Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the B&W Companion Slider gooseneck to fifth wheel trailer hitch adapter offering the dual jaws and a 20,000 pound capacity. The part number is BWRVK3400-5W. The B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch is gonna be the perfect solution to have really the best of both worlds. This is designed to work with the B&W gooseneck. So when not in use, we can have it completely empty and open bed. If we want to haul a gooseneck trailer, we can flip that ball over, be able to connect to that.

But in the need that we need to haul our fifth wheel camper, this is easily gonna slide in and it bolts right down to that underbed gooseneck that you've already got installed. The biggest advantage I see to this particular type of a slider versus other ones available out there on the market is just the way it's gonna arrive to you. When you get it, your base is gonna be completely assembled. You'll have to make a few adjustments just on the keepers, the polyurethane keepers that run down the bottom. But everything is square from the factory. That means when we go from the locked to the unlocked position, you see it take little to no effort to get this moving.

As compared to other setups that you're base isn't gonna come already assembled and already squared up, can really be a struggle to get everything in line to where it actually will move freely and even then, sometimes it requires the camper to move it. Now if you're looking at a slider setup, it's probably because you have a situation similar to this. You've got a short bed truck and you're worried about the camper making contact with the cab. It's a very real concern. It happen quite a bit.

That's why these are around. With the Companion, you can see that gives us a full 12" of travel. That's some of the longest travel you're gonna get out of any type of slider hitch, really helps to move that camper further back from the rear of the vehicle, reducing the risk of any cab/camper contact. Another thing I really like about the Companion system is the lever to operate the slide. You can see it sticks up here nice and high. It's gonna be easily accessible, even if you're outside of the truck.

