Forged, Self-Latching Jaw

Self-Latching Jaw

The one-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel hitch provides absolute security with its wraparound design. Increased jaw-to-king-pin contact results in not only a stronger connection, but less noisy rattling and stiff chucking as well.

The jaw is also always ready to receive, so you don't need to use the handle to open it before backing up toward your trailer. As long as the bail pin is removed from the latching handle, the jaw will accept the king pin as it enters the hitch.

Finally, the jaw is self-latching, so it will automatically secure your trailer's king pin when it moves into the jaw.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Pivot Bushings

In addition to the tight jaw tolerance, a close connection between the head and the pivot bushings further reduces rattle and movement. And because the pivot bushings are independent from the head, they can be tightened to ensure a strong connection over time.

King Pin Indicator Prevents High Pinning

King Pin Indicator

This M5 hitch features a built-in king pin indicator to ensure proper hookup. This indicator is located on the back of the head along with a V-shaped notch that are both visible from the cab of your truck. The V-notch is lined up with the jaw at the front of the hitch, and can be used as a guiding point to line the king pin up with the jaw as you back up your truck. The jaw also has an internal plate that keeps the king pin from entering if it is too high to enter safely. As a result, the king pin indicator will only change from red to green if the king pin is fully engaged in the jaw.

Easy-to-Use Latching Handle

Lever and Hitch

This hitch's handle is designed for smooth motion and effortless operation. It requires only 2 fingers to use and won't bind up as you pull. In addition, the handle is long, so it's easy to access from outside of your truck bed. And the ergonomic grip makes it comfortable to hold and pull from different angles.

Video Transcript for Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Review

Hey, everybody, how's it going Today, we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the line of Reese M5 fifth wheel trailer hitches for the GM factory prep package. So, our fifth wheel trailer hitch is gonna provide us with the physical connection between our truck and our fifth wheel trailer. So this is obviously an important job, therefore, it's critical we choose the right one for us that's gonna perform well. Let's go ahead and take a dive into this one to show you why it's a great option. This particular hitch here is gonna be designed for models that have the factory prep package, otherwise known as the pucks, and that's gonna be your four circular pucks in the truck bed with that center gooseneck hitch opening. So this is only compatible with the factory configurations for this so, if you have a clean truck bed without those pucks, this hitch unfortunately will not work, but there's plenty of other options for you.

So, the Talon Jaw design is one of my favorite things about the Reese M5, and basically what this is going to boil down to is this is gonna provide exceptional contact between the jaws of the fifth wheel hitch and the king pin of our trailer and what that does is that's gonna make for a nice, smooth towing experience. It's really gonna keep our trailer nice and planted. It's not gonna be chucking and jarring around because we have all that contact with the jaw here. All that contact is also gonna provide us a fair amount of security so we don't ever have to worry about the jaws breaking and our trailer becoming detached from the vehicle. And furthermore, we challenge all design is also gonna make for an extremely easy hookup because once we have the handle unlocked there, we can just back our trailer right up into the hitch.

We don't have to worry about opening the jaws. They're always gonna be open so, it's ready to couple. Now, on the back side of our hitch head, we're gonna get a nice little two-color indicator system which we can easily see from inside the driver's seat, inside the cab of the vehicle. This is pretty simple. We have red which is gonna let us know that our jaws are not locked and we have green which let us know that we are locked, and we're ready to take off down the road.

So, this is a pretty fairly simple and straightforward system. I could definitely see some of the people who are newer to towing a fifth wheel are surely gonna appreciate that but even if you've been towing for a long time, mistakes can happen, so it's nice to have this extra measure of security here. Now, after messing around with the hitch from a little bit, you're also gonna know this. It has a fully articulating head, and what I mean by that is the hitch can tilt back and forth and side to side. Now, this is gonna not only help us have a smoother towing experience 'cause it's gonna absorb a lot of the road shock from the trailer, but it's also gonna make hookup much easier 'cause if you're not on a completely level surface here, our head can pivot here to accommodate that trailer and that's also gonna be benefited here by the wide funnel.

