Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the king pin, which connects to the fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the king pin will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the king pin moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the pin's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
Easily Check Your Vertical Load
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 2,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing Fifth Wheel Pin Box for your Lippert 1116 and Lippert 1716 pin boxes. And this pin box has a 30,000 pound weight capacity. Now this fifth wheel king pin box is an upgrade to your existing Lippert 1116 or Lippert 1716 pin box that's on your fifth wheel trailer. This pin box will replace the factory pin box on the trailer, and the king pin right down here is where to insert into your truck's fifth wheel hitch.
Now this pin box uses a nice shock absorbing design, which ensures a nice, smooth, steady ride, and the technology in this will function just like a torsion axle, and that limits the transfer of road shock from the trailer to the truck and vice versa. I want to show you the insert of what the insides are made of this right here, where these bolts are. You can see those tubes. We mentioned they have the design of a torsion axle, so they have an outer tube with rubber cords around the inner bar, and those will help reduce chucking and rough four and a half motion and to also limit bounce and jarring up and down motion. What's nice about this pin box is there's no air bag that you have to maintain, and then that you do use fewer moving parts to repair or replace them with some of your other shock absorbing solutions.
This does also offer a unique pin weight scale on one of the lower arms right here, and that scale is built in to help you balance your trailer. The scale will let you know your load needs to be adjusted before you tow, and the vertical load or pin weight on the trailer refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer is gonna exert downward on your hitch in the truck bed, and too little vertical load can cause trailer sway, too much load could cause poor performance. So I just wanted to zoom in here and show you. Here, you can see the scale right here on this lower arm. So if you look at that scale, it has a red area on top and then a red area right down here on the bottom.
So on top, there's red, on the bottom, there's red. And that's the maximum load at the top, the minimum load at the bottom. And then there's the green area in the middle. So the red areas are too high and too low areas. You do not want to be in that area.
You want to be in the green area. The maximum red up at the top, that scale indicates your maximum vertical load of 4,500 pounds. The very bottom, that red area is gonna tell you there's no vertical load at zero pounds. So you want this white marker over here, this white indicator line, to be in the green area once you're all hooked up and loaded down. That green area will give you your pin weight capacity range of 2,000 to 4,500 pounds. And you do need at least 2,000 pound load, vertical load for this built-in shock absorption system to function effectively. So basically, as we mentioned that line there should be pointing inside that green area. Now this is a nice heavy duty steel construction. Has a real nice powder coat finish on it to resist wear and corrosion. And to install this, it's a very simple bolt-on installation. The mounting holes on this pin box will line up with the factory holes, and they do mount using these included filler shims and the factory or the existing factory bolts. And the reason they include these shims is because of the width on this pin box, on these wings back here, is 12 inches, and to fit it onto the Lippert 1116 and Lippert 1716, they are 12 and a half inches wide, so you need to install the plates, so they'll fit in there correctly. Now these parts are made in the USA, and again, the towing capacity on this is 30,000 pounds. The Gen-Y gooseneck has been excellent! I now have approximately 12k miles on mine and it rides very nicely with very limited chucking and handles rough roads very well. I’d highly recommend that you contact Gen-Y BEFORE ordering to ensure you get the correct load rating product. Gen-Y and Etrailer have provided excellent customer and tech support! Installation was very straight forward, it is heavy so you need something to prop it up for you while you get at least one bolt started in each side. I used the bucket on my tractor to hold it up. I only have one tow in so far for about 50 miles so still early to review. It certainly works as advertised for taking out a lot of the trailer feedback on rough roads, uneven transitions, etc. It is an improvement in ride quality and makes towing a big fifth wheel more comfortable. Necessary? Probably not but it does spoil you a little bit. One problem though that Gen-Y is working on fixing is the ball to pinbox is a little bit longer and I did hit the bed cap at about 60 deg of turn while backing in at an angle. It cleared when I tested it in the flat driveway, but not by much. They are going to come up with a fix. I'm at 7 1/2" clearance from the overhang to the bed caps sitting flat. This is with a '18 Chev Silverado HD 8' bed and a '19 Momentum 351M769579

This coupler will have the same height adjustments as the Lippert 1621 and 1621 HD pin box however will be roughly 2 inches shorter overall then your currently pin box so depending on the bed length of your truck you may have cab to trailer clearance issues if not using an offset gooseneck ball.

