E16 5th Wheel Jaw

Simple, Secure Hookup

With a dual-pivoting head that offers 10 degrees of lateral movement, the E16 fifth-wheel hitch makes hookup a snap, even on unlevel ground. Once the king pin slides into the hitch, the auto-locking, slide-bar jaw secures it in place. A unique feature of the E16 is the rear steel tension bar within the jaw that activates upon hookup to clamp down on the king pin, providing a tighter grip that maximizes security and minimizes rattle.

R16 5th Wheel Roller

Non-Binding R16 Roller

Specially designed for trucks with 6' to 8' beds, this non-binding slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - C16616 Review

Today we're going to review part number C16616. This is the CURT E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with the R16 rollers, the base rails, and the universal installation kit all included. It has a 16,000 pound weight capacity. This is an entry level hitch which offers several unique features. It has the auto locking slide bar jaw mechanism which provides superior security. Right here, it has the rear tension bar.

This will work with the slide bar to clamp around your kingpin to help minimize rattle and movement. On the handle, you notice there are two tabs with holes in them. That's so when the handle is in the down position, the lock position, you can put a padlock through there for extra security. The padlocks, we don't .. Does not come with the hitch but we do sell them separately on our website and they're listed on this product page as a related product. The head is a dual pivoting head.

It goes front to back and then the skid plate goes side to side. It'll give you 10 degree lateral movement for a nice simple hookup. The head itself is on perma lube pivot pushings to help increase hitch life and reduce maintenance. The anti-rattle skid plate right here provides a nice smooth quiet ride. They do recommend to use a nylon lube plate on your kingpin when you're hooking up and the reason that is is that lube plate will help prevent scratches on the skid plate and it'll let that kingpin glide a lot more smoothly into the hitch during your hookup. The roller is a R16 roller which provides 12 inches of clearance, front to back.

While your turning your shortbed truck at slow speeds, like in a maneuvering position in a camp ground and you want to make the trailer will clear the cab of your truck, this will go back 12 inches towards the tailgate to give you that extra clearance. It is using non-binding rods to guide it and it's a maintenance free design so there's no lubrication necessary. When you install this hitch head into the crossmember and the crossmember gets bolted to these roller rails, or the roller legs right here, when you bolt this in on the crossmember, there's four rows of holes so you can pick the correct height you need because you want to have your trailer and your truck as level as possible. It'll give you four positions, a range of 3 inches, to get the correct hitch height. The hitch height is measured the truck bed to the top of the skid plates so you want that to be as close so the trailer stays level. It'll give you a range of 14 inches hitch height to 17 inches in hitch height. The base rails that I haven't installed are all included.

The universal fit installation kit and hardware is all included. The hitch itself is a sturdy steel construction. It has a nice carbide black finish. A few specs on it again. The application is for full size trucks with 6 foot to 8 foot long beds. Gross towing weight capacity is 16,000 pounds. The vertical load limit, or pid weigh capacity, is 4,000 pounds. Again, the roller travel is 12 inches, front to back. Again, the hitch height 14 inches to 17 inches. What I'm going to show you now is how the kingpin will hook up into the head then we'll show you how the slider will move. Basically, here's what . An example of a kingpin that would be on your pin box of your trailer. Again, we do recommend to put a nylon lube plate over this. What you first want to do is open up your jaw there, or your slide bar, lift this completely straight up, pull it all the way out, and when you do that, it will lock. The tension bar will come up and hold that slide bar open. Now you're ready for hookup. Your kingpin will be sliding in and what happens is it slides in, it will push against that tension bar. When it does that, it allows that slide bar to go all the way across and the tension bar behind it keeps tension on it to eliminate any rattle. If you notice, the handle goes completely down and that way it's in the position where it won't open up and these are lined up. You can put your padlock there to lock it into position. If you're going to move the slider, right now it's in the towing position. It's locked closest to the cab of the truck. If you're going to go into a camp ground and you want to maneuver around in short area and make some tight turns, you want to put it back 12 inches to the maneuvering position. What you want to do is take this handle, pull it out, and then just rotate the handle towards the cab of the truck. You'll notice the red line showing. That means do not tow because it's not locked in. Over here, there should be a green line. Well, it's not going to show. The green would mean it's ready to tow and because it's on lock, it's not ready to tow so the green line won't be showing but the red line will. What you'll do, as this rotates you can see once it gets into the maneuvering position, it will lock into place. Then you'll notice, you can't really see the red anymore but you can see the green line. The green line means you're locked in and ready to tow. You'll do your maneuvering and when you're done maneuvering and you want to get back on the road and move it closer to the cab, again you'll just . The only difference is you'll pull this handle up and you'll rotate towards the trailer this time. Again, you'll see the red which means you don't want to tow right now because it's unlocked. This will go back towards the cab. Once it locks in the towing position, this covers up and then you'll see the green showing on this side. Those colors are visible from the cab of your truck. You can look down and see the position it's in. It's all locked and ready to go. That should do it for the review on part number C16616. This is the CURT E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with the R16 roller, the base rails, and the universal installation kit. It has a 16,000 pound weight capacity.