You lift that up into that unlocked position. Then from that point, once you pull away from your camper, once it gets into the locked position, our arm's automatically gonna come down so we have no pins, no release mechanisms through the lever or anything like that. It's a really good, simple system to use and you'll see coming forward, it's gonna work just the same way. The handle's also nice and long. Again, easily accessible from outside of the vehicle. You do have a pin and clip here to secure it in place. That can also be replaced with a lock with a 1/4" diameter you can pass that down through there. So if you don't want the pin, you can lock your camper to your Companion and that just is gonna slide forward, opening those jaws up. Then in the open position, we'll take our Mack king pin here. You can see that's gonna slide in place and with a little bit of force, that'll bring our lever right back to the closed position. That has us nice and secure. You see that has the 360 fit.So we're not just grabbing it on the backside, which can eventually just leave the flat spotting of your king pin. That's gonna hold it all the way around, front, back, side to side. Now with that limited movement that's really gonna help reduce some of that chucking and some of the trailer effects that you feel in your truck, you're gonna see that one some of the lesser quality fifth wheels on the market. Now in the maneuvering position or the rearward position, this is just gonna be your slow speed stuff. You certainly don't want to travel down the highway with it slid back. To travel, we're gonna slide it forward. But with the ease of access to the slider, I think you're gonna be a lot more likely to actually move it back so you can get your maneuvering done rather than having to go through several steps to get it to slide back, which you might not want to do. Now the head of our gooseneck is also gonna be fully articulating. So like most goosenecks, it has the tip front and back. But that side to side is really key for when you're trying to hook up or unhook from your camper onto uneven surfaces. If you get a little bit of a pitch one side or the other, those lower quality fifth wheel don't really like to release or accept that king pin. Now the Companion's gonna offer heavy duty steel construction made right here in the United States. They've got the unique gray powder coat finish, really helps it stand out from a lot of the competitors out there on the market. With that heavy duty construction, we're gonna get a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's gonna be the maximum weight that we'd want to haul and it's gonna give us a 5,000 pound king pin weight. So that's the maximum downward force we can put on top of our hitch. Of course, you do want to check your truck's owner's manual. Make sure it's capable of those types of weights. If not, just go up whichever numbers are the lowest. Now with comparing this slide to other sliders out there on the market, I think the quality in construction is very, very high. Not saying the other sliders aren't made well. I just like the way this one comes and the way it's put together. The way this thing slides forward and back really alleviates a lot of headaches. I like the quality of material, but with that being said, heavy duty material means that it's gonna be pretty heavy. So this is gonna take two guys probably to get it in and out of the truck. I like the square pin design that we have out of the Companion. When that square peg goes down into that gooseneck socket, it prevents any of the turning. Now when comparing that to some of the competitors that have the round peg, movement could be a little bit more of an issue. This is also gonna have the greatest travel of any of the sliders out there on the market. You'll see the polyurethane strips in conjunction with that square peg we talked about. It's gonna be pressed firmly down against the bed of the truck, again, resisting any rotation. Now going with the slider style like the companion or really any of its competitors, it's a pretty expensive decision to make. But based on the use that we've had here and the customer response that we've had on this setup, it's well worth the investment. Its ease of use really complements driving and trailoring, makes it a little bit easier on you so you're not in and out of the truck bed near as often. Now to connect the Companion to your gooseneck, you're gonna see the oblong hole here and inside, we have a retainer. We're gonna place that right down in the hole for the shank of our gooseneck ball. Place the pin through just by releasing our handle and then as we tighten the bolt on the top, you'll see how that's gonna draw that up and it's gonna pull the companion firmly down against the bed of the vehicle. Now as we tighten down that bolt, you can see our full length strips here that are designed to fit down in the corrugation of the truck. That's gonna prevent any twisting or any movement as we travel. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we can get your Companion put down in position.Remember, we're gonna place our square peg here right down in the hole for our gooseneck ball. Now once we have the Companion in place and squared up, we want to take that polyurethane. We're gonna slide, you can see, right over against the rim of the truck. Want to make sure it stays fully seated down on the bottom. Once we have that done on the front and the back, use a 7/16 and tighten down our bolts. So once we have our polyurethane strips tightened down, we'll release the pin, allowing that 5/8 pin to come in through the catch and then it's just a matter of torquing it down to the specifications listed. Another nice feature the companion offers is full adjustability up and down. We can go from 17, 18, or 19" of pin height and we can adjust forward and back. So by placing our arms in this position, kind of with the angle going forward, that's gonna put us about one inch ahead of our post or our securing mechanism. By putting these in the other way, we're gonna be able 3" behind.Since this is a short bed application, we're gonna set it up so that we're gonna have a little extra room between the cab and the camper. For the lowest setting, I'll use the bottom and middle hole. The middle setting, we'll use the second from the bottom and second from the top and our highest setting's gonna use the top hole and the third one down. You'll use the 1/2" by 2" bolt, want to split the ring lock washer on there, slide it through the hole, and thread it in position. Now we're gonna use four bolts for each arm. Then we can torque all four of these down to the specifications listed in the instructions. Now once we have our arms in place, we'll put on our leveling kit. Now the leveling kit's just gonna be a spring. We'll fit that right to our arm using the pressure clip and we want that to be set at the top of our spring about a half inch below the bottom of our rubber there. Typically, you just use a hammer and kind of get it started, knocked on there, like that.Looks like it crept down a little bit. So we'll just kind of tap it up. There. That should be good. Now the spring's gonna rest right up against the head. So even when not in use, it's gonna help hold that head level. So if you need to connect to your trailer, you won't have to worry about your head being tilted the wrong direction. Now on top of each of our arms, you'll see we have polyurethane bushings. So as our head sits on there and rotates forward and back, you're gonna have to worry about noise and this is also gonna soften the impact of our camper against our truck. Now for our head, you want to lift up on the two handles with the pins removed. We'll place that right down and over. You want to wiggle that down in position until you see your arms drop down just like that, indicating that your secure. Then we'll slide our pins through. Those will be secured with our provided clips. Now the last thing we'll need to do is just get our handle installed. To do that, we'll just remove our pin and clip here, slide our handle in. It's going to align with the two holes furthest in and place through one of our button head bolts there. Locking flange nut on the other side. Get those started. Then tighten down. For the top here, we'll use a 7/32, the bottom, a 9/16. Pin and clip back in there. The handle allows us to easily open the dual jaws. Then as the king pin enters, it's gonna press the lever right here on the front, helping to close it. That's gonna complete our look at the B&W Companion fifth wheel slider.

This is a must for a short bed truck!!! I bought this hitch for my 3/4 ton duramax to pull my 29’ 5th wheels camper. Shortly after, I pulled it about 2500 miles round trip. It functions and pulls perfectly. Slide it back for more clearance when backing into camping spots without worry of crushing a cab corner. I like the fact that it can be removed from my bed completely without leaving rails in the way. I gave it 4 stars only because it seems to be described more like it is really light and easy to handle and remove. Although it can be done with two people, the slider version is pretty heavy and I used a hoist or tractor the majority of the time to remove it. I would venture to say that the static version would be much lighter. Also bought the flatbed version of the companion that functions exactly like this hitch with the B&W turn over ball for my 1 ton flatbed. This hitch is great. Light weight and easy for one person to load and unload, has the same head that will interchange between bases. This is a great product and the only 5th wheel hitch I will have. 477200

This hitch is one fine piece of equipment. Instructions were perfectly detailed and if that's not enough there are videos to guide you. Installed in 4 hours with no problems. Haven't gone anywhere yet but did hook up to camper and was impressed. 2017 Ram 2500 Short Bed 486162

