Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - DM8550034 Review

Today we're going to review part number DM8550034. This is the Demco 18,000 Pound Hijacker Autoslide Above Bed Mount 5th Wheel Hitch. Now this hijacker autoslide is an automatic sliding hitch and it's designed for short bed trucks with a 6-1/2 foot bed to give you additional clearance between your truck's cab and the trailer during turning maneuvers and it also eliminates the need to get in and out of your truck to pull a pin and manually slide the hitch. This hitch will slide by using the rack and pinion here technology that's in the base of this hitch. It gives you up to about 14 inches of fore and aft travel to help you get in and out of those tight spots. I'm going to try to show you how this rotates.

It actually needs the weight of a pin box on here to help move it, but basically what it would do, as you can see, as you'd go it will rotate and slide pretty much all the way. Then when you go back, when you get on the highway, it will straighten out automatically just like that. Now normally, a 5th wheel trailer will turn or pivot in the jaw here where the king pin will be connected to the hitch head. This autoslide hitch has an integrated locking system right here, these capture plates. These are in the head and this will lock your pin box in place on the hitch head, eliminating the need for any additional locking wedges with a standard pin box. Instead, the head will pivot with the pin box locked in place and will move automatically closer to the tailgate, creating much more space in between the truck cab and the trailer on sharp turns. Now the autoslide hitch is designed to work with standard trailer pin boxes between 12 inches minimum width to 14 inches maximum width.

These capture plates right here on the top of the head are going to be adjusted to the width of the trailer pin box, in order for this automatic slide mechanism to operate and function properly. Basically, it's pretty simple. With the trailer hooked up in here and the pin box right here, the king pin in the jaw, you just push these capture plates right here. You can see how they move. One on each side.

Once your pin box is on here and you just push this up against your pin box. Then what you do is you take these bolts and the finger tighten the bolt all the way down just like that and that will hold it into place and then just run the jam nut all the way up in here to hold that down. Once you're done with both of them, it will hold that in place and keep your pin box locked on the hitch head. Now with this hitch is installed and any trucks that have a 5-1/2 foot or 6 foot bed, there is no guarantee that you can do a full 90 degree turn with this autoslide hitch. Now the autoslide 5th wheel hitch was designed for use with the RV style 5th wheel trailers that have an industry standard 2 inch diameter king pin. This has an 18,000 pound towing capacity.

It has a lower profile design with easy access for routine maintenance. One of the easiest maintenance things you can do is these jaw pins right here, you can go underneath and pull the snap ring and both of these pins you can pop out, grease them up, put them back in, put the snap rings on. It makes greasing the head really easy. Now this hitch is a lighter weight for easier hitch installation and removal. What even makes it easy is there's a pin right underneath here. A long pin that slides across on this head, that you just pop the clip off, slide the long pin off. You can actually lift the head off by yourself and it makes it lighter on the base if you need to remove that out of your truck bed. Now this head is a double pivot head. You can see, it does move front to back and it will move side to side. Right in here, it has the wrap around jaw with a locking bar in front. Gives you a smoother, safer, more secure ride. Now this autoslide 5th wheel hitch will come assembled from the factory to help make installation easier and quicker. The only prep work you need to do is to bolt these side adapter plates to the hitch itself and you want to bolt those in the correct hitch height position. Now these adapters are what will connect this hitch to your above bed rails. Now they do offer on these plates. You'll see there's 3 rows of holes and then on your hitch there's 2 rows of holes. Depending how you bolt that up, the instructions will show you how. It will give you 3 different vertical height adjustments to help you level your truck and trailer for your application. The lowest hitch height adjustment would be 16-1/2 inches, the middle adjustment would be 17-3/4 inches, and the highest would be 19-1/4 inches, and the hitch height is measured from your truck bed to the top of your hitch head. Now the base rails and installation kits that this would install in for your vehicle are sold separately on our website. We recommend to use our fit guide, put in your year and model of vehicle and it will show you what part numbers you need. Now another thing I want to show you is on the front here. We got this installed. There's an out rigger bar which is in the front of the hitch and this is designed to help carry and distribute the hitch and the trailer weight when this hitch is at its full travel distance. This bar is adjusted after your hitch is installed in its correct height in the truck bed. This part also comes with the pins and clip that are used to attach your adapter plates to your rails. This product is made in the USA with American steel. I wanted to show you here, let's see if we can turn this a little bit. I want to show you the hitch head and how that would operate. Now it's in the closed position. To open it, you just take your pin and clip out and then with your handle, if you pull it all the way out, it will lock into the open position. That means you're ready to hook up. Just to give you an idea of how it hooks up, I got an example here that we use in our demonstrations of an actual . This is a king pin 2 inch industry standard size king pin that would be on your pin box. When you back up, this would slide into the hitch head just like this. Once it does that, you can see that the jaw and the locking bar will slide across and lock it into position. Then just put your pin and clip in there before you're ready to go. Now you're ready to tow. Then when you're done, you just do the opposite, take your pin and clip out, pull this open and you're pin box will slide right out. That's should do it for the review on part number DM8550034. The Demco 18,000 Pound Hijacker Autoslide Above Bed Mount 5th Wheel Hitch.

