Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

Once you have the post in place on the base, position the base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The RV post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

To tighten the connection between your Turnoverball hitch and the Companion, torque down the integrated drop-down bolt. This bolt runs through the crossmember of the Companion base and then down through the RV post. When you tighten the drop-down bolt, the base will be pulled closer to your truck bed, creating a more substantial connection. This, along with the wide stance of the hitch's base, helps to ensure maximum stability when you're towing.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Note: If you have a short bed truck, you may want to use the B&W Companion Slider hitch (BWRVK3400 - sold separately) instead of the standard Companion. This fifth-wheel trailer hitch, which also adapts your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch, incorporates a slider that gives you an extra 12" of fore/aft movement to ensure proper cab clearance when executing turns.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Adapts Truck - BWRVK3500 Review

Today we're going to review part number BWRVK3500. This is the B and W Companion goose neck to fifth wheel trailer hitch adapter. It is the dual jaw design. It has a 20,000pound gross towing weight capacity. This trailer hitch adapter will convert your B and W turnover ball goose neck hitch, that we do sell separately on our website, to a fifth wheel hitch, which will let you tow your fifth wheel trailer. It is a rail free design, which means this will drop right into your truck bed.

There's a post that is connected to the hitch base right down here. That is a square post which will drop into the square opening on turnover ball goose neck hitch on your truck and then you'll lock it into place like you would your goose neck ball and then you'll have a fifth wheel hitch in your trailer. Now it also has these plastic footpads, which will attach to the bottom of each base here, and as you can see it is formed to fill the truck bed corrugation to help create a better fit. Now it does have the one inch thick dual jaws here. These will provide a 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact, which will give you less rattle and more security than the slide bar jaws. So basically, right back here, I'm just going to turn it around a little bit, so you might be able to see.Right back here there's a clip and a pin, that if we pull the clip off the end of the pin that will release the handle. When you push back on this handle you'll be able to see, there it is closed, and when you push back on it, those dual jaws will open up and you're ready to back up into your fifth wheel trailer. As your kingpin comes in here, it will push on the back here and will automatically push the handle closed and wrap around the kingpin.

With it closed you can just take the pin and clip, drop it into place and that will lock it into place. Now you can also use a padlock on here, if you like. We do sell those separately. If you need extra security you can drop a padlock in there or just use this pin and clip. Now this does use a cam action latching handle that will help prevent binding.

It is simple to release even on unleveled terrain. Basically what it does is this handle will allow you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. Now sometimes when you're on uneven terrain there might be some binding that will occur in there and when you open this handle, to the open position, those jaws might still be wrapped around the kingpin, but because it is a cam action latching handle what will happen is there is no pressure because this handle is unlatched there will be no pressure on those jaws, so when you go to pull away that king pin will push open those jaws and slide out. That way even if you're on uneven terrain it won't give you any binding. A very nice feature. Now it does have a fully articulating head, which will ease hook-up and help limit chucking.

