E16 5th Wheel Jaw

Simple, Secure Hookup

With a dual-pivoting head that offers 10 degrees of lateral movement, the E16 fifth-wheel hitch makes hookup a snap, even on unlevel ground. Once the king pin slides into the hitch, the auto-locking, slide-bar jaw secures it in place. A unique feature of the E16 is the rear steel tension bar within the jaw that activates upon hookup to clamp down on the king pin, providing a tighter grip that maximizes security and minimizes rattle.

R16 5th Wheel Roller

Non-Binding R16 Roller

Specially designed for trucks with 6' to 8' beds, this non-binding slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - 16516 Review

Today we're going to review part number 16516. This is the Curt E16 fifth wheel trailer hitch on the Curt R16 roller. This is a slide bar jar design hitch and has a 16,000 pound weight capacity. For demonstration purposes I do have the slider and the hitch head mounted on some base rails with the mounting brackets just to show you how it looks installed in a vehicle. The rails and the mounting brackets are sold separately on our web site. This is an auto locking slide bar jaw mechanism right here. Provides superior security. Has the rear steel tension bar right here that works with the slide bar to clamp around the king pin.

Minimizes rattle and movement. Right here they do have holes on these tabs here that you can actually lock this handle if you want with a padlock. The padlock we would sell separately. This head has a 4-position height adjustment for multiple towing applications. You can set it to the correct height for your application. This dual-pivoting head goes front to back, has a 10-degree lateral movement of the skid plate for simple hook-up. Does use permalube pivot bushings to increase your hitch life and reduce maintenance. This anti-rattle skid plate right here provides smooth, quiet ride. We do recommend a nylon move plate, which we sell separately on our web site, to use on your king pin of your 5th wheel trailer.

This will help prevent scratches on the skid plate and let your king pin glide smoothly into the hitch during hook-up. This hitch is a sturdy steel construction with a carbide black finish. The slider itself, this will help eliminate clearance problems during slow speed turns with this non-binding slider. This provides 12 inches of travel from front to back. It is designed to fit truck beds between 6 foot and 8 foot in length. This will provide clearance which is required for your short bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds, prevents your trailer from hitting the cab of your truck during sharp, slow speed turns.

It does slide smoothly on these rounded non-binding rods. Again I mentioned it's designed for use on trucks on beds shorter than 8 foot, but not recommended for use on truck beds shorter than 6 foot. The base rails and installation kit I mentioned are sold separately. This will mount onto industry standard rails made by Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Pro Series Reese, and Valley. On the installation kit, which is the mounting bracket that mounts to the frame of your vehicle, we do recommend to make the installation a lot easier to use a custom fit or vehicle specific bracket kit. We do list those on our web site.

