Is this right for you? Product Expert Kathleen M says:

Yes, if you:

  • Have had issues your trailer bouncing and want to soften the ride so you don't feel tossed around in your truck
  • Tow a very heavy trailer or toy hauler with a pin weight between 1,500 and 3,500 lbs
  • Have no patience for filling up an air bag every time you hit the road

No, if you:

  • Haul your trailer with a truck that sits high - this pin box adds some height which can cause chucking if you can't adjust to compensate
  • Have a short bed truck or a toolbox and need a pin box that gives you more clearance between your truck and trailer
This shock-absorbing pin box provides a smooth, safe ride while you tow your fifth-wheel trailer. The all-in-1 box has no air bags to refill or small parts to replace. The weight scale lets you monitor your vertical load. 3.5K pin weight. 1-800-940-8924 to order Gen-Y Hitch fifth wheel king pin part number GY95FR or order online at etrailer.com. Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the king pin, which connects to the fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the king pin will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the king pin moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the pin's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

Executive scale

The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 1,500 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Fifth Wheel King Pin - Fabex 665 and MM 665 Shock Absorbing Pin Box - GY95FR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th-Wheel Pin Box. This pin box is going to upgrade your existing pin box on your fifth wheel trailer. The king pin is still going to insert into your truck's 5th-wheel hitch it going to add shock absorbing capabilities that are going to allow for a much smoother, steadier ride for you. This is designed to replace the FABEX 665 AND M&M 665 5TH-WHEEL PIN BOXES.

This will do a great job of fitting right in place of that original. So it's gonna be a very simple installation. You're just gonna bolt on to your original trailer wings. They do include some hardware to get it mounted in place. You will need that instead of reusing the existing bolts.

So, having that included is really nice as this is going to be very simple to get installed but not super easy because this is gonna be very heavy Your original is gonna be very heavy. so you're definitely gonna want a second set of hands to help lower that original lift this up in place. I've seen some people back up their truck and use a Jack to lower and lift. So just be mindful that it is very heavy to work with. So you're, while it's simple to get bolted in place of the original you will need a little bit of assistance there.

This is gonna be just a little bit shorter than your favorite 665 and M&M 665 pin box. So as you can see where our pin king pin is there it's right about centered with these bolts. So if I measure from the center of one bolt you can see back to our first set of holes. It's right about 17 inches and our rear most set of holes it's just shy of 26 inches. So, because it is going to be a little bit shorter the clearance between your trailer and your tow vehicle during turns might be reduced so, make sure that this is still gonna work for your setup.

It does have a nice sturdy steel construction. So, very heavy duty Gen-Y has a great reputation for building very robust, solid products and this is no exception. This is going to give us a 18,000 pound towing capacity. Of course, that is the weight of the trailer plus the load included and a pin weight capacity range of between 1,500 and 3,500 pounds and the reason for that range is because of our shock absorbing system here. So we wanna have at least 1,500 pounds afford to properly engage. If we have more than that 3,500 it's gonna be too much for the system and we're really not gonna get the benefit of it. So it is very important that we have it within that range to help us with that. They do include this little pin box or a little pin weight scale here. And so I'm going to go to a close up here so you can see that a little bit better as you can see, this has the red, green and red sticker in that white painted mark there and so as we load our trailer up, we wanna make sure that the white mark is aligned with this green portion, and then we'll know that we are within that optimal pin weight range. And so it's nice that they include that give us some confidence that we're right where we need to be in order for the shock absorbing capabilities to function properly. So the way this works if you're familiar with torsion axles, it's very similar. So, right here at all of our pivot points we're going to have a square bar inside there. I've got a cutaway here to kind of show you a little bit better. So there's a square bar. You've got these rubber cords on each side. So as that experience is shock and movement that bar is going to twist in there and it's going to be absorbed by that rubber. So it's going to dampen that and it's going to prevent your shock and movement from being transferred from your tow vehicle, back to your trailer and vice versa from your trailer up to your tow vehicle. So, it's gonna help reduce your chucking and rough fore and aft motions, it's gonna limit your bouncing and jarring up and down motion. So it's gonna make it a much smoother and steadier ride for you. This does have a really nice system to it. So, unlike some of your other shock absorbing functionalities or mechanisms out there this isn't going to require nearly as many moving parts. So that's gonna be fewer parts to repair or replace in the future. You're not gonna have to worry about an airbag having to make sure there's enough air in there filling it up, letting the air out, that sort of thing. And so it is gonna be very easy to maintain. In addition to our heavy duty steel construction we also have this powder coat finish across the whole unit that's going to help resist wear and corrosion. So it's gonna be a very long lasting unit and it is made here in the USA. So you can trust it is gonna be good quality. But like I said, Gen-Y does have a great reputation for very robust, very solid towing systems. So this is gonna do a really good job for you. It's going to make sure that that towing your 5th-wheel is gonna be more stable and gonna take a lot of that shock and play out of it for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Review from a similar Executive in Fifth Wheel King Pin

Install went smooth. I'm 75 and with a small car jack on my truck tail gate it went very quickly. Blocked the pin end on bed so it wouldn't tip and jacked up the back. Got one rear hole lined up bolted and then just jacked up the pin end and put those bolts in. I will hook it up today and see how it sets. Might have to lower my truck hitch one notch if it sits too high - we will see. ( Momentum 395 MS/ F350)

Thanks again for the excellent, professional, knowledgeable customer service. It is refreshing to be able to talk to someone who is friendly and glad to help with specialized needs such as racks, hitches, etc. You won't find that kind of service in a lot of places. That is why I recommend etrailer to all of my friends.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is getting very popular and lots of people are wondering when a truck rack, or ladder type rack will be available for it. It is a great truck but the roof does not allow larger items like longboard surfboards or SUP boards or kayaks to be installed on the roof. There just is not enough room for standard surfboard racks to be spread out long enough to safely carry these longer items. Thule says 27 1/2" is the standard distance between bars but all of us surfers, windsurfers know that one needs more distance between the crossbars to carry a 9' surfboard or greater. I was going to use the Thule racks I just ordered on my 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, but it seems there is just not enough room on the roof to get the distance needed. Plus, the roof is kind of rounded toward the front so the front bar will be down at an angle. I ended up putting the rack on my Hyundai Tucson. So, there is a need out there for a different system for the Santa Cruz. Any advice on a roof rack for the Santa Cruz would be appreciated. Maybe I am looking at it wrong and I don't need as much room on the roof as I think to transport a longboard. I know there is a lot of discussion on this subject on the Santa Cruz forums online. I use a 9', and 10' longboard (surfboard).

Review from a similar Executive in Fifth Wheel King Pin

This is the 2nd large order (hitch components & roof rack) I placed within 2 weeks. Each was processed quickly and arrived ahead of the projected delivery date. Further, the website was extremely easy to use with excellent configuration and installation articles and videos. I dealt with Quinn, a phone rep, who did a great job answering my questions and configuring the equipment. I highly recommend doing business with etrailer.