So, basically right here you can see the articulating head will pivot front to back and it will also go side to side. This head part will go side to side. It is hard to move right now because there's no weight on it. Basically it's setting, this hitch head is sitting on these pivot arms and there are polyurethane bushings right under here, so that's what will give you the movement. Now you can also get improved cab clearance with the four inches of front to back adjustment and you'll get those adjustment by these pivot arms here on the side. Basically these pivot arms, if you can see, they're sort of triangular shape, so itdepends on how youmount them to the side plates here. Now on these side plates there's holes drilled and there's about five rows of five holes, so about twenty-five different holes. So if you have the holes on your pivot arms, you'll just line that up, so you can move it front to back with about four inches of movement. And you can also turn those sort of triangular shape, turn themaround to even gain more adjustment if you need, and then also you depending on how high you bolt those holes, you can also gain three height settings to fit your application also. Basically, the hitch height adjustments go from the lowest, about16 1/4and the highest about 18 1/4. That is measured from your truck bed to the hitch head, so you can adjust that height by how you install it on here. Now a nice feature is if you go on the product page for this part number,we do have a nice diagram there that will show when this is mounted in each different position, what the dimensions you will be gaining in height and in the fore and aft movement. You will get the quiet rattle free ride because this it's riding on those polyurethane bushings. Has a nice wide stance base, as you can see, which offers the strength and stability. Again these plastic footpads will mount to the bottom to create a better fit in your truck bed. It is a very quick and simple installation.Basically this RV post, right down here, this square post, will install in the ball hole of your turn over ball goose neck hitch, and then you'll turn the handle to lock it into place and you'll be ready to go. It does have a gray powder coat steel finish, which is corrosion resistant. It is made in the U.S.A., and again this has a gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds, vertically load limit of 5,000 pounds. And again we mentioned the hitch height adjustments, anywhere from16 1/4to 18 1/4, and it comes with a limited 5 year warranty. Now just one other thing I want to show you, when you go if you want to remove this after your done using it and you want to remove it from the bed of your truck. You don't have to remove all the weight at one time. What you can do is if you pull this clip right out and then pull the pin out, pull the clip over here, pull this pin out, then what that will do is you'll be able to take just the head off the bushings. Basically if you just pullup on these handles, these handles will release underneath the bushings and you'll be able to lift this whole head off, and you'll save you some of the weight. All you'll have left is the pivot arms and the base. So it will save you some of the weight when you are remove it from your truck bed. One other thing to also look at, when you do take this hitch head off, the very bottom, if you turn this over, at the very bottom at the center, there is a grease zerk fitting and you do want to lube that with grease every once in awhile because that will lube this large nut and bolt here that gives you the side to side adjustments on the head. That should do it for the review on part number BWRVK3500. The B and W Companion goose neck to fifth wheel trailer hitch adapter with a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. .

I like that it can be removed so easily. Works well with our fifth wheel. 690674

I have had 5 B W hitches 5th wheels and Goosenecks and they are the only hitch I would buy 589131

- BWRVK3500

Love, love , love this hitch. It is easy to install and remove. Super easy to hook up 5th wheel. I highly recommend. I have had it for a year now and still works and looks as good as the day a bought it. 525496

Make sure to have two people for installation. The only reason this is a must is due to the weight of the items and safety. The installation was not bad, the only item that is worth mentioning to watch for is near the end of the installation instructions. The jaws release lever has two bolts to hold it onto the receiver plate itself. The top is a rounded head with allen wrench style fittings. Unfortunately even though it seems like the allen wrench would hold the minute you put any torque on the nut it spins. I ended up replacing both immediately before fully tightening to ensure the handle was solid in place. As both bolts have no load or weight to them this was an easy decision to make. Everything you can tell is built solid and is pure steel, this thing should not go anywhere! Also to note I have my height adjustment for the plate at the highest setting and my tonneau cover still fully covers the truck bed without touching! 602108

It has been great, no issues and still pulling my fifth wheel without any incident. I did have to adjust the plate down all the way but that was to even out the trailer angle to raise backend of camper more so as not to hit back end on anything. Easy enough if you have a torque power drill to take all the bolts off and move, then just make sure to use torque wrench again to the 80lbs required.

So far so good. The installation was really easy. I got lucky by already having the BW Gooseneck hitch in my truck when I purchased it. Knowing what I know now this feel like the best route to go. I can pull it out of my truck and have my entire bed for something else in 30 minutes. Most of my time was assembling the components, which wasn't that long 3 hours maybe. It breaks into 2 pieces so I can lift it all by myself with no problem. I have not pulled my 5th wheel yet, that will be this weekend. I will update afterward. 297041

First dealing with Erika W was great, good product knowledge and told me my product would be at my front door in 3 days - it was. I received the hitch and it took me about an hour to open up, assemble and install. Very straight forward and easy to work with solo. I have yet to connect to my 5th wheel but so far so good. Thanks Erika. 323552