Wow, has it been a year already! First I want to thank the great folks at etrailer for steering me in the right direction with the Companion 5th wheel hitch. It has worked as advertised. It was fairly easy to install (not a one person job) in the truck. the hitch is sturdy, quiet, and gives a great pull on a 35 foot Grand Design Reflection 311BHS. The slider makes backing into some tight spots a lot easier than I expected. Every month I follow the etrailer and B&W recommendation for maintenance, takes about 5 minutes and we're ready to go again. 488200

Works great. Love the slide feature. Let's me move the clack back so I can fuel up the generator without needing to unhook. Coach just floates behind truck with this hitch. Super simple to hookup and unhook as well. 336963

Hitch worked awsome, it made a huge difference pulling trailer. The ride was a lot smoother than the ball reciever I used to have. I would highly recommend this reciever. The only down fall with it was trying to take it out at the end of season...dirt gets down in the attachment to the truck and it jammed in the reciever, it was a bear to get out 474351

Great hitch. Fit was perfect, easy to use and everything stays tight and secure. I probably did not need the slide hitch option because of the design of the rv we purchased, but better to have it and not need it. I paid a local shop to drill the hole in the bed for the frame mounted bracket just so it was a clean cut. 474120

The hitch works great and seems to be solid when towing my 36' toy hauler the only trouble I had was it was hard to slide at first but the staff at e-trailer solved the problem by telling me to loosen the draw bolt to 65 foot pounds all in all I love the 5th wheel slider from b&w 240459

Works great and I feel safe towing with this hitch. The only problem is the weight. It's heavy when removing, takes two people or a front end loader. It is nice not having the rails in the bed of the truck when not installed. If I had to do it over I would purchase again. 446173

Works great! Have had it for a year now and have used it quite a few times. Getting it out of the gooseneck hitch can be somewhat of a bear, hence the 4 star rating. Otherwise, I would have given it a 5 477277

Hitch is built strong, with many features to make it reliable. Is a heavy duty one which means it's heavy but can easy install and remove by myself with the use of a couple straps and a chain hoist. 434204

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 and I currently tow a 36 ft. 5th wheel that weighs in about 15,000 loaded. This hitch is overkill for me on the tow rating but that's what I wanted. I have been towing for years and this is my third hitch and I don't want to have to think twice about the hitch when I'm climbing and descending mountain passes. I live in Washington state and I go all over the Pacific Northwest with the trailer. I have been in situations where I pushed the limits of my gear. I wanted safety, ease of use, high quality, American made, and peace of mind and this hitch delivers all of that. The hitch arrived in great shape for being such a heavy beast. The directions are easy to follow and installation was very simple. Follow the directions and with a helping hand you will have this hitch installed in about 30 minutes and I go slow to make sure everything is exactly correct. The hitch is heavy so moving it into place and adjusting the latches takes some muscle. Other than that this thing is plug-and-play. I towed this weekend for the first time with this hitch. I went on a short 250 mile trip. This hitch makes ZERO noise. It's sturdy. There is no play in the connection and the truck and trailer are one. This hitch feels incredibly smooth to tow with. No knocking, rocking....nothing. Just smooth, strong stability. The best hitch I have used, easily. The best part is hitching and unhitching, so much safer and easier than any hitch I have seen or used. Some hitches tend to bind or have tension loaded making unhitching a multi-step, sometimes less safe process than it should be. Not this hitch. Drop year landing gear, pull the pin, and drive away. Anyone who has ever fussed with a 5th wheel hitch hear me me now. If your are sitting on the fence and wondering if this hitch is truly a 5 star hitch stop wondering and pull the trigger. It's a five star hitch and worth every penny. And buy it right here at e-trailer. Excellent customer service and solid pricing. They truly care about the customer. They answer their phones too if you have any questions. In today's world that means more than I can say. 346705

I have been pulling with this hitch for a year now a few thousand miles through all kinds of hard terrain and all over the Pacific Northwest. I stand 110 by my initial review. This is the best hitch I have ever used. The ease and safety of hitching and unhitching alone was worth the money not to mention the peace of mind. Smooth sailing. Best hitch I have ever used.

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

I have had this hitch for a year now, and pulled 5000+ miles. The hitch has been flawless with one exception. I experienced a problem with the factory puck system mounting (Ford truck). When taking the hitch out before winter, I noticed a couple of latches were loose. I assumed the castle nut just needed to be tightened a hole or two. However, what I found was that even if I tightened the castle nut all the way, it would still not latch to the truck (no resistance when turning the handle). After numerous calls with B&W, they sent me new cam latches. However, those did not solve the problem. B&W thought maybe the shear pins sheared, and cause the cam to loosen. However, I don't believe this is the case. The shear pins were intact and the cam was in the exact same position as the new cam latches I received. Also, I had never over-tightened them. Apparently B&W has seen problem when user use a hammer to close the latched. I've never done that, so I don't think that was my issue. It appears to me they have a tolerance stack-up issue, and their factory setup does not accommodate the variations from vehicle to vehicle, or the compression of their spring washer. To resolve, I used a large washer below the spring washer to take up the excess slack and still keep the castle nut at a level where it lined up with the cotter pin hole. This problem was a little nerve racking, since this is the sole mechanism for securing the hitch to the truck. This is not where you want to have a problem! Aside from this issue, as critical as I felt it was, I would still recommend this hitch. The ease of removing is awesome. The towing experience is good, although I have not used any other 5th wheel hitch so I can't really say this one is the best on the market. I would buy one again though. 256797

