Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel Kit Installation - 2017 Ram 2500

Today on our 2017 Ram 2500, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Curt custom fifth wheel installation kit with a carbide finish, part number C16427-204. Now it's also available in gloss black using part number C16427-104. Here's what our rails look like fully installed. They're going to be sitting in our bed and they're only going to take up right about just a little bit over an inch of room in our bed. Now these rails are going to allow us to put a fifth wheel in our bed and tow a fifth wheel trailer. Now these are going to accept most industry standard fifth wheel bases. Now these rails do come with a custom kit for our truck, which is going to reduce the installation time because we're not going to have to drill into any part of the frame.

We'll just have to drill several small holes to mount our rails into the bed. Now our rails are made of steel, with a nice black powder coat finish. They're going to be rust and corrosion resistant and they're going to compliment any color of your truck. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we get them installed. To begin our installation, I removed our spare tire. Now we're going to need to come under and we're going to remove our heat shield to give ourselves a little bit more room and so you can see better.

We've come to the side of the frame here towards the back, we're going to have two bolts. I'm going to use a 10 millimeter socket to remove those. Now if we come to this cross under here, we're going to have two bolts holding our heat shield against it. Again I'm going to be using a 10 millimeter socket. Now the easiest way to get to behind it, is go over the rail.

You can actually just reach back and feel for the bolt, that way you can get your socket on it. We're going to set this aside for safe keeping for right now. Now when we get ready to install our brackets, I want to mention we're going to have M14 bolts and we're going to have two slightly longer ones. Now these are going to go in our forward most bracket in the forward most hole and the reason why they're longer is because we have to put a spacer in between there. Now we've come to our driver side right by our shock and our rear axle, we're going to see two weld nuts. We're going to take our brackets here.

