Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the B&W Companion Slider gooseneck to fifth wheel trailer hitch adapter offering the dual jaws and a 20,000 pound capacity. The part number is BWRVK3400-5W. The B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch is gonna be the perfect solution to have really the best of both worlds. This is designed to work with the B&W gooseneck. So when not in use, we can have it completely empty and open bed. If we want to haul a gooseneck trailer, we can flip that ball over, be able to connect to that.

But in the need that we need to haul our fifth wheel camper, this is easily gonna slide in and it bolts right down to that underbed gooseneck that you've already got installed. The biggest advantage I see to this particular type of a slider versus other ones available out there on the market is just the way it's gonna arrive to you. When you get it, your base is gonna be completely assembled. You'll have to make a few adjustments just on the keepers, the polyurethane keepers that run down the bottom. But everything is square from the factory. That means when we go from the locked to the unlocked position, you see it take little to no effort to get this moving.

As compared to other setups that you're base isn't gonna come already assembled and already squared up, can really be a struggle to get everything in line to where it actually will move freely and even then, sometimes it requires the camper to move it. Now if you're looking at a slider setup, it's probably because you have a situation similar to this. You've got a short bed truck and you're worried about the camper making contact with the cab. It's a very real concern. It happen quite a bit.

That's why these are around. With the Companion, you can see that gives us a full 12" of travel. That's some of the longest travel you're gonna get out of any type of slider hitch, really helps to move that camper further back from the rear of the vehicle, reducing the risk of any cab/camper contact. Another thing I really like about the Companion system is the lever to operate the slide. You can see it sticks up here nice and high. It's gonna be easily accessible, even if you're outside of the truck.