You could easily back that king pin up in there. This hitch is very easy to hook the trailer up to which is one of the things that I really like about it. So another great feature about this hitch, it's kinda hard to see just at first glance, is that it actually has an offset design. Now, what this offset design is going to do is this is gonna push the nose of your trailer away from the cab on your vehicle, giving you more turning clearance. So, if you have a long bed truck that feature's probably not a real big deal to you guys, but for those shorted trucks out there which there's a lot of 'em, you guys are really gonna love that because it's gonna give you a lot more clearance there, making sure you don't have any accidental run-ins between your trailer and the truck. Now we're also gonna have three different hitch height settings here, depending on how we configure the legs to the center section. Having that adjustable hitch head height is really gonna ensure that you have the best possible towing experience because if the nose on the trailer is high or low, that could create issues with our towing so, allowing us to level that by adjusting the hitch head height is really just gonna make things much simpler for you guys there. A lot of the other hitches, I will say though, have this feature built in so, it's not necessarily a standout feature but it's one that you probably use with your other fifth wheel hitches that you're gonna look for in a new one and I'm glad to tell you this one does have it. So, if you think this hitch is a good fit for you, go ahead and stick around and we'll show you how to get it installed. So the first step your installation, we wanna get our center section out here in front of us. We also wanna get something to prop it up on so we have rooms to install our legs which is the next thing we need so there's gonna be one on either side and then we obviously need our hardware to attach the legs to the center section. Now let's come take a closer look at the side of this intersection so we can show you some of the adjustment holes. So here is our adjustment holes. We're gonna have three of these, so sets all the way across and we're gonna have these same three sets on the other side. So this is gonna allow us to adjust the hitch head height of our fifth wheel. So, if you're not sure how to pick out a set of holes, you need to do some measuring on your truck and trailer because it's really gonna be specific to that particular application. The end goal is going to be to make the trailer as level as possible while we're towing it so you will need to take some measurements on your truck and your trailer so you can ensure you're choosing the correct setting so your trailer can ride nice and level. So, if you're not sure how to measure, it's actually pretty easy. Go ahead and park your trailer on a nice flat level surface and then use the leveling jacks to level it out, then you're gonna measure from the ground to the bottom of the skid plate on the trailer and then you'll come over here to your truck, again, same thing, nice flat level ground, measure from the ground to the top of the bed and then the difference between those is the hitch head height setting we need to adjust here on our fifth wheel hitch. Now, once we have our correct setting, we're gonna go ahead and take our hex bolts here along with our conical tooth washer, make sure the teeth are facing the metal here on the hitch. We're gonna be coming from the inside like so then I'm gonna be lifting one of the legs up and on the inside, you're gonna see these little threaded bosses here, so these are actually gonna be what installs into the threaded part of the bolt. So they can be kind of hard to get started but just go ahead and begin threading them in. So I've got one in there, now we're gonna do that same thing on the other side, make sure you're obviously using these same set of holes there. Next, we'll take a 24-millimeter socket and go ahead and snug up those bolts. Now we have to tighten them from the inside and it can be kinda hard to get a tool in there so, I recommend a six-inch extension with a short-well socket or a deep well with a three inch, really doesn't matter it. You just go ahead and begin snugging up both of these bolts now. Now, depending on the capacity of your fifth wheel hitch, you may or may not get some extra hardware or kit. There's gonna be a separate baggy with two of these bolts. If you do have them, we'll go ahead and install them here into this third hole. These are a little bit different because this side has a nut. There isn't any sort of welded bosses on the actual hitch. We'll just go ahead and snug this one up now. So now that we've got both legs on, we can go ahead and torque down our hardware to the amount specified in your instructions. Now we're just about ready to set our hitch into position but before we do that, we need to go ahead and unlock the handles so on either side here, you're gonna have these little clips, simply pull those out and then your handles are gonna spread out to the inside like so. Next, we'll go ahead and take our assembly here and go ahead and set it into the prep package here in our truck bed. Now that we have our base into position here, what we're gonna do is we're gonna come to each of our four handles here. We're gonna try to close them. So you can see there, I'm able to close this one pretty easy without much resistance here and what we're really looking for is sort of a tension fit so, we want it to be tight in regards to closing the handle but we don't want it to be so tight that we can't close it so, we can actually adjust the tension of each of our four handles so go ahead, take some time, try to close each of them, sort of gauge the tightness just by feel and actually all of these feel pretty good. It's just this one that's a little bit loose so I think I'm actually gonna go ahead and tighten this one up. In order to do that, it's very easy. We're gonna have a little pin and clip on side here on our castle nut, like that. You'll go simply take that off and then we can tighten or loosen our castle nut as needed to increase or decrease the tension in our handle. So we're gonna go ahead and knock that out for each of our four sides here and make sure we get a nice tight friction fit for each of our handles. So now that we have the tension where we want it on each of our four sides, we'll go ahead and close all the handles here and then we'll lock them into position using our pin and clip. Next, we're gonna take our head here and go ahead and set it onto our center section. So once we get the head on the center section here, we need to go ahead and secure it with these pins so in order to do this, they're actually kinda tucked back up underneath there. You actually have to push down on the head to align that circular hole there. Once you do that, you should be able to slip the pin through this, can be kind of challenging. Sometimes it even helps to sit on the head. And then on the other side, you're gonna take your clip to lock it in place. Once we get this side done, we'll just do that same thing over on the other side. Now, lastly, we're gonna be installing our handle so this is just gonna slide on like so, line everything up, drop one of your carriage bolts in and then on the bottom side, we'll be securing that with a split lock washer and a hex nut. Once I get it threaded on there, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Now, I am using a 13-millimeter socket for this. So now we got one in, we're just gonna do that same thing for our other hole here. And we'll just finish this up with our locking pin here, go ahead and install like that and then this little ring is actually going to thread on to that opening. And that's gonna do it today for our looking installation at the line of Reese M5 fifth wheel trailer hitches for the GM factory prep package..