Now we're going to want to make sure that the two tabs with the oval slotted holes are facing towards the center of our truck. They're going to go around our bed support just like that. We're going to line up the holes. But before we put it in place, you want to make sure that you get the correct hardware to go in the correct hole. As I mentioned before, we're going to have two M14 bolts. Now towards the rear we're going to use the shorter one with a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing the bracket. I'm going to put it in hand tight for right now. Now in the back here you'll see there's a slight gap. We're going to take our spacer block and in between our bracket and the frame, we're going to slide that into place, lining up the holes on our bracket and our frame. Then we're going to take our longer M14 bolt and we're going to thread it into place. Now once we have everything in hand tight, we're going to take our bracket and we're going to push it as far back towards the rear of our truck that we can. Now we're going to come to our brackets and the oblong holes that are going towards our bed. We're going to take a center punch. We're going to mark the center of where we're going to drill. Now it may be a little bit hard to see, to verify up top. But since we know that we don't have anything in our bed and we don't have any electrical connectors or anything to worry about, we're going to take a small drill bit and we're going to drill a pilot hole from the bottom going up top. Now we're going to repeat the same process on the other side as well. Now on our drivers side, I do want to mention we're going to have several lines, vacuum lines and electrical connectors right by our fuel tank here. Now we do need to remove these lines temporary from the frame rail, so that we can get our bracket into place. Now I'm just going to take a flat head screwdriver and pop out all the clips that are holding in my lines. You just want to be extra careful not to damage any of the connectors or any of the steel lines that are on the frame. I put my mounting rail on my bed to verify that the pilot holes that I drilled line up with the holes in my mounting plate. We're going to come to the center and we're going to mark out the most forward hole in the center. We're going to need to drill a pilot hole and then the holes that we already drilled, we're going to be enlarging to a 9/16. Now we're going to repeat that same process for all the remaining holes. Now it's always a good idea to put a little bit of protection over the bare metal. I'm going to take a little bit of black spray paint and cover all the holes that I just drilled, that way I want have to worry about any rust or any corrosion effecting my bed. Now that our holes are drilled, we can go ahead and put our rail back into place. Loosely lining up the holes, now we can get ready to put our hardware in place. Now anywhere that there's a gap in between the rail and the bed between the ribs here, we're going to need to take a spacer block and we're going to slide it underneath the rail just so that it goes around our mounting hole. We have something to grab onto whenever we put our bolts on tighten everything down. We're going to take our half inch carriage bolts and drop them into all the corresponding holes that we just drilled. With our hardware loosely in place, we're going to take our half inch spacer block here and we're going to put it over our hardware. Then we're going to loosely install a half inch nut. Now we're going to repeat that process for all the remaining hardware we have left. Now that we have our forward mounting rail in place, we're actually going to take the base or the fifth wheel that you're going to be using and you're going to mount it into your rail towards the cab. Then we're going to take our second rail and we're going to put it in place where it lines up with our fifth wheel, so we can figure out where we need to mark our holes. Now once we have it in place we're going to take a measurement and make sure it's nice and square. We're going to measure from the wheel well here to our rail. We're going to want to make sure it's the same on both sides. Now that we have our rail square, we're going to pull towards the tailgate, make sure it's a nice tight fit, want to have any loose play in there. Now we're going to mark our holes that we're going to start drilling. Now we're going to have several different holes in our rail here. We're going to want to come to the inner most hole and we're going to mark. We're going to do that on the front and the back side. Now for our center hole, we're going to go towards the tailgate. You're going to want to mark the center hole towards the back of the vehicle. The other side again, we're doing the inner most holes. Just want to make a mark then we come back and drill our pilot holes. Now we don't have to but I always recommend removing the rail before you start drilling, that way you don't have to worry about damaging your rails or scratching them or anything. We're going to repeat that for all the other marks that I made. Again using a step drill bit I'm going to drill all my pilot holes to a 9/16 hole. I'm going to repeat that process for all the remaining holes. Now I want to mention if we come to our forward most hole on each side, forward towards the cab. If your pilot hole did not go all the way through the bed support underneath, you can go ahead and drill that out now. Just a small hole make sure that it's going all the way through and when you look down, you can see daylight and you can see the ground underneath. Now here on the drivers side, this is the pilot hole that we drilled through. Now we're going to need to come back and using a step drill bit, I'm going to enlarge that hole to a 7/8 inch. Now we're going to want to periodically check to make sure that our spacer can fit inside of our hat channel there. Now once we can, we're going to come back and put a little bit of spray paint on my bare metal, don't want to have to worry about any rust. Now we're going to repeat that same process on the other side as well. Now on the passenger side here we do have an exhaust hanger but if we can get our spacer block in through hat channel from the side, we only need the hole big enough. Then we got to have our bolt drop down through. It mat take a little bit of work and patience and you may take some weird angles that you're going to drill at. Now before we put our spacer blocks in place, in the instructions it does let us know that we may need to trim our spacer blocks. One way to find out is if you put it into your hat channel and you have any bit sticking out, you're going to need to trim that down so it's flush or as close as flush as possible with the hat channel sitting in there vertically. Now you can either use a grinder or cut off wheel or anything you have available to shave down the edge. If I come to my passenger side here, in between my frame and my bed I'm going to have a bed support right here. Now I'm going to take a magnet to help me get my spacer in to my hat channel, get it lined up. Once I get it fairly close to where I need it lined up with that hole, I'm going to take a flat head screwdriver, I'm going to bend it into position making sure that I can reach all the way through. Now with our spacer blocks in place, I got a screwdriver going through so they won't go anywhere. Now I'm going to lift up my hitch and I'm going to slide my rail back into place, lining up all the holes. Once we have our rails in place and our holes lined up, here on the drivers side, the one with the spacer block. We're going to take that extra long carriage bolt and we're going to drop it into place. Now here on the passengers side we're going to take our long hex bolt and a flat washer. We're going to remove the screwdriver and drop it down into this slot. Now it may help if you have an extra set of hands underneath the truck with a screwdriver holding the spacer block in place. That way when you push the bolt through, you can push down on the screwdriver it'll go into place while the screwdriver comes out. Now we're just going to put the rest of our hardware in place. Just like before we're going to make sure that if it's laying on a low spot we're going to put that spacer in between. Now if we come over to our drivers side where our bolts come through. I'm going to remove this fastener here holding my harness onto my frame, that way I don't have to worry about it interfering or getting in the way. I'm just going to take a flat head screwdriver pry out on the clip and move it out of the way. Now this is going to be our drivers side bracket. It's going to be the larger of the two. We're going to line up the holes that are in the tabs here with the holes that are in the bracket. We're going to slide our bracket up into place. Then we can take our spacer blocks, just like before line them up with our bolts then we're going to come back with our half inch flange nuts and install it. We repeat the process for the other bolts as well. Now for the holes in the side of our frame, we're going to take our M14 bolts and our conical tooth washer. Again making sure that the teeth are facing towards our bracket and we can put those in place loosely. Now with this side down, we're going to repeat the same process on the other side. Now here on the passenger side, our bracket is smaller and we're only going to attach it to one point vertically and two points going into the frame. Now for the bolt going through out hat channel here, we're going to put in a spacer block followed by a flange nut. When it comes time to tighten these down, it's going to be easiest if we have an extra set of hands hold a wrench on the nut down here and we tighten it from up top. If we can reach in through here, we can slide our spacer block into place and tighten our nut up. We're going to go ahead and snug up our hardware. Now in the instructions they want us to tighten the rails to our brackets first and then come back and tighten our brackets to the frame. We're going to start with all the bolts going vertically and I'm just going to snug them up using a 3/4 inch socket. We're going to repeat that process for all the remaining bolts. With our rails tight, we can come back tighten up the bolts in our frame. Now we're going to come back and we're going to torque all of our bolts to the specified amount in the instructions. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining bolts. With everything in place, we can put our heat shield back up. Now we can go ahead and put our spare tire up and that'll finish up our installation. That'll finish up our look at the Curt custom fifth wheel installation kit, part number C16427-204 on our 2017 Ram 2500.