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

--------------This is a very strong hitch with an innovative mount.-------------------- I have been using the hitch for about a year now. I purchased the combo kit with the gooseneck in bed parts as well as the 5th wheel assembly. I purchased this unit because it can provide both the gooseneck and 5th wheel modes. I installed mine in a 2014 RAM 3500 DRW which already has the basic structure under the bed so the install went very well. I completed the install at home, which took about 4-5 hours. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, plus there are several installation demonstration videos online for my exact truck, so after watching those it was no problem. The 5th wheel works well with no squeaks or rattles. I pull a 35' 13,500lb toy hauler. The hitch parts are made of thick heavy steel which really gives confidence it will pull the heavy loads. The king pin jaws also seem a bit larger and more heavy duty than other hitches with the same ratings. The hitch also has a lot of adjustments both up and down, and for and aft, which helped to dial in the hitch very well to my trailer. It does convert from 5th wheel to gooseneck easy enough. Just remember it does require a socket to relieve the tension on the gooseneck adapter before it can be released. This is not a big deal, just makes sure to bring a wrench along if you are planning to swap modes while away from home. There is only one small aspect that keeps me from rating the hitch as excellent. I have noticed that the paint/coating scrapped of rather easily in the mouth of the coupler. I guess I rubbed the side of the mouth with the trailer pin when coupling up and it caused the paint to scrape off. Since then the coating is also starting to peel all around the jaw area. 264228

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

I recently purchased a Curt A20 for GM Puck System and had a lot of noise issues from the hitch when starting and stopping. Curt claimed the spacing designed into the jaw system could make the noise or the factory brake controller is not programmed correctly to the weight of my trailer which is making the trailer to slam forward and then reverse. Curt also asked me to lock out my pin box (Rotaflex) to stop the potential over travel of the hitch head. I did lock out my pin box and it still made noise. Curt did send me a replacement head with no issues, but it unfortunately did not change the issue. At that point they told me there was nothing they could do if the hitch was within spec. It is performing to their design specifications. So....because I was not happy with the product, I decided to called etrailer and ordered a B&W Companion for the GM Puck system. They were extremely helpful with the order and it arrived very fast. I put it in the truck and connected the rv. Guess what no noise, no slamming. B&W did a great job in the design of this hitch to vertically eliminate any noises. I am so impressed with how quiet this hitch is that I should have strongly considered the B&W hitch in the first place. The price difference was difficult for me to justify initially, but now that I have had the two different hitches, it is more than worth the additional money. Overall, Curt tried to help me address the concern and makes good products. I believe the hitch would serve the purpose, but comparing it to the B&W, the B&W is definitely the best hitch I have experienced overall so far and etrailer is the place to get it from. 392973

Big and heavy . Took 4 of us to install it. Think I got the side support placement right. Will have to wait till I hook up too see. One complaint and the mfg. should do something about it. The handle can be reached from the side but not the locking pin. I'm going to have to figure out a way to lock it as at my age It is now a problem. Will come up with something that can be done from the side. 229735

On that issue I recommend a step you can leave in bed to pull out and step up to secure lock. Thats my plan for now.

One further comment. The jaws as seen from the back when closed should be painted yellow. Then it could easily be noted that they are closed.

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

After buying a 2015 Dodge Ram 2500 with the new puck system I researched several fifth wheel hitches and decided on the BWRVK3600 based on the fact it was an OEM part that would fit in the puck system without adding an additional rail system, and it being American made was absolutely a very nice bonus. I was extremely pleased with the exceptional customer service and how quickly the hitch arrived after ordering. Upon receiving and opening the boxes, I was truly impressed with the quality workmanship and the heavy duty weight of the hitch and the included parts. Coming from the engineering field I have learned that a product is only as good as its quality assurance, and your quality assurance appears to have extremely high standards! Prior to receiving the hitch I had viewed the video online, and as recommended I read all the included instructions first. It was easy to understand and I encountered no problems with the installation. Not being in a hurry and taking my time, it took me 3-4 hours to install, and then I hooked up to my fifth wheel to check the height. Afterward, I did make one adjustment to the height of the pivot arms, and now it is a perfect fit. I will definitely recommend your company and hitch to anyone looking for one and have already shown mine to several neighbors. Thank you for making an OEM high quality product! Cheers! Super fast shipping, came in on time. Convenient 2 boxed packages. Heavy! I started installing around 5:30pm, was hooking up to 5th wheel and testing at 7:15pm... Couple of interruptions would have been quicker. My Rep, Chris W. was extremely helpful, pleasure working with her! Whole unit is quality IMHP... Being safety freak I added some extra lock washers & nuts to flange plate bolts... Bolt sticks out roughly 3/4 inch after torqueing to 80lbs. per instructions. Added washer and nut to complete very solid connection... I could not be more happy or impressed with whole operation... Feel much better about cost now that I have laid hands on it... Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