Upon receipt of the E16 Hitch, R16 slider, rails, & universal installation kit I noticed one package was broken open and it contents falling out. Upon taking inventory determined parts were missing. I contacted etrailer about the missing parts and they responded amazingly. Even though the damaged packaging was not there fault I had the missing part a day and half later. The hitch was installed on time and is everything I expected it to be. I will be a return customer. 762703

Review from a similar E5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

As a first timer towing a 27' fifth wheel, I was really nervous. And it didn't help that the people who installed my hitch threw away the directions. Thankfully technology and YouTube came to the rescue with a video on EXACTLY how to hitch up. And once I figured out that the jaws have to be opened to accept the kingpin, I was well and truly set. The hitch worked like a dream and hooking up was easy. Yesterday, I did it all by myself using the rearview mirror. Thank you so much for a wonderful, easy to use product. I am no longer nervous about hitching, unhitching and towing. Now if you have another product to help with the whole backing up thing..... 254388

This is a great product and all the parts and hardware arrived in tact. Had a few issues with the under bed mounts due to my truck is the 2017 power wagon and more parts had to be removed to get installed and relocate harnesses. over all installation took a good day even with a mechanics back ground. Also will be installing hellwig air bags to accommodate coil springs. I really liked that etrailer customer service called me to verify my order. After that the package arrived with in a week. Really happy with the parts and etrailer service. 477054

The hitch is easy to put together as I have a 2016 2500hd I had to bolt it inn the very top holes to clear my box. There seems to be alot of plat in the king pin lock a clank and clunk starting and stopping. Id buy from etrailer again they are a great company this product was built for what I paid its a middle of the road hitch. I will upgrade at some point 377732

It works I don’t care for the hitch after a year. There is to much slack in the hitch and no adjustment. Don’t like the handle you have to turn just right to disconnect. Wouldn’t buy it again matter of fact gonna switch it out this year as I don’t like it.

Thanks for your follow up Myron. I have confirmed with my contacts at Curt and if you would like you can change out the head unit of your current system and use the # C16520
Replacement Head Unit for Curt A16 and Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 16,000 lbs
$402.80
. This head unit offers upgraded features in the coupler head, handle and adjustable height adjustability of the head to the base. If you were to switch out the heads only it would be more cost effective that getting an entire new 5th wheel hitch, and you would be able to utilize your existing underbed install kit, rails, and slider portion of your existing system. However if you would like to consider a different hitch set up, I have provided a link for your reference that includes the 5th wheel hitches that have the same capacity of your exisiting system for reference.

I've only towed my camper once with my new hitch so far and it worked just fine, when i bought it, it arrived on time and in good shape, the only little problem i had was part of the steel under the release handle wasn't painted so when it rained rusty water came out the handle tube and kind of stained my rubber bed liner, but it was an easy fix. anyway i'm happy with it ! P.S. the vehicle specific frame mount makes the set-up much quicker and eaiser than the universal mount . 305663

Avoid, very poor quality. Bangs so hard back and forth seems like it will break, according to curt completely normal. Also made in china which is not disclosed before purchase 496415

Comments
There are three main types of jaw systems used on fifth wheel hitches, a slide bar, dual-jaw and a single wrap-around jaw.Slide bar jaws are found in budget priced fifth wheel hitches. They do a fine job of retaining the king pin, but this design doesnt hold the pin very tightly so there will be some noise and chucking during acceleration and braking as the pin moves around in the hitch. Hitches with this type of jaw are very reasonably priced, but the ride quality youll experience isnt always the best. Dual jaws are a better design found in moderately and premium-priced hitches. This set- up does a better job of holding the king pin and will allow some but not a lot of movement. Higher end hitches like the Reese Titan or the B and W companion use a serrated or partial wrap around jaw that further limit movement. The wrap around jaw such as whats seen in the Reese Elite series holds the king pin very tightly for very minimal movement and a very smooth ride.

