Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit a Demco UMS custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately). The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into the receivers in your truck bed, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 UMS receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the receivers and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Demco hijacker autoslide. This is a fifth wheel trailer hitch with automatic slider. Part number is DM8550037.Now, the autoslide from Demco is really designed to take a lot of the headaches out of hauling our fifth wheel campers with a short bed truck like this. Essentially, the older styles of slider, every time you needed to maneuver, parking lots, tighter spaces, you had to get our of your truck, release the handle, slide the head back, and then make sure it was locked back in.In this case, that entire function is going to be completely automatic. When we start to maneuver at slow speeds, there's a rack and pinion system right inside the head. The pin box is going to be captured between these two plates, and as we turn it, it automatically rotates rearward.

That gives us an additional 14 inches of clearance on those tighter turns, which really can come in handy. It's basically about two inches longer than a lot of them that you see out there on the market, and quite a bit longer than some of the others that are out there on the market. Now, when we straighten back out, the rack and pinon pushes it's head right back up here in the towing position. So no longer are we going to have to get out of the vehicle and get it adjusted properly just so we can get through a gas station or parking lot. Now, during operation, during those maneuvers, as our head slides back, it's going to rotate all the way out to 90 degrees. That's really going to maximize the distance we have between our truck and camper. Now, to make the connection from our camper to our autoslide, we want to pull the pin and clip which is provided.

You can see it's also attached to help prevent us losing it.We're going to pull that handle open. You see that's going to open up our jaws. We've got a little release there. As our fifth wheel comes in, it's going to hit that, it's going to give us that full lock around, automatically locking behind it at that point. Just have to put our pin back in to keep everything secured. Now, as our head comes in, this is the release that it's going to hit.

Just going to do it manually os you can see it. You can see the other side of our jaw's going to come all the way around. You see that's 360 degrees of contact there. That's going to help to ensure that we don't have the looseness, either front to back or side to side. By spreading that energy out over a greater area, we're not going to have that deformation that we're used to when we had just a solid bar behind our king pin. Now, whether you're trying to connect your trailer to your truck or get them separated, the autoslide is going to pivot both side to side and front to back.

With older fifth wheel hitches that didn't have that option, sometimes if you're trying to make that connection on uneven ground, just wouldn't work out for you. So you had to reposition everything. In this case with it tilting side to side and front to back, regardless of the angle of our trailer, should be able to get a good solid connection each and every time. Now, located inside of the head to help us enjoy the experience with the autoslide much better, we have polyurethane bushings. Now, those are going to help to keep things quiet, and it's also going to reduce the amount of force we feel coming in through our truck from our trailer. But besides this, there's something I really like about this. If you've hauled with fifth wheels before, you felt it, but when you take off or when you slow down, there's almost like a chucking motion, almost like your truck goes, then the trailer. Truck goes, then the trailer. With these bushings in place, it's really going to help to reduce or even eliminate that. So as you're taking off or slowing down, it's going to feel much more controlled. Now, something I really like about this kit and the underbed fashion is that when we're done with our autoslide, we don't always want to keep it in the back of the truck. We want to free this room up so we can get additional items in.Once we release the handles on each side, we can remove our autoslide, and our bed is nice and flat and open. We're not going to have the rails that run all the way across that generally hang up on things and just get in the way. Now, also because we want this to adapt from different campers and different trailers, we have three adjustable height settings. We're able to go from the bed of our truck to the top of our head, either 15.5 inches, 16 and three quarter inches, by moving it up just a little bit, or all the way up to 18 and a quarter. So regardless of the height of your bed rails, you should have more than enough room for this to work with many camper and truck combos.Another thing I like about the autoslide, we've got it in the middle position right now. So this would come up a couple of inches. But you see even with the tonneau cover installed, we'd be able to easily fold this back and lock it to keep everything nice and safe and secure. Now, the autoslide's going to feature a nice, heavy duty black powder coat construction. You see it's got a little bit of a hammered finish to it. It gives it a unique look, and it's also something we won't have to worry about getting corrosion for a very long time to come. Here on the base, you can see they've added some diamond plate just to give it a nice, unique look, going along with that painted finish or that black powder coat finish. Now, as far as weight capacities on the autoslide go, we've got a maximum vertical load limiter. The most pin weight we can put down here is 5250 pounds. Overall it's going to give us a 21000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's going to be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you have loaded up in it. Of course you don't want to exceed the capacity of your pickup, so check your owner's manual to see what that is. Use whichever of those numbers is the lowest. The cushion release handle that you see here is easily pulled in and out to get our fifth wheel in the position that we want. Once everything is secured, we've got our pin that's provided that we can slide through, get connected on the bottom. You'll also see we've got a nice, large hole here. That's where our pin generally lives, but if you'd like to lock it so you can secure your trailer to your truck, you can easily slide in a quarter inch shackle lock, get that secured. You won't have to worry about anything disappearing. Now, as far as ease of use, I think overall all the benefits we get out of the autoslide and not having to get out of the truck over and over again, any time we're trying to do maneuvering is really handy. Also our handle's pretty easy to access. I'm about 6 foot tall. This is a 2500HD, so has taller bed sides on it. I'm able to reach in, get to our release pin here, pull our handle out, get it engaged and ready to back up. So I think with that being the case, you'll find in a lot of instances, you'll be able to operate this from the outside of the vehicle rather than having to climb up in the bed.Just to make sure this is going to be a good fit for your application, the autoslide has been designed for use on six and a half foot truck beds, and it's going to fit standard pin boxes between 12 and 14 inches wide. You can use it on some of the aftermarket pin boxes as well. You might just have to pick up a set of locking plates.Once we have our fifth wheel hooked up to the autoslide, of course you're going to start with these all the way out. Then we want to bring these in evenly to where they meet both sides of that pin box, put a little pressure on them and run our jam nuts down. So once we've set this for one pin box, we'll never have to worry about adjusting it each and every time.Something else I like, and I think you will too, about the autoslide is the way it actually connects to the bed of the truck. As we said, it uses that underbed kit. So we've got the notches that go down and the plugs that go down and rotate. But releasing it from the bed is easy. So you've got our clip. We're going to take our pin, and we just need to rotate our locking handles. It's going to make it much easier that the pins that used to slide in underneath the fifth wheel and then trying to squeeze your hand in there and get the pin in place. Then once we have it back in, we'll just rotate those into the locked position, drop our pin back through, and resecure it withy our clip.Another completed look at the Demco hijacker. Part number DM8550037.

