Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the king pin, which connects to the fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the king pin will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the king pin moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the pin's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Fifth Wheel King Pin - Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel Pin Box - GY86GR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen Y hitch shock absorbing fifth wheel pin box. This is gonna upgrade the existing pin box on your fifth wheel trailer so that it will add in the shock absorbing capabilities and give you a nice, smooth, steady ride. But it does have your standard kingpin that's gonna insert into your truck's fifth wheel trailer hitch. So it is going to hook up the same, but then it's gonna give you that shock absorbing capability. So this is designed specifically to replace your Lippert Rhino fifth wheel pin boxes.

So it is going to be a very straightforward installation. You'll just take off your Lippert Rhino fifth wheel pin box and install this in its place. Simple bolt on installation using the existing mounting bolts. Of course it is straightforward, but these are very heavy so you're definitely want to have a second set of hands, maybe back your truck up, use a jack to lower that original pin box, lift this up in its place, and then get that original mounting hardware put in place so that it will be secured for you. So, again, very straightforward, but it is very heavy so definitely want to get some help getting it installed.

This is made here in the USA of a heavy duty steel construction. It is going to provide a 21,000 pound towing capacity. Your pin weight capacity is gonna be a range between 1500 pounds to 3500 pounds. And the reason for that range is you wanna make sure that you're falling within that in order to properly activate the shock absorbing capabilities of your system here to make sure that it's going to engage properly, it's not going to overload it. It's gonna be enough to get it to start moving and absorbing that shock the way you want it to.

To help with that they do include a pin weight scale here on the side. So you can see we've got this white mark here with our green and red sticker. So when you have the your trailer loaded, you want that white mark to be lined up with that green section so that you know you're within that pin weight capacity. So if it's in either of the reds it's either under loaded or overloaded so you'll have to rearrange how you have your trailer loaded and make sure that that tongue weight is adjusted to fit within that scale. So the way this shock absorbing technology works, it's similar to a torsion axle, if you're familiar with that concept.

So I've got a very similar cutaway here for you. So you can see that inside our pivoting points we have these square bars and those are going to allow for the movement of your pin there from the rest of the unit. But on each side of those square bars there are these rubber cords that go through. So as that square bar turns that movement is gonna be absorbed by those rubber pieces there. So it's going to help to reduce the shock that you're getting. It's going to cut back on the chucking and rough for and aft motion as well as limit your bouncing and jarring up and down motion. One of the really nice things about this design is that it's pretty much set it and forget it set up. You're not gonna have to do a whole lot of maintenance. Unlike other systems that use airbags you're not gonna have to worry about putting air in or letting air out depending on your load. It's gonna have a lot fewer components to it, so less that can be damaged and need to be replaced in the future. So really low maintenance option here to give you that shock absorbing capability. The steel here has got a powder coat finish on it so it's gonna help resist rust and corrosion and overall should do a really good job helping to absorb that shock from transferring from your trailer up to your tow vehicle and vice versa from your tow vehicle back to your trailer. So it's gonna help reduce some of that strain on your equipment and make it a much smoother, more enjoyable ride for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

I installed the unit today. It appears to be well built. You should note that it is very heavy compared to a Rhino Box (120# v 50#). I inserted the pin box onto my fifth wheel hitch and then backed into place to mount it on the camper making it a one person job.

Some items to note…hardware is not included. GenY recommends grade 8 bolts. The original hardware was grade 5 on the rhino box. Also, I don’t like to retension high strength bolts, so I would recomend new grade 8 bolts. The rhino only had 10 bolts where I could get 12 in this one. Also note that the tag on the actual pin box says only good for 18000lbs (not 21000 as advertised). The tongue rating was as advertised 3.5k model) My camper is smaller so the 18000 lbs isn’t an issue.

Haven’t actually road tested yet, but I am confident it will improve ride.
