Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion OEM Slider

To install the Companion OEM, first set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance.

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

B&W Companion OEM Ram Feet

Then, when the hitch head is fully assembled, simply place the hitch in the bed of your truck, lining the base up with the receiver sockets in the bed. Rotate all 4 handles on the hitch base out so that the built-in puck receivers are in the correct position to install in the sockets. Once the base is lined up, fold the handles in until they are in the locked position and secure them with the included pins.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch with Slider Installation - 2017 GMC Sierra 3500

Today on our 2017 GMC Sierra 3500, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the B&W Companion OEM Fifth Wheel with Slider for Chevy and GMC Towing Prep Package, part number BWRVK3770. Here's what our fifth wheel with slider looks like when it's fully installed. And since we have a short-bed truck, it's going to allow us to tow a fifth-wheel trailer. And have enough clearance to make those turns, without having to worry about making contact with our cab. If we come to the handle right here, start in the lock position, and we can rotate it to the unlock position. Then we're going to have 12 inches of travel so the fifth wheel can go farther back towards the tailgate. We can make our turn, and then once we straighten out, we can again come to the handle, unlock it, and it'll slide back into the towing position. Now this fifth wheel slider is designed to work with the GM and Chevrolet factory prep package, and that's what these handles here are. It's just going to sit in and lock into place.

Our fifth wheel head is going to feature a dual draw system. So it's going to have a full 360 degree kingpin contact, which is going to reduce some of that noise we hear when we're going down the road. Underneath our head here, where it mounts to our base, we're going to have two large polyurethane bushings. Which not only are going to give us a secure place that our head's going to mount to, it's also going to provide a little bit of cushion and cut down on some of that noise and rattling when we're driving down the road. Our handle is going to feature a tethered safety pin, so we don't have to worry about losing it. And when we're ready to hook up, we can simply rotate the handle back, and there's actually a small notch back here that we can put our safety pin in that'll leave our fifth wheel open so we can get ready to hook up. Once we do bring our trailer in and the kingpin makes contact, it's going to push. And then we can rotate our handle back, and then again making sure it's secure with the pin and clip.

We do have three height adjustments. It's going to be a little hard to see in this particular position, but these arms here are bolted to the inside of our base. Now they're going to go at the lowest setting, the 17 inches. The middle setting is going to be right around 18 inches, and then the highest setting is going to be 19 inches. Our hitch is going to feature a 5,000 pound vertical load limit, along with a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight limit. Now I do want to mention, you always want to double check your vehicles owner's manual to make sure it can handle pulling that amount of weight.

And you always want to go with the lowest setting of your entire towing system. Now our hitch is going to feature a steel construction with a nice gray powder coat finish. Which is going to set it apart from most others, because most others are going to have a black finish on it. Although our fifth wheel is rather heavy since it does use the factory prep package. If you have an extra set of hands you can pull the head off, pull a couple of pins, rotate some handles, and then lift the base out. And you'll have full-bed access in just a few minutes. Now that we've gone over some of the features and benefits of our hitch, let's show you how we get it installed.