Simple instructions and straight forward install, a bit heavy without an extra set of hands, but manageable (leverage is my friend). I've been using it for the past couple of months and am pleased with the companion hitch to pull a 35' fiver. The only thing I could have used in the instructions were recommendations for positioning (due to my lack of experience), but my initial placement worked out just right, the rig is well balanced, hauls very well and without chucking. Plenty of space in my longbed truck to clear a 50Gl. auxiliary tank and toolbox (and no worries about busting the back window out). Since I've got a bit of a steep learning curve ahead (I've hauled plenty of bumper pulls and goosenecks, but this is my first big 5th wheel), I greatly appreciate the ease of use as well as being able to free up my bed space when I reach my destination. Great product, can definitely recommend it. 232692

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

Purchased the BWRVK3600 Fifth Wheel Hitch a couple of weeks ago. This is a great product that arrived on time as stated. Assembly Instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I took my time but the whole assembly process only took about a half hour. I installed the assembled hitch into a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500, that has the factory prep towing package. The base sat into the puck style system with no trouble. Just some minor adjustments to the latches to get them to fit snugly as per the instructions. I used it to tow my new 40 ft. tow hauler home a week ago. Hooking up was so easy it slid right into the locking jaws with ease. In fact it went so smooth that I started to skid the RV on its landing gear. This fifth wheel hitch preformed beautifully during the tow. Taking off and stopping went very smoothly with no jerking motion. Backing into the RV site and unhooking was also very easy even having to jack knife the trailer into the site in uneven ground. As soon as I released the locking lever, released the parking brake, and put the transmission in neutral, the truck just rolled ahead with ease. I am really impressed with the whole process of assembly, installation, and operation of this fifth wheel hitch. It is a little heavy, but it is built that way for a purpose, the quality of workmanship is top notch. I look forward to years of service out of this fifth wheel hitch.Being made in America is the big plus. Thank you to B & W for a great product. 194163

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

I owned another brand of hitch for many years and always thought it was OK. When I bought our new 2015 Ram 3500, I ordered it with the 5th wheel prep kit - which meant it had the pucks for the hitch. After do some Internet research I decided on the B&W Companion hitch. All I can say is WOW! Now this is a HITCH. The hitch head separates from the base for easy storage. The head is not that heavy but the base is a beast. Here's what I love about this hitch: 1. The fit and finish on the hitch is great - the welds are excellent, the paint finish is great, it's obvious when you see this hitch that it is well built. 2. The hitch head is easy to remove. 3. The hitch head has a grease zirk for lubing. 4. The hitch has double locking jaws that give a great secure fit around the king pin. 5. The hitch is quiet - I mean really quiet. It might get noisy after a few years of use but right now it's extremely quiet. 6. The base is easy to install into the truck bed pucks. The instructions included helped me to adjust one of the puck locking pins easily. 7. The hitch is easy to adjust fore/aft and up/down. Not all hitches will allow you to adjust the fore/aft position of the hitch head. This is really a great feature. All in all a great hitch. Perhaps overkill for a 12,000 pound trailer but I like overkill in things like this. Highly recommend the hitch. 295768

Review from a similar B and W Companion in Fifth Wheel

I purchased this hitch to connect to the Chevy factory prepped 5th Wheel kit for a new 2017 Chev Silverado 3500 dually. My previous truck/ hitch combo (2015 Chev Silverado 3500 single axle 6.5’ bed w/ Reese Pro Series) used industry standard rails and there was quite a bit of movement in the entire hitch assembly and king pin area resulting in significant chucking on the horrible So. Cal. freeways. The B&W hitch was one of two recommended by the professionals at etrailer. I could not be happier. The hook-up is very easy & the overall operation of the hitch is much easier & simpler than my previous hitch. The 1” thick jaw makes a secure connection to the kingpin and the overall ride has smoothed out significantly. Great product so well liked that my son found a used one for sale and snapped it up for his rig. 504905