- BWRVK3500

I’m very satisfied with this installation was easy best of all I didn’t lose the use of my gooseneck ball. This was a lot easier than replacing my pinbox 657183

- BWRVK3500

I decided to buy the Champion fifth wheel hitch to pull a fifth wheel camper, my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 already had a B&W goose neck hitch in it. The champion hitch allowed me to also have a fifth wheel hitch with out drilling and mounting more weight to the truck. The instructions for assembly were clear and easy to follow making the assembly of the hitch easy. The hitch fit snug and there is no play in it. The 26' fifth wheel camper pulled nicely, no surging or swaying. 696882

- BWRVK3500

This product stood up exactly as promised. Easy to install, take your time get your measurement first it will be easier on you in the long run. Instructions where easy to understand but if you get confused you can find video's online if that is easier. Also at the angle I was at, it released very easy and no binding. Very easy to install and operate. The big plus is when your done with hauling, its easy to take out and have the back of your truck bed back to normal. 191199

- BWRVK3500

The trailer hitch was delivered on time and was very easy to assemble. It took about one hour 522847

- BWRVK3500

I pull a 14' goose neck dump trailer and a 10,500 lb fifth wheel camper with a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. Both are obviously all the truck should handle anyways but I would never try it with a different hitch. There's no play, none, in either even after nine years with the gooseneck receiver and one year with the fifth wheel companion. I travel for work and have pulled the camper 6.5 hours. 10,500 lbs on a bw hitch in your bed is more safe than 5000lb on s tail receiver no doubt. Worth every penny. 434191

- BWRVK3500

Finally got it installed last night. Attached is a picture. 602311

- BWRVK3500

Awesome product. Best of both fifth and goose put together about time. No annoying rails on my trucks bed, just remove fifth wheel flip gosse over and hides in hole within minutes. 2016 350 Ram. 38' 5R no problem nice setup. 313531

- BWRVK3500

I appreciated advice when ordering and decided on the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailed Hitch Adapter. Delivery was super fast. I ordered after 5:00 pm on Thursday and the package was in front of the garage by noon on Friday. My wife said that was faster than Amazon! Instructions were detailed well, so after purchasing a torque wrench, I was good to go. I watched a video also, as being from Missouri, I have to be showed! The quality seems to be great. By Saturday noon, I was able to hook up to our 5th wheel RV. Thanks so much! 483256

Easy assembly, clear directions. 802675

Perfect. No better way to describe. 802270

- BWRVK3500

So far so good, installation went well. Delivery was quicker than advertised. We are going next week to pick up fifth wheel. Looks and acts like another quality product from the heartland of America produced by [email protected] I'm positive it will provide us years of reliable use and I can still pull it out quick to pull livestock and flatbed trailers. 791831

- BWRVK3500

Excellent product with high quality. Fast delivery and accurate website information allowed for easy purchase. Easy to install with just one person. Plan to pull my new 2020 Grand Design Momentum 395m 5th wheel. Retirement here I come. :) Picture gave error and would not up load. 791371

- BWRVK3500

I love it! I would buy one for every truck I have a goose neck in so I wouldn't have to rotate it between vehicles but for the price I can't afford that but definitely more than well worth the initial investment! Million times better than rails... 787040

- BWRVK3500

I have pulled a 18000 lb toy hauler for 10000 miles and have not had a single problem. 745610

- BWRVK3500

Haven't took it out of the box yet, but shipping was super fast. Ordered it Tuesday late afternoon and received it on Thursday. Will buy again from this company if I need anything else in the future. 723379

- BWRVK3500

This hitch is very heavy duty and well built. It is easy to assemble, it took my wife and I about an hour and a half. 705602

- BWRVK3500

The companion was purchased because the unit is adjustable. For different needs. The 2019 f250 Ford pick up has huge dimensions from earlier models. The companion compensated for these differences. I use it for the rv and sometimes for the livestock trailers as well. 704968

It sounds like you have the B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch, part # BWRVK3500, that fits into the B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. I recommend using the sliding hitch # BWRVK3400 which uses base # BWRVB3405 with the same hitch head as the fixed hitch. You will simply need the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit - 30,000 lbs # BWGNRK1314 for your truck. I also recommend...