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

Unit is heavy and well built. Install was easy, just bolt on side plates on, drop the base on the adapter plate and pin it, put head assembly on and pin that, that's all there is to it. Looking forward to many years of towing with this unit. 377393

Was very easy to install, insure the mounting brackets are installed right or hitting the cab can happen. Is quite heavy easier if two people install it. Like the operation of and will recommend it to anyone. I pull a 38 ft fifth wheel toyhauler with my F250 diesel. 311715

I've been using the Hijacker 1800 auto slide hitch for my 38' 5er for a year now and I'm very satisfied with it's performance. For the first couple of months of use I had a terrible time getting the jaws to lock when reconnecting to my trailer. Once, I tried for an hour and finally called Demco. somehow we got it to lock but I was really not sure what made it work. It continued to give me problems after that. I finally figured out that after backing onto the trailer pin box I would set the parking brake and try to pin the handle without success because I was leaving some back pressure on the jaws against the king pin. I started making sure there was no back or forward pressure on the jaws before setting the parking break...no problem since as long as I am careful about this issue. On level ground I put the truck in neutral and let it move slightly forward or back, whichever way it wants to go. Works nearly every time. My only problem now is accelerating away from a stop it feels like the trailer slips back in the hitch with a big jerk. I've adjusted the bolt in the front of the hitch frame as the instructions indicate (back off 1/2 turn after the bolt touches) but no dice. I've tried several adjustments and it does't change a thing. Studying the hitch I can't see where the slack is. Otherwise, for turns and overall functioning it works perfectly...Thanks DEMCO. 481306

Works very well. Very sturdy heavy duty construction. A friend bought the Super Glide slider and its no where near as sturdy. Not having to use a king pin plate is also a bonus. The only down side, as with all auto sliders, is you have to be pretty much straight to hook up. I would recommend this hitch to anyone looking for an auto slider. 461550

I think any slider hitch gives you the assurance you are not ever going to hit your truck cab with your 5th wheel trailer. But what puts the Demco Autoslide Hitch way above the other, is that you do not need a "Key" or adapter on your 5th wheel trailer to make it work. So what's the big deal? Well if you need to tow a friends 5th wheel you can. No need for the "key" that fits behind the trailer pin. These "keys" are not universal so the "key" on your trailer may not fit his. So I can haul any 5th with out the worry of a "Key" and have the advantage of a Autoslide hitch. And the flip side is; anyone with a 5th wheel hitch can haul my trailer with out adapters. Whether its an emergency or not it is nice to know I can haul any 5th and my trailer can be towed by any other person with a 5th wheel hitch. Not so with the other manufacture. You got to have the right adapter "key" for your particular pin box. Love my Demco Autoslide hitch. Once you explain this difference to people there is only one choice. Two of my friends now have the superior Demco Hijacker Autoslide Hitch. 396798

I spent a lot of time researching sliding 5th wheel hitches. I could not be happier with my final decision. It slides smoothly and everyone that sits in the back of the truck and watches the magic as I take corners with it think it is amazing. I can even carry 2 Kayaks on top of truck and jackknife 90 and still have a little room. I highly recommend this hitch for anyone with a short bed truck. Made in the USA! 319555

