Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

A slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 22-1/2" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

The Autoslide has a built-in roller-and-guide assembly that allows for smooth, controlled, and automatic movement. As your truck turns, this assembly also turns. When the assembly turns, an arm in the base of the hitch moves down 1 of 2 tracks in the interior of the base. This action causes the head to be pushed down one of the exterior tracks in the base. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the roller-and guide assembly inside the Autoslide forces the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the roller-and-guide assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a 5th-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (22-1/2")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - DM8550040 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Demco single jaw hijacker autoslide fifth wheel trailer hitch with the slider. This is for an above bed mount. Has a 1300 pound capacity. This fifth wheel hitch will mount in your short-bed truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. This is an automatic trailer which will provide clearance that's required for your sharp bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds. There's no more getting in and out of the truck to operate a manual slider.

The head will slide toward the tailgate when you turn and back towards the cab when you straighten out. Does use a roller and guide assembly underneath there that creates a nice smooth and controlled movement. The hitch head will rotate. On a lot of normal fifth wheels, when your king pin is connected there, it will rotate at the king pin. What this does is, it locks the pin box in, and the actual complete hitch head will do the rotating for you. That rotation will create a force that will propel the automatic slider to work.

Basically what happens is, if the trailer is directly behind you, it'll stay in this position closest to the cab. When you go to make a turn and you get to about 10 to 15 degree angle, it will allow that hitch completely to turn and slide all the way back towards the tailgate. The built-in brackets will stabilize your pin box right here, so the king pin won't rotate in the hitch. There's no need for separate capture plates for standard non-cushion pin boxes. These capture plates right here are these bars right here. Basically they have two bolts and nuts on each side.

If you just loosen the nut, and then back out that bolt, you can adjust that in or out. Covers a range of about 12 inches up to 14 inches wide pin boxes, standard pin boxes. Once you get it to where it's up against the pin box, then you just tighten your bolt down and then tighten your nut down to lock it into place. This hitch head dose use a wrap around single piece jaw which provides a nice secure connection. Gives you 360 degree jaw-to-king pin contact. Because of that, it gives you less rattle, more security than the slide bar jaws. In the very front, right here, there's a three quarter-inch thick solid steel locking bar.

This will reinforce the connection of your coupled trailer. This will slide and automatically lock into place when the jaw closes around the king pin. This hitch head is a double pivot hitch head. Eases hook up, helps limited chucking. Pivots front to back, and it will also side to side. This part does come with the side plates. You can see we've installed them here on the side. These slide plates are for above bed mounts. It has the tabs to go into the above bed rails. Offers you three height settings. On the side plates themselves, there's three rows of holes. On the hitch base, there's two rows of holes. Depending how you line it up, it'll give you anywhere from 15 and a quarter inches hitch height, 16 and a half inches, or up to 18 inches hitch height. Hitch height is always measure from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head. You want to adjust so where your trailer is gonna be as level as possible with your tow vehicle. They also use cushioning polyurethane dampeners under the hitch head here. It helps reduce noise, absorb road shock. The handle is a nice spring loaded handle. Has a nice comfort grip on it. Allows for simple coupling. Uses a tethered safety pin right here, pin and clip, it'll keep you from losing the pin and clip. That should secure the handle into the open or the close position. This is made of a sturdy steel construction. Has a nice rust resistant, black powder coat finish over all the parts. This does come, if you look at the front here, will come with this adjustable outrigger bar right here. Basically that is designed to help carry and distribute the hitch and trailer weight when this hitch is at it's full travel distance back towards the tailgate. Also comes with the four pins and clips to connect it to your rails and your vehicle. This is a very simple installation. It requires the base rails and instillation kit, which we do sell separately if you need it. It is compatible with BMW, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above bed base rails. This part is made in the USA. This is designed for use on five and half foot and six foot truck beds. It will fit standard pin boxes, 12 inch up to 14 inches wide. It does require locking plates if you're gonna use them on the following cushion pin boxes made by Glide Ride, MOR/ryde, Trailair or Tri-Glide, and the Fifth Airborne. If you're using any one of those cushion pin boxes, it does require locking plates. We do sell those separately on our website. Gross towing weight capacity on this is 13000 pounds. Has a vertical load limit or pin weight capacity of 3250 pounds. The travel ones does rotate. It'll go back 22 and half inches, front to back. We mention the hitch height settings will be 15 and a quarter, 16 and a half, or 18 inches. Comes with nice set of manuals for both the hitch and side plates. Just to show you how the head works with pin box, or with the king pin, I've got and example. This is what a king pin would look like on your pin box. Basically, all you have to do is pop open the clip, that'll release the handle. It's a spring loaded handle. Just pull it out all the way. It'll open the jaw and lock it in the open position. Then your king pin, when you go to hook up, will just slide right in. Once it slides in far enough, it'll trigger that handle to slide all the way across. Wraps the jaw completely around the king pin and you'll notice that this locking bar in front that locks into plate. Then all you'll have to do is just take your pin, put it right through the hole there, clip it on, and that locks and holds everything into place, just like that. That should do it for the review of the Demco single jaw hijacker autoslide fifth wheel trailer hitch with slider. This is for an above bed mount. It has a 13000 pound weight capacity.