  • Can a B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch from a Chevy Silverado Fit a 2018 Ram 3500 Long Bed
The part number you provided, which in our system is # BWRVB3500, is just the replacement base for the standard Companion hitch which is # BWRVK3500. If they are selling just the base then you will also need the head which is # BWRVC3006. Your 2018 Ram 3500 would also need to have a B&W gooseneck hitch installed to use the Companion. For your truck it is # BWGNRK1314. If you have the factory installed gooseneck hitch then the Companion hitch and base listed above will not fit. Instead...

  • How To Use a B&W Companion 5th Wheel Adapter with Square Post On a 2020 Chevy Silevrado 3500
In order to use the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter part # BWRVK3500 or part # BWRVK3400 on a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 you have a few options depending on if the truck has the factory prep package. The factory prep package is composed of a singular center hole for the gooseneck hitch ball and then four pucks on the outer perimeter. If this is what you have then what you need is the Replacement Base for B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # BWRVB3710...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Options for 2018 Ford F-250 with Gooseneck Hitch
If the gooseneck hitch you have in the bed of your 2018 Ford F-250 is a B and W hitch then the correct fifth wheel hitch you'd need is the Companion part # BWRVK3500 if you have a long bed. This fits the gooseneck hitch ball and gives you a fifth wheel hitch that will work well for you. If instead you have a short bed and need a slider hitch for turning clearance you'd want the part # BWRVK3400. If instead you see 4 pucks around the gooseneck ball that look like they were meant to have...

  • Can the Head Unit of the B&W Companion Hitch Be Used on a Base for Pucks on a 2017 Ram 2500/3500
Yes! The head unit of your B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3500 is part # BWRVC3006. When combined with the Slider Base # BWRVB3670 this will give you the sliding hitch # BWRVK3670 for a short bed and when you combine it with the Base # BWRVB3600 it will give you the stationary hitch # BWRVK3600 for a long bed. Both the sliding base # BWRVB3670 and the stationary base # BWRVB3600 install in the puck system on your 2017 Ram 2500/3500 instead of the center gooseneck hitch ball receiver.

  • Difference Between B&W RVB and RVK 3500 5th Wheel Hitch Parts
The RVB3500 (our part # BWRVB3500) that you referenced is simply the replacement base assembly for the full B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3500. I'm not quite sure what part you are referring to when you listed RVA as I wasn't able to cross-reference it to anything. The Companion 5th Wheel Hitch is an excellent choice for your Silverado and is considered by many to be one of the best hitch's on the market. This is largely due to its overall construction that includes robust 1...

  • Could BakFlip Tonneau Cover Close Over B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch in 2019 Ford F-250
We do install fifth wheel hitches and rail kits here at our location in Wentzville, MO and it is possible a BakFlip Tonneau can fit over a fifth wheel hitch but the hitch would need to have a handle that does not point up like the B and W Companion part # BWRVK3500. To install this in your 2019 Ford F-250 long bed you'd need the rail kit part # BWGNRK1116. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. In case you didn't have the tonneau already the correct part...

  • What is the Difference Between the B&W Companion OEM and B&W Companion Adapter
There are two different types of B&W Companion 5th wheel trailer hitches. There is a Companion Adapter like part # BWRVK3500 and a Companion OEM like part # BWRVK3300. The Companion Adapter installs into a B&W gooseneck trailer hitch via a single connection point whereas the Companion OEM install into the factory puck system via four mounting points. • How to Determine Which Arm Position to Use for B&W Companion Hitch
I attached a chart that has all of the arm positions explained for the B and W Companion Hitch part # BWRVK3500 that you have. The horizontal position really comes down to cab clearance. Most people are find with the arms located forward which allows the trailer to sit closer to the cab of the truck. But some people need more turning clearance so the rearward-most position works best for them.

