B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitch

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

Not only does this kit provide you with a sturdy, custom base for installing your Companion fifth-wheel trailer hitch in the bed of your truck, but it also doubles as one of the most recognizable gooseneck hitches on the market. This fifth wheel installation kit actually is the Turnoverball gooseneck hitch from B&W.

Gooseneck Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 30,000 lbs
  • Vertical load limit: 7,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

B&W Companion Installed in Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

With the B&W Turnoverball underbed gooseneck trailer hitch you get the best of both worlds. When you go to tow a gooseneck trailer, the Turnoverball creates a sturdy, dependable connection with your trailer. And when you're done towing, you can stow the ball upside down in the hitch to get full bed access and a clean appearance. When you're ready to tow your fifth wheel trailer, just install the Companion in the ball hole in place of the gooseneck ball and lock the post in place using the built-in handle. You can remove the fifth wheel when you're done towing, leaving your truck bed open once again.

Simple, Custom Installation

This kit is custom designed for your . The mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 3-1/2" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.

Once you have the brackets and center section installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the mounting post of the Companion (or the base of the gooseneck hitch ball).

Video Transcript for B and W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ram 2500

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ram 2500, we're going to be installing a custom under bed installation kit for 5th wheel trailer hitches, part number BWGNRK1384-5W. This 5th wheel installation kit is designed to let you install your B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches. The adapters are part numbers BWRVK3500 or part number BWRVK3400. The under bed design of the kit allows for full truck bed access and when you're ready it's under five minutes to convert your empty truck bed into a 5th wheel hitch.I'll start off by unlocking our B&W hitch and installing our 5th wheel adapter. We have ours preassembled, but you can adjust the uprights here depending on your truck and trailer accommodations. At this point, the hitch is ready to attach to a trailer.

There's a little clip here that you release. Basically, it's a safety pin. Then you swing the handle out and you can watch the jaws open, ready to back up onto your trailer.Once you're secure onto your trailer, you can reinstall the clip. Since the 5th wheel installation kit doubles as a gooseneck hitch, when you're not towing your 5th wheel, you can remove it. This frees up the hole to reinsert the hitch ball when you need it.Now, if you're trying to decide between a gooseneck or a bumper style trailer hitch, some of the main differences are that all of the weight is going to be on the back of your vehicle on your bumper style trailer hitch.

This is going to produce more sway on your trailer hauling it behind you and it's going to cause more oscillation from the back of your vehicle.Your gooseneck, on the other hand, is going to position all the weight over your rear axle. So this is going to reduce a lot of sway in your vehicle and trailer. It's going to allow for tighter turning radiuses, and it's going to allow you to haul greater capacities to be able to have a longer, heavier load in the back end. This is great for living quarters and other things. To begin our installation, we're going to need to make a few preparations. Get your spare tire out of the way if it's installed, and then we're going to get this heat shield out of the way so we have better access to start drilling for our gooseneck.

Using a 10mm socket, remove the three bolts on your heat shield here and the two bolts located on the other side of the heat shield here. And just sit this aside. We're going to go ahead and put a inaudible 00:02:18 in place so we can lower our exhaust out of our way. This will catch the exhaust to prevent any damage happening while lowering it. Go ahead and spray the hanger down with some lubricant.