If you put your year and model vehicle in, it will tell you if there's one available. If there is, we do recommend to use it. It saves you about half the installation time, mainly because the mounting brackets would have holes drilled that would use existing holes in your truck frame. The slider is constructed of a durable, carbide powder-coated steel. This part number does come with the pins and clips which are used to run through the rails. Once you drop your slider into the rail, the pins and clips would hold it into place. Also comes with 4 of these rubber sound dampeners. Basically they have slots in them. Basically what those would be used for is before you drop your slider into the opening, there's a tab on it. These would go onto that tab on each corner. Drop it into the rails. Tighten it down with your pin and clips and these will help eliminate any rattle or noise with your slider mounted to your rails. The gross towing weight capacity of this is 16,000 pounds. The vertical load weight or pin weight capacity is 4,000 pounds. Again the height can be adjusted from 15 to 17 inches. Travel is 12 inches front to back. I just want to give you a demonstration on how the hitch works and how the slider works. Right now the slide bar is closed. What you want to do when you're ready to hook up, lift your handle straight up, just pull it out. Once you pull it out enough it would lock into position. This tension bar will hold that slide bar open. Basically I have a demonstration. This is an example of a king pin that would be attached on your fifth wheel. Once that slides in, it will push up against this tension bar and that will release the slide bar. When it does that, you can see that slide bar goes across and that tension bar would still keep tension on the king pin. Just move your handle down to where these tabs line up. You can lock it or put a pin and clip through there and that handle wouldn't move. You're ready to go. One last thing I want to show you on the head before I forget. Another nice feature on this is if you're by yourself and you want to remove it from the truck bed, nobody around to help you, has these pins and clips that hold this head onto the cross member. You just pop the clip off, pull the pin out. Do the same over here. You can lift that head out separately. Lift the cross member out separately and then the slider out separately. Makes it easier for just one person around. We'll go ahead and attach this back. Slide it on. There we go. I'm going to show you, demonstrate the slider on it. Basically right now it is locked in the towing position. Towing position would be the closest to the cab. Where I'm standing would be the cab of your tow vehicle. If you notice the color coding, the green is showing. That means it's locked in the towing position. It's not moving. Over here would be red if it wasn't locked. I'll show you that. When you pull this out and you're going to go to maneuvering position, just pull out on your handle. When you pull out on your handle, just turn it a little bit counterclockwise and that will move that tab out of the way, allow it to slide and you'll see the red showing. The green is not showing so it's not locked. This would slide back to the tailgate, give you more maneuvering position. Once you hit that cutout there, it would slide in, lock it into place. The red's not showing. The green is so it's locked in maneuvering so it's moved the 12 inches away from the cab of your vehicle. When you're done maneuvering and you want to go back into the towing position, again we'll just pull this handle out and this time we'll move it clockwise which will put the tab toward the tow vehicle. The reason you do that is because then, again it's showing red, no green, so again this slides into the towing position. Once it hits those tabs, locks into position. No red. You see the green over here so you're locked and ready to tow. That should do it for the review on part number 16516, the Curt E16 fifth wheel trailer hitch on the Curt R16 roller in a 16,000 pound weight capacity. .

The hitch is easy to put together as I have a 2016 2500hd I had to bolt it inn the very top holes to clear my box. There seems to be alot of plat in the king pin lock a clank and clunk starting and stopping. Id buy from etrailer again they are a great company this product was built for what I paid its a middle of the road hitch. I will upgrade at some point 377732

It works I don’t care for the hitch after a year. There is to much slack in the hitch and no adjustment. Don’t like the handle you have to turn just right to disconnect. Wouldn’t buy it again matter of fact gonna switch it out this year as I don’t like it.

Thanks for your follow up Myron. I have confirmed with my contacts at Curt and if you would like you can change out the head unit of your current system and use the # C16520
Replacement Head Unit for Curt A16 and Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 16,000 lbs
$402.80
. This head unit offers upgraded features in the coupler head, handle and adjustable height adjustability of the head to the base. If you were to switch out the heads only it would be more cost effective that getting an entire new 5th wheel hitch, and you would be able to utilize your existing underbed install kit, rails, and slider portion of your existing system. However if you would like to consider a different hitch set up, I have provided a link for your reference that includes the 5th wheel hitches that have the same capacity of your exisiting system for reference.

This is a great product and all the parts and hardware arrived in tact. Had a few issues with the under bed mounts due to my truck is the 2017 power wagon and more parts had to be removed to get installed and relocate harnesses. over all installation took a good day even with a mechanics back ground. Also will be installing hellwig air bags to accommodate coil springs. I really liked that etrailer customer service called me to verify my order. After that the package arrived with in a week. Really happy with the parts and etrailer service. 477054

This is my first hitch. I decided to go this route after finding out the dealership wanted over 1500 to install rails hitch and plug. Install was not too aweful bad I did the install in about 4 hours of everything. I took my time so nothing would be screwed up. The install videos where awesome and very discriptive. 346172

Hi,I am looking at this particular hitch set up Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w R16 Roller - Slide Bar Jaw - 16,000 lbs Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for 2007 Toyota Tundra - Gloss Finish Part Numbers: 16516, C16468-104I am in the process of looking at hitch options but I would like to know the exact weight of the hitch when assembled together. How much does this hitch weigh? Thanks.

Our shipping weight is 216 pounds. I called my contact over at Curt and assembled outside of the boxes, it tips the scales at a bit over 200 pounds. There are a few things that make up the extra weight over other designs. The bars that the slider system use are solid round stock, not hollow tubes, that are secure to plate steel bases. The legs are made of plate steel rather than stamped. All of these adds up to put the hitch at about 50 pounds heavier than other similar setups.