My Husband and I installed the Fifth Wheel Kit ourselves and it was easy. We followed the directions and had it done in an afternoon, just in time for camping. We went out camping about 6 times this year and the trailer pulls great. 574562

Before even starting the install I was sure to read the directions a couple of times to make sure this was something I wanted to attempt on my own. I hadn't installed a hitch before but had assumed since it was a custom kit it wouldn't be too difficult. The directions stated that the total install time for the diy'er was 180 mins. I read through and took note of all the tools I was going to need. What I would have REALLY appreciated was a "tools required" list at the top of the instructions. I thought I had all the tools needed but at the very end when you get to the rear rail you need a 7/8" bit for the bottom of the bed support. I advise you have one at the ready. I had to hone it out with my 9/16 which was a giant pain. Everything else went really smooth. On my particular application I had a real hard time torquing the front right bed bolt on the rear rail to spec (110ft-lbs) as the mount for a cross-bar makes it nearly impossible to fit a torque wrench in. (I ended up having to use 3/8" drive extensions to go up inside the bucket and torquing it from the bottom. Total time:(including a couple of breaks, meltdowns, and a bunch of swearing and a 2yr old hiding dad's parts) 180 mins. Touche' Curt Mfg., touche'... Experience level of installer: None This is something that the average person can do. Make sure to watch all the helpful videos here on etrailer.com, read through the directions before starting, and make sure you have all the necessary tools to help ensure your installation goes as smooth as possible. 121928

