Notes:
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the king pin, which connects to the fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the king pin will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the king pin moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the pin's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The top red mark on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (5,500 lbs). The bottom red mark indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff for etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Gen Y hitch shock absorbing fifth wheel pin box to replace the Lippert 1621 and Lippert 1621 HD pin boxes. And this has a 30,000 pound weight capacity. Now this fifth wheel king pin box will upgrade your existing Lippert 1621 and the 1621 HD pin boxes on your fifth wheel trailer. The mounting holes right here you can see, these will line up to your factory holes and the king pin right down here, this is what will insert into your truck's fifth wheel hitch. This one uses the shock absorbing design, which ensures a nice, smooth, steady ride.
The technology functions just like a torsion axle to limit the transfer of road shock from the trailer to the truck and vice versa. It does reduce chucking and the rough fore and aft motion. It will limit the bounce and the jarring up and down motion also. And what's nice is there's no bags that you have to maintain and a lot fewer moving parts to repair or replace than with some of the other shock absorbing solutions. Now this does offer a pin weight scale right down here. This is built in to help you balance your trailer.
The scale lets you know if your load needs to be adjusted before you tow. Basically the vertical load or the pin weight, this refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer will exert downward onto the hitch and the truck bed and too little vertical load can cost trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance. Now this gen light pin box has that built in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low.I want to zoom in on that, just so you could see what we're talking about. So if you notice the scale right down here does have a red on each end and that's showing you maximum and minimum. And then the green area in the middle.
Now the red areas are too high in the too low areas. So you do not want to be in those areas. The maximum red on the scale that pretty much will indicate your maximum vertical load of a 3,500 pounds. The maximum red down here. This is going to indicate no vertical load, like you can see where the white markers indicating it right now.
There's no load on it.So vertical load of at least 2000 pounds is recommended for this builtin shock absorption to function effectively. So that'll mean that, that white indicator line right over here, it should be within that green area when you hook up your trailer to tow. So that scale gives you a quick look at, make sure you have the right pin weight when you're hooked up.Now this is a heavy duty steel construction, has a real nice powder coat finish on it to resist wear and corrosion. As I mentioned, it's a simple bolt on installation. The holes align up with the factory holes on your fifth wheel and they do mount using the existing pin box bolts. This part is made in the USA. It is designed as I mentioned to replace the Lippert 1621 and 1621 HD fifth wheel pin boxes, towing capacity again is 30,000 pounds, pin weight capacity is 5,500 pounds. But that should do it for the review on this Gen Y hitch shock absorbing fifth wheel pin box to replace the Lippert 1621 and Lippert 1621 HD pin boxes.

I can know turn 90 degrees and I have up to 10 inches of clearance from top of bed rail to 5th wheel overhang

Etrailer is an awesome website. They are very responsive to questions. Installation was simple and straightforward. I have not towed with this new pinbox as my rig is bedded down for a long winter nap in the northeast.