To begin installation, we're going to come to the bottom of our base here. We're going to pull the pin and clips out, and we're going to rotate the handles so they're facing outward. We're going to need to do that on all four points around the base of our hitch. We're going to take our base, and we're going to set it into the puck system in our truck. Once we have our base securely in the puck system in our bed, we're going to take the handles and rotate them into the locked position. Once we have our levers adjusted, we can go ahead and re-secure them with the pin and clips. With the base mounted now we're going in and mount the arms, so we can put the head on top. We're going to have different positions that we're going to be able to mount the head, and in our application we're going to be using the lowest setting. Now we can take our arm, and again in our application because it's a short-bed truck, we're going to take the straight part of the arm here, and that's going to be going toward the tailgate so that it sits farther back, giving us that much more clearance before our trailer hits our cab. So at the lowest setting, we're going to take this bottom hole on our mount here, and we're going to line it up with the very bottom hole on our base here. And the way we're going to attach these, I'm going to take a half-inch bolt and a half-inch lock washer, and we're going to line up holes. We're going to secure them into place in all four of those holes, and we're going to have four per side. We're going to get the other side in as well. Once we have all of our hardware in place, come back using a three-quarter inch socket, I'm going to snug it all up. Again using a three-quarter inch socket, I'm going to come back, and I'm going to torque all my hardware down. And you're going to get that torque value from our instructions. We're going to repeat that for all of our hardware. We're almost ready to put the head on our fifth wheel, but we have a few minor things we need to finish up. We're going to have a spring clip, and if we notice one end is going to have a small ear that comes off the loop. We're going to line up the hole in our clip with the tab that has it coming off of the loop. And then we're going to take our quarter-inch bolt. It's a very short bolt. We're going to go through the bracket and the spring. Then we're going to secure it with a lock nut on the back side. Now I'm going to take two 7/16" wrenches and tighten it up just so it's a little snug. You don't want to crank it down right now, because we're going to have to mount the spring clip to our arm. So you can take two 7/16" wrenches, one to hold the bolt, and then one just to snug up the nut on the back side. The metal clip we're going to see, has a slight section, and that's going to mount to our arm here. When we get into position, the top piece of this rubber here, we're going to want to have about a half-inch of clearance between the top of our spring here and the bottom of our mount. So once we find a general spot that's about there, you're going to want to push firmly to hold it in place. Now we're going to take either a hammer, a rubber mount or whatever you have, and we're going to need to drive this onto the arm. We're going to take the head now. We're going to want to lift by these handles and get ready to put it in place. So where our handles are, is going to sit right over those rubber pads. If you notice we do have pins in place, so we're going to remove the clips and pull the pins out and let them hang for right now. We're going to do that on both sides. Now if we come back to those handles, we're going to lift up on the handles while pushing down on the head of our fifth wheel. Then we can see that they lock back down, and that's going to keep the head secure. And for secondary securement, that's where the pins and clips are going to come into play. So we can go and reinstall those. One final step, we're going to need to attach our handle. Now we're going to have a tethered pin, we can go ahead and remove the clip holding it in place, and we can pull the pin out. Now we're going to take our handle with the label facing up and the handle towards the back of our tailgate, and we're going to slide it into position. And it's going to automatically line the holes up. Now I mentioned that our safety pin does go in this first hole, so we can go ahead and put it back in place. That way we don't have to worry about getting mixed up and confusing which hole we put our hardware in that's going to attach our handle. We're going to have a couple of hex bolts here. We're going to drop them down through the holes, and then we can come back and take our flange nuts and attach them on the bottom. I'm going to come back and using a 7/32" allen socket and 9/16" wrench, I'm going to snug up my hardware. And that'll finish up our look at the B&W Companion OEM Fifth Wheel Hitch with Slider for GMC and Chevy Towing Prep Package, part number BWRVK3770 on our 2017 GMC Sierra 3500.

The hitch is great except that it has a tendency to not lock into place when putting it in the rear turning position. Sometimes needs to be slammed into position to get the handle to lock. Its very heavy! Must have two people to move the lower base section. I have a friend that has the Curt hitch and this hitch is much better in my opinion. It pulls a 38' Mobile Suite. 635218

Received B&W fifth wheel companion slider hitch was boxed up well. Very impressed with quality of hitch. Been in service now for a year and love it. Would recommend this product to fifth wheelers out there! 739266

The B&W slider hitch has worked great for me, the only thing I would change would be the length of slide. At the farthermost end of the "slide travel" this puts my fifth wheel pin box neck being very-very close to my tailgate. Other than that this is rock solid and locks tight to the king pin and the factory pucks in the bed. Thanks 733881

We have only owned two 5th wheel hitches. Our first one was a Reese slider. This one is by far better quality and easier to use. It provides a much quiter tow . The puck system is awesome on our Duramax. I would highly recommend this hitch, well worth the money. 726020