This will make it easier to come off and just pry it out of the way. Now that we've got our heat shield out of the way, we can easily access the location we're going to be drilling for our gooseneck.Go ahead and take the template that comes in your kit, put it in the hole, then mark the middle. If you have a center punch that will fit in the hole, you can go ahead and punch it now. If not, you may need to mark it with something else so that you can punch it later. Now that we've made our mark where to drill, we're going to go ahead and use a center punch to ping that to make it easier upon drilling. Now that we've got our center punch, we're going to make a pilot hole using a 1/4" drill bit. Now that we've got our pilot hole drilled, we're going to use a 3-1/2" hole saw to allow the opening for our gooseneck to stick through our bed. Now that we've got our hole drilled, we're going to go ahead and clean this up here, so grab a Shop-Vac and get all that out of there. Now that we've got everything cleaned up, we're going to go back with some protective coating. You can use some gloss enamel just to prevent any rust in the future.Next we're going to take our plastic spacer and we're going to put it between our frame here and our bed. We need to come around up top, slide it over, and push it in there. Now, it might be necessary for you to use a screwdriver or other small tool to finish pushing it into place. Go ahead and get this centered. Now our spacer is properly in place.Next we're going to put our weld nuts into place. Use the angled handle to slide it up in there. Might have to tweak the fender a little bit to get it to go all the way. Now that you've got your handle on there, you want to go ahead and line up your nuts with your holes. You can use a screwdriver here to help center everything. You want the outsides to line up.Now on our driver's side, it's going to be the same process but you're going to have a harness in the way. I just take a screwdriver or body panel removal tool and pop these harness clips up out of the way so you can get your weld nuts in place. Now with the harness moved out of the way, we can slide our weld nuts in just like we did on the other side. Might have to move the fender out of the way a little bit. Then again center your weld nuts with the holes in the frame here. This is a good time to grab your harness and pull it back down and clip it into place. Now we can go ahead and put our gooseneck up into place. Make sure that when you're putting it up the hole's towards the front of the vehicle and the handle is on the driver's side. Now you take your large hex head bolts that's included in your kit. Line it up with the hole and your weld nuts and go ahead and get it started. Once you get one started, that'll hold that up, and then you can move on to your next bolt. Now you want to go back and snug your bolts up. You don't want to have them all the way tight, you want to have a little bit of play because we need to make sure that we're centered within our hole. You measure the distance between your center section and your frame. We're going to go ahead and use this spring here and make sure it's the same on both the passenger and driver side. Then you'll make any adjustments, pushing it left or right, as necessary. Now that we've got everything centered, go back and tighten them all the way down. With everything snugged up, go back and torque them to the specifications in your instructions.Next we're going to be installing our handle. Take your carriage bolts and slide them through the release mechanism onto the center carriage and take your handle, slide it up over the fuel tank, up over your frame. Slide it onto your carriage bolts and start your nuts. These are going to be the flange locknuts in your kit. It'll be two of them. Go back and tighten down your bolts using a 9/16 socket. Then go back and torque your bolts to the specifications in your instructions. We're going to drill out our safety chain mount locations now. Make sure that your pin is engaged and then insert your ball mount. This way your ball mount will stay raised up as it sits on the pin. We're going to use that with our template provided as a guide. Go ahead and slide that down over it and then refer to your vehicle in the gooseneck kit that you're installing to find the appropriate holes. Ours is 1384, so we'll be using these holes. Go ahead and mark your holes. Then again use your center punch. Make sure you drill straight. Now we can drill out our holes. We're going to be drilling it to a 1/2". However, I'm going to start with a 1/4" hole as the pilot hole to make it easier to drill through then we'll step it up to 1/2". A little lubrication makes the drilling process faster. You need to drill all the way through and repeat this for your remaining holes. With all of our pilot holes drilled, we'll now step it up to 1/2" and repeat that for your remaining holes. Now that we've got all our holes drilled, we'll go back and clean them up. Now you want to go back and use some black gloss spray paint to prevent any rust and corrosion from occurring in the future. With it being about a 1/2" diameter, you can poke your finger through a napkin. That'll make a pretty good template to keep the paint right on where you drilled. Now with our holes painted over and drilled, we can slide our U-bolts down and we'll be attaching them underneath. Now that we've got our U-bolts passed through our bed, we're going to take our four springs included. Take one of them with the wider side towards the top, slide it over your U-bolt, and then install your nut. Do this for the remaining three locations. Tighten them down using a 3/4" socket. Now with all of your hardware loosely installed, you're going to go back and tighten it up using a 3/4" socket until your nut is flush with the bottom of your U-bolt. Do that for the remaining bolts. Now we just need to put our handle sticker in place. Use a little bit of alcohol on a cloth to clean off your frame here so that way the adhesive will stick well. Then just place your sticker below your handle. Now that our hitch is fully installed, we're ready to reassemble our components we removed earlier. We'll put our exhaust back up and our exhaust heat shield back on. Then put your spare tire back up and re-installation is complete. Slide your ball mount in and re-engage the pin and you're ready to go.That completes our installation of the custom under bed installation kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches, Part Number BWGNRK1384-5W.

