Video Transcript for Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails Installation - 2014 Ford F-250

Today on our 2014 Ford F-250 Super Duty we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Reese Quick Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for fifth wheel trailer hitches. Part number is RP50026-58. Here's what our rail kit's going to look like when we finally get it installed. As you can see we're going to have the two heavy duty black powder coated steel rails mounted right to the bed of the truck. Each one secured down with five bolts. As far as modifications to the frame go, there are none. We're going to use existing holes here to pass through our bolts and then just a single nut on the backside, nice and straight forward installation. Another thing I like, you're going to notice that the tabs come outward, that means the end bolts that typically are right above the frame and almost impossible to torque down properly are going to be very readily available and easy to torque down.

They're out here where we can get to them. Now you'll notice the three slots that the rail's going to have on each side. Each rail has a total of six and basically that makes this extremely versatile. These rails can work with the Valley, the Reese, the Curt, the BMW, many different types of fifth wheel heads can go in here and if you need a gooseneck ball connection, there's also plates that you can drop right in, pin them in just like you do a fifth wheel that will allow you to have a gooseneck. Now the rails are going to sit up over the bed of the truck by about an inch and a quarter. So, from the top of the corrugation to the top of the rail here, it's about an inch and a quarter difference.

Now, overall our customers are very pleased with this product as well, seems to get very good reviews, kind of echos what we've talked about; good product and easy to install. Now, having installed this one and having installed other fifth wheel kits, I would certainly get this one for my truck just because it is very easy to install, easy to get put in place, you're going to be heading down the road hauling your trailer, camper, whatever you've got. Now depending on whether you've got a gas engine, which we're working with today or a diesel engine, you may have to relocate the vapor tubes that run along the frame rail here on the driver's side. You can see this clip that holds the larger and smaller one in place here. This is kind of a Christmas tree style fastener so we need to just pry out on it. Check yours, it may have a flange nut.

If it has a flange nut, you'll just want to remove the flange nut of course. Now we can grab our bracket, this is what we'll use to relocate that, you'll see the two bolts here, we can choose one of those to put that push fastener back in. To secure it, we're going to use the provided quarter inch bolt and flat washer. We're going to bring that through the hole from the outside of the frame and we're going to slide our bracket on. On the inside of the frame, we're going to have another flat washer and also a nylon lock nut. We'll rotate that so it's in the upward position there and that's where we'll want to tighten it down.