Tried to install this on a 2001 Chevy Silverado 3500, dual rear wheel, long bed, 4x4, diesel engine truck. The clamp style mounting simply does not work. The ONLY way I can see this working is by drilling added holes in the frame of the truck at the front end of the side plates. This is because of a bend in the frame at the clamp location. Also at this location the frame is boxed in and any bolt holes will be hidden. Bolts would have to fished in with bolt wires.

I see that you are stuck on some parts of this installation. I have gotten in contact with one of our technicians and they had mentioned that you should be able to find what you need in the instructions on page 5. https:www.reeseprod.comproduct-assetsinstallN30926.pdf

The installation video was great and assembling the hitch went very well. I have a tonneau cover and it mentioned that you may need to place the handle upside down. I actually attached mine right side up and just tilted the hitch to that side and had plenty of space to close the cover.

Overall I’m happy with how the M5 functions. The assembly instructions were a little vague which meant I had to do it twice. I am disappointed in how the side accent panels are (were) attached. ALL the cheap little panel fasteners were broken and so I’m operating without them. I’ll keep the nylon spacers and use bolts instead of that plastic garbage. I would have sent it back if it were not for taking delivery of my camper the next day.

I have used your product for many years and have always been very happy. On the installation and assembly I have the following comments. To qualify myself, I spent many years running facilities that builds equipment for distribution all over the world.

Someone needs to have a discussion with your assembly Supervisor and Technicians about installing the cotter pins on the crown nuts. They obviously KNOW they are going to have to be removed to adjust the BY HAND tightness that has to be done during the installation process because they send (4) extra cotter pins for replacement purposes. I would recommend that the assembler or technician bend the pin just enough to keep it in the CROWN NUT DURING SHIPPING with an explicit WARNING that states "FULLY SET COTTER PINS AFTER FINAL HAND TIGHTNING ADJUSTMENT". The way mine came in, It was a pure pain in the ass to get them out.... the technician had hammered them flat to the top of the bolt. If I were your company, I would be concerned about the people that did not adjust the puck clearance because of the pain in the ass it is to get the pins out. (I just happened to have all the tool to do this, I'm sure a lot of people don't). Apparently your QC department only spot checks the pull handles for fitment on the slide plate. I had to open mine up to make it fit. Also, you could use prevailing torque nuts for connecting this arm and do away with the lock washer. I would say the device is very good as it is now. It would be Fantastic with more thought given for the installer concerning the cotter pin issue. I have looked at many of the Ratings and it seems the cotter pin issue is the number 1 issue. The paint on the threads is common on everything that is powder coated. I hope this helps your company. Oh, I changed my rating to a 5 star because I really like the final product

This would be a three but etrailer's customer service is excellent. Everyone I've dealt with has been exceptional.