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (8 Customer Reviews)

Install a Companion fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed with this custom kit. Better than a traditional mounting kit, this setup doubles as a gooseneck hitch when the fifth wheel is removed, and the underbed design allows for full bed access.

Installation in 4 hours might be realistic for a shop, but my old tired bones required a bit more time. Everything lined up and fit my 2015 Ram 2500. The quality of the components are far superior to anything Chinese. I suggest air tools if you have them, and something to lift the 5th Wheel base into your truck bed unless you feel like a baddass today. I didn't run into any problems because I read the instructions BEFORE I started. Everything I needed to know was right there! 181544

  • What is the Best Truck for Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer
  • You are doing the right thing by doing the research first. There is a lot of conflicting information out there so let me break it down for you and I will provide some part recommendations at the end. Basically, if you want to tow a 5th wheel trailer, the best trucks are going to be long bed 3/4 or 1 tons like a Ford F-250/F-350, Chevy/GMC 2500/3500, or Ram 2500/3500. Half ton trucks could work but are not nearly as capable as the larger trucks. A long bed for sure is something you will...

  • Options for Increasing 5th Wheel Turning Clearance in 2014 Ram 2500 Shortbed
  • Thank you for all of your prior purchases from etrailer, including your B&W Companion Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W. A Sidewinder replacement pivoting pin box will not add stress to a 5th wheel trailer frame the way other types of towing adapters can, and as you noted it will provide 22-inches of additional turning clearance by having the trailer pivot point be at its rear turret assembly, rather than at the king pin itself. However, a Sidewinder cannot be used along with your Companion hitch. The...

  • Comparing The Ride Of Ram 2500 HD Versus 3500 HD For Towing And When Not Towing
  • The ride on the Ram 2500 HD will be more comfortable than the ride of the 3500 HD due to the coil suspension on the 2500 versus the leaf spring suspension on the 3500. With that being said, you will have more squat with the 2500 when the trailer is hooked up. You can put an aftermarket air bag system on the truck and deflate it to a minimal level when not towing to get a more comfortable ride. You could then inflate it to help when the truck is placed under a heavier load such as when...

  • Sliding 5th Wheel Hitches With Underbed Rails Compatible With 2016 and 2017 Chevy And Ram Short Beds
  • There are definitely options for underbed rails on 2016 and 2017 Chevy and Dodge short bed trucks. For the Chevy 6-1/2 foot bed, I recommend the Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1057-5W along with the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400-5W. This system allows you to use a 5th wheel hitch or a gooseneck hitch and will give you a clean bed when not in use. Another option is to use the...

  • Gooseneck or 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ram and Grand Design 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I looked up the BDS lift kit and it is a suspension lift which is good because that means the truck bed and frame are still the same distance apart from each other so you can install a hitch in the bed. If towing a 5th wheel trailer you will want a 5th wheel hitch but given your situation I do have a recommendation that will work as long as the 5th wheel trailer has the tapered front end for short bed trucks and as long as it has a pin box that is compatible with a Reese Goose Box. The...

  • Recommended Underbed Mounting Kit and Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2015 Ram 2500 Short Bed Truck
  • We do have a custom underbed installation kit, Item # BWGNRK1384-5W, that is confirmed to fit your 2015 Ram 2500, provided your vehicle includes rear coil spring suspension. My research indicates that all Ram 2500 models have rear coil springs, but it's best to confirm you have the springs to be sure. This kit is designed to work with the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, # BWRVK3400-5W. The Companion includes a built-in slider for clearance on short-bed trucks. It also has a weight...
