Note: This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

A slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 22-1/2" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

The Autoslide has a built-in roller-and-guide assembly that allows for smooth, controlled, and automatic movement. As your truck turns, this assembly also turns. When the assembly turns, an arm in the base of the hitch moves down 1 of 2 tracks in the interior of the base. This action causes the head to be pushed down one of the exterior tracks in the base. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the roller-and guide assembly inside the Autoslide forces the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the roller-and-guide assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a 5th-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (22-1/2")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Very happy with the product. The only draw back is the weight. Can't be loaded/unloaded by one person. A good cross-sell opportunity is to offer a tool for removal. When I first got it, it didn't fit the truck. Support team was helpful and responsive. It seemed to be due to the bed spray. I was able to get it to mount perfectly by loosening a bolt under the truck, and then smoothing the edges of the locks in the rails. 352378

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

Comments
The hitch is indeed heavy. If you have a chain hoist available, using a lifting bracket like part # DM6100
Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket
$70.21
see link would certainly make installing and removing the hitch much easier.

Unit is heavy and well built. Install was easy, just bolt on side plates on, drop the base on the adapter plate and pin it, put head assembly on and pin that, that's all there is to it. Looking forward to many years of towing with this unit. 377393

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I would not buy this hitch again because -- 1. It takes up to much space in the truck bed 2. It is over built thus weighs to much 3. It is very hard to hook up because the hitch swivels when unhooking, thus making the hooking up very difficult lining up on an angle. 4. With this hitch I cannot lock out the swivel feature. My old hitch I could lock it out I would buy from E Trailer again there sales people are great and delivered time was great. The hitch choice was my mistake not E Trailer's 548218

Comments
This demco hitch part DM8550034 is a completely gear driven hitch. Whichever angle you uncouple at is the same position the head will stay in until it is coupled back up. It is a good idea to couple up at as straight of an angle as possible. If there is ever a situation where you have to uncouple at an angle you can physically turn the head back to a straight position by taking the head off the hitch and putting a straight bar through the assembly for some leverage. The head should not be swiveling during coupling unless the main bolt is loose. The bolt that holds the gear assembly together has to be torqued to the specific foot lbs in the installation instructions or the head may swivel and cause issues during coupling. That bolt is part 05366 in the instructions.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I've been using the Hijacker 1800 auto slide hitch for my 38' 5er for a year now and I'm very satisfied with it's performance. For the first couple of months of use I had a terrible time getting the jaws to lock when reconnecting to my trailer. Once, I tried for an hour and finally called Demco. somehow we got it to lock but I was really not sure what made it work. It continued to give me problems after that. I finally figured out that after backing onto the trailer pin box I would set the parking brake and try to pin the handle without success because I was leaving some back pressure on the jaws against the king pin. I started making sure there was no back or forward pressure on the jaws before setting the parking break...no problem since as long as I am careful about this issue. On level ground I put the truck in neutral and let it move slightly forward or back, whichever way it wants to go. Works nearly every time. My only problem now is accelerating away from a stop it feels like the trailer slips back in the hitch with a big jerk. I've adjusted the bolt in the front of the hitch frame as the instructions indicate (back off 1/2 turn after the bolt touches) but no dice. I've tried several adjustments and it does't change a thing. Studying the hitch I can't see where the slack is. Otherwise, for turns and overall functioning it works perfectly...Thanks DEMCO. 481306

Had this for a year. Works very well. A bit heavy to remove but worth the confidence knowing this hitch is built heavy duty. Also not having my truck damaged is priceless. There is a routine that needs to be followed to lock in side rails. I put magnets on each side with a wrench on a tether so that I just reach down a grab the wrench for each side. Keep in mind, you need to back straight to hook up. Not designed to back in on a angle. That all being said, very pleased with this hitch and the great customer service from etrailer 636621

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty, smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

There really isn't a solution for towing a fifth wheel trailer with your 2016 Toyota Tundra with a 5-1/2 foot bed that allows you to keep the B and W gooseneck hitch. Normally we have to recommend a Sidewinder pin box for the needed clearance but you can't use Sidewinders with Companion hitches. The other solution you have is to replace the gooseneck with fifth wheel rails and use the only sliding fifth wheel hitch we offer that gives the needed clearance to make tight turns, the Demco...

  • Demco 13K HiJacker is Not Sliding Back All the Way
There are a couple of things to check. First make sure the head of the Demco HiJacker # DM8550040 is straight and the trailer is not coupled. Measure the width of the pin box on the trailer. Adjust the capture plates on the hitch head to be 1/8 of an inch wider than the pin box width. Couple up to the trailer push the capture plates against the pin box and finger tighten the two 1/2 inch bolts against the capture plate. Lock the bolts into place by tightening the nuts against the thick...

  • Why Would You Want to Install a Cut Out Fifth Wheel Tailgate on a 2016 Ram 1500
You would not need to replace your tailgate with a cut out tailgate to use the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550040 that you referenced. The purpose of the fifth wheel tailgates that are cut out is to allow people the ability to hitch up their fifth wheel trailers without having to lower their tailgate back up till the pin box is in the truck bed, and then put the tailgate back up before backing all the way up to prevent contact with the trailer. A lot of times fifth wheel towers will either...