I've only towed my camper once with my new hitch so far and it worked just fine, when i bought it, it arrived on time and in good shape, the only little problem i had was part of the steel under the release handle wasn't painted so when it rained rusty water came out the handle tube and kind of stained my rubber bed liner, but it was an easy fix. anyway i'm happy with it ! P.S. the vehicle specific frame mount makes the set-up much quicker and eaiser than the universal mount . 305663

Excellent product. Installation wasn't to bad, did take some time but overall wasn't horrible. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but works flawlessly. I chose this hitch for two reasons. 1. It's a simple yet reliable design from a great manufacturer. 2. I needed the lower height adjustment than the Q series offered. My '06 dodge doesn't have any aftermarket suspension parts but I do run 285 70/17 tires and it does sit a little bit higher. Glad I did because the lower height adjustment is almost perfect. I highly recommend getting a lube plate to go with any fifth wheel hitch, very cheap and no mess. As far as etrailer.com goes. This is the best place I've ever ordered from. Great communication and very fast shipping. The hitch arrived days faster than expected even with the bad weather delays. You can't go wrong with this item or this company. I will definitely be ordering from here in the future and will be buying more Curt products. 238344

So here I am 1 year later and 7000 + miles later having towed/hauled a 30' Keystone Cougar with the Curt E16K hitch and bed rails. I installed the item and it was fairly easy with the help of a friend to help tighten bolts and nuts. On the rails I have the E16K Curt Hitch in a 2007 - 2500 Dodge Ram Cummins. I used to remove the Hitch after every trip. That lasted for the first 2-3 times. It is darn heavy to remove and put back in. So now I leave it installed in the truck and remove it when/if I need to haul something in the bed. Hope this helps your decision and Happy Hauling :o) 307813

The unit was as described and installed without a hitch (no pun intended). This unit went into a new GMC 1500 and we did not have to cut anything to install the mounting bolts -- but it was a bear to get the nuts on the bolts and then tighten. I used a universal (free) installation kit and we had to weld the braces to the frame. eTrailer always delivers on time and so far always with the correct product - wouldn't think of going to any other company. 206872

Product was as advertised. With a standard 6.5ft box on my truck I was always worried about the front of my 5th wheel hitting the cab while getting into some of the tight turns needed for some camping spaces. This hitch has eliminated that worry. As a bonus with the hitch in the rearward position I can now easily see the hitch while hooking up the RV. Very happy with the speed in which etrailer processed and shipped this hitch. 493089

by:

Successfully installed this hitch even in a RAM Box. I did remove 2" from the handles so I have the proper clearance for the RAM box. That shortened length hasn't changed my ability to unlock the hitch for either function even being 5'-8". I do think this installation method with U-bolts that go around the frame is easier than the 1/2 ton version I installed which pulled knurled bolts through the factory frame holes to hold the support brackets. 512542

There are three main types of jaw systems used on fifth wheel hitches, a slide bar, dual-jaw and a single wrap-around jaw.Slide bar jaws are found in budget priced fifth wheel hitches. They do a fine job of retaining the king pin, but this design doesnt hold the pin very tightly so there will be some noise and chucking during acceleration and braking as the pin moves around in the hitch. Hitches with this type of jaw are very reasonably priced, but the ride quality youll experience isnt always the best. Dual jaws are a better design found in moderately and premium-priced hitches. This set- up does a better job of holding the king pin and will allow some but not a lot of movement. Higher end hitches like the Reese Titan or the B and W companion use a serrated or partial wrap around jaw that further limit movement. The wrap around jaw such as whats seen in the Reese Elite series holds the king pin very tightly for very minimal movement and a very smooth ride.