Then we'll bring that fastener, in this case down through that inside hole. Now we're going to move on to getting our rear rail in place. You want to refer to your instructions, they're going to give you a measurement from the rear of the truck bed to the rear edge of the rail. We want to make sure that we have that measurement up to the back of both sides and we're also going to need to ensure that we've got our rails centered in the back of the truck bed. Now, this truck has a spray in bed liner, if yours does have a spray in bed liner, you have to account for that extra little bit of bed liner that's been added on the back edge so if it's a sixteenth or if it's an eighth inch thick, keep that into account. If you have a drop in bed liner, you're going to need to remove that. Once you have that out, put your rail in and then cut it around it, you do not want to install your rails over a drop in style bed liner. Now with the rail in the correct position we need to mark the center of the rear hole, here in the middle. Then we're going to mark the center of all four of our outside holes. Now with our rail out of the way, we'll take our center punch, we want to punch the center of each hole. We want to drill those out with a one eighth inch drill bit. Now, check below each of these holes, you don't want to drill through anything, brake lines, anything wiring or anything like that. Now the holes that we've drilled are going to come down on each side of the half channel here, yours might be a little different depending on your bed size. Once that's in place, we want to test out our brackets here. We just want to make sure that our holes are lined up with the holes that are in our bracket. If yours are squared up, that'll be good. If not, then you'll want to adjust them slightly to where they are in the center, ours are a little bit back so we're going to drill just in front of where those holes are, that way they'll go right down through the center of our brackets here. Now we'll enlarge our holes up to a nine-sixteenths inch diameter. Now we'll get our mess cleaned up here. It's always a good idea to use a little bit of rust preventative spray paint on any of the bare metal that you've exposed just to help prevent any rusting. Now depending on your bed size, whether you've got the short bed or the long bed, once you use your step bit through the bed of the truck, you're going to get into a second layer which is the hat channel on the backside and on the front side. We're going to use our nine-sixteenths drill bit and drill down through that so we have plenty of room for our bolt to pass through both the layers here. Now we're going to take our u shaped spacer blocks and we want to place those underneath the hole on the lower side of the bed corrugation. See how we've got that lined up with the hole above it. We're going to do that in all five locations, then we can place our rail and drop our bolts down through. Then we'll bring our side plate back up into position, we're going to slide our bolts through. Then we'll head to the underside, we're going to thread on our nuts with the retainer. Now, we can tighten our nuts up a little bit but we won't snug it up fully. Leave just a little bit of wiggle room there. Now we can repeat that same process over on our drivers side. Now we'll slide our rail back into position, we'll line it up over our holes. We'll place our bolts down and through. Now at all five bolt locations, we're going to slide our spacer up and on. We're going to slide on a conical tooth washer, you want the teeth of that to face up towards the spacer. Then we're going to thread on a hex nut. We're going to use that to apply a little bit of pressure to that rail to keep it from moving around while we get the rest of our hardware in place. Now, for our middle hole location, we're going to be using the elongated spacer, just a little bit thinner. That's going to slide on and then it's going to get the same hardware, conical tooth washer and a nut. All right, now we'll snug all five of these own to keep our rail from moving around. Now, whichever fifth wheel hitch you plan on using, you're going to want to put those arms in, it's going to give us the appropriate spacing for our forward rail, so engage it in the rear. We're going to bring our forward rail in and position that so it also lines up. Then we want to push that kind of as far back as we can, takes out any slack. Then we're going to center it up, mark our holes and drill them out just like we did for the rear rail. Now we're going to get these holes enlarged to nine-sixteenths as well. Now just like before, in all five locations we want to slide our u shaped spacers into place. Make sure they're lined up with our holes so we can put our bolts down through. Now we can snug everything up and torque it down to the specifications listed on your instructions. You want to do it in the proper sequence too, which means we're going to tighten our rails first, then our frame brackets. Once we have the rails torqued to our frame brackets here, we'll then snug up our frame brackets and get those torqued down appropriately. Now with everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Reese Quick Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for fifth wheel trailer hitches. Part number RP50026-58 on our 2014 Ford F-250 Super Duty.

I ordered the Reese Custom install kit for their 5th wheel hitch for my 2011 F250 Diesel Lariat, short bed. It was shipped quickly, was well packaged and came with clear directions. etrailer was fantastic about customer support and making sure all the pieces parts were there. I'm planning on installing in a couple of days and am looking forward to using it. I'm glad I went this route vs the other generic kit. This one is cut to fit this exact vehicle, so no hunting for good mounting spot, moving lines or drilling the frame etc. 545964

It does not fit the 5th wheel; do I have to drill new holes in 5th wheel???? 596431

Comments
The Reese 30023 hitch you have used a T-bolt mount to the bed rails, versus a linch pin style connection used by the newer ones. Reese hasnt manufactured that connection style since around 1990. Unfortunately, Reese doesnt offer those rails or hitch legs that would allow you to retrofit your existing hitch. There is a solution, though. Your old rails shown in one of your photos should be compatible with the frame brackets, so as long as the old rails are still in sound shape you could reuse them. Drilling holes in the new rails isnt recommended, as it could weaken them.