2015 Dodge Ram Pickup

Brackets and rails were of high quality and were a perfect fit on my 2015 Dodge Ram 2500 HD, using the factory frame 'jig' holes for attachment . INSTALLATION NOTES: I looked up eTrailer's installation Video on the Dodge-specific custom brackets (in this case on a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 HD). It was invaluable! It stated the task would take 1 and 1/2 hours for an expert; 3 to 4 hours for a novice. I am NOT an expert but have torn down and rebuilt an engine, replaced clutches and transmissions, and done brake jobs on my vehicles. Being admittedly slow because I want to be thorough (I wanted NO mistakes in drilling the holes needed into my new truck's bed), the task took about 3 days. THE ISSUE: Though the under-bed brackets were perfectly made, there are two differences between the 2014 Dodge shown in the video (which I suspect was Gas engine equipped) and my 2015 Dodge 2500 (Cummings Diesel). - CLEARANCE BETWEEN DIESEL FUEL TANK AND FRAME appeared to be MUCH less on my 2015 Dodge than the fuel tank on the 2014 Dodge (Gas?). The front left (in front of rear axle) frame bracket installation was WAY more difficult than in the video due to this clearance issue. A standard Torque wrench head with socket could not be fitted over the forward-most bolt due to this clearance issue between the Diesel fuel tank and the frame. I finally broke down and used a 'breaker' bar/socket combo and a piece of pipe to get that particular bolt tightened within a reasonable range of the proper torque. - The rear axle suspension in the 2014 Dodge installation in the video was different than my 2015 truck. A significant mounting bracket for the new torsion bar was attached to the right-rear portion of the axle. I was adamantly against temporarily removing it (not even sure if I could have -- I THINK it was welded in place). Again clearance issues made installation of the right rear bracket quite a challenge for me. Still I applaud eTrailer for making a high-quality kit that fits the bill! 310005

Haven't had a chance to use the hitch yet but I got it installed without too much trouble. It took about 4 hours to install, the frame mounting brackets and rails, at a leisurely pace. The unit seems to be very sturdy and it is certainly built heavy. I'm looking forward to testing it out soon. 652239

The install was pretty straight forward watched the video a couple of times too. I have a 2016 ram tradesman short box and the drivers front bracket was a little tighter then it looks on the video but a couple of scraped forearms and a couple of buckles later it was in. Well done gentleman. Fit was like a glove and I will buy again if I need too. 641484

Product is good. I had some issues on the installation on the drivers side of my ‘16 Ram 2500. The bolts didnt seem to be long enough for me to use the washer and nut. I consider myself pretty handy, I work on my own cars, I have a sufficient amount of tools and special tools. In the end I managed to get the rails installed. The rails are compatible with the Ram OEM M20 Hitch. Natalie was outstanding when I asked her about compatibility and she advised that Curt is the manufacturer of the Ram M20 hitch, Ram just rebrands it with their stickers. 569112

I had this kit installed in my 2014 RAM 2500. The installer said that it took much more time to install than they originally figured it would because of having to move the fuel lines etc. They said this little detail was not mentioned in the instructions. So, I'm glad I did not attempt to do it myself. The rails look and function great though. I am very pleased with the final result and would recommend this kit (just be aware that the installation is a bit more complicated than the instructions lead you to believe.) 408622

2016 Dodge Ram Pickup

I installed on a 2016 Ram 2500 Great Product from e-trailer. I would highly recommend e-trailer, they understand customer service, knowledgeable staff and prompt delivery. Also I highly recommend the Curt install kit, the project is not overly difficult and the video is quite good. I did find it was not necessary to remove the tail pipe on my truck. After completing the install I do have a couple of suggestions: I watched the install video a few times so thought I was lined up pretty good but I did not think about applying a rust preventative until after I drilled the holes so had to make a trip to the store (yes I know it should have been obvious). 1st suggestion: include some anti rust paint with the kit or at least offer to supply such. 2nd suggestion for Curt. Use hex head bolts instead of carriage. For the DIY guys laying on their backs in the driveway it is much easier to torque the bolts to 100lbs from the top. 322595

Arrived within 5 days of order. I would suggest watching install videos they helped. Took me a little longer to install ( about 3 hrs ) but took a couple breaks because temp was low thirtys and don't have heated garage. 322190

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel Installation Kit?

  • Can the Reese Goose Box be Used on a Short Bed 2016 Ram 2500
  • The correct Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter for a Lippert 1621 pin box is part # RP94716 for 16,000 lbs or part # RP94720 for 20,000 lbs. With that being said, it is not recommend to use the Reese Goose Box on a short bed truck due to limited turning clearance. They do make an offset gooseneck ball adapter for the Hide-A-Goose Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch part # 9467 on your 2016 Ram 2500, the 5" Offset Ball part # 19308 but this still is more than likely...