This 5th wheel hitch performs exactly as advertised, automatically extending the trailer rearward whenever making a tight turn with the truck. I can back my short bed Ram 2500 into a 90 degree angle between the truck and the trailer without trailer's nose (Grand Design Reflection 337 RLS) coming too close to the cab. This is why I bought this hitch -- I wasn't interested in having to get out of the truck to manually slide the trailer rearward when maneuvering in tight places. The automatic extending feature of the hitch is the greatest thing since canned beer! 616620

If you have to have a slider this is the one to buy. I’ve now driven with it about 5000 miles..the only down side is that you have to hook and unhook with the truck perfectly straight in line with the trailer. But it does work perfectly as advertised. 517815

The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

Comments

The hitch is indeed heavy. If you have a chain hoist available, using a lifting bracket like part # DM6100
Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket
$46.36
see link would certainly make installing and removing the hitch much easier.

The hitch was easy to install and works perfectly. It's heavy, so moving it out of the truck by myself is not an option like my old hitch (SOLID construction). Packing for shipment was very good, but plan to have a strong friend or a hand truck (as I did). Installation went well with no issues. Prior to purchasing, I had a couple of questions so I called the company. The rep answered all my questions without issue. 584322

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

I have purchased several different products from etrailer. The folks there have been the most helpful, courteous that I believe I have ever dealt with on the internet... I purchased a demco slider 5th wheel hitch in February 2018. It arrived on time in good condition. I installed in a Ford F-350 with factory puck system I had no issues with install. I did watch the videos online and did find them helpful. I purchased this hitch because with the newer Fords as I'm sure some have experienced they sit about 3" higher than the trucks prior 2017. With my existing hitchI couldn't get low enough and the demco it did allow me to go3 '' lower. Even though the camper still runs a little high in the front its still a whole lot better than what it was. So after one year of use it did work well. It was a little bigger than my previous hitch it and is not an easy job to do by yourself without the help of some sort of hoist. All said I am happy with this product and would give it a good recommendation. 607004

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

Ok... The darn thing weighs a ton! but that was outlined in their info... Just want to make that known. It took three of us to put in the base minus the "head". That was work !! As for the unit, it does as advertised. It swivels when turning and moves aft providing plenty of cab clearance. Don't expect to do a 90 degree turn however, but for normal situations it works fine. One thing I'd love to see is an "adjustment" to move (slide) the "head" a little more rearward when connecting. I only have about 6" of clearance with the gate down so I have to be nearly perfectly aligned to make the hookup. Speaking of which, hooking up can be a challenge. The clamps must have some "slack" and not be too tight against the pin box or alignment becomes a real issue. Also, if you aren't aligned with the trailer when disconnecting you'll need to have that same "off alignment" position when reconnecting as the "head" cannot be moved at all by hand. This can make for having to loosen the clamps, make the hook up, straighten the truck with the trailer and then have to re tighten the clamps. All in all, the unit is as expected and does provide movement aft and forward as you turn. Makes parking in that tight spot a bit less nerve racking... As for Customer Support Demco is spot on!! I had a couple of set up issues. One call cleared the misunderstanding on my end and the install went fine after that. On a second call, they also explained how to set up the clamps to better help with the above mentioned issues. But the nature of the design does not allow much leeway. Enjoy!!! 601243

INVOLVED INSTALLATION BUT VERY STURDY. COMES OUT EASY BUT A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO DROP INTO THE RECEIVER HOLES IN EXTREME TEMPERATURES DUE TO DIFFERENTIAL METAL EXPANSION IN MY AREA , NORTHERN NH 473716

THE BEST FUNCTIONAL SHORT BED 5th WHEEL HITCH OUT THERE BUT ALSO THE HEAVIEST AND THE MOST DIFFICULT TO REMOVE AND REINSTALL. I HAD TO TAKE IT TO A GARAGE TO REMOVE IT AND AGAIN TO REINSTALL IT. I JUST LEAVE IT IN THE TRUCK BED NOW RATHER THAN FIGHT WITH IT.