All though this hitch is not light (which I knew it would be beefy), it was really simple to install. In all it took about 4 hours to assemble and complete. I am not an novice to assembling heavy and intricate machinery. Reading the instructions completely is a must before starting any process. It looks and works great. The puck system makes it easier to install. And removing the 5th wheel when it is not in use just takes removing two keeper pins and lifting on the release handles. It did take longer to receive the hitch after I ordered it (about a eight days). 183013

We just recently ordered B&W Hitch for our 2017 F350 Dually Long Bed. The process was very smooth. We ordered the Hitch, and we received it within 2 days. It was well packaged and would recommend the hitch. We have not towed with it as of yet, but I can tell its already going to be better than my old Curt Q16 Hitch, Hands Down. Thanks for making this process smooth and Customer Service was great with answering all my questions. Only recommendations to make the install go smoother would be to include the Hex Head Bolt wrench to tighten the handle. 349443

I ordered the hitch online sight unseen. I rarely do this but after reading all the reviews on the hitch, and not just on etrailer.com, I didn't think I could go wrong. Almost every review I read about this hitch was between 4-5 star positive. I checked it over pretty thoroughly via pictures and being a mechanically inclined person, It looked well built from what I could see. My only concern is about the soft sleeve bushings and how long they will the last. Also, can you purchase replacement ones if they wear out. I haven't checked into it yet and it may not be an issue at anyway. I can say though that I am impressed with etrailer.com's service. Their communication throughout the whole process has been great and I even received confirmation today, both from my wife and an etrailer.com email, that the hitch has arrived. I rarely take the time to provide feedback but in this case I felt compelled to do so. Kind of like a tip after a meal. It's not always automatic unless the service warrants it. In this case, it does. Thanks guys (and gals) and I'll not hesitate to purchase from etrailer.com again in the future! 206506

So far it has been great! Being 65yrs old I was apprehensive about trying to assemble and load the hitch with just my wife to help. I remedied that by loading everything into the bed of my truck, including my tools and assembled it in place. Not being up to speed on RAMs puck system I did not know what to expect. I assembled the hitch, torqued it to spec and it dropped into place with out further adjustments or fanfare. I pull a 34' 5th wheel and don't even know it is back there. Hitching and unhitching is a breeze with very little learning curve. That says a lot since my learning curve more resembles a U-turn. Thank you B&W for a great hitch, thank you etrailers for a great deal. 468153

World Largest Mobile Kitchen B&W Companion OEM 5th-Wheel Hitch for Ford Super Duty Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs - BWRVK3300 is the most innovative towing products I have seen in a long time. It fit into the Ford hitch system with no problems. It is a shame that Ford, Chevy, and Dodge cannot have a universal mounting like the receiver hitches so that they fit all trucks. It is designed to be either directly above axle or 4 inches ahead. 273767

I recently bought a new 2016 Ram 2500 with the factory puck system. I found this hitch and after reading the reviews I decided to get one. The hitch shipped in 2 boxes, and unfortunately they arrived on 2 different days. The hitch head showed up in the factory box, but for some unknown reason UPS decided to deliver the base without its box. It was scratched up and had tape residue all over it where they had taped the pivot arms and parts bag to it. I called customer service to find out what happened and they assured me that was not how they shipped it. They immediately shipped me a new base, which arrived in its box, and had UPS pick up the scratched one all at their cost. Etrailer's customer service I received exceed my expectations! Talk about making sure your customers are happy. I haven't had the chance to tow with it yet, but I can say the fit and finish of the hitch is awesome. This thing is built like a battleship, even the same color as one. I'll come back and up date my review after I have a chance to tow. 285753

Excellent product, very sturdy design that will surely last years, paint quality is excellent and looks very durable. Hitch work very well to unhook, you don't have to hammer the jaws but you do have to find that sweet spot level Wise and anglewise where it releases easily. So far, very impressed with the Hitch, very quiet because of the incorporated Polyurethane bushings, easy to take off the bed, albeit the Hitch is a little heavy, but I'd rather have a heavier well made Hitch than a flimsy one thats lighter. If you take off the head separately, it makes it way easier to remove. If you're older and not as strong, I'd recommand doing it with 2 people instead of by yourself. Instructions were very good, I love the way the 2 skids "lock" into the grooves of the bed, makes for an incredibly stable and movement free Hitch. No more oblong holes that make noises like other brand's Rail systems. If you want to spend on a Hitch only once and be done with it, go with a B&W Companion with Underbelly gooseneck. 209521