I would not buy this hitch again because -- 1. It takes up to much space in the truck bed 2. It is over built thus weighs to much 3. It is very hard to hook up because the hitch swivels when unhooking, thus making the hooking up very difficult lining up on an angle. 4. With this hitch I cannot lock out the swivel feature. My old hitch I could lock it out I would buy from E Trailer again there sales people are great and delivered time was great. The hitch choice was my mistake not E Trailer's 548218

Comments

This demco hitch part DM8550034 is a completely gear driven hitch. Whichever angle you uncouple at is the same position the head will stay in until it is coupled back up. It is a good idea to couple up at as straight of an angle as possible. If there is ever a situation where you have to uncouple at an angle you can physically turn the head back to a straight position by taking the head off the hitch and putting a straight bar through the assembly for some leverage. The head should not be swiveling during coupling unless the main bolt is loose. The bolt that holds the gear assembly together has to be torqued to the specific foot lbs in the installation instructions or the head may swivel and cause issues during coupling. That bolt is part 05366 in the instructions.

I have had this hitch now for one year. I have a 2017 Ram 3500 and pull a 2017 Grand Design 377MBS fifth wheel. Pros: * Demco's customer service * smooth ride * multi hight position helped prevent nose high which is typical on a Ram * auto slide Cons: * Very heavy and eats up most of my 6.5 foot bed * can't do 90 degree turn (or you end up with spending $$$ on a new rear window . . . don't ask) * have to be close to head on and level to hitch or unhitch <-- biggest complaint Would I buy it again? I am not sure. I think I would stick with Demco as their customer service is top notch, just not sure I would get the auto slider or look at the new Recon. Either way I would buy again from e-trailer. 472867

I am very happy with this choice I made for my hitch. Being new to the 5th wheel experience this Autoslide took alot of stress out of the switch from a travel trailer. I know there would have been that time I would have forget to release the lock on a standard hitch in my first couple times out. It was a very easy setup. The extra money out was worth preventing that one time expensive mistake. 566876

We absolutely love our Demco Hijacker auto-slider hitch. We have a 6.5 ft bed, and a rather large 5th-wheel. I never have to give a single thought to unlocking the hitch and re-locking it before / after maneuvering. Everyone who sees it in action has that "jaw drop" reaction to it. Hooking up is very easy, and the engagement is VERY positive - you cannot miss getting it locked in place. Under tow, it is much more quiet than the previous one we used (loaner), and there is zero "lurching" or "chucking" as we experienced with the previous unit. My only (minor) complaint is that I wish it wasn't quite so heavy, but it IS built like a tank. I probably could have gone with a lighter-duty unit for my specific 5th-wheel, but didn't want to have to replace the hitch if I ever upgraded to a heavier unit. As for etrailer: everything I've purchased from them has shipped quickly, arrived (undamaged) on time, and has been of excellent quality. Thanks! 560245

Gave a 4 star rating vs 5 because this is a very heavy unit even when broken down. Expect to require someone to help install/remove from your truck or an overhead hoist. With that being said has worked great for past year. Enjoy not worrying about turning radius I’m able to turn right at 90 degrees with this in my ‘17 ram short bed. Very quite there is one small chuck when taking off from standstill but other than that very quit. 549757

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty, smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

I love this 5th wheel. I installed it in my 2007 Toyota Tundra with above bed rail system had no problem with the installation. I had a manual slide before and I always had a problem getting it to release and I would have to have my wife move the truck back & forth so I could get it to release and go through it again at the campground or at tight turns. Now none of that. I can hook up by myself no problem on tight turns. The hitch is heavy duty and well made works great! I am well Please with this purchase. 603636

Installed DEMCO DM8550034 in a 2001 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab Short-bed. This hitch takes all of the worry out of backing and turning your fifth wheel trailer. I love this hitch! Excellent product that I highly recommend! 599447

Very well built and engineered. Great customer Sevice from etrailer and demco. If you plan to remove the fifth wheel from the truck demco makes a lifting pin. A gantry Crain is helpful too. This thing is heavy duty, good for a lifetime! I also purchased the rail adapter. Thumbs up for that also. Be aware that this setup is tall. My 2018 fwd Ram has a tall bed height combined with the fifth wheel height could make a lower trailer pin height a problem with tailgate clearance and trailer angle. I’m very happy with this setup. 598185