You lift that up into that unlocked position. Then from that point, once you pull away from your camper, once it gets into the locked position, our arm's automatically gonna come down so we have no pins, no release mechanisms through the lever or anything like that. It's a really good, simple system to use and you'll see coming forward, it's gonna work just the same way. The handle's also nice and long. Again, easily accessible from outside of the vehicle. You do have a pin and clip here to secure it in place. That can also be replaced with a lock with a 1/4" diameter you can pass that down through there. So if you don't want the pin, you can lock your camper to your Companion and that just is gonna slide forward, opening those jaws up. Then in the open position, we'll take our Mack king pin here. You can see that's gonna slide in place and with a little bit of force, that'll bring our lever right back to the closed position. That has us nice and secure. You see that has the 360 fit.So we're not just grabbing it on the backside, which can eventually just leave the flat spotting of your king pin. That's gonna hold it all the way around, front, back, side to side. Now with that limited movement that's really gonna help reduce some of that chucking and some of the trailer effects that you feel in your truck, you're gonna see that one some of the lesser quality fifth wheels on the market. Now in the maneuvering position or the rearward position, this is just gonna be your slow speed stuff. You certainly don't want to travel down the highway with it slid back. To travel, we're gonna slide it forward. But with the ease of access to the slider, I think you're gonna be a lot more likely to actually move it back so you can get your maneuvering done rather than having to go through several steps to get it to slide back, which you might not want to do. Now the head of our gooseneck is also gonna be fully articulating. So like most goosenecks, it has the tip front and back. But that side to side is really key for when you're trying to hook up or unhook from your camper onto uneven surfaces. If you get a little bit of a pitch one side or the other, those lower quality fifth wheel don't really like to release or accept that king pin. Now the Companion's gonna offer heavy duty steel construction made right here in the United States. They've got the unique gray powder coat finish, really helps it stand out from a lot of the competitors out there on the market. With that heavy duty construction, we're gonna get a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's gonna be the maximum weight that we'd want to haul and it's gonna give us a 5,000 pound king pin weight. So that's the maximum downward force we can put on top of our hitch. Of course, you do want to check your truck's owner's manual. Make sure it's capable of those types of weights. If not, just go up whichever numbers are the lowest. Now with comparing this slide to other sliders out there on the market, I think the quality in construction is very, very high. Not saying the other sliders aren't made well. I just like the way this one comes and the way it's put together. The way this thing slides forward and back really alleviates a lot of headaches. I like the quality of material, but with that being said, heavy duty material means that it's gonna be pretty heavy. So this is gonna take two guys probably to get it in and out of the truck. I like the square pin design that we have out of the Companion. When that square peg goes down into that gooseneck socket, it prevents any of the turning. Now when comparing that to some of the competitors that have the round peg, movement could be a little bit more of an issue. This is also gonna have the greatest travel of any of the sliders out there on the market. You'll see the polyurethane strips in conjunction with that square peg we talked about. It's gonna be pressed firmly down against the bed of the truck, again, resisting any rotation. Now going with the slider style like the companion or really any of its competitors, it's a pretty expensive decision to make. But based on the use that we've had here and the customer response that we've had on this setup, it's well worth the investment. Its ease of use really complements driving and trailoring, makes it a little bit easier on you so you're not in and out of the truck bed near as often. Now to connect the Companion to your gooseneck, you're gonna see the oblong hole here and inside, we have a retainer. We're gonna place that right down in the hole for the shank of our gooseneck ball. Place the pin through just by releasing our handle and then as we tighten the bolt on the top, you'll see how that's gonna draw that up and it's gonna pull the companion firmly down against the bed of the vehicle. Now as we tighten down that bolt, you can see our full length strips here that are designed to fit down in the corrugation of the truck. That's gonna prevent any twisting or any movement as we travel. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we can get your Companion put down in position.Remember, we're gonna place our square peg here right down in the hole for our gooseneck ball. Now once we have the Companion in place and squared up, we want to take that polyurethane. We're gonna slide, you can see, right over against the rim of the truck. Want to make sure it stays fully seated down on the bottom. Once we have that done on the front and the back, use a 7/16 and tighten down our bolts. So once we have our polyurethane strips tightened down, we'll release the pin, allowing that 5/8 pin to come in through the catch and then it's just a matter of torquing it down to the specifications listed. Another nice feature the companion offers is full adjustability up and down. We can go from 17, 18, or 19" of pin height and we can adjust forward and back. So by placing our arms in this position, kind of with the angle going forward, that's gonna put us about one inch ahead of our post or our securing mechanism. By putting these in the other way, we're gonna be able 3" behind.Since this is a short bed application, we're gonna set it up so that we're gonna have a little extra room between the cab and the camper. For the lowest setting, I'll use the bottom and middle hole. The middle setting, we'll use the second from the bottom and second from the top and our highest setting's gonna use the top hole and the third one down. You'll use the 1/2" by 2" bolt, want to split the ring lock washer on there, slide it through the hole, and thread it in position. Now we're gonna use four bolts for each arm. Then we can torque all four of these down to the specifications listed in the instructions. Now once we have our arms in place, we'll put on our leveling kit. Now the leveling kit's just gonna be a spring. We'll fit that right to our arm using the pressure clip and we want that to be set at the top of our spring about a half inch below the bottom of our rubber there. Typically, you just use a hammer and kind of get it started, knocked on there, like that.Looks like it crept down a little bit. So we'll just kind of tap it up. There. That should be good. Now the spring's gonna rest right up against the head. So even when not in use, it's gonna help hold that head level. So if you need to connect to your trailer, you won't have to worry about your head being tilted the wrong direction. Now on top of each of our arms, you'll see we have polyurethane bushings. So as our head sits on there and rotates forward and back, you're gonna have to worry about noise and this is also gonna soften the impact of our camper against our truck. Now for our head, you want to lift up on the two handles with the pins removed. We'll place that right down and over. You want to wiggle that down in position until you see your arms drop down just like that, indicating that your secure. Then we'll slide our pins through. Those will be secured with our provided clips. Now the last thing we'll need to do is just get our handle installed. To do that, we'll just remove our pin and clip here, slide our handle in. It's going to align with the two holes furthest in and place through one of our button head bolts there. Locking flange nut on the other side. Get those started. Then tighten down. For the top here, we'll use a 7/32, the bottom, a 9/16. Pin and clip back in there. The handle allows us to easily open the dual jaws. Then as the king pin enters, it's gonna press the lever right here on the front, helping to close it. That's gonna complete our look at the B&W Companion fifth wheel slider.