  • 5th Wheel Slider Hitch for 2016 Ram 2500 Diesel Short-Bed
  • Your 2016 Ram 2500 diesel certainly has the grunt required to tow a trailer that weighs half its rated towing capacity, but since you have a short-bed pickup you will need a slider type hitch that will give you the necessary clearance between the cab and trailer to make tight turns. If your short bed has the factory 5th wheel rail kit you can use the superb 20K B&W hitch # BWRVK3670 which drops right into the 4 pucks in the bed. This slider gives you a full 12-inches of travel to give...

  • Will Demco Hijacker Autoslide Hitch Fit Curt Fifth Wheel Rails for 2018 Ram 2500
  • Yes, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide that is designed for industry standard rail kits like what the part # C16427-204 provides will work great. You'd want the part # DM8550034 for an 18k hitch or the part # DM8550035 for a 21k hitch.

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Turning Point Pin Box
  • Like a Sidewinder, the Turning Point Pin Box has a rotating turret so the pivot point is no longer at the king pin in the hitch, it is 22 inches rearward; because of this it is strongly recommended that you use a fixed fifth wheel hitch. Using the slider would mean the trailer's weight would be pushed too far behind the axle of your truck as opposed to being over the axle or just forward of it, which can put added stress on the truck, hitch, and trailer. For a hitch I highly recommend...

  • Curt Base Rail Kit for 2018 Ram 2500 for Superglide 2700 5th Wheel Hitch
  • Above-bed 5th wheel base rails are all standardized so you can use any brand of base rail with your Pull-Rite SuperGlide 2700 hitch. ISRs, or industry standard rails, have common dimensions and work with all brands of hitch. I suggest the Curt kit # C16427-204 for your Ram 2500 with 6-1/2-foot bed. This is a custom kit that includes brackets that do not require drilling into your Ram's frame; it uses pre-existing holes for installation which saves a lot of time. Please refer to the linked...

  • Does the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch Only Fit Demco Base Rails
  • The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550035 referenced in your question is an excellent choice for your 2014 Ram 2500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed. As you mentioned, this 5th Wheel Hitch is compatible with the Demco Base Rail Kit # DM8552025-71, but it is also compatible with any industry standard, above-bed base rail kit. If you are not wanting to use the Demco Rails, I recommend looking at the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit # RP50054-58 or...

  • Can Curt 5th Wheel Base Rails Be Installed on 2017 Ram 2500 with Existing Gooseneck Hitch
  • Yes, in order to install a Curt Custom 5th Wheel Bracket Kit (or any other 5th wheel bracket kit) on your 2017 Ram 2500 your existing gooseneck hitch would need to be removed as both systems require the same mounting space on the frame rails. The correct Curt Rail Kit for your Ram is actually the part # C16427-204. The kit you were looking at is designed for earlier model years of the Ram 2500. The Curt Installation Kit will provide your truck with industry-standard, above-bed base...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ram 2500 without Factory Pucks
  • Since your fifth-wheel trailer is equipped with the Lippert Turning Point pin box you can go with a fixed hitch. The extended pivot point on the Turning Point eliminates the need for a sliding hitch that would otherwise be needed on short bed trucks like yours to provide cab clearance during sharp turns. For a hitch that will work great on your Ram and is compatible with the Turning Point I recommend the Curt A20 # C16140. This is an excellent hitch that features a fully articulating...

  • Industry Standard 5th Wheel Base Rail Kit for 2017 Ram 2500 Short Bed
  • The Blue Ox Super Ride hitch BXR7200 installs in industry-standard above-bed base rails, like the Reese rails shown in the linked photo. These standard rails are offered by many brands but you can use any one since they share the same dimensions. I suggest a custom-fit kit that will save you time on the install and reduce the amount of drilling required. The lowest-cost options are the B&W Base Rail Kit # BWRVK2602 and the Curt Base Rail Kit # C16427-204. Both fit the 6-1/2-foot bed...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit for a 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab
  • Assuming that your SuperGlide hitch is an ISR version that fits in industry standard rails you can use any of the custom installation kits available for the 2018 Ram 2500. Reese kit # RP50054-58 is a popular option. You will not have to drill into the truck frame for installation so install time is less than on universal or semi-custom kits. You could also use the similar B&W kit # BWRVK2602 or Curt kit # C16427-204. Again, no drilling into the frame is required. The easiest kit to...