I have a short bed diesel truck with a B&W gooseneck system installed. I purchased the GEN-Y Gooseneck to install on my new 5th wheel. I have a gooseneck horse trailer, so this choice was obvious. I ordered the GEN-Y from etrailer, we had a lot of back and forth discussions on shipping and arrival dates. I had my local RV dealer install it, way to heavy for me to wrangle. The RV dealer had never heard or seen the GEN-Y product line before, they were so impressed that they are now the authorized GEN-Y dealer in my area. When I hooked my 5th wheel I didn't have enough space between the truck cab and the 5th wheel to maneuver. I had mistakenly thought the GEN-Y would provide enough added space, wrong. I called etrailer to discuss and express my concerns and asked if they had any info to help me. The courteous customer service representative acted like they had never heard of this problem before and would certainly look into it and call me back. Nope, never heard from etrailer.com again. I did my own research and found a gooseneck extension ball manufactured by B&W and it is rated at 20k. This made it possible to actually maneuver the 5th wheel. This B&W extension should be recommended by etrailer every time a Gen Y gooseneck hitch is sold to a short bed truck owner. But, since etrailer had never heard of this problem don't count on it. I am very disappointed with their customer service. Regarding the GEN-Y, this is a beast and built so well. While towing my 5th wheel I am fully enjoying the torsion shock absorbing technology. One area for improvement on the GEN-Y, the release cord does not have method to keep the release cord open without holding it. On a competitors version (Reese) they have a method to hold it open. See pic for this method, I plan on adding this to my GEN-Y, which is otherwise a far superior product in my opinion. Love the GEN-Y, not so much for etrailer.1352720

This works absolutely perfect in a Ram 3500 with 6 1/2 ft bed, and the Gen Y gooseball hitch. I think if more people knew of this combination, the fifth wheel style hitch, Anderson hitch and others would become obsolete. If you have a short bed truck do not buy this gooseneck. At first it seem fine but unless it’s a long bed it’s shorter than you think. If you go up a small incline sideways so the rear of your RV will not scrape it will give enough to crush the side of your truck. I thought the gooseneck would give me a little more length or space and it did not it was actually shorter only in a long bed truck would you get better space1267662

It is possible that you could use this adapter with a 6.5 foot bed however there would be measuring that would be done and possibly a different set up in your bed. You would need a gooseneck system that would allow you to use an offset bed that would give you more room. You would also want to use the formula found in the ask the experts answer that I have linked below.

This was better than I expected. Truck felt smoother going down the road with our new 5th wheel than with our previous rig with a standard 5th wheel hitch even though the new rig was about 3.5k lbs heavier. I believed the claims of a smoother ride because of the torsion action but I was really amazed at how much better it was. The one I was skeptical about was the improved mileage claim. After a 7 week long RV trip putting over 4K towing miles with a heavier, (and slightly taller trailer), I was averaging the same, even slightly better, as with my previous rig with the same tow vehicle. This setup also freed up the bed of my truck tremendously. It also lowered my pin weight/payload number by about 70lbs as compared with the original Pinbox and 5th wheel hitch I had. Quick, easy install. And this thing took the fifth wheel amazingly. My first trip was from Tulsa to Memphis. Most of the ride was 70 cruise control and there were quite a few times I saw the fifth wheel bouncing around in the back, but hardly felt it in the truck. I have a 2019 F350 DRW. The shipping was quick, I bought on a Sunday and had by Wednesday. The install was fairly easy with two people. Just don't forget to retorque the pin box bolts after a few hundred miles.
