

Enjoy the new hitch , don't have to worry about hitting back of the cab anymore. I highly recommend if you have short box on your truck. You don't have to get out and pull a lever so it slide back, it does it automatically.. 308340

The hitch was easy to install and works perfectly. It's heavy, so moving it out of the truck by myself is not an option like my old hitch (SOLID construction). Packing for shipment was very good, but plan to have a strong friend or a hand truck (as I did). Installation went well with no issues. Prior to purchasing, I had a couple of questions so I called the company. The rep answered all my questions without issue. 584322

THE BEST FUNCTIONAL SHORT BED 5th WHEEL HITCH OUT THERE BUT ALSO THE HEAVIEST AND THE MOST DIFFICULT TO REMOVE AND REINSTALL. I HAD TO TAKE IT TO A GARAGE TO REMOVE IT AND AGAIN TO REINSTALL IT. I JUST LEAVE IT IN THE TRUCK BED NOW RATHER THAN FIGHT WITH IT.

Ok... The darn thing weighs a ton! but that was outlined in their info... Just want to make that known. It took three of us to put in the base minus the "head". That was work !! As for the unit, it does as advertised. It swivels when turning and moves aft providing plenty of cab clearance. Don't expect to do a 90 degree turn however, but for normal situations it works fine. One thing I'd love to see is an "adjustment" to move (slide) the "head" a little more rearward when connecting. I only have about 6" of clearance with the gate down so I have to be nearly perfectly aligned to make the hookup. Speaking of which, hooking up can be a challenge. The clamps must have some "slack" and not be too tight against the pin box or alignment becomes a real issue. Also, if you aren't aligned with the trailer when disconnecting you'll need to have that same "off alignment" position when reconnecting as the "head" cannot be moved at all by hand. This can make for having to loosen the clamps, make the hook up, straighten the truck with the trailer and then have to re tighten the clamps. All in all, the unit is as expected and does provide movement aft and forward as you turn. Makes parking in that tight spot a bit less nerve racking... As for Customer Support Demco is spot on!! I had a couple of set up issues. One call cleared the misunderstanding on my end and the install went fine after that. On a second call, they also explained how to set up the clamps to better help with the above mentioned issues. But the nature of the design does not allow much leeway. Enjoy!!! 601243

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

I have purchased several different products from etrailer. The folks there have been the most helpful, courteous that I believe I have ever dealt with on the internet... I purchased a demco slider 5th wheel hitch in February 2018. It arrived on time in good condition. I installed in a Ford F-350 with factory puck system I had no issues with install. I did watch the videos online and did find them helpful. I purchased this hitch because with the newer Fords as I'm sure some have experienced they sit about 3" higher than the trucks prior 2017. With my existing hitchI couldn't get low enough and the demco it did allow me to go3 '' lower. Even though the camper still runs a little high in the front its still a whole lot better than what it was. So after one year of use it did work well. It was a little bigger than my previous hitch it and is not an easy job to do by yourself without the help of some sort of hoist. All said I am happy with this product and would give it a good recommendation. 607004

The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

The hitch is indeed heavy. If you have a chain hoist available, using a lifting bracket like part # DM6100

see link would certainly make installing and removing the hitch much easier.

Hello, This hitch has been awesome. It works perfectly all the time. My only gripe would be that the head doesn’t fall down automatically. I have to get out of the truck to tilt it down when connecting to my trailer. Other than that, I’m very satisfied with the design and operation of the hitch. Thank You 521792

Nice product. Pretty much idiot proof once you get it set up. After that just hook up and go. No worries about crushing your cab when running a short bed. Built well. Heavy duty. Only complaint would be the weight manually getting it in and out. 301924