I've been hauling RV fivers for over 40 years, and I think my B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch is only my 4th hitch. Last year I bought a shiny new GMC 2500HD Duramax with the hitch puck systems. To celebrate, I decided to treat myself to a new hitch. WOW! Where has this thing been all my life. Easy to install and remove (provided you have a strong helper). What impresses me the most is how quiet it is in the bed while hauling. Hitching and un-hitching is easy-breezy. I can't recommend this fifth wheel hitch enough! Thanks etrailer! 713927

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

Just started 5th wheel camping and wanted a hitch that when removed left my truck box bare. I also talked to alot of people who talked about clunking and noise from their hitch while towing. I bought a 2013 32' Coachman which is pushing my 2009 F150 to its max. When pulling with this hitch it feels like the truck and trailer are one unit. No noise and no slop between the two units. I made a lifting pin that goes into the jaws and lifts it out with a comealong hooked to a rafter support in my garage. I then put it onto a wheel cart I made. No heavy lifting and one person can do it all. I've had one teflon foot fall of the hitch and the service was amazing no questions, no pictures, and no waiting. New piece was sent right away. Anyone who tows now and has looked at the hit are very impressed. I would definitly recomend this hitch to everyone. 592596

Every thing has been working good. Seems to take a good jolt to get it to slide with the trailer attached. Still a great product

This 5th wheel hitch works beautifully! Make sure you have the OEM puck system before ordering as I had to have a dealership install the puck system. The hitch puts together extremely easily and provides a very smooth ride. Looks clean and operates flawlessly. Love how this system can be removed at any time so I don’t lose my bed space. Works very well with an 8 ft bed. I would recommend this hitch to anyone! 744682

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

Ordered on Sunday, got it on Thursday. Box was in good shape and instructions were easy. It says 1 hr to install, but to ensure it is correct, need to double and triple check the dogs that connect to the truck to ensure that it is all seated correctly. The instructions tell you what you need, but forget that you also need some lithium grease and wrenches to go with the sockets that are listed in the instructions. Got the 25K because it can't hurt to have more capacity than needed. Plan on towing a toy hauler with a GVW of 19K. It is only $200 +/- more for the extra capacity from a 20K, but beefier than needed is better, just in case we need to haul up to the capacity of the truck. 634983

First of all, I received everything a day earlier than expected. I asked the delivery guys to put it in the back of my truck; so I didn't even have to lift it up. The B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch installed so easily, and believe me I'm no mechanic by any means. I deliver RV's all over the country. The B&W Companion hitch is so easy to use and once hooked up I could hardly tell the trailer was there. Excellent hitch that I would recommend highly. 593585

This is a quality product. It arrived quickly, the instructions were clear and in a very short time i was ready to pull our 5th wheel. We have not had any issues with the product. The fact that it is a two piece hitch sure makes installation/removal a fairly easy job. 585237

It might be a better option though to go with an all new Ford Companion slider hitch part # BWRVK3370 as that would allow you to sell your old hitch as a complete unit which would be easier than just a base.

  • Will The B and W Companion Slider Hitch Still Fit 2019 Chevy Sivlerado 3500 Long Bed
The B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider part # BWRVK3770 will fit your 2019 chevy Silverado 3500 with an 8 foot bed as long as you have the OEM prep package. Most people use the slider hitch for turning clearance in a short bed truck but it will still fit your 8 foot bed if you need it. The slider does provide 12" front to back for cab clearance. If you do not have the OEM prep puck package, I recommend the B and W Companion Slider Hitch part # BWRVK3400-5W with the underbed...