Review from a similar E5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The product went in my truck just fine but the instructions were not the best to read. I wish that the company would of gave me an orthographic blue print instead of an isometric. "2D instead of 3D". A video would of been great to see some of the tricks. But all in all everyting went pretty well. It took me from 3:30pm to 10:30pm to get it put in. Once I did the first side the second side went much faster. Make sure the brackets are not flipped around so you don't add extra holes like I did. The box was complete distroyed when it arrived. I think that every thing is in operational shape won't know until I hook up. 186424

Well packed, free 5 days shipping, easy to assemble and nice looking hitch. Im extra amazed because i can remove the king pin base/head from the bridge leg assembly to easily transport them. Still not tested with the coach. Practically no lateral movement and have the suspicion bushings. Very firm and easy mechanisms. Do not leave the gate open for long term because could damage the main spring. I plan to pull a 11k 334FWFLS. Nothing compared to this hitch in this price range. I will add some extra feedback after couple travels. 450600

Review from a similar E5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The Product was nice and worth the money, the packaging for shipping was really poor. The shipping was very fast but when we received it, one part was damaged with dents and scratches. We are very unsatisfied with that. We paid 400 for a hitch that is damaged and will rust. The parts in the hitch box were not wrapped for protection. Also, instead of putting it in a box that fit, they staples a million staples to make a box around the factory box. It was very unprofessional. Pretty upset for the money we spent. 413611

Successfully installed this hitch even in a RAM Box. I did remove 2" from the handles so I have the proper clearance for the RAM box. That shortened length hasn't changed my ability to unlock the hitch for either function even being 5'-8". I do think this installation method with U-bolts that go around the frame is easier than the 1/2 ton version I installed which pulled knurled bolts through the factory frame holes to hold the support brackets. 512542

The hitch arrived very fast, and was boxed well. It doesn't come assembled in order to reduce the shipping size, but it's super easy to assemble. Just four 1/2" bolts attach the legs to the main crossmember, and one small 3/16" bolt attaches the lever release arm. In all, it only took about 15 minutes to assemble and set in the truck. It even comes with the hitch pins needed to install on your rails. The only thing you'll need that's not included is about 4 to 8, 1/2" washers. Very happy with the hitch, and always look to etrailer.com for my replacement hauling/trailer parts! 771307

  • What is Towing Capacity of 2010 Dodge Ram 4.7 Liter with Tow Package
Looks like your 2010 Ram 1500 with a 4.7 liter V8 would have a towing capacity of 7,650 lbs if you have a 2 wheel drive truck or 7,450 lbs if you have a 4 wheel drive truck. Those two figures would be the absolute max trailer weight you could tow with your truck. The Curt universal slider hitch and rail kit part # C16616 won't work for you though as the rail kit does not fit your truck. Instead you'd need the semi-custom rail kit part # C16306-204 which fits your truck and then the E16...

Towing a fifth-wheel trailer with a 2010 Dodge Ram Pickup with 5 foot 7 inch bed is definitely possible. Beds shorter than 6 feet require the addition of a Sidewinder replacement pin box for the fifth-wheel trailer you will be towing. Universal install kits are the most cost-effective option but do take longer to install and they do require drilling into the truck's frame. Based on your truck, 2016 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 with 6 foot, 4 inch bed, 5.7 liter motor, and 3.21 rear end, and with standard rather than premium options the capacity can vary depending on the trim level of the truck: Outdoorsman, Big Horn, and Lone Star, 8,250 pounds Tradesman and Express, 8,150 pounds Sport, 8,000 pounds Laramie, 7,950 pounds Payload in general...