I INSTALLED THE DEMCO HIJACKER AUTOSLIDE FITH WHEEL HITCH IN MY 17 F250 WITH THE FACTORY PREP PACKAGE. THE HITCH FIT PERFECTLY INTO THE FACTORY PUCK SYSTEM. DID NEED A FRIENDS HELP DO TO THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE OPERTION OF THE AUTOSLIDE AND THE FACT THAT I DON'T REALLY HAVE TO WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT THE TRAILER CONTACTING THE CAB OF TRUCK SINCE I HAVE A 6 FOOT BED. THIS IS THE FIRST FIFTH WHEEL HITCH I HAVE EVER USED BUT WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT HAS A TRUCK WITH A SHORT BED. ONLY 4 STARS BECAUSE OF THE LEARNING CURVE OF HITCHING UP AND THE THING IS PRETTY HEAVY. ONCE I LEARNED THAT THE HITCH AND THE TRUCK HAVE TO BE PRETTY STRAIGHT IN LINE DUE TO THE CAPTURE PLATES HITCHING UP HAS BECOME A NONE ISSUE. I DID PURCHASE AN ENGINE HOIST SO THAT I CAN REMOVE THE HITCH FROM THE BED OF MY TRUCK BY MYSELF IF I NEED TO, BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT JUST STAYS MOUNTED. I ALSO LOVE THE FACT THAT IT HAS A HIGHT ADJUSTMENT WHICH ALLOWED IT TO STILL FIT UNDER MY BEDS TONNEAU. OVERALL VERY SATISFIELD WITH PURCHASE 600745

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty, smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

Unit is nice and fits the Ford mounting system. Very heavy unit takes two or more people to mount and unmount 297301

Works great, had a problem with the pin that keeps the hitch open at first. Demco sent me the part and works great

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

Hello, This hitch has been awesome. It works perfectly all the time. My only gripe would be that the head doesn’t fall down automatically. I have to get out of the truck to tilt it down when connecting to my trailer. Other than that, I’m very satisfied with the design and operation of the hitch. Thank You 521792

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

Nice product. Pretty much idiot proof once you get it set up. After that just hook up and go. No worries about crushing your cab when running a short bed. Built well. Heavy duty. Only complaint would be the weight manually getting it in and out. 301924

The Demco slider hitch is an awesome hitch but it does have it's glitches and we are still working those out. But it is so convenient not having to get out of my truck and pull levers to make tight turns. Also, eTrailer has been exceptional with any problems that I have encountered and has gone above and beyond to make sure that I am satisfied with their products. 553103

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

The Demco hitch works okay once it is latched, but it is really hard to get it locked to the pin. The saddle tries to fall forward, making it hard for the pin to hit home. Once while hooking up, it seemed to be latched, but when I pulled forward, the whole trailer landed on the bed sides! Luckily, the pin landed on the base of the hitch, and no damage was done to the puller, even though the trailer made contact with it. It is difficult to hook up because you have to be pretty much exactly straight with the pin box. Sometimes when I start out from a standing stop, it will jerk really hard. I haven't figured out what causes that. I will give this hitch 2 stars because it is so hard to hook up. 465626

Unit is heavy and well built. Install was easy, just bolt on side plates on, drop the base on the adapter plate and pin it, put head assembly on and pin that, that's all there is to it. Looking forward to many years of towing with this unit. 377393

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

After taking out two rear windows over the years, this was the only way to go. It took me a couple of tries to get the right height and I should have mounted the hitch to the rear in its rails. I think that's mostly on me because I am used to assembling things so I must not have been understanding the instructions. Anyway, once mounted it is a thing of beauty. This is the hitch that is built for the factory installed mount in our new Ford Superduty and it fits like a glove. 472960

this unit is great! I have used it several times. All last year including going to Pennsylvania. If I had to rate one fault it would be when we start out from a dead stop it jerks with a noise. Other than that it is great and would not give it up. 365724