Just started 5th wheel camping and wanted a hitch that when removed left my truck box bare. I also talked to alot of people who talked about clunking and noise from their hitch while towing. I bought a 2013 32' Coachman which is pushing my 2009 F150 to its max. When pulling with this hitch it feels like the truck and trailer are one unit. No noise and no slop between the two units. I made a lifting pin that goes into the jaws and lifts it out with a comealong hooked to a rafter support in my garage. I then put it onto a wheel cart I made. No heavy lifting and one person can do it all. I've had one teflon foot fall of the hitch and the service was amazing no questions, no pictures, and no waiting. New piece was sent right away. Anyone who tows now and has looked at the hit are very impressed. I would definitly recomend this hitch to everyone. 592596

Every thing has been working good. Seems to take a good jolt to get it to slide with the trailer attached. Still a great product

I've had this for about a year. Only have about 2,000 miles of use with a 13,000 lbs 5th wheel travel trailer. It is still like new. Jaws are tight, no rattles with or without the trailer attached. I use a nylon guide plate, to keep things clean. The only issue is the slider will not unlatch from the locked position with the trailer attached. Unlatch and slides fine when not loaded. Just haven't made the time to talk to B&W about this. The base is a heavy bugger, and fits snug in the receptical. I've lifted it in and out myself, but not a smart idea. Overall I would buy again. For our use, where we need the whole bed the majority of time it is an easy solution. 608616

Youll want to make sure that the slider rails are lubricated. Also keep in mind that if the truck and trailer are at different angles and theres a lot of pressure placed on the sliding mechanism, it can bind.

A year later, and it still works the same. Slider still doesnt work. but havent needed it. One thing I have learned is to make sure the lug from the attachment is lubricated before placed into the receiver. After about 8 months of being in the bed, I tried to remove it. Whoah! That was a son of a gun. Finally got it to break free, and then it lifted out. both the lug of the companion hitch, and the receiver of the B&W are nicely powder coated. that powder coating locked together. Nothing patience and a pry bar couldnt fix. But I dont want a repeat. Over all, I may look at something easier for our next travel season.

Awesome hitch. Heavy, but I install it alone with my cherry picker. I have a roll n lock bed cover and it closes over the base with the 5th wheel removed. Easy to slide for tight spots with my short bed F350. 552591

This is a must for a short bed truck!!! I bought this hitch for my 3/4 ton duramax to pull my 29’ 5th wheels camper. Shortly after, I pulled it about 2500 miles round trip. It functions and pulls perfectly. Slide it back for more clearance when backing into camping spots without worry of crushing a cab corner. I like the fact that it can be removed from my bed completely without leaving rails in the way. I gave it 4 stars only because it seems to be described more like it is really light and easy to handle and remove. Although it can be done with two people, the slider version is pretty heavy and I used a hoist or tractor the majority of the time to remove it. I would venture to say that the static version would be much lighter. Also bought the flatbed version of the companion that functions exactly like this hitch with the B&W turn over ball for my 1 ton flatbed. This hitch is great. Light weight and easy for one person to load and unload, has the same head that will interchange between bases. This is a great product and the only 5th wheel hitch I will have. 477200

The hitch works great and the slider has got me in and out of a couple of tight places that I have found myself in. The hitch is heavy and takes up a lot of real estate in my bed but I don’t think that’s a bad thing when pulling a 15k 40ft 5th wheel. Easy to operate and locks up tight and secure. Great product as expected. 765916

Easy install, just heavy for one person without a lift. I used a couple of 2x4’s and slid it up into the truck and into the goose neck hitch. Have not used yet waiting for spring to pickup our RV trailer at the dealership. 751639

This is a solid piece of equipment. It is straightforward to use and has a “safety” pin to help verify the jaws are locked. My in-laws have a super glide and it doesn’t have a safety pin. The manual slide action is perfect. I have a newer 5th wheel with the rounded nose, I only need to slide when maneuvering in tight quarters. It is easy to see that the jaws are locked. I have not experienced any chucking etc. The jaws wrap around the pin and hold it on all sides. 749134

  • How Pick Arm Location for B and W Companion Hitch for 2019 Ford F-250 with Factory Rail Kit
Since you have a 2019 Ford F-250 short bed with the factory rail kit the correct B and W Companion Slider hitch is the # BWRVK3370 and the # BWRVK3400-5W you referenced. I attached a picture that explains all of the arm location positions for you to check out. I'd go with the rear most position since you have a short bed truck. It gives you better clearance but the king pin will still be carried 1 inch in front of the truck's rear axle.

