Video Transcript for Husky 5th Wheel Base Rails Kit Installation - 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Husky custom base rails and installation kit for the fifth wheel hitches, part number is HT31852-686. Now here's what our rail kit's going to look like installed in the bed of the truck. These rails are designed to fit just about any standard fifth wheel out there on the market. We've got the smaller, the medium, and the wide set of connection points. Going to make it work out great. Of course with Husky fifth wheels but also the Curt, the Draw-Tite, the Reese, the Hidden Hitch, the Valley, they should all fit in here as long as it's just a standard style application. From the top of the bed's corrugation to the very top of our bolt, we're looking at about 2 inches, so this by no means is going to give you a perfectly flat, smooth bed but really there aren't a lot of fifth wheel rail systems out there that do.

They've designed them of a sturdy steel construction. They're going to have a black powder coat finish on them. That's going to help them to look good for a long time to come. Also, when installing these rails with the custom installation kit, this is one of the simpler fifth wheel rail kit installs that I've done. There's going to be no drilling of the frame, no welding required.

We're just going to have the 6 holes that we drill down through our bed to secure our rails down to our brackets. Now our side plate design, as you can see here, also the sturdy steel construction with the black powder coat finish, and these are designed to prevent this from running into any obstacles. They designed it so once we get it installed here we're not going to have to worry about moving this, moving that. It's going to be a nice bolt on installation. We'll be able to get our fifth wheel hooked up once we're all said and done and get heading down the road. To begin our installation, we need to determine the appropriate location or where we're going to be installing them. To do that we want to take our legs, our arms, whatever it is that's going to be connected on your fifth wheel and get them pinned into the rails.

At this point we can use the measurements that are in our instructions. We'll measure from the back of the bed forward to the rear of the rail there. It's going to be different, depending on a short bed or long bed application but we'll want to get that even and we also want to make sure that our rail is square from side to side. A pretty good tip there would be that you'll want the center sections here to be just about centered on this rib but you know, take your time with it. Be sure we get these measurements really well done.

Make sure everything's square and then we'll get our holes marked. Now once our rear rail is positioned exactly where we want it, we want to pull rearward on that front rail without moving the rear rail here, just to make sure we take up all the slack. These will be able to move into each other and away from each other. We want to push it in, get any slack out of there. Now we can get our hole locations marked. For our rear rail, we want to come into the third large hole, right here on top. We're going to make right down in the center of that. We're going to come to the center hole here and we'll mark the middle of that and then third hole outside here. Now for our front rail, we'll mark the center hole just like we did in the rear but we need to mark the two holes on the very end in this position. Now we'll go to each of our marked hole locations here. We want to use a center punch just to get the center of that hole established then we can drill it out. Now at each of our locations we're going to start with a small hole then we're going to use a step bit to enlarge that out to 5/8 of an inch. You could also use a 5/8 of an inch drill bit. You just want to be careful underneath the bed. Make sure at each of your hole locations you're not going to be drilling into any fuel lines, brake lines, fuel tanks, things like that. Now we're ready to get our hardware put in place. We're going to have kind of two styles of the way we're going to be doing this. At all four outside hole locations there's going to be a spacer that looks just like this that's going to sit underneath the rail, so we're going to slide that in so it's over top of our hole location, and this hole sits on top of the corrugation, right here. At all four locations we are going to use a spacer block but since this in on top of the corrugation, this needs to go under the bed. We'll pass our bolt down through the spacer, down through this and then it will be threaded into our bracket. Now at the forward location, this hole is down in the corrugation, so we still need our spacer block in there but we also want to put our U shaped spacer underneath. We'll line that up with that hole location. The round spacer sits on top of that and then our bolt will go down through. Now once we are down through our bed with that, we're not going to have to add another U shaped spacer underneath it. Now we're also going to take our center bolt kit, which is going to be the long carriage bolt, and that's what goes through our center hole location. Now we can start getting our hardware attached to our bolts. We'll start with the center bolts. We're going to use two of our U shaped spacers. One goes just like that around the bolt. The other one's going to cross that, just like that. Now we're going to place on the flat washer. We're going to place on a lock washer and thread on our hex nut. It will be the same thing for the forward location as well. Now we've got our side bracket, this is on the driver's side. The real way to tell them apart is the small gap between the oblong hole and this tab. You see this one on the front. This ones going to smaller, so that narrow gap we want towards the front. I like the system of how we're going to get these nuts installed instead of trying to get in there with our hands, with nuts, lock washers. They've got these on a small bracket already. We're going to start with the front, so this is going to go nut side underneath the plate. It's going to slide in like that and you'll see our bolt that comes down through the bed here. Now we have a partner inside of the vehicle and what he's going to do is he's going to rotate that bolt once we have our plate underneath it to try and get it started for us. All right, we've got that one started so we'll just let that rest. Now we'll slide the rear one on, and the thing we want to keep in mind here is that spacer block needs to go up on our bolt and then we'll put our bracket up. Now we're going to take our fish wire. We're going to go through the hole in our side plate, right up towards the larger hole that's right on the inside of our frame rail here. Once that comes out, we're going to take our bolt, you see it's got the anti-rotation plate on it. That needs to be threaded onto our bolt leader there and now we'll pull that into the frame and then bring it out of the hole we put our fish wire in. Once that's come out, we can unthread our pull wire there. You're going to hang on to this. We're going to need it for the other three locations. Then, on to that, we're going to add a flat washer, a lock washer and a nut. I just need to go around, do the same thing for the other three locations. Now we're going to go through and double check all of our measurements to make sure they're still the same. Once we've confirmed everything's right where we want it, it will be time to start tightening our hardware down. Now we're first going to tighten the rails down to the bed and then we'll tighten our side plates. Once we have those snug, we need to torque them to the specifications in our instructions. Now with the rails torqued down, we'll move on to our side plates, get these snugged down and also torqued. Now with everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Husky custom base rails and installation kit for the fifth wheel hitches, part number HT31852-686, on our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. .

