Getting there is half the fun, right? Not if you're being bumped, jerked, jammed, and pushed around from the chucking and road shock that occurs as you tow your fifth-wheel trailer or RV. And imagine the costly wear and tear on your trailer as it endures that rocky ride.

Put the fun back into your trip and ease the stress on your trailer by replacing your factory pin box with the Trailair air ride pin box. The internal air bag and built-in shock work together to cushion your ride, improve handling, and limit strain on both your truck and your trailer.

Air Bag Absorbs Road Shock

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air bag and shock

Standard pin boxes without any type of shock absorption transfer road shock to your trailer, resulting in potential damage to the trailer and an overall bumpy ride. But the Trailair air ride pin box absorbs shock and cushions your ride as you pull your fifth-wheel trailer. When you encounter uneven terrain on your trip or hit a pothole on the highway, the Trailair pin box compresses vertically, similar to how a pair of scissor blades closes in on each other. This compression transfers the road shock and vibrations to the internal air bag, saving your fifth-wheel hitch, trailer, or tow vehicle frame from enduring a rocky ride.

A built-in strut, or shock, controls the Trailair's compression so that the internal air bag doesn't burst. The strut also causes the pin box to appropriately rebound without any bounce, and positions it to be ready for the next bump in the road.

Simple Setup and Installation

First, simply remove your existing Lippert 1116 pin box from your trailer. The Trailair uses the same bolts that held on your original pin box so no additional hardware is required for installation. Plus, the Trailair pin box comes out of the box ready to be put on your trailer, so no assembly is needed. Because the Trailair is quite heavy, you should put it on an elevated surface or have a friend help you support its weight during installation.

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air intake valve and inflation indicator

The internal air bag should be inflated after the pin box has been mounted on your trailer. Using the air intake valve, inflate the air bag until the outer cylinder of the shock rises high enough to fully expose the yellow inflation indicator sticker.

Video Transcript for Lippert Components Fifth Wheel King Pin - Pin Box Upgrade - LC155943 Review

Today we're going to review part number LC155943. This is the Lippert TrailAir Air Ride Fifth Wheel Pin Box, designed to fit the Lippert 1116 Pin Boxes, and this has a 21,000-pound weight capacity. This Air Ride pin box will replace your standard pin box on your fifth wheel trailer, helps cushion your ride, improve your handling and it will even limit the strain that's on the truck and and the trailer itself. It does minimize chucking and it will also eliminate the bounce and jarring, also know as porpoising, when you get that effect on your trailer when you're towing. It has an internal air bag right here, helps absorb the road shock. You can see where the pivot point is right here, so it gives you a scissor-like motion and this allows that pin box to compress, compensating for the jarring and bouncing. You'll notice right here it has the built-in shock on the end here.

This insures that that pin box rebounds and keeps the air bag from breaking down. This internal air bag right here, this should be inflated after the pin box has been mounted on your trailer. Right up here is the air intake valve. Inflate the air bag until this outer cylinder on the shock right here will rise just above and fully expose this yellow inflation indicator sticker right here. You'll see the arrow is pointing up, so once you're above that, then it's fully inflated to where you want it. This is a black powder-coat finish on this, helps provide rust resistance.

It is a sturdy steel construction. The king pin connects to any fifth wheel trailer hitch. Right down here is your king ping. This is a bolt-on installation. There's no assembly required and this part is made in the USA.

The specs on this again, it's designed to replace the Lippert 1116 Fifth Wheel Pin Boxes. It does have a weight capacity of 21,000 pounds. When you're going to use this to replace the one you have, you do need to make sure you have the correct application, to make sure you have the Lippert 1116 Pin Box, you want to do some measurements. Basically, what those measurements would be is, you'll see you have the three rows and then what you're going to do is measure the horizontal distance between the center of the front row to the center of the rear row of holes. I put the marks at the centers just to make it easier to see. You can see it will be right at 8 3/4 inches.

That's the horizontal distance between the bolt pattern. The vertical distance between the holes, from the center to the center, is going to be right at 2 1/2 inches. The bolt hole diameter is 5/8-inch diameter. The other critical measurements are going to be from the center of the king pin, the king pin's right down here, so that center of that, I put a mark here, to the center of the front row of bolts and then the center of the king pin to the rear row of bolts. I've got this ruler here, we're going to try to get that measurement for you. If we go right there to about the center, you can see it's going to be 14 5/8 inches, and to the very rear it's going to be 23 1/4 inches. The last measurement I want to give you is the overall width. That's a critical measurement. On this one, let me try to rotate it here so we can get a good, there we go. The overall, outer edge to outer edge is going to be right at 12 1/2 inches. One last note, this TrailAir Air Ride Pin Box cannot be used with any of the gooseneck adapters, so you don't want to use this with any type of gooseneck adapters that are out there. That should do it for the review on part number LC155943, the Lippert TrailAir Air Ride Fifth Wheel Pin Box for the Lippert 1116 Pin Boxes, and has a 21,000-pound weight capacity. .

This was the very best upgrade we have done to our 5er. If you don't have one, get one! The difference and comfort is night and day. It projects the 5er and everything inside, the truck and just makes a world of difference! Can't say enough good things about it. 2007 Montana 3000RK. 383478

The TrailAir pin box is a good upgrade from an entry level unit. You have to learn what the ideal air pressure needs to be for your rig, ie, trial and error. The TrailAir calms the fifth wheel trailer quit a lot going over bridge entries and over rough roads. It would be nice if they would install a tee on the air inlet port with the air add fitting and an air pressure gauge so that one could see the actual bladder air pressure anytime. 320366

Have not did a road test yet but it’s installed. Way heavier than factory. I have talked to many that have this and like it. Helps reduce chucking back and forth movement. Nothing will be solve all if you are on a rough road you will feel it. No hitch will eliminate. Was fairly easy to install you will need help to lift. I used the tailgate on the truck and backed under and used blocking to get in place. I installed pretty much myself. My wife help some with aligning the bolts. 593929

Excellent item! Works exactly as promised. The only issue I have, which is a small one, is that I have to pump up the doughnut before every trip because the air will leak out. Not a big deal because I have the compressor out to pump up the tires anyway. This pin box takes 98% of the chucking and side-to-side motion out of our fifth wheel. Makes for a lot less white knuckle driving, eases everyone's nerves, and we arrive at our destination without the near whiplash we used to have. If you are looking for a way to ease the ride, this is an excellent product to accomplish that goal. 711395

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel King Pin?

  • How to Determine Fifth Wheel Pin Box Model
  • If you are unable to contact your trailer's manufacturer with your VIN to find the factory pin box model number there are some steps you can take which will allow you to determine what pin box model you have so you can purchase a new FlexAir. To do this you will need to follow the steps in the linked help article, which I will go over with you. Start by selecting your pin box style like in the accompanying photo (which you will also find in the help article). You will then need to use...

The 1116 is considered a medium length pin box and is about 7 inches shorter in length horizontally. The 1716 Demco Glide Ride will bolt up and could work well but it's going to be a bit longer.