  • Recommended Way to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer Using a B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch
The best fifth wheel hitch to use with the B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch is the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500. That's exactly what it's designed for. However, it's 16-1/4 inches from the bed of the truck. Another option that may work for you is the B&W Companion for Flatbed Trucks # BWRVK3050. The hitch sits about 10-1/2 inches from the truck bed. With an adapter that allows the trailer to sit level it's likely to be very close to the bed rails. You want at the very least 6 inches...

  • How to Determine if B and W Companion Slider Hitch will Allow Tool Box to Fit In Front
I spoke to my contact at B and W and she verified that from the center of where your gooseneck ball attaches to the front of the B and W Companion Slider Gooseneck to 5th Wheel Slider part # BWRVK3400 measures 15 inches. So if you were to measure from the center of your gooseneck ball forward 15 inches you would know if this would interfere with your toolbox. You should also note that if your tool box sticks up higher than the bed rails of your truck you might see interference while...

  • How to Determine B&W Companion Hitch Height and Position in Bed of 2014 Ram 2500 Long Bed
To find out where the socket post lies in regard to the rear axle, have a helper stand in the truck bed and hold a broomstick in the gooseneck hitch with the ball removed. You can stand beside the truck, and get a good idea of how far forward of the axle center line the hitch ball will be. Because you've got a long bed, you won't have any worries about clearance between the rear of the truck cab and the front of the fifth wheel. Use the setting that places the fifth wheel hitch head...

  • How to Pick Hitch Height Setting for B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch
You will want the hitch to be set at the height that 1) allows the trailer to be level, and 2) allows you a minimum of 6 inches between the bottom of the trailer loft and the top of the bed rails. The fifth wheel hitches offer several inches of up and down adjustment to help accomplish this. Many pin boxes are also height adjustable. To do this you will want to measure from the top of your truck bed floor to the ground and then measure from the plate of the pin box on the trailer down...

The B&W Companion 5th wheel hitches that mount in their under-bed gooseneck installation kit are fixed-type hitch part # BWRVK3500 and slider-type hitch part # BWRVK3400. The bed length of your 2012 Ram will determine which hitch you need. The gooseneck hitch/5th wheel install kit that fits the 2012 Ram 1500 with 8-foot bed is part # BWGNRK1309-5W. This will work perfectly with the Companion. If you wish to confirm your truck series and bed length I will be glad to re-confirm compatibility...

  • Why Can't a B&W Companion Be Used with a B&W Turnoverball Trailer Hitch
The B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter part # BWRVK3500 is not compatible with any rotating pin box which includes your Lippert Turning Point and the Reese Sidewinder. The reason for this is because the mounting point of the B&W Companion will allow for too much movement which could then damage the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch.

  • Difference Between B&W Companion # BWRVK3500 and # BWRVK3300
The primary difference between the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500 and the BWRVK3300 referenced in your question is how they will actually mount to the truck bed. The B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500 is a fantastic hitch that will mount to your truck bed using a vehicle specific B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. For example, if your 2011 Chevy Silverado has an 8 foot bed, you will just need the Gooseneck Installation Rails # BWGNRK1007-5W. The great thing about this system...

  • Recommended Lube Plate for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
For your B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3500 and MOR/ryde Pin Box, you can certainly use the larger diameter Lube Plate # RP83001. This 12 inch diameter plate will work just fine on higher capacity hitches like your B&W and there will not be any issues with edges of the plate extending beyond the skid plate. As you mentioned in your question, the head on the B&W hitch is large enough to accommodate the 12 inch plate. This will indeed allow for more surface area for lubrication...

But even that will depend on the truck and trailer setup. I attached a chart that has all of the pivot arm positions.