Awesome hitch! Very easy to install (was more difficult to handle and remove the hitch from the wobbly poor fitting shipping container then it was to fit and properly adjust the hitch in my 2016 RAM 2500). Instructions are very clear and easy to follow. This is a very high quality hitch Including the fasteners. Weld quality and powder coat finish is superior to other products I researched or previously owned. Well worth the purchase price. To bad the great looking powder coat was scratched in places from the crummy shipping container causing the base to slide around damaging the high quality finish. e-trailer agent Katie M was awesome to work with and product arrived all the way out here in CA in less then 4 days with the free shipping offer. Overall fantastic hitch and e-trailer is always awesome to work with. If your in the market for a superior fully adjustable 5th wheel hitch for your RAM 2500 or 3500 do not hesitate to go with this super quality B&W all made in the USA hitch. 258650

1 year in and hitch is working very well. Still tight fitting with no signs of wear. Following the lubrication guidelines keeps the hitch working perfectly. The poor manufacturer shipping packaging container that caused so much damage to my new hitch finish is still a huge contention for me. How can such a awesome quality be packaged in such a shoddy card boards box allowing the hitch to be scratched heavily and legs poking out the side of the shipping container. It is a shame a $1100 dollar hitch was placed in a 50 cent shipping box. Terrible quality control by the manufacturer.

I wanted to wait till I towed with this hitch before I reviewed it. Up until this purchase I have been a loyal Reese customer, my last hitch, the one this replaced was a Reese Elite 18k. Let’s just say by comparison the B&W Companion makes the latest Reese products look like the China-bombs of hitches. Not only is this hitch made in American, with American steel, but the build quality is so much better. Just comparing the horseshoe plates it’s like comparing tin-foil to and actual steel plate. There’s no bucking, or noise from this hitch. Plus the coupling, and uncoupling were so much easier (no spring to set). Also adjusting the ride height of this hitch is a breeze. Thank you B&W for making a great, and superior product, but also eTrailer.com for excellent customer service, as well as fast free shipping. FYI: Pulled 14k camper 243miles with a 2015 Ford F-250, with the factory hitch prep, long box, and the riser arms in the forward position on the lowest height. 505660

I just received the hitch. All was delivered as expected and quickly. I have not installed the hitch yet due to the weight. It will take at least two people to lift the base into the truck. I chose to purchase from etrailer as no one locally could beat the price and with free shipping and no tax i saved several hundred dollars. etrailer was easy to order from and very friendly on the phone. I purchased this hitch because i just bought a 2017 Ram 3500 with the puck mounting system in the bed. I have a 40 ft BigHorn that weighs in at just under 16k. My old truck had a 16k hitch with the rails above bed. I never felt the old hitch was safe pulling a trailer at close to it's capcity. The new B&W 25k hitch is overkill but worth the peace of mind. I love the puck system as there is nothing left in the bed when the hitch is removed. Makes it easy to use the whole bed when time comes to haul other things like construction materials. 421897

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel?

  • Best 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2017 Ford F-350
  • The best fifth wheel trailer hitch for you depends on the details of your 2017 Ford F-350. The Reese Elite Series is a great choice, especially if you have the factory prep package. The Elite fits right into Ford's factory pucks so there's no need for an adapter. If your truck is an 8 foot bed use the stationary hitch # RP30142 but you'll need the slider # RP30144 if your truck is a short bed. They're both 18,000 pound hitches. Another great option is the B&W Companion. The Companion...

  • Difference Between B&W Companion Slider Hitch BWRVK3400 and BWRVK3400-5W
  • There is no difference at all between the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 and the # BWRVK3400-5W. We use the -5W at the end of the part number to allow the hitch to show up in two different fitguides. One for the gooseneck fitguide and then one for the fifth wheel fitguide. The Companion setups are considered by many to be the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. The Companion slider is going to be a much better option than using an adapter to use the stationary Pro Series hitch.

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Options for a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali
  • Since your 2015 GMC 2500 has the 6-1/2 foot bed you will want to go with a sliding 5th wheel hitch. There are a couple of different options that you can go with here. If you are wanting to go with a 5th wheel hitch that uses the standard base rails then I recommend going with the Reese Titan 20K # RP30870 along with Base Rails Kit # RP50066-58. The Titan 5th wheel hitches are one of the best hitches that we currently carry due to the dual-jaw system that uses geared teeth to help secure...

  • Difference Between B&W # BWRVK3400 and # BWRVK3400-5W
  • There is no difference between the # BWRVK3400-5W and the # BWRVK3400, other than the fact that we offer the # BWRVK3400-5W as a 5th wheel hitch and # BWRVK3400 as a Gooseneck to 5th Wheel Hitch Adapter. It's the exact same sliding fifth wheel hitch that's designed to fit into a B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch. We do this so it will run through our fitguide. If you don't already have a 7-way trailer connector installed in the bed of your Ford, you can easily install one using part # 41157.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for the 2015 Ford F-150 6-1/2 Ft Bed Aluminum Body
  • A Reese Elite Underbed Mount System is not available for your 2015 Ford F-150. For a Reese system I recommend the Reese Titan 20 5th Wheel Hitch with Round Tube Slider # RP30870 and the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Outboard Installation Kit # RP56034-53. These outboard rails make it easier to access the installation hardware, which helps cut down on installation time. The Titan 20 is a great hitch that features a 4-way pivoting head, 9 inch wide funnel to make it easier to...