  • Fifth Wheel Towing Capacity of 2018 Ram 2500 4WD with Short Bed, 6.4L V8 and 3.73 Axle Ratio
  • If your 2018 Ram 2500 4WD with a 6.4L V8 engine, short bed and 3.73 axle ratio is a Crew Cab your fifth wheel towing capacity is 12,630 lbs and if it is a Mega Cab it has a fifth wheel towing capacity of 12,240 lbs. This means that yes, you will be able to tow the fifth wheel trailer with a GVWR of nearly 12,000 lbs like you wanted. • Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 to Use Husky Fifth Wheel Hitch
  • It sounds like you actually have Husky above-bed fifth wheel rails in your 2000 Ram 2500 since Husky does not make an under-bed rail kit. All you would need to use your current hitch in your 2014 Ram 2500 is the correct Husky Rail Kit part # HT32556-686. This has been confirmed as a fit for your truck and would work well with your current hitch. However, I might have a better priced option for you to consider. • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch Options For 2015 Ram 2500 Truck With Short Bed
  • With the size of your new trailer I recommend a Sidewinder to replace the pin box. You can use the formula to calculate the distance you would get with a sliding fifth wheel hitch versus a Sidewinder, that will let you execute a 90 degree turn. The formula is (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab. (since you do not have a fifth wheel installed you can measure from about 1 or 2 inches in front of the center of the axle) B = Length...

  • I would recommend the Curt E16 5th Wheel Hitch, # 16516, and Installation Kit, # C16427-204, for your 2014 Ram 2500 Longhorn Mega cab when towing the your trailer. This sliding fifth wheel hitch has a gross tow weight rating of 16,000 pounds and a tongue weight rating of 4,000 pounds. • The Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Single Jaw - 21,000 lbs # DM8550045 is not a good option for your 2015 Ram short box with Ram Box. The issue with Ram Box is that it limits the ability to use a 5th wheel hitch because the boxes get in the way of the Pin Box on your trailer. The only option for Ram Box is to use a standard hitch (not a gooseneck adapted hitch) and then a Sidewinder Pin Box to move the turning point of the trailer back 22 inches to avoid...

You will need a slider hitch too since your truck bed is shorter than 8 feet. The A20 slider hitch part # C16541 is a great option with a 20k capacity, but if you wanted something that slid automatically as you make tight turns the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550035 would be your best option. • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit Recommendation for a 2015 Ram 2500 Short Bed
  • Yes, the Curt fifth wheel install kit part # C16427-204 that you referenced is designed to fit your 2015 Ram 2500 with a 6-3/4 foot bed. This kit will not require you to drill the frame of your truck at all either so it would work well for you. I attached an install video for the rail kit as well. • Fifth Wheel Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 with Rambox
  • I have a solution for your 5th wheel towing needs on your 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Rambox. I recommend to start with a fixed fifth wheel like the Curt # C16115 and the Installation Rails that go with this system are # C16427-204 they are custom fit for your truck. This will give us a rigid base to then attach a sidewinder to. You will need a sidewinder because the issue is the bed is more narrow on models that have the Rambox feature. With Curt base rail install kit # C16427-204 the position of the front-facing edge of the front base rail on a 6-foot bed will be 54-1/4-inches from the rear edge of the truck bed (not the tailgate) as shown in the linked diagram taken...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 with RamBox and 6-Foot Bed
  • A short bed truck by itself can pose a challenge for 5th wheel towing due to the limited front-to-back clearance between the truck cab and the trailer's overhang. When we add the Rambox feature we also add another complication: reduced side-to-side clearance. Hitch makers like Reese, Curt and B&W discourage use of 5th wheels in such trucks; that said, there are those that have satisfactorily installed 5th wheels anyway. The best solution for the turning clearance problem in such trucks...