  • B&W Companion Hitch for 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD with Factory Puck System
If your 5th wheel trailer is equipped with a Sidewinder pivoting pin box then you do not need to use a sliding type hitch, even though you have a short-bed truck, although you still could so long as you kept it locked in the forward position. Since you have the factory 5th wheel prep kit in your 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 short-bed you absolutely can use the excellent B&W fixed-type Companion hitch # BWRVK3700. This drops right into your factory pucks, no adapter needed. B&W makes...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD Short Bed with Factory Rail Kit
For your 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 short bed that has the factory rail kit we have a great solution, but the Reese hitch you mentioned will not fit as it would only fit the Ford factory rail kits or the Reese Elite rail kits. What you would want is the B and W Companion Slider part # BWRVK3770. This fits your rail kit directly and has a slider built into it which allows you the turning clearance you'd need. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • 5th Wheel Hitch that Fits Directly in Factory Prep Package for a 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500 Short Bed
B&W 5th wheel trailer hitch # BWRVK3770 is the only one that fits directly into the prep package on your 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500 short bed. The lowest cost option is to use Curt 16K hitch # 16516 with the adapter # C16023. That hitch uses a slide-bar jaw though so that would allow for more movement between the jaw and king pin than the dual jaw version, # C16521. But as far as a hitch that fits directly the B&W is the only option. The king pins on 5th wheel trailers are an industry...

The B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3770 referenced in your question is the only hitch model currently available that will mount directly to the factory rail kit on your 2016 Sierra 3500. This is an excellent sliding hitch that will mount directly to the factory pucks in the truck bed and give you 12 inches of travel front to back. Also note that the head of the Companion can be removed to help with installation and removal of the hitch. The head itself weighs only 74 pounds. The...

  • 5th Wheel Towing Capacity of 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with 4WD and Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch
I took a look at the owner's manual for a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and for a 4WD the capacities will depend on axle ratio, cab length and bed size. Assuming you have a 4.10 axle ratio, your GCWR (the combined weight of your truck and trailer) is listed at 21,100 lbs no matter what your other configurations are. With that 4.10 axle ratio here are the maximum fifth wheel trailer weights per the manual: - 4WD Crew Cab Long Box: 13,900 lbs - 4WD Crew Cab Standard Box: 14,000 lbs - 4WD...

The PullRite SuperGlide 5th Wheel hitch model 2900 is an 18K-rated auto-sliding hitch that fits into ISRs, or industry standard rails that sit in the short truck bed. If this is the hitch you want to use you do not need to spend more on the optional factory-installed 5th wheel rail kit in your 2017 Silverado 2500HD. You can use instead a cost-effective aftermarket installation kit that will provide the required base rails. If you do not yet own the hitch you might consider using one...

  • Will a Reese Signature Series Hitch Fit Factory Mount System in a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 Short Bed
No, unfortunately the Reese Signature Series 5th wheel trailer hitches will not fit the factory puck system in the 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 short bed. But there are hitches that will fit. I recommend the B&W Companion # BWRVK3770. It is a direct fit and it is a slider hitch for more turning clearance when towing with a flat bed truck. Another option is Curt hitch # C16669. It is also a direct fit to the factory system in your truck.

  • Is it Okay to Tow 19,600 Pound Trailer with B&W OEM Companion Slider Hitch # BWRVK3770
If you have the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3770 for your Chevy Silverado 3500 you won't have an issue towing the 5th wheel hitch you are planning to purchase. This hitch features a 20,000 pound towing weight capacity, which exceeds the 19,600 pound GVWR that you mentioned on the trailer. Even if loaded to its max 19,600 pound capacity the Companion can handle its weight, but also keep in mind that it's pretty unlikely you'll actually approach this weight in reality...

  • When Is Slider Hitch Needed when Towing Fifth Wheel Trailer with Short Bed Truck
The only time you need a slider fifth wheel hitch is when you are needing to make a tight turn. It's in these situations that normally the nose of the trailer would hit the cab of the truck. A slider hitch then moves the trailer back so that the turn can be made without interference. It can vary depending on the width of the trailer and the length of the pin box how often you'd need the slider but best option would be to just pay extra attention to the closeness of the nose of the trailer...

Most of this weight is in the slider base (about 175-lbs) but the removable head assembly weighs 74-lbs so taking this part off first makes handling this outstanding hitch a bit easier.