Since you already have the factory rail kit already installed on your Silverado the B&W Companion you will need is part # BWRVK3770 for a 6-1/2 foot bed, or part # BWRVK3700 for an 8 foot bed. Even though the head unit, part # BWRVC3006, is the same for your current Companion and either of these options, it would be easier...

  • Will B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch Fit Under Tonneau Cover on 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500
While we have not tested the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3400-5W and BAKFlip MX4 Hard Tonneau Cover # BAK48121 together on a short bed 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500, there are things we can look at to give you a good idea of compatibility. The first thing to note is that the Companion - which will be mounted on Custom Underbed Installation Kit # BWGNRK1016-5W - has three hitch height settings, with the lowest being 17 inches. We also know the BAKFlip MX4 will sit approximately...

  • Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch Options for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch
A sliding hitch is necessary for a short bed truck if you don't have a Sidewinder style rotating pin box to give you the turning clearance you need so your trailer doesn't make contact with the cab of your truck. Although the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W is the one of the best options for a slider, you are correct that you do have other options. The biggest issue is that you can't have 5th wheel rails and your gooseneck installed at the same time due to the mounting locations,...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Clean Bed Once Removed on a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short Bed
If you are wanting to keep the bed of your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 clean then I highly recommend using the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W because it mounts in the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1059-5W. Instead of having bed rails in the bed of your truck you just have the gooseneck hitch ball receiver and safety chain loops as you can see in the attached photo. The Companion is made right here in the USA, has a 20,000 lb weight capacity (which is more than your pickup), 17" - 19" of height...

  • Underbed Fifth Wheel/Gooseneck Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Ford F-250 Short Bed
We can help you with selecting an underbed fifth wheel/gooseneck kit for your 2018 Ford F-250 short bed but the only place to get the factory in-bed rail kit is through Ford. Reese use to sell it aftermarket but now it's only available through Ford. Since that route is very expensive a different option you may prefer that I recommend is the B and W Turnoverball Base Rail/Gooseneck Hitch part # BWGNRK1116-5W and the slider Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400-5W. This gives you basically...

From the center of the post that installs in your B&W Gooseneck Hitch to the forwardmost (towards your cab) part of the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W that you referenced is 15". You'd have to measure forward 15 inches towards the front of the cab from the center of the gooseneck post where this installs to know if you'd have clearance.

  • Can a Reese Revolution Pin Box be Used with a B and W Companion Slider Hitch
You can lock out the Reese Revolution and use it like a standard pin box and you would be fine to use it with your B and W Slider Companion part # BWRVK3400-5W. You will first need to make sure the wedge at the bottom of the Revolution is removed so it can pivot at the hitch. Then you will look under the turret. There will be 2 bolts or just bolt holes. These holes are for two 3/4 inch grade 5 bolts and nuts and will prevent the turret from rotating. Take a look at the instructions I...

  • Which B and W Companion Slider Hitch Fits 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500
The Companion slider hitch for Turnoverballs goosenecks had a revision where they changed the part number to RVK3405 which increased it's capacities. We currently offer that hitch as part # BWRVK3400-5W like you referenced but we kept the older part number just to make it easier on our end. This hitch will work well with the Turnoverball hitch you have installed in your 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD.

I reached out to my contact at B&W who confirmed this so you will be adding about 425 lbs to your pickup. The Companion is considered by many to be the single best option for a fifth wheel hitch, and for evidence you can take a look at the over 350 reviews on our site; almost all of which are 5 stars. • What Truck Bed Liners Can be Used with B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitches
I checked with B&W and with the Companion hitch # BWRVK3500-5W you would either need to remove the bedliner or trim it in the footprint of the entire base so it will have direct contact with the bed. The reason for this is because a slide-in bedliner can move around some and you do not want that happening when towing a 5th wheel trailer! I linked a video review of the Companion for you. If you wanted to remove the entire bedliner and go with a spray in one instead that might be the better...