  • Will the RBW X-16 5th Wheel Hitch Fit on a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab
The RBW X-16 fifth wheel hitch will transfer from a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 to your 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab as long as the base rails in your 2010 Ram are standard above-bed base rails. If you do not already have base rails installed in your truck, then you could install the Reese Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit, # RP50142-58, which is compatible with your RBW X-16 fifth wheel hitch. This kit includes industry standard base rails, but also has vehicle specific mounting brackets...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Sidewinder Required for 5th Wheel Towing 2010 Dodge Ram 5-1/2 Foot Bed
With a bed less than 6 feet long, you will need to take some measurements to make sure you will be able to execute 90 degree turns safely. Since your bed is so short, a sidewinder and stationary 5th wheel hitch will be required. The correct sidewinder depends of the make and model of the pin box on the trailer. You should also contact the trailer manufacturer to make sure the trailer frame can withstand the stress of a sidewinder. First, measure the distance from the center of the hitch...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit Compatible with Pro Series Gooseneck Adapter Plate
For a 2019 Ford F-350 I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50074-58 or just the bracket kit # RP50074. The custom brackets will allow you to mount the 5th wheel rails easily and these rails will accommodate the 5th wheel hitches and the gooseneck adapter you have pictured. The rails are industry standard so you will have no issues with compatibility of your gooseneck adapter # 49080 or 5th wheel hitch between vehicles. If...

  • 5th Wheel Towing Capacity and Hitch Recommendation for 2010 Ram 1500 with 5.7L Engine
I took a look at the online specs for your 2010 Ram 1500 and while some model trucks (typically the 3/4 ton and 1 ton models) do have higher weight capacities for 5th wheel trailers than with standard bumper pull trailers this is not the case with your Ram. The 10,200 pound max trailer weight you found for your particular model Ram 1500 is its capacity whether it's a standard bumper pull or 5th wheel trailer. To tow a 5th wheel trailer you will need to install a set of base rails in...

  • Does Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Roller and Rail Kit Come with Everything Needed
The Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Roller, Rails and Universal Installation Kit # C16616 that you referenced would come with everything needed to install in a truck bed. It comes with the roller hitch, the rails, and the install hardware needed to install the hitch in the bed of the truck so you'd be set. The only other thing you might want wiring to to give you a 7-way in the bed of your truck as well. For that you'd want the part # 41157 and you'd be set.

  • Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Recommendation for 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Short Bed
The best fitting fifth wheel rail kits are the custom fit kits as they don't require frame drilling and the install time will be about half the time when compared to a universal kit. For your 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 the kit I recommend then is the Reese part # RP50142-58 which is custom fit for your truck. There is a semi-custom kit available for your truck as part # RP30035-386 but you'll be MUCH happier with the custom fit it. There are no universal kits that fit your truck. Since...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Sidewinder for 5th Wheel Towing with 2010 Toyota Tundra 5-1/2 Foot Bed
For your 2010 Toyota Tundra with a 5-1/2 foot bed, you will need to use a stationary trailer hitch, like # PS30093 with installation kit # RP30035-309, and a sidewinder in order to have enough clearance to execute 90 degree turns safely. I have included a link to the installation details below for the hitch. There are some measurements you can take to be sure the sidewinder, which offers the most clearance at 22 inches, will work. Start by measuring the distance from the center of the...

  • Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Rails Only for a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short Bed
Generally speaking if you have a short bed truck, like your 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 6-1/2 foot bed, then you would need to use a slider hitch and not a fixed hitch. That is unless the trailer is very narrow or it has a tapered front cap that was designed to be towed by a short bed truck. Otherwise the trailer could make contact with the truck cab when making tight turns. If you already have frame brackets that you want to use then you would need to get the hitch and rails separate...

If you would rather go with a custom installation kit you can use # C16437-204 with hitch # C16115. Custom installation kits are easier to install and require less drilling for installation.

The Curt E16 hitch you mentioned includes the # C16100 universal install kit that is compatible with your 2015 Silverado 2500. The kit uses four brackets mounted to the truck frame as attachment points for the bed rails. You will need to drill holes into the truck frame to install the frame brackets. This being said, the E16 hitch provided with the # C16116 wouldn't be a good choice for your truck. In order to provide proper clearance between the front of the fifth wheel trailer loft...

  • Will Curt E16 5th Wheel Hitch and Universal Install Kit Fit a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Short Bed
Curt 5th wheel hitch and universal installation kit # C16116 will fit your 1997 Dodge Ram. But since you have a short bed I recommend the slider version, # C16616, so you will have more clearance when making turns while towing. If your truck has the factory 7-Way connector at the bumper you can add an in-bed harness # C56071, that will plug in line with the factory 7-Way. This allows you to have 2 functioning 7-Ways without the need of an extension. If you want to use an extension though...