Reese needs to get their act together. Three month backorder (okay COVID-19 has everyone backed up). Finally get the order and the release handle grip is destroyed, just crumbled almost like it was cooked. I have to adjust the pucks, which is expected, but Reese installed the Carter pins, which are a [beast] to remove in order to adjust the puck, suggestion Reese just leave them out for the installer to install. The the final [blow] from Reese on top of their otherwise great paint job, the bolt holes for the assembly are filled with paint, Reese howabout running a thread chase through these threads so the installer doesn't risk cross threading the bolt, it's just the small things that would make an otherwise outstanding hitch better.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

After a lot of research, I chose the Reese M5. The design is great. Assembly was a breeze, and it installs and removes very easily. The fitment with my 2019 Silverado puck system is perfect. I am much more comfortable with the single jaw hitch and with the M5's Easy Latching Handle, its a breeze to hitch and unhitch. etrailers price made it an even easier decision. Sometimes a lower price means a lower quality. Absolutely not the case here with etrailer. Couldn't be more happy with this purchase, Reese and etrailer

Comments
This is my first fifth wheel so it makes sense that it is my first 5th wheel hitch. Well, I couldnt be happier with the M5. It is very user friendly. The Red Green indicator gives me peace of mind when hitching up and knowing I am securely locked in. I am in the construction trades and need the full bed of my truck frequently. Removing the M5 is a breeze whenever I need to haul or transport something. I would buy again and definitely recommend the M5. 100 Satisfied. Thanks Reese and etrailer.

Installed into a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 AT4. Assembly was fairly straightforward. Shipping was fast. I haven't used it yet, but this is my second Reese hitch. I purchased this one because of the always ready to receive option, and the locked not locked indicator.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I want my B&W back. Not happy at all with this, and etrailer customer service was just as bad. The locking indicator was broke when it came out of the box. I contacted etrailer, they said they would contact the manufacturer, well 10 days later still haven't heard back. Also the locking mechanism has a bolt that goes through into the ouck system. That bolt has 1 side flat, to allow for posistive placement, well reese decided it would be fun to install this 90 degrees the wrong way, and not align the flat side of the bolt up with the notch in the handle. So now to to remove it, the threads will be trashed, and or the positive placement will slip some, if I just twist it to align. Horrible Q and A on Reese's part, and horrible customer service on etrailers part, oh and I am a reseller for etrailer, so I look bad as well.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We are so very pleased with our 27K hitch! The order process was easy and delivery was very fast. We have used a Reese hitch for years now. We just upgraded our fifth wheel RV and it wieghs in at 16K our old hitch was an 18K hitch so we were within 2K of max weight. We felt that that was too close so we went big, it feels (pulls) better and I feel more safe knowing that we have plenty of hitch. Thank you for such great products.

Installed in a 2018 GMC 3500 LB SRW

Overall
it was really easy to put together. Its light enough move in and out and very sturdy. I did not have a clearance issue with the Backflip cover regarding the stock handle. See pics.

Just a heads up, I had an issue with the threading in the legs, etrailer was very understanding and sent me out replacements supper fast. I contacted Reese regarding paint guncked up in the threading and they were aware of the issue, they recommended running a wire brush or a tap to clean it out.

Comments
One year later. No issues. I get complemens about how easy the hitch is to use, the ability to slide stuff under it, and how much room I still have in the bed with the hitch in. Would buy again.

Great hitch! Went together as per the instructions, pulls our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel great. Love the positive "Green" when the pin is in place as well as the wrap around jaw, real selling points for me.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I recently purchased a Reese M5 20K hitch for my new Silverado 3500HD, Crew Cab, 8’ bed. As usual, Etrailer pricing was very good and with free shipping to boot. The hitch arrived via UPS in just a few days after placing the order.

Following the detailed instructions provided by Reese, the install into the factory “puck” system, was fairly straight forward. However, a word of caution concerning the install. There are 4 15/16” bolts that need to be torqued to 220-foot pounds and are somewhat difficult to get to. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a torque wrench that would accommodate the recommended foot pounds of torque.

Also, you may have an issue if you need to place the hitch at its highest position. The release handle might protrude above the bed rails of your truck in this position. This will be a problem if you have a bed cover. Reese is/was well aware of this issue and sells an after-market handle that will correct this issue. Etrailer lists this handle on their Web page.

