Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.


Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.


Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.


In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.


When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.


A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.


Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.


Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.


Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit in the underbed rails of your Ford Super Duty factory fifth-wheel towing prep package. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.


The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your OEM tow package receivers, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 puck receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the pucks and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.


Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.


(A+B) - C = Clearance


A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)


For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.


Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Today we're going to review part number DM8550024. This is the Demco 18,000 Pound Highjacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch for the Ford OEM Towing Prep Package. Now this highjacker autoslide is an automatic sliding 5th wheel hitch. This one is designed for the Ford trucks with the factory towing prep package to give you additional clearance between the truck's cab and your trailer during your turning maneuvers. It eliminates the need for you to get in and out of your truck, having to pull a pin, and then manually slide the hitch back or forth. This will automatically slide when it uses the rack and pinion gear technology right here at the base of the hitch.

It'll give you about 14 inches of travel fore and aft to help get in and out of those tight spots. Now normally when you hook a 5th wheel trailer up to your hitch head, it slides and locks into place and it's designed for your pin box to turn on the hitch head and the king pin rotate in the jaw. This one actually would be the opposite. What it does is this autoslide has this integrated locking system right here and it will lock the head to this- Or lock your pin box to the head, which eliminates the need for any additional locking wedges on a standard pin box. Instead, what will happen is this hitch head on this autoslide will totally pivot with the pin box, locked into place. It will move automatically closer to the tailgate which create a much more space between your truck cab and your trailer on the sharp turns. Basically, what you would do- These are the capture plates that you would do.

I'm going to get into that a little later to show you how that hooks up. Once your box is in here, you lock it into place with the capture plate. What will happen is, then when you go to make your turns, you'll see that the hitch head will do the pivoting. Your pin box will still stay there. Your pin box is not going to pivot.

It's going to stay locked in and the hitch head will do all the rotation. As you can see, as you turn. It will turn both ways just like this, you can see. Now the nice thing about it is .. Let's get back to- You'll notice when it gets into this position where the trailer would be directly behind you like if you're towing it, it won't allow this to go back because there's a guide plate that will stop that rack and pinion gear from going straight back.

You have to go at least a 10 to 15 degree turn and then it will start rotating and sliding for you. Once you get into the towing position like that, you can't go directly back. It will stay locked, closer to the cab. Now the autoslide hitch is designed to work with standard trailer pin boxes between 12 inches minimum width up to 14 inch maximum width. These capture plates, they will be adjusted to the width of the trailer pin box, in order for this automatic slide mechanism to operate properly. Basically with your pin box slid in, your trailer will hook up. What you would do is push these capture plates right here. One on this side and one on this side. You'll push these up against the pin box when it's installed. Once it's up against there, you'll finger tighten these 2 half inch bolts up against the capture bar here just like that and then run the jam nut up to lock it into place. Do the same on this one and do the same on this side. With these pushed in, it will hold that pin box from rotating on the head itself. Now one note, if this hitch is installed in any trucks that have a 5-1/2 foot or a 6 foot bed, there's no guarantee that a full 90 degree turn can be made with this autoslide hitch. Now this autoslide hitch is designed for use with RV style 5th wheel trailers that use an industry standard 2 inch diameter king pin. It has an 18,000 pound towing capacity. It is a lower profile design and it has easy access for routine maintenance. One of the easiest ones is these pins right here for the jaw and the head itself. You can actually pop off a snap ring, pull these pins out, grease them up, put them back in there, and put the snap ring on. Very easy to maintain those. It is a lighter weight for easier hitch installation and removal. Another nice feature is it has a long pin with a clip on it. Pull the pin out, which is about this long, and that'll unlock your head from the cradle and you can lift your head off and then that will makes the base slide here that you can remove if you're not going to be towing with it. The head itself is a double pivot head. You can see it goes front to back and it will go side to side. It does use a wrap around jaw, which will totally wrap around the king pin itself. It has a locking bar in front for smoother, safer, more secure ride. Now this autoslide hitch will come all assembled from the factory. Helps makes the installation really easy and quick. The only prep work you have to do is bolt these side plates that come with it to the hitch and you want to bolt those in the correct hitch height position for your application. Basically, these side plates, these are what will connect the hitch to the Ford OEM Below Bed Rails. Basically, what you would do here is these side plates, you can see I've already put them on here, but what you'll need to do is it has 2 rows of holes on the plates and 2 rows of holes on the base of the hitch. You just want to put them in the correct location to get you your correct vertical hitch height. Your hitch height is measured from the top of your truck bed to the top of the hitch head. This one, the side plates will give you 3 options. It has a low hitch height which is 15-1/2 inches, a middle which is 16-3/4, and the highest is 18-1/4. You want to put it at the correct one that'll make your truck and trailer level. Now on the side plates, the way they- Once they're installed, the way you would install the whole assembly into your truck bed, what you would do is you'll see these pins and clips right here, pull the clip out, pull the pin out, same way up here, you do the same on the other side and then you'll notice these handles, you'll rotate out 90 degrees. When you do that, it rotates those tabs out 90 degrees. With it like that and the same over here, you'll be able to drop it into the pucks that are in the Ford Prep Package, the underbed rails. Once they drop in, just push it back 90 degrees and that rotates those tabs to lock them into place, same on the other side. Once they're in place, drop your pin and clip back in. Same way up here. Once you do that, that will keep those handles from opening. It keeps it locked into place. One other thing I want to show you, on the front of this is a outrigger 00:06:29 bar. You can see right here with the long bolts on it. What that is, that's designed to help carrying distribute the hitch and the trailer weight when the hitch is at its full travel distance. Basically, when it's adjusted correctly, it will help eliminate any movement of the hitch in the truck bed. You'll want to adjust that outrigger bar after your hitch is installed on its correct height in the truck bed and then you'll just tighten that down. Now this hitch is made in the USA using American steel. I just want to give you a few demonstrations. First, we're going to show you the jaw, how it goes around the king pin. What you want to do, take the pin and clip off, that will release the handle, pull your handle all the way out and you're going to hear it lock into the open or couple position. Just to give you a demonstration, for the video here, we give you an example of a 2 inch diameter king pin that would be on your pin box. Basically, it would just be sliding in like this. Once it slides in, you can see the jaw will totally wrap around it, locking bars slides across and you're locked into place. Then all you have to do is take your pin and clip. There's a hole right through here. Put it through, clip it, and you're ready to go. Then again, just to show you the rotation on the . How the autoglide works, you could see. Again, when it gets back into the towing position, it will lock into place. That should do it for the review of part number DM8550024. Packing for shipment was very good, but plan to have a strong friend or a hand truck (as I did). Installation went well with no issues. I have purchased several different products from etrailer. The folks there have been the most helpful, courteous that I believe I have ever dealt with on the internet... I purchased a demco slider 5th wheel hitch in February 2018. It arrived on time in good condition. I installed in a Ford F-350 with factory puck system I had no issues with install. I did watch the videos online and did find them helpful. I purchased this hitch because with the newer Fords as I'm sure some have experienced they sit about 3" higher than the trucks prior 2017. With my existing hitchI couldn't get low enough and the demco it did allow me to go3 '' lower. Even though the camper still runs a little high in the front its still a whole lot better than what it was. So after one year of use it did work well. It was a little bigger than my previous hitch it and is not an easy job to do by yourself without the help of some sort of hoist. All said I am happy with this product and would give it a good recommendation. 607004