I received the Reese 5th wheel 16,000 lb slider hitch from etrailer in June 2019; installed it in July 2019. Took around five hours to install the base rail kit and Reese hitch start to finish. So far so good, this heavy duty slider hitch works flawlessly with my F250/fifth wheel combo. It arrived in multiple boxes, had excellent instructions and an operating manual. For myself and other do-it-yourselfers, etrailer provides excellent support and installation videos to help with the install. 829964

It was the easiest set of rails I have ever installed. I mounted the brackets to the frame and drilled a pilot hole up to the top of the bed. I could have had the job completed in less than 20 minutes if it weren’t for having to climb in and out of the bed. All of my trucks from now on will have the same product. 797149

  • How to Mount a Reese 5th Wheel Hitch on a 2014 Ford F-250/F-350
In order to determine which rail kit you need for your 2014 Ford F-250/F-350, we would need to know how the hitch mounts. There are two different types of mounting brackets, under bed and above bed. If you could send me a photo of the hitch or find a part number for it then I would be able to confirm how it mounts. However, the vast majority of Reese 5th wheel hitches will install using industry standard above bed rails therefore the correct kit for you is more than likely the Reese...

  • Is there a Base Rail Kit Compatible with Reese 5th Wheel Hitch 30023 on 2014 Ford F-350
The discontinued Reese 30023 5th wheel hitch you have is not compatible with the industry standard rails. Unfortunately the rails for that hitch are no longer available so you will need to upgrade your hitch or use your old rails. I've attached photos to assist. My recommendation is to upgrade your hitch so I've linked the page to all your options. I then recommend using the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50026-58. This...

  • Rear Bumper to 5th Wheel Trailer Clearance
The Reese Custom Quick-Install Kit, # RP50026-58, will not move the center of the fifth wheel hitch directly over the axle. It will actually place the hitch 2-15/16 inches in front of the center of the axle. If the 5 inches between the truck bed and the trailer is the closest the two get when turning, then that is not too bad. We typically like to see at least 4 inches to allow for pitch in the road. Another dimension that you can check is the distance from your truck bumper to the...

Yes, for just the brackets of the part # RP50026-58 that you referenced which is a fit for your 2014 Ford F-250 short bed you would want the part # RP50026. Since the hardware that attaches the rails to the brackets is one time use and not included with that kit you would need the part # RP58430 as well.

The # RP50026-58 rail kit is a replacement for the RP50073-58 and will work with your 2014 F-250. Since you have a short bed truck you will need a sliding fifth wheel hitch. If you have the # PS30099 hitch head, it can be installed on the Pro Series Fifth Wheel Slider with Rollers # RP30092. If you need a 7-way trailer connector in the bed of your truck I recommend part # 41157.

The Draw Tite fifth wheel hitch part numbers you mentioned represent an industry standard rail style of fifth wheel hitch that is very common so yes it can fit your 2016 Ford F-250. So all you'd need to fit it into your truck bed is the correct rail kit for your truck. The best and easiest solution is a custom install kit like the # RP50026-58 which will minimize drilling and install time. Or if you are okay with a much more involved install the universal # RP30035 is another solution.

I have several hitches that will work with your new 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty, but based on the information we have, your 12K Reese 5th wheel hitch will not work with anything that is made these days. The only 12K 5th wheel hitch that Reese had was made between 1985 and 1990 and it was actually made by another company called Owens Classic. Reese dropped that line in 1990 and released their own 5th wheel line, so anything sold by Reese that was made before 1990 will not fit anything made...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2012 Ford F-250 with B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch Installed
Your B&W gooseneck hitch has under bed brackets that attach to the truck frame rails. Fifth wheel trailer hitch installation kits like # RP50026-58 also have brackets that would install in the same place as the B&W brackets. So basically you could have one or the other but not both. Also, unless your Pullrite SuperGlide is a model that fits industry standard rails (ISR) it would not fit these rails. But there is another solution. Since you have a B&W Turnover ball hitch you can use the...

  • Measurements for Installing Reese Custom Rails and Installation Kit on 2011 Ford F-250
There is one important measurement that you will need when installing the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit, part # RP50026-58 to your 2011 Ford F-250. That measurement is for placement of the front mounting rail. The measurement will be from the rear edge of the bed of the truck, with the tailgate removed, to the inside edge of the front mount base rail. This measurement will be 54-3/16 inches. There is a diagram in the included installation instructions that will...