This is the second Husky fifthwheel bracket and bed rail kit I have installed. The first one was installed in my 2015 Sierra 2500HD and the latest was just installed in my 2017 Sierra 2500HD. The newest mounting kit had clips welded to the nut which allowed the installation to be done without a second person. The clips held the nut in place while the bed rail mounting bolts were inserted from the trucks box. This was a huge improvement over the older installation. The only problem I encountered was with the anti-rotation bolts not fitting through the frame hole and I had to file the teardrop washer slightly to get them to slip into the frames access hole. I also wish Husky would stamp the front end of the frame brackets with an "F" to eliminate any confusion on the correct bracket placement. 347303

This fifth wheel mounting bracket and bed rail kit was easy to install and I would recommend it to anyone. The Husky hitch and mounting system pulled my Forest River Hathaway all around the Adirondack mountains last year.

All I can say about this is if I don't have a machine shop in my garage and and whole day to install this it would have never worked. The holes weren't where they are supposed to be, the bolts don't fit into the holes there are supposed too. Also bought a Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom Wiring Harness w/ 7-Pole Connector - 7' Long - C56070. Follow the instructions carefully, get it all installed, plug my trailer in as I am leaving town for memorial weekend and the only thing that I get is my brakes locked up. So I plugged it into my factory 7 pole plug at the bumper worked fine there so obviously the wiring harness is jacked up. Also, it is splined so it only plugs in one way. I rigged up a bungee cord system to keep it off my brand new tailgate and off I went. So looks like a get to tear that apart this weekend and fix that. Great products etrailor - thanks for the headache. I know, why didn't I send it back right? Well I was trying to get out of town and not ruin my weekend. Better question, why didn't you send me the right stuff the first time. Never again. 255219

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel Installation Kit?

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Height for 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500 With 21-3/8 Inch Sides on Bed
  • In order to determine the correct hitch and height settings, you will need to take a couple quick measurements. Start by parking both your 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500 and new fifth wheel on level ground. You will then measure from the plate of the pin box to the ground. After that measure from the bed floor of your Silverado to the ground. The difference between these two measurements is the height of the hitch you'll need, keeping in mind you are going to need to keep your trailer level...