I like the fact that I do not have to remember to slide the hitch. I wish I could manually slide so that when I back up my steep drive, I could assure no interference between truck and trailer. Ford mounting works great. 250562

Was very easy to install, insure the mounting brackets are installed right or hitting the cab can happen. Is quite heavy easier if two people install it. Like the operation of and will recommend it to anyone. I pull a 38 ft fifth wheel toyhauler with my F250 diesel. 311715

It maybe a little heavy and difficult to take in and out but worth all you get. I never have to worry about my 5th wheel hitting the side of the cab again. Easy to hook up and has never caused a issue to deal with. 441187

I have found a way to improve hitching up on uneaven ground by increasing the height on the adjustable alignment guides on the sides. I love my hitch and the tec suport I receive when I need help. How do I share a picture?

I had trouble with this hitch at first. I could not get it to close and latch properly when I backed into the king pin. I worked with tech services and ended up replacing the inner pivot parts and I have really not had any issues since. Because I have to have the locking plate for my pin box, you do have to line up the truck just right for it to latch properly, but once you figure that out, it is easy. The auto slide feature works really good. I have a short bed RAM truck and I have completely turned 90 degrees with my trailer attached and it slides back with no issues to miss my cab. I highly recommend this hitch. Also the Demco Tech Services guys are great to work with. 338908

Installed in my 2014 Silverado. This looks to be a very heavy-duty hitch that doesn't require a capture plate. 565372

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel?

  • Can Pro Series 15k Slider Hitch be Used with Sidewinder Pin Box
  • You can use a Sidewinder pin box with a slider hitch but you'll just have to leave the slider hitch slid forward at all times. Ideally you run a stationary hitch as it's less moving parts to create noise and less weight, but a slider hitch can still be used. If you wanted to convert your hitch to a fixed hitch you'd just have to swap to the legs part # RP30727 and you'd be set. The wedge kit you'd then need is the part # 30850 which will give you the best fit between the hitch and the...

  • The Demco 13K with a 22-1/2 inch slide # DM8550040 and # DM8550041, will not work for your application. It would cause issues with the tail gate. The confirmed fit for your truck is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - 18,000 lbs # DM8550034 or the 21K # DM8550035. Either will work well with the Rail adapter for Ram 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package # DM6099 or the Reese 5th Wheel Rail Adapter # RP30154. The weight of the hitch is 273 lbs for the 18K and...

The rails in the kits you have mentioned all have industry standard rails so the Andersen adapter will fit any of them. But out of the options I recommend # RP50082-58 because it is the only one that does not require drilling into the frame to install the brackets. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of this kit for you. The general rule is that if a trailer...

  • Is Demco 21K Recon Compatible with Lippert Turning Point for a 2015 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2' Bed
  • If you have the 13K Demco Autoslider # DM8550040 that installs on industry standard base rails, like part # RP50087-58, then yes, the Demco Recon # DM8550043 will fit in the 5-1/2' bed of your 2015 Ford F-150. As far as compatibility with the Lippert Turning Point pin box goes, since the opening for the Recon hitch head is a little larger than normal 5th wheel hitches I doubt that the universal wedge that comes with the Turning Point will fit correctly. We have had customers say that...

  • Why Would You Want to Install a Cut Out Fifth Wheel Tailgate on a 2016 Ram 1500
  • You would not need to replace your tailgate with a cut out tailgate to use the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550040 that you referenced. The purpose of the fifth wheel tailgates that are cut out is to allow people the ability to hitch up their fifth wheel trailers without having to lower their tailgate back up till the pin box is in the truck bed, and then put the tailgate back up before backing all the way up to prevent contact with the trailer. A lot of times fifth wheel towers will either...

  • Best 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Turning Clearance for a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Short Bed
  • There are a couple of ways you can get increased clearance between the truck cab and the 5th wheel trailer when making tight turns. In your picture it doesn't look like you have a hitch yet so the most cost effective solution is going to be a sliding 5th wheel hitch. I recommend a Demco HiJacker auto-sliding hitch. That way you don't have to get in and out of the truck to operate the sliding mechanism. I assume that your 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 is a short bed but it is the really short...