  • Will the Hensley BD3 5th Wheel Hitch Work with Reese Base Rails on a 2015 Ford F-350
Yes, the Reese Custom Fifth Wheel Base Rails and Install Kit, # RP50026-58 , will fit your 2015 Ford F-350. Your Hensley BD3 hitch is compatible with all standard above-bed fifth wheel rails, so it will work with the Reese base rails that come with this kit. I have attached an installation video on a 2014 F-350 for you to check out. The installation will be the same on your 2015 model.

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Install Kit for 2011 Ford F-250 Diesel and Reese Hitch
All you will need is the proper installation kit that will accommodate the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) tank on your 2011 Ford F-250. Installation kit # RP50026-58 does accommodate the DEF tank so it is the perfect option for your truck.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Compatibility Between 2003, 2009, and 2014 Ford F-250
As long as your Reese 5th wheel trailer hitch fits on industry standard above-bed rails, you will be able to put your 5th wheel hitch in any of your F250s. The thing that will be different for each truck will be the installation kit and bed rails. For your 2009 Ford F-250 8 foot bed, I recommend the Reese Fifth Wheel Above Bed Rails with Custom Outboard Installation Kit # RP56005-53. These outboard brackets install on the outside of your frame instead on to the inside of your frame....

  • Can Fifth-Wheel Rails Be Installed On 2015 Ford F-250 Without Lifting The Truck
The installation instructions do not mention having to lift the vehicle but do say if more room is needed to lower and remove the spare tire. You can install the # RP50026-58 rail kit without a lift. You should have enough clearance under the truck without having to lift the truck at all. If you decide to use a jack to lift the truck you will need to make sure it is well supported with something like jack stands, and also make sure the wheels are chocked, so the truck has no chance...

  • 5th Wheel Base Rail Locations for Reese Setup on 2016 Ford F-350 Super Duty with 8' Bed
The spacing for the base rail kit can slightly vary based on the manufacturer but if you are installing the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails # RP50026-58 on your 2016 Ford F-350 long bed then you want to place the back of the rearmost rail 32-1/4" from the tailgate opening. Then from the center of that rail to the center of the front rail will measure 22". I have attached a dimensional photo of the rails from the installation instructions, as well as a photo...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Base Rails and Hitch for 2011 Ford F-250 Short Bed
For your 2011 Ford F-250 Crew Cab short bed, the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50026-58 is a custom fit that will give you industry standard rails compatible with the majority of 5th wheel hitches. The RP30085 you referenced has been replaced by the # RP30144 and is not the correct fit. That hitch requires the puck system rails for compatibility. You instead will want # RP30084 for the square tube roller. If you want...

  • Difference Between the Reese Custom and Outboard Installation Kits for a 2015 Ford F-250
The Reese Kit # RP50026-58 is a custom fit and provides base rails that are industry standard while the Reese Kit # RP56016-53 is an outboard installation kit which is much easier to install but has a slightly different design. It is still compatible with industry standard 5th wheel hitches though so you will not have to worry about that. Outboard installation kits are definitely the best option for installing base rails on your 2015 Ford F-250 as they as the easiest to install. Essentially...

  • Solutions for Fifth Wheel Slider Hitch that Won't Slide All the Way Back When in Rail Kit
If your hitch fits the rails it's most likely not the rails' fault that the hitch won't slide back far enough. Unless you had to really pry the hitch into the rail kit (which would bind up the slider mechanism) the rails and their placement shouldn't be an issue. See if you can pull the hitch out of the rail kit easily and then see if the slider mechanism will slide uninstalled from the rails. If you can't get the slider to work right, and because Valley is no longer around, it would...

  • Does Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Have Turning Clearance for Short Bed 2011 Ford F-250
The Andersen Ultimate Connection 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch System # AM3200 features a 9 inch offset which means it can be used on a short bed 2011 Ford F-250. You will not be able to make full 90 degree turns with the hitch so keep that in mind but you won't have any problems using the system. For base rails on your F-250 I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit with Base Rails # RP50026-58. These are the best option because they do not require any drilling into the...