This 5th wheel assembled and installed with ease. Was advised that it would install without moving my air bag suspension. This is not true. If you use the custom vehicle specific brackets, you will have to remove airbags if equipped and re-install. Had that little issue not popped up, install would have taken about an hour or two at most. 487231

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Factory Prep Package
  • For a 5th wheel hitch that fits directly into the factory 5th wheel prep package in your 2016 Ram 2500 you can use B&W hitch # BWRVK3600. But on a short bed truck even the mounting range of the B&W hitch head might not provide enough clearance to make tight turns safely. What I recommend is to use Demco adapter # DM6099 which fits in the Ram factory prep package. This will act as a base for the Demco HiJacker, # DM8550035, rated for 21,000 pounds. Another benefit is that this hitch slides...

  • You will want the hitch to be set at the height that 1) allows the trailer to be level, and 2) allows you a minimum of 6 inches between the bottom of the trailer loft and the top of the bed rails. The fifth wheel hitches offer several inches of up and down adjustment to help accomplish this. Many pin boxes are also height adjustable. To do this you will want to measure from the top of your truck bed floor to the ground and then measure from the plate of the pin box on the trailer down...

  • If your bed liner is the spray-in type, you can simply install the fifth wheel hitch rails directly on top of it. However, if your bed liner is the hard plastic drop-in type, the liner would need to be trimmed away so that the bed rails have direct metal-to-metal contact with the truck bed. If the rails are installed directly over a drop-in liner, eventually the portion of the liner under the rails will deteriorate, which would cause the rails to become loose and lead to a dangerous situation....

  • Will a Reese Slider Fit Curt Rail Adapter for a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 with Factory Prep Package
  • Curt Adapter Rails # C16023 are designed specifically to work with Curt slider hitches but not any other brands so I cannot recommend using it with your Reese hitch. For a similar hitch that will work with the adapter you can use the Curt 16K slider # C16521 with dual jaws or # 16516 for a model with a slide bar jaw.

  • Can a 5th Wheel Trailer be Towed with a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5 Foot 7 Inch Bed
  • Towing a fifth-wheel trailer with a 2010 Dodge Ram Pickup with 5 foot 7 inch bed is definitely possible. Beds shorter than 6 feet require the addition of a Sidewinder replacement pin box for the fifth-wheel trailer you will be towing. To select the correct Sidewinder pin box, see link, you will need to determine the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on your trailer. Once you have selected a trailer and Sidewinder, you will need to install a stationary 5th wheel hitch in the...

If you write back with your year, make and model, I can tell you what hitch and install kit would work for your truck. I attached a link to an FAQ page on fifth wheel trailers to the right for you to check out also.

  • What is The Maximum Towing Capacity of a 2006 Chevy Silverado
  • To determine the maximum trailer weight capacity you can tow with your 2006 Chevy Silverado, you will need take your Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and subtract that by the the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of your truck from the (GCWR) that will give you the maximum Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). This can all be found on the information tag located inside the driver door jamb. As long as the maximum towing capacity of your truck is higher than the gross trailer weight of your 5th wheel,...

  • Recommendations for Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Short Bed Truck with a Gooseneck Hitch
  • Since you have a short bed truck I would not recommend you use a fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter to tow your RV. The problem will be that you will not have enough clearance to make 90 degree turns with the RV because of the lack of clearance between the front of the trailer and the cab of your truck. Some fifth wheel trailers do not recommend the use of adapters so you will want to check the owners manual of the trailer as well. Honestly the best recommendation I could give you would...

  • Difference Between Curt Q16 and E16 Fifth Wheel Hitch Sliders
  • The Q series of Curt fifth wheel hitches are considered to be the nicer Curt fifth wheel hitch when compared to the E16 hitch. Biggest difference being the jaw design. The E16 # 16516 uses a slide bar jaw design that allows quite a bit more movement than the Q16 (now called A16) # C16521 which uses a 360 degree contact jaw.

  • Comparing 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Jaw Designs for a Hitch on a 2012 Ford F-250 Short Bed
  • There are a few different jaw types on a 5th wheel hitch. A slide bar can be found on the less expensive hitches like a Pro Series # PS30094. A slide bar, while secure, is going to provide the least snug fit and you will notice the king pin making some noise. Next are double jaws and are much more secure and cut down quite a bit on the movement and noise of the king pin. Many Reese, Curt, and other brand mid-level and higher end hitches have the double locking jaw design like # RP30075. The...