Hitch looks great and functions great as well. Installation could’ve been smoother due to the installation instruction measurements being slightly off. Look at finding hole caps that are 3” instead of two and drilling the larger hole. 794486

Hitch works great. Had some issues using it when I first got it with putting the pin to lock down the handle but its worked much better lately. The hitch is heavy so I leave it in the back of the truck. Wish I could remove it so it doesn't get weathered. 581366

This hitch has been used daily since i purchased it. I deliver fifth wheel travel trailers all over the country. This hitch has worked flawlessly from day one. This hitch is one of the only products that I've ever bought that is exactly what it was described to be. Im not one to do reviews, so the fact that im doing this one , in itself, says a lot about the quality of your product. The design and looks are much better than any other hitch ive seen. It just looks better in the truck bed than others do. 250140

Very happy with the product. The only draw back is the weight. Can't be loaded/unloaded by one person. A good cross-sell opportunity is to offer a tool for removal. When I first got it, it didn't fit the truck. Support team was helpful and responsive. It seemed to be due to the bed spray. I was able to get it to mount perfectly by loosening a bolt under the truck, and then smoothing the edges of the locks in the rails. 352378

Unit is heavy and well built. Install was easy, just bolt on side plates on, drop the base on the adapter plate and pin it, put head assembly on and pin that, that's all there is to it. Looking forward to many years of towing with this unit. 377393

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

Comments
The hitch is indeed heavy. If you have a chain hoist available, using a lifting bracket like part # DM6100
Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket
$80.53
see link would certainly make installing and removing the hitch much easier.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I've been using the Hijacker 1800 auto slide hitch for my 38' 5er for a year now and I'm very satisfied with it's performance. For the first couple of months of use I had a terrible time getting the jaws to lock when reconnecting to my trailer. Once, I tried for an hour and finally called Demco. somehow we got it to lock but I was really not sure what made it work. It continued to give me problems after that. I finally figured out that after backing onto the trailer pin box I would set the parking brake and try to pin the handle without success because I was leaving some back pressure on the jaws against the king pin. I started making sure there was no back or forward pressure on the jaws before setting the parking break...no problem since as long as I am careful about this issue. On level ground I put the truck in neutral and let it move slightly forward or back, whichever way it wants to go. Works nearly every time. My only problem now is accelerating away from a stop it feels like the trailer slips back in the hitch with a big jerk. I've adjusted the bolt in the front of the hitch frame as the instructions indicate (back off 1/2 turn after the bolt touches) but no dice. I've tried several adjustments and it does't change a thing. Studying the hitch I can't see where the slack is. Otherwise, for turns and overall functioning it works perfectly...Thanks DEMCO. 481306

Nice product. Pretty much idiot proof once you get it set up. After that just hook up and go. No worries about crushing your cab when running a short bed. Built well. Heavy duty. Only complaint would be the weight manually getting it in and out. 301924

I would not buy this hitch again because -- 1. It takes up to much space in the truck bed 2. It is over built thus weighs to much 3. It is very hard to hook up because the hitch swivels when unhooking, thus making the hooking up very difficult lining up on an angle. 4. With this hitch I cannot lock out the swivel feature. My old hitch I could lock it out I would buy from E Trailer again there sales people are great and delivered time was great. The hitch choice was my mistake not E Trailer's 548218

Comments
This demco hitch part DM8550034 is a completely gear driven hitch. Whichever angle you uncouple at is the same position the head will stay in until it is coupled back up. It is a good idea to couple up at as straight of an angle as possible. If there is ever a situation where you have to uncouple at an angle you can physically turn the head back to a straight position by taking the head off the hitch and putting a straight bar through the assembly for some leverage. The head should not be swiveling during coupling unless the main bolt is loose. The bolt that holds the gear assembly together has to be torqued to the specific foot lbs in the installation instructions or the head may swivel and cause issues during coupling. That bolt is part 05366 in the instructions.

