Getting there is half the fun, right? Not if you're being bumped, jerked, jammed, and pushed around from the chucking and road shock that occurs as you tow your fifth-wheel trailer or RV. And imagine the costly wear and tear on your trailer as it endures that rocky ride.

Put the fun back into your trip and ease the stress on your trailer by replacing your factory pin box with the Trailair air ride pin box. The internal air bag and built-in shock work together to cushion your ride, improve handling, and limit strain on both your truck and your trailer.

Air Bag Absorbs Road Shock

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air bag and shock

Standard pin boxes without any type of shock absorption transfer road shock to your trailer, resulting in potential damage to the trailer and an overall bumpy ride. But the Trailair air ride pin box absorbs shock and cushions your ride as you pull your fifth-wheel trailer. When you encounter uneven terrain on your trip or hit a pothole on the highway, the Trailair pin box compresses vertically, similar to how a pair of scissor blades closes in on each other. This compression transfers the road shock and vibrations to the internal air bag, saving your fifth-wheel hitch, trailer, or tow vehicle frame from enduring a rocky ride.

A built-in strut, or shock, controls the Trailair's compression so that the internal air bag doesn't burst. The strut also causes the pin box to appropriately rebound without any bounce, and positions it to be ready for the next bump in the road.

Simple Setup and Installation

First, simply remove your existing Lippert 0719 pin box from your trailer. The Trailair uses the same bolts that held on your original pin box so no additional hardware is required for installation. Plus, the Trailair pin box comes out of the box ready to be put on your trailer, so no assembly is needed. Because the Trailair is quite heavy, you should put it on an elevated surface or have a friend help you support its weight during installation.

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air intake valve and inflation indicator

The internal air bag should be inflated after the pin box has been mounted on your trailer. Using the air intake valve, inflate the air bag until the outer cylinder of the shock rises high enough to fully expose the yellow inflation indicator sticker.

Video Transcript for Lippert Components Fifth Wheel King Pin - Pin Box Upgrade - LC179879 Review

Today we're going to review part number LC179879. This is the Lippert Trailair Air Ride 5th wheel pin box. This is designed to replace the Lippert O719 pin box, has an 18,000 pound weight capacity. This is an air ride pin box which replaces your standard pin box on your 5th wheel trailer. This will cushion your ride, improve your handling and even limit the strain that's on your truck and trailer. It will minimize the chucking which is the back and forth movement, and it will eliminate the bounce and the jarring which a lot of times it's called porpoising.

In other words when your tractor and trailer will do this, it'll give you bounce and jarring. Basically right here, this internal air bag will absorb your road shock. The way it's designed you'll see the pivot bolt here. This pin box has a scissor-like motion, and that allows the pin box to compress compensating for jarring and bouncing. Right on the end here, this built-in shock will ensure that the pin box rebounds, keeps the air bag from breaking down. The other nice thing is the internal air bag right here needs to be inflated after you've mounted this pin box to your trailer. Right up here is the air intake valve.

You just inflate the air bag until this outer cylinder right here on the shock will rise high enough to fully expose this yellow inflation indication sticker. Right here there's a sticker and on it, it says inflate to this point, and there's two arrows pointing up right to the top of the label. Once you put the air in that, this outer tube of the shock will raise. Once it gets above that, you have a good starting point for how much air to put in your air bag. This does have a nice black powder coat finish, helps provide rust resistance.

It's a sturdy, steel construction. The kingpin right down here on the bottom will connect to any 5th wheel trailer hitch. It is a bolt-on installation with no assembly required. It is made in the USA. The specs again, it's designed to replace the Lippert O719 fifth wheel pin box and has a weight capacity of 18,000 pounds. One thing I want to do is give you some pin box measurements, and that's pretty critical when you go to replace your pin box that's on your trailer with a pin box like this because you want the bolt pattern right here to match up to what you have on the trailer right now. What you want to do is you want to verify that you have the Lippert O719 pin box.

What you can do is measure the first one as horizontal distance between the bolt pattern. That's from the center of the front row of holes to the center of the back row of holes. Basically, if you put a ruler on that center to center, that's going to give you 7-3/4 inches horizontal distance. Vertical distance is going to be the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the hole right above it. If we do center to center, 2 inches, and then the bolt hole diameter is 5/8ths of an inch diameter. The other thing I want to do is show you the width which is also critical. You want to make sure when you measure the width of your pin box, we're going to turn this around. It's outside the outside, so if we turn it this way, put the ruler on it from outside the pin box to outside, you can see 12 inches wide. Those are very critical measurements that you want to make sure they match up to the pin box you have that you're going to replace. A couple of other measurements I want to give you, and these measurements are going to show you once you put this on your 5th wheel trailer what the distance is going to be between the kingpin and these mountings holes. Basically the center of the kingpin is where you'll start from. I put marks there to give me an idea where to put the ruler. You'll measure from the center of the kingpin to the front row of holes, I'll give you that measurement, and then the center of the kingpin to the back or rear row of holes. If we take the ruler, and I put it on here. Let's try to get an idea. From the center of the kingpin to the front row of holes is 13-1/4 and to the rear row of holes is going to be 21 inches. One last note, I do want to let you know is that when you do use a pin box like this, the trailer air ride, you cannot use this with any type of gooseneck connector. It is not recommended to do that. It could cause problems, so you do not want to use this with any type of gooseneck adapter. That should do it for the review on part number LC179879, the Lippert Trailair Air Ride 5th wheel pin box for the Lippert O719 pin boxes, has an 18,000 pound weight capacity. .