Ok... The darn thing weighs a ton! but that was outlined in their info... Just want to make that known. It took three of us to put in the base minus the "head". That was work !! As for the unit, it does as advertised. It swivels when turning and moves aft providing plenty of cab clearance. Don't expect to do a 90 degree turn however, but for normal situations it works fine. One thing I'd love to see is an "adjustment" to move (slide) the "head" a little more rearward when connecting. I only have about 6" of clearance with the gate down so I have to be nearly perfectly aligned to make the hookup. Speaking of which, hooking up can be a challenge. The clamps must have some "slack" and not be too tight against the pin box or alignment becomes a real issue. Also, if you aren't aligned with the trailer when disconnecting you'll need to have that same "off alignment" position when reconnecting as the "head" cannot be moved at all by hand. This can make for having to loosen the clamps, make the hook up, straighten the truck with the trailer and then have to re tighten the clamps. All in all, the unit is as expected and does provide movement aft and forward as you turn. Makes parking in that tight spot a bit less nerve racking... As for Customer Support Demco is spot on!! I had a couple of set up issues. One call cleared the misunderstanding on my end and the install went fine after that. On a second call, they also explained how to set up the clamps to better help with the above mentioned issues. But the nature of the design does not allow much leeway. Enjoy!!! 601243

I INSTALLED THE DEMCO HIJACKER AUTOSLIDE FITH WHEEL HITCH IN MY 17 F250 WITH THE FACTORY PREP PACKAGE. THE HITCH FIT PERFECTLY INTO THE FACTORY PUCK SYSTEM. DID NEED A FRIENDS HELP DO TO THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE OPERTION OF THE AUTOSLIDE AND THE FACT THAT I DON'T REALLY HAVE TO WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT THE TRAILER CONTACTING THE CAB OF TRUCK SINCE I HAVE A 6 FOOT BED. THIS IS THE FIRST FIFTH WHEEL HITCH I HAVE EVER USED BUT WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT HAS A TRUCK WITH A SHORT BED. ONLY 4 STARS BECAUSE OF THE LEARNING CURVE OF HITCHING UP AND THE THING IS PRETTY HEAVY. ONCE I LEARNED THAT THE HITCH AND THE TRUCK HAVE TO BE PRETTY STRAIGHT IN LINE DUE TO THE CAPTURE PLATES HITCHING UP HAS BECOME A NONE ISSUE. The Demco hitch works okay once it is latched, but it is really hard to get it locked to the pin. The saddle tries to fall forward, making it hard for the pin to hit home. Once while hooking up, it seemed to be latched, but when I pulled forward, the whole trailer landed on the bed sides! Luckily, the pin landed on the base of the hitch, and no damage was done to the puller, even though the trailer made contact with it. It is difficult to hook up because you have to be pretty much exactly straight with the pin box. Sometimes when I start out from a standing stop, it will jerk really hard. After taking out two rear windows over the years, this was the only way to go. It took me a couple of tries to get the right height and I should have mounted the hitch to the rear in its rails. I think that's mostly on me because I am used to assembling things so I must not have been understanding the instructions. Anyway, once mounted it is a thing of beauty. 1year after purchase...and thrilled with my Demco 18,000lb, auto slider. When I bought my GMC short bed p/u, prior owner had installed a Reese puck system ...but no hitch was included with the sale. This 5th wheel hitch performs exactly as advertised, automatically extending the trailer rearward whenever making a tight turn with the truck. I can back my short bed Ram 2500 into a 90 degree angle between the truck and the trailer without trailer's nose (Grand Design Reflection 337 RLS) coming too close to the cab. This is why I bought this hitch -- I wasn't interested in having to get out of the truck to manually slide the trailer rearward when maneuvering in tight places. The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty,smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather.