For trucks that have beds that are shorter than 6 feet like your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5-1/2 foot bed there's only one slider hitch with enough clearance to allow you to make tight turns. For that you'll want the Demco Hijacker Autoslide part # DM8550040 which will automatically slide 22-1/2 inches back as you make tight turns. Then for a fifth wheel rail kit you'll want the Demco Custom Install kit part # DM8552027-71 which is made specifically for your truck so install time and...

  • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch For 2017 Ram Short Bed Towing Fifth Wheel Toy Hauler
If you can lock the Reese slider fifth wheel hitch in your 2017 Ram truck bed you can use a Sidewinder pin box on your trailer. You cannot use a sliding fifth wheel hitch with a Sidewinder because it creates two pivot points. You will need to know what model and make your pin box is on your trailer to find the suitable Sidewinder replacement. It should be on a tag or sticker. You can then check out the attached link to the Sidewinders we offer. Pin boxes are a bit heavy, but when you...

  • Can Pro Series 15k Slider Hitch be Used with Sidewinder Pin Box
You can use a Sidewinder pin box with a slider hitch but you'll just have to leave the slider hitch slid forward at all times. Ideally you run a stationary hitch as it's less moving parts to create noise and less weight, but a slider hitch can still be used. If you wanted to convert your hitch to a fixed hitch you'd just have to swap to the legs part # RP30727 and you'd be set. The wedge kit you'd then need is the part # 30850 which will give you the best fit between the hitch and the...

  • Best Slider Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Ford F-150 5-1/2 foot Bed
We have one auto slide fifth wheel hitch with enough clearance to allow your 2018 Ford F-150 5-1/2 foot to tow a fifth wheel trailer. For that you'd want the Demco Hijacker 13k part # DM8550040 which can slide 22-1/2 inches back as you make a tight turn. This only fits above bed rails though so for a set of rails confirmed to fit your truck you'd want the part # RP50087-58 which would fit and work well. This is a custom install kit which will minimize drilling and install time over a universal...

  • How to Convert Fixed Curt A16 5th Wheel Hitch to Sliding Hitch
I wish I had better news for you but Sidewinders will only replace specific pin box models, and there are no Sidewinders that will work as replacements for a Atwood 34 pin box so you will need to use a sliding hitch. If your F-150 has a 6-1/2 foot bed but you have the fixed (non-sliding) Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16120 you can convert it to a sliding hitch with just the Curt R16 Round Tube Slider # C16560. Otherwise, if your F-150 has a 5-1/2 foot bed the only option is...

  • Clearance Issues With A 5th Wheel Sliding Hitch On A Short Bed Truck
I am very sorry to hear about the mishap you have encountered. I do have a few solutions that will allow for 5th wheel towing on a short bed truck however, you will need to consider the use of an auto-sliding hitch or sidewinder king pin. I can assure you that you will not run into this problem again with my recommendations in addition to providing a much more cost effective option than the body damage that will occur from contacting the cab of your truck with the trailer. • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch Between Demco, Husky, Curt, and Reese
All four manufacturers, Demco, Husky, Curt, and Reese are great companies that have been in the 5th wheel towing business for a long time. I would have no problem recommending any of them for a towing setup. Since your 1999 Dodge Ram has a 6 foot bed you will need a sliding 5th wheel hitch to give you extra turning clearance for those tight turning situations. The best 5th wheel sliding hitch that we have to offer is from Demco. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch enables...

  • Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Truck with 5-1/2 Foot Bed Length
There's only one slider hitch that can work in a bed length shorter than 6 feet and still provide enough turning clearance and it's not one made by Reese. Instead you'd want the Demco Hijacker Autoslide hitch part # DM8550040 which will automatically slide back and give you 22-1/2 inches of clearance. This would basically be the only sliding hitch that's going to work for your application.

It can slide 22-1/2 inches. For a rail kit you will want to go with the Reese custom fit rail kit part # RP56034-53 as it is a fit for your truck and is compatible with the Demco hitch. • Can a Ford F-150 with a 5-1/2 foot Bed Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer and Have Turning Clearance
For a 5-1/2 foot bed there really is only two options for towing a fifth wheel trailer to allow you the turning clearance you need. But you have to install the rail kit where it's intended to be, right above the center of the rear axle for proper weight distribution. The best way to tow a trailer for you would be with a Sidewinder pin box as they give you 22 inches of additional turning clearance. You will need to remove the pin box of the trailer and replace it with a Sidewinder...

  • Recommendation for Towing a 5th Wheel with a 2013 Ford F-150 Platinum with 6-1/2 Foot Bed
I can help you figure out if your truck will be capable of towing this trailer. First thing I recommend is to look at the sticker on the door jam of your truck and look for the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating). Then you will want to subtract this number from the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight). This will tell you exactly how much towing capacity your model of truck has. You will definitely want to make sure that your vehicle has the capacity to tow the Gross Weight of the trailer you...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Ram 1500 Shortbed Towing Grand Design 230RL
The Grand Design 230RL has a gross weight rating (GVWR) of just under 10,000-lbs. This is right near your Ram Hemi's limit of 10,140-lbs (good for you for taking the time to confirm the truck's capacity!). This is cutting things a little close, especially if you plan on loading the trailer up to its maximum payload rating of 2600-lbs, but you would certainly get by. Your bigger issue for towing any 5th wheel trailer with your truck is its short bed. Slider hitches can work well for beds...