  • Best 5th Wheel Towing Setup for a 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD
Since you have a short bed (6-1/2') on your 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD, you will need a rolling hitch or more commonly referred to as a sliding 5th wheel hitch for your 397 Heartland Edge Toy Hauler to make tight turns. The general rule of thumb is that if you're towing a 5th wheel trailer with a truck that has a bed shorter than 8' then you will need a sliding hitch to gain clearance between the trailer and the cab of your vehicle while turning to prevent them from contacting one another,...

You can use the Demco HiJacker # DM8550035 but in order for it to fit the factory puck system in your 2017 GMC Sierra 3500 with the 6-1/2 foot bed you would also need adapter # DM6194. The adapter is also rated for 21,000 pounds. There isn't a HiJacker as of 6/22/2017 that fits directly in the puck system on the short bed GMC and Chevy trucks with the factory prep package but it can be done provided you use the adapter.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ram 3500
We do have a large selection of great fifth wheel hitches that will work well on your 2018 Ram 3500 to tow your DRV Mobile Suite trailer. If your Ram does not have the factory rail kit and has a 6-1/2 foot bed, I recommend a sliding hitch like the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550037. This is an excellent hitch that will actually slide automatically as you drive to give you 14 inches of additional clearance for tight turns with your short bed truck. It has a 21,000 pound gross towing...

For your 2016 Ford F-250 and specific application I highly recommend the BAK Revolver X4 Hard Tonneau Cover # BAK79310. This is an excellent cover that features the durable aluminum construction of a standard hard cover but with the versatility of a soft vinyl unit with its rolling design. This will allow you to maintain a view out of the rear cab window when it's rolled up for towing as opposed to a folding model that would completely obstruct your view when folded up. The cover's...

The head of the Hijacker hitches by Demco like part # DM8550037 are pretty easy to remove. The head weighs right at 65 lbs which will make removing the setup much more manageable.

If you are installing the Demco Under Bed Rails, # DM8551005, for the 2011 Ram 2500 truck, then the B&W Under Bed Gooseneck Hitch, like # BWGNRK1313, will have to be remove to allow for the installation for the Demco Hijacker 5th Wheel hitch. The gooseneck hitch will interfere with the 5th wheel rails installation. The gooseneck mounting braces might cover the frame area where the 5th wheel brackets will need to be installed. Removal of the gooseneck hitch is necessary.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Tonneau Cover Recommendation for 2017 Ram 3500 with Short Bed
For your 2017 Ram 3500 6-1/2 Foot Bed without Factory Rail Kit you'll need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. My favorite slider hitches are the ones that automatically slide as you make tight turns as that saves you the hassle of getting out and activating the slider every time it's needed. For that I would recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550037 and the install rail kit part # DM8551006. This is an underbed rail kit too which means when...

You can mount this hitch with the Underbed Rail and Installation Kit # DM8551005, which is a confirmed fit for your truck and has underbed rails so you can remove the hitch at any time and still have full access to your truck's bed. • Does Demco Hijacker Auto Slide Fifth Wheel Hitch Make Backing Trailer Up More Difficult
It would actually be easier to back a trailer up with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel hitch # DM8550037 than a standard sliding fifth wheel hitch because you wouldn't have to get out and operate the slider when you came to a tight turn. The pivot point wouldn't make the way the trailer reacts much different. It wouldn't cause it to be unpredictable while backing.

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2013 Ram 3500 Diesel Short Bed Towing Sandpiper 379
5th wheel towing is possible with short-bed trucks but it is certainly easier with a long bed. Short bed trucks will require either a sliding type hitch or a fixed hitch along with a Sidewinder replacement pin box on the trailer in order for you to have enough turning clearance to avoid trailer-to-cab contact. Long bed trucks avoid this issue completely; they can use standard fixed hitches and a new Sidewinder pin box is not required. You can refer to the linked articles for more on this. If...

The great thing about the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550037 is that it slides automatically back 14 inches as you make tight turns. Because of that it would allow your 2016 Ram to make tight turns without interference, BUT since you have the factory rail kit you would want the # DM8550035 instead with the adapter part # DM6099. Both of these combined is 391 lbs but it is designed to be taken apart in sections to allow for an easier removal.

If you check out the review video I attached below you'll see a camera angle that captures how and when it slides.