  • Under-Bed Fifth Wheel Rail Kit for 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty
  • The Reese Under-Bed Rail Kit # RP30073 that you referenced will not fit your 2017 Ford F-250. It's designed for older model year Super Duty trucks. The under-bed kits we currently carry for your truck are the Demco # DM8551009 to be used with Demco fifth wheel hitches # DM8550032, # DM8550022, or # DM8550037 and the B&W # BWGNRK1117-5W to be used with the B&W Companion hitches # BWRVK3500-5W or # BWRVK3400-5W.

  • Can B&W Companion Slider Hitch be Used with Both a Short and Long Bed Truck
  • Yes, you can use B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs Item # BWRVK3400-5W on both a long bed truck and a short bed truck. On the long bed truck you just won't have to slide the hitch back (though you can if you want to). I have linked a video review of this hitch for you.

  • Will the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch Work With a 2017 Ford F-250 and a Trailer With a Sidewinder
  • As long as your 2017 Ford F-250 has the factory puck system installed, then yes, the B&W Companion Hitch # BWRVK3300 will work great in addition to your Sidewinder. If your F-250 does not have the factory puck system then you will need a slightly different setup. You will need to install the Custom Underbed Installation Kit # BWGNRK1117-5W, and you will need to use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500-5W. Normally if you put your F-250 through our fitguide it would tell you that you would...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2011 GMC Sierra Short Bed with B&W Turnoverball Installed
  • If you have the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1012 installed on your 2011 GMC Sierra 3500, then the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500 mentioned in your question will install and be compatible with the gooseneck hitch on your truck. The reason you do not see this fixed 5th wheel hitch listed through your truck's fitguide is because of the 6-1/2 foot bed that your Sierra has. Typically, with short beds like yours, a sliding hitch like the B&W...

  • The B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3400-5W offers a height adjustment feature with a choice of 3 heights for the pivot arms, and it of course provides front-to-back slider travel of 12-inches. There pivot arms can be installed in either of 2 ways, one providing more forward clearance than the other. • How Much Clearance is Required between Truck Cab and Trailer to Safely Make 90 Degree Turn
  • To safely execute a 90 degree turn you want at least 4 inches of clearance between the truck cab and trailer. The head of the # BWRVK3400-5W is adjustable from front to back so you may be able to adjust it back a little bit for better clearance while pulling out of your driveway. Otherwise you will need to slide the hitch back in the bed of your truck to make the turn. The reason for needing 4 inches is because if the turn your making has an elevation change the added clearance will...

  • The Ranch Hitch Adapter # AM3139 is fine for temporary use but is not something I recommend using for an extended period as it may put added stress on your trailer frame and possibly void the warranty. You are already halfway to what is considered by many to be the best fifth wheel setup with the Turnoverball Gooseneck # BWGNRK1313-5W on your 2004 Dodge Ram; I highly recommend using the sliding B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W. • Will a Slider 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Fit Demco 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter DM6140
  • Any trailer hitch that fits in industry standard above the bed rails will fit in the Demco adapter # DM6140. Most hitches will fit in the slots on the rails that are spaced 20-1/2 inches apart on center. Any hitch that mounts on 10 inch centers (side to side) will NOT fit. I recommend using a slider hitch such as # PS30857 which can slide back 10 inches to provide more clearance when turning. But, if you have a B&W Turnover ball hitch (hitch is what adapter # DM6140 fits) then I recommend...

  • Can I Make a 90 Degree Turn with 5th Wheel Trailer Using B&W Companion Slider pm 6-1/2 Foot Bed
  • In order to make 90 degree turns and have a little clearance left over to account for uneven ground the distance from the back of the cab to the center of the ball or hitch jaws, including any travel from a slider, needs to be at least 4 inches greater than 1/2 the width of the trailer. For a 96 inch wide trailer you would need 52 inches. Given the 34 inches you measured and the 12 inches of travel from the slider that gets you to 46 inches, 6 inches short of where you need to be. Both hitches are high quality, and would offer you a secure, relatively smooth ride. For the Curt hitch, use the # C16426-204 rail kit or for the B&W Patriot, use # BWRVK2601. • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit Recommendation for a 2013 Ram 2500 Mega Cab
  • Since the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 that you referenced does not move the pivot point further back you really do not gain much clearance for tight turns with a short bed truck.