Using this Trailair Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box to replace the OEM standard (rigid) pinbox on my Montana unit allowed me to both lower the pin and shorten the pin box to mate up perfectly with my Curt hitch in a longbed GMC 3500. The ride greatly improved. I do wish the air valve had a 45 or 90 degree turn as it can be very difficult to get most air chucks onto the valve. There is not much clearance between the top of the valve and the underside of the the trailer, and the unit does require frequent refilling. If not for that difficulty I would give five stars. 615141

The hitch is on a 2011 28' Coleman 5th, pulled by a '98 Dodge Ram 3500 dually. The ride is greatly improved. No more chucking and bouncing. I would have given 5 stars but the airbag won't hold air overnight. 272841

Great product to tame the 5er bucking down the highway on those concrete seams. Ride is much smoother and I'm sure it is reducing the wear going down the highway on both the trailer and the truck. 526032

Have the Lippert Components Trailair fifth wheel king pin installed on our 40 foot Big Country has made the difference in pulling the trailer down the road. I would recommend the King Pin if pulling a fifth wheel trailer. Now we don't even know it behind us. Great Product. 468371

The TrailAir pin box is a good upgrade from an entry level unit. You have to learn what the ideal air pressure needs to be for your rig, ie, trial and error. The TrailAir calms the fifth wheel trailer quit a lot going over bridge entries and over rough roads. It would be nice if they would install a tee on the air inlet port with the air add fitting and an air pressure gauge so that one could see the actual bladder air pressure anytime. 320366

This was the very best upgrade we have done to our 5er. If you don't have one, get one! The difference and comfort is night and day. It projects the 5er and everything inside, the truck and just makes a world of difference! Can't say enough good things about it. 2007 Montana 3000RK. 383478

Your trailair should not be losing air that quickly. Changes in temperature can affect the pressure in the air bag just like it does with vehicle tires but only by a few psi. It sounds like you need a new tank valve for it part # LC156740

Have not did a road test yet but it’s installed. Way heavier than factory. I have talked to many that have this and like it. Helps reduce chucking back and forth movement. Nothing will be solve all if you are on a rough road you will feel it. No hitch will eliminate. Was fairly easy to install you will need help to lift. I used the tailgate on the truck and backed under and used blocking to get in place. I installed pretty much myself. My wife help some with aligning the bolts. 593929

Excellent item! Works exactly as promised. The only issue I have, which is a small one, is that I have to pump up the doughnut before every trip because the air will leak out. Not a big deal because I have the compressor out to pump up the tires anyway. This pin box takes 98% of the chucking and side-to-side motion out of our fifth wheel. Makes for a lot less white knuckle driving, eases everyone's nerves, and we arrive at our destination without the near whiplash we used to have. If you are looking for a way to ease the ride, this is an excellent product to accomplish that goal. 711395

I love this AirRide by Trail-air. It provides an incredibly smooth ride on the road. You can adjust the amount of air for your ride, the Schrader valve is right on top of the unit and easy to access. My Trail air installed easily on my Forest River Sandpiper 372LOK mid bunk, especially with help from my Dad. This Trailair solved a big problem for me. I needed an extra couple of inches space between my 2018 Ford Super Duty DRW and the coach. My truck came with the Ford factory-installed Reese 27K hitch and I needed more clearance to allow the tailgate to drop without touching the coach. The kingpin on the Trailair sits at least 2” forward of the factory kingpin and provided that desperately needed space. It really makes for smooth and quiet ride ! etrailer folks were very helpful. The first unit was damaged by the freight company and when I notified them, etrailer sent another unit quickly. I will buy from etrailer whenever I can.. 646799

Hitch makes for a lot smoother ride than the factory one, I all so put air bags on the truck. Rides very nice. On installing the new hitch, there was a clearance problem. It was less than an quarter inch interference on the lower front part of the frame that the kingpin box bolts to that needed to be ground down for the pinbox to fit. The next thing was the bag had a hole in it, so it needed to be aired up every day. Got new one sent to me under warranty, witch was great. But the video that showed how to replace it was for the wrong hitch. I figured it out myself. Working good now. 498680

  • Which Reese Goose Box Fifth Wheel Adapter Fits 2015 Heartland Cyclone 4100HD
  • From previous customers with your same trailer we know that your 2015 Heartland Cyclone 4100 HD came with a Lippert 1621 pin box so then for a Goose Box replacement you'd want the # RP94720 which has a 20k capacity of the part # RP94716 which has a 16k capacity. I looked up the GVWR of your trailer and determined it's 18k so you'd need the higher capacity # RP94720.

  • Troubleshooting Pinbox on Fifth Wheel That Hits Side of Truck Bed
  • Sounds like your best bet is to go with a shorter pinbox like # LC179879. I checked with Lippert and the measurement from the kingpin to the rear of the box is less than 31", so with this new pinbox you should not have any problems with your fifth wheel hitting your truck's bed rails. My contact said that the bolt holes are similar to the pinbox you have now so they will line up fine.

  • Can a TrailAir Pin Box be Retro-Fitted with a Rota-Flex Head/King Pin
  • We do not have a kit that would change your TrailAir pin box to a Rota-Flex style. The Rota-Flex would be a downgrade from the TrailAir style pin box so I am not sure that would be the best route to take. The new latest and greatest are the Flex Air pin boxes, # LC328484. The design can be described as a cross between a Rota-Flex and a TrailAir. The best of both worlds! I have linked a couple of videos you can check out on the Flex Air for you.