The torque value for Ram is 75 ft lbs. The instructions are hard to figure that out cause the bolt looks like a grade 10. Which is incorrect they are grade 5. Easy install. Looks good in my truck. 580131

great hitch, only complaint is the weight of the hitch when I removed it for winter. A hoist is required to lift the hitch out of the truck. Hook up was easy. Love the sliding point, made access to a couple of narrow turns possible. 477982

Review from a similar Demco Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel

The hitch was easy to install and works perfectly. It's heavy, so moving it out of the truck by myself is not an option like my old hitch (SOLID construction). Packing for shipment was very good, but plan to have a strong friend or a hand truck (as I did). Installation went well with no issues. Prior to purchasing, I had a couple of questions so I called the company. The rep answered all my questions without issue. 584322

Great product! We were novice 5th wheel users and it didn't take us long to feel comfortable with this hitch. My 15 yo son and I had it installed in 20 minutes and we haven't looked back. We love the peace of mind knowing the slide hitch will keep the front of our trailer out of our truck cab. We would recommend this to everyone! 587622

Hitch works perfectly. The auto slide is awesome! Very well built. Very heavy. Not something you want to be taking in and out of your bed all the time. My only complaint is that you have to be pretty straight when you hook or unhook the camper. 567589

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2018 Ram 2500 Short Bed Pickup with Factory Prep
  • In your short-bed Ram 3500 that has the factory rail kit the available slider-type 5th wheel hitches offer slider travel that ranges from 8- to 14-inches. All are shown on the linked page. Single-jaw designs often have less rattle and they also typically have fewer parts, which can be considered advantages. But certain dual jaw hitches can still be considered superior to certain single-jaw types. B&W makes superb products like their Companion 5th wheel slider # BWRVK3670 which will...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch For Short Bed Truck With Rails Installed
  • The rails in your 2005 Ford F-250 with 6-3/4 foot bed are standard rails compatible with most hitches. Because you have a short bed, you will need a sliding hitch. There are a few options for you, but I'll give you a recommendation for an auto-slide and a manual sliding hitch. The reason you will need a sliding hitch is because the clearance between your truck and trailer is limited due to the short box, so you want to make sure you have the ability to turn in tight spaces without having...

  • Does Truck with 6-1/2 ft bed Have to Use Slider Hitch for Turning Clearance with Fifth Wheel Hitch
  • You will have to go with a sliding hitch to allow the trailer to make tight turns. For a trailer 8 feet wide the only bed length that's going to allow 90 degree turns without a slider is a stationary hitch. That being said you have two options. If you really want to use a stationary hitch like the part # RP30033 you can replace the pin box on your trailer with a Sidewinder and that will allow the clearance. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin...

  • 5th Wheel Towing Capacity and Hitch Recommendations for a 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD Short Bed
  • The dry hitch weight, also called tongue weight for travel trailers or pin weight for 5th wheel trailers, is the amount of weight pushing down on the trailer hitch. Dry means the trailer is empty; no cargo, water, propane, just the trailer by itself. So the dry weight is less important than the actual hitch/tongue/pin weight when the trailer is loaded and ready to tow. Based on the figures you have provided the trailer has a hitch weight that is 21 percent of the gross trailer weight...

  • Pullrite Superglide or Demco Hijacker Comparison
  • The advantage the Pullrite Superglide would have over the Reese hitch # RP30083 is that you would never have to get out of your truck to activate the slider. We don't sell Pullrite hitches, but that would be a huge selling point for me to pick it over the Titan. However, I do have an additional option for you to consider that we DO offer that does automatically slide like the Pullrite. I really like the Demco Hijack part # DM8550034. This hitch would work similarly to the Pullrite,...

It does require the adapter part # DM6099 to be used like you referenced. The hitch as a total is pretty heavy at 273 lbs but it can be taken apart to make it easier. The head assembly of the hitch is held on with one large pin. The other option is a hitch mounted crane. The MaxxTow crane part # MT70238 could take it out as one assembly.

  • Do I Have to Have a Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch in a Short Bed Truck
  • You do not have to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch in a short bed truck. In many cases, truck beds shorter than 8 ft do not have enough clearance between the trailer and truck to execute sharp turns. This is why sliding hitches were invented.