I INSTALLED THE DEMCO HIJACKER AUTOSLIDE FITH WHEEL HITCH IN MY 17 F250 WITH THE FACTORY PREP PACKAGE. THE HITCH FIT PERFECTLY INTO THE FACTORY PUCK SYSTEM. DID NEED A FRIENDS HELP DO TO THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE OPERTION OF THE AUTOSLIDE AND THE FACT THAT I DON'T REALLY HAVE TO WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT THE TRAILER CONTACTING THE CAB OF TRUCK SINCE I HAVE A 6 FOOT BED. THIS IS THE FIRST FIFTH WHEEL HITCH I HAVE EVER USED BUT WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT HAS A TRUCK WITH A SHORT BED. ONLY 4 STARS BECAUSE OF THE LEARNING CURVE OF HITCHING UP AND THE THING IS PRETTY HEAVY. ONCE I LEARNED THAT THE HITCH AND THE TRUCK HAVE TO BE PRETTY STRAIGHT IN LINE DUE TO THE CAPTURE PLATES HITCHING UP HAS BECOME A NONE ISSUE. I DID PURCHASE AN ENGINE HOIST SO THAT I CAN REMOVE THE HITCH FROM THE BED OF MY TRUCK BY MYSELF IF I NEED TO, BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT JUST STAYS MOUNTED. I ALSO LOVE THE FACT THAT IT HAS A HIGHT ADJUSTMENT WHICH ALLOWED IT TO STILL FIT UNDER MY BEDS TONNEAU. OVERALL VERY SATISFIELD WITH PURCHASE 600745

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

The Demco hitch works okay once it is latched, but it is really hard to get it locked to the pin. The saddle tries to fall forward, making it hard for the pin to hit home. Once while hooking up, it seemed to be latched, but when I pulled forward, the whole trailer landed on the bed sides! Luckily, the pin landed on the base of the hitch, and no damage was done to the puller, even though the trailer made contact with it. It is difficult to hook up because you have to be pretty much exactly straight with the pin box. Sometimes when I start out from a standing stop, it will jerk really hard. I haven't figured out what causes that. I will give this hitch 2 stars because it is so hard to hook up. 465626

After taking out two rear windows over the years, this was the only way to go. It took me a couple of tries to get the right height and I should have mounted the hitch to the rear in its rails. I think that's mostly on me because I am used to assembling things so I must not have been understanding the instructions. Anyway, once mounted it is a thing of beauty. This is the hitch that is built for the factory installed mount in our new Ford Superduty and it fits like a glove. 472960

this unit is great! I have used it several times. All last year including going to Pennsylvania. If I had to rate one fault it would be when we start out from a dead stop it jerks with a noise. Other than that it is great and would not give it up. 365724

The Demco slider hitch is an awesome hitch but it does have it's glitches and we are still working those out. But it is so convenient not having to get out of my truck and pull levers to make tight turns. Also, eTrailer has been exceptional with any problems that I have encountered and has gone above and beyond to make sure that I am satisfied with their products. 553103

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty, smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

I had trouble with this hitch at first. I could not get it to close and latch properly when I backed into the king pin. I worked with tech services and ended up replacing the inner pivot parts and I have really not had any issues since. Because I have to have the locking plate for my pin box, you do have to line up the truck just right for it to latch properly, but once you figure that out, it is easy. The auto slide feature works really good. I have a short bed RAM truck and I have completely turned 90 degrees with my trailer attached and it slides back with no issues to miss my cab. I highly recommend this hitch. Also the Demco Tech Services guys are great to work with. 338908

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

I've been using the Hijacker 1800 auto slide hitch for my 38' 5er for a year now and I'm very satisfied with it's performance. For the first couple of months of use I had a terrible time getting the jaws to lock when reconnecting to my trailer. Once, I tried for an hour and finally called Demco. somehow we got it to lock but I was really not sure what made it work. It continued to give me problems after that. I finally figured out that after backing onto the trailer pin box I would set the parking brake and try to pin the handle without success because I was leaving some back pressure on the jaws against the king pin. I started making sure there was no back or forward pressure on the jaws before setting the parking break...no problem since as long as I am careful about this issue. On level ground I put the truck in neutral and let it move slightly forward or back, whichever way it wants to go. Works nearly every time. My only problem now is accelerating away from a stop it feels like the trailer slips back in the hitch with a big jerk. I've adjusted the bolt in the front of the hitch frame as the instructions indicate (back off 1/2 turn after the bolt touches) but no dice. I've tried several adjustments and it does't change a thing. Studying the hitch I can't see where the slack is. Otherwise, for turns and overall functioning it works perfectly...Thanks DEMCO. 481306

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2005 Ford F-150 5-1/2 Foot Bed
  • I can help explain this evolution to you to help you better understand. The reason short bed trucks like your 5-1/2 foot Ford F-150 needed the sidewinder was because of clearance. A sliding hitch alone wouldn't give the camper/rv enough room when turning to not impact the truck cab. Due to popular demand the Sidewinder was born and allowed many short bed truck customers to tow because it moved the pivot point from a standard non-sliding hitch back 22 inches.