Instructions were pretty good, except I didn’t notice that you had to put the Reese sign facing the back of the bed of the truck. I had to take it a part and turn 180 degrees. also the indicator coming on green is not working correctly. I have to take the top part off to see where it’s hanging up. but it worked fine telling back-and-forth. I just didn’t have a green indicator when I towed.

Comments
You mentioned that the green indicator is not working for you. I wanted to see if you could send a picture of the 5th wheel when it is hooked up the trailer to show where the indicator is not showing.

Hi Jenny, Thanks for replying. I have already talked to Reese and have fixed the problem. The greenred indicator pops into place and it had slipped out a little. Thanks again.

It's a little heavy but manageable for the average fellers. I pieced it together in the bed of my truck as it will be a permanent fixture and as the installation brochure pointed out. They did paint the threaded holes witch could make installation of bolts a little time consuming but with my 1/2" impact it was a breeze, also was the 220 fps of torque with a 4" extension and a torque wrench rental from auto zone witch is free. The castle nuts with the cutter pins were set right but one, removed the one as they did provide 4 extra. Took me about 45 minutes to assemble. Be sure to grease top plate so that thier is no bind. Very happy as this is my very first 5th wheel hitch install and hooks with ease and the green/red indicator is great, and tows nice.

I can't give a fair review as we've not installed it yet but after watching YouTube videos and reading reviews this is what we choose. I also called and asked questions before I ordered.

Now as far as etrailer goes, I'd give it 5 stars as we've ordered before in the past and never had any major issues. This 5th wheel arrived in great shape and even if didn't, it would be the shipper not etrailer.

Once we have it installed and have used it, I'll post an updated rating.

Thank you etrailer!

Awesome hitch! I had to upgrade from an 18,000 lb hitch to a 27,000 for a larger toy hauler.
I really like the newer latching system on this hitch.
Ordering and shipping was painless.
Thanks Etrailer!

Hitch was fairly easy to put together. Had to leave bolts loose until I had it in the puck system. Was hard to get out until I used it a few times. Pulling a 40 foot 5th wheel that weights 12000 lbs. empty. Rubber handle grip was the only bad thing. Deteriated and fell apart. Still looking for a replacement.

I had always been a BIG B&W fan, but having heard about this hitch and it being cheaper, with a higher rating.... I decided to give it a try. Im really glad I did, as it takes up far less space in the bed than my old B&W did.

I did have an issue where one leg's welded, threaded insert was cock-eyed and the bolt didnt thread in.
etrailer, being the wonderful specialists they are, sent me a new leg kit ASAP.

My only issue thus far with the hitch is the rubber handle grip cracked and split, after sitting in my shop all winter in the cold. Not sure if thats normal, but it doesnt bother me enough that I remember it even 5 mins after using the hitch.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I had to order my truck without the factory hitch and puck system because of a shortage at Ford and the factory kit is made by Reese. So I ordered it from etrailer and when the truck arrives I’ll have the dealership install the puck part. Since I have the parts it’s just 4.5 hours labor and done.I can put the hitch itself together and I’ll be ready to go. I used to drive commercial truck and trailer and I like the fact that I don’t have to unlock it to hitch up the fifth wheel. It’s all ways ready to lock in.

I am very happy with the ordering process- Pam made sure I got what I need.
The only negative thing is the packaging- the two leg parts hit each other inside the box and the paint is gone. That is an issue on Reese not etrailer.

Customer Service will reach out to you. It is important to cover any bare metal with anti-corrosive paint to prevent premature rust. Here are more tips in this help article:

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Hitch assembly was fairly straightforward, took less than an hour. Did have to purchase a torque wrench since the one I had only went to 150 ft lbs. Figured I'd purchase it so I could keep it in the truck to make any adjustments, if required, and check that bolts remain torqued to xxx ft lbs over time. Had to make two small adjustments when I put it in the puck system, which was easy to do. The red/green indicator had popped out of the head unit. I figured out that it just needed to be popped back in to position. Haven't towed with it yet so I can't comment on that at this time. Hitch is beefy and I doubt will not be a problem handling our 5th wheel. So far I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Fast shipping, excellent quality of workmanship. Very slight chucking with our 2019 fifth wheel toy hauler. The green indicator for lockup works flawlessly and will let you know by staying partial red if not fully engaged.
