Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Tried to install this on a 2001 Chevy Silverado 3500, dual rear wheel, long bed, 4x4, diesel engine truck. The clamp style mounting simply does not work. The ONLY way I can see this working is by drilling added holes in the frame of the truck at the front end of the side plates. This is because of a bend in the frame at the clamp location. Also at this location the frame is boxed in and any bolt holes will be hidden. Bolts would have to fished in with bolt wires.

Comments
I see that you are stuck on some parts of this installation. I have gotten in contact with one of our technicians and they had mentioned that you should be able to find what you need in the instructions on page 5. https:www.reeseprod.comproduct-assetsinstallN30926.pdf

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have used your product for many years and have always been very happy. On the installation and assembly I have the following comments. To qualify myself, I spent many years running facilities that builds equipment for distribution all over the world. Someone needs to have a discussion with your assembly Supervisor and Technicians about installing the cotter pins on the crown nuts. They obviously KNOW they are going to have to be removed to adjust the BY HAND tightness that has to be done during the installation process because they send (4) extra cotter pins for replacement purposes. I would recommend that the assembler or technician bend the pin just enough to keep it in the CROWN NUT DURING SHIPPING with an explicit WARNING that states "FULLY SET COTTER PINS AFTER FINAL HAND TIGHTNING ADJUSTMENT". The way mine came in, It was a pure pain in the ass to get them out.... the technician had hammered them flat to the top of the bolt. If I were your company, I would be concerned about the people that did not adjust the puck clearance because of the pain in the ass it is to get the pins out. (I just happened to have all the tool to do this, I'm sure a lot of people don't). Apparently your QC department only spot checks the pull handles for fitment on the slide plate. I had to open mine up to make it fit. Also, you could use prevailing torque nuts for connecting this arm and do away with the lock washer. I would say the device is very good as it is now. It would be Fantastic with more thought given for the installer concerning the cotter pin issue. I have looked at many of the Ratings and it seems the cotter pin issue is the number 1 issue. The paint on the threads is common on everything that is powder coated. I hope this helps your company. Oh, I changed my rating to a 5 star because I really like the final product

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This would be a three but etrailer's customer service is excellent. Everyone I've dealt with has been exceptional. Reese needs to get their act together. Three month backorder (okay COVID-19 has everyone backed up). Finally get the order and the release handle grip is destroyed, just crumbled almost like it was cooked. I have to adjust the pucks, which is expected, but Reese installed the Carter pins, which are a [beast] to remove in order to adjust the puck, suggestion Reese just leave them out for the installer to install. The the final [blow] from Reese on top of their otherwise great paint job, the bolt holes for the assembly are filled with paint, Reese howabout running a thread chase through these threads so the installer doesn't risk cross threading the bolt, it's just the small things that would make an otherwise outstanding hitch better.

Thanks for your words. Customer Service will reach out to you about the broken handle.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

After a lot of research, I chose the Reese M5. The design is great. Assembly was a breeze, and it installs and removes very easily. The fitment with my 2019 Silverado puck system is perfect. I am much more comfortable with the single jaw hitch and with the M5's Easy Latching Handle, its a breeze to hitch and unhitch. etrailers price made it an even easier decision. Sometimes a lower price means a lower quality. Absolutely not the case here with etrailer. Couldn't be more happy with this purchase, Reese and etrailer

Comments
This is my first fifth wheel so it makes sense that it is my first 5th wheel hitch. Well, I couldnt be happier with the M5. It is very user friendly. The Red Green indicator gives me peace of mind when hitching up and knowing I am securely locked in. I am in the construction trades and need the full bed of my truck frequently. Removing the M5 is a breeze whenever I need to haul or transport something. I would buy again and definitely recommend the M5. 100 Satisfied. Thanks Reese and etrailer.

Installed into a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 AT4. Assembly was fairly straightforward. Shipping was fast. I haven't used it yet, but this is my second Reese hitch. I purchased this one because of the always ready to receive option, and the locked not locked indicator.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Overall I’m happy with how the M5 functions. The assembly instructions were a little vague which meant I had to do it twice. I am disappointed in how the side accent panels are (were) attached. ALL the cheap little panel fasteners were broken and so I’m operating without them. I’ll keep the nylon spacers and use bolts instead of that plastic garbage. I would have sent it back if it were not for taking delivery of my camper the next day.

Comments
I have reached out to the manufacturer and they are shipping out new fasteners. I will email you the tracking information.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We are so very pleased with our 27K hitch! The order process was easy and delivery was very fast. We have used a Reese hitch for years now. We just upgraded our fifth wheel RV and it wieghs in at 16K our old hitch was an 18K hitch so we were within 2K of max weight. We felt that that was too close so we went big, it feels (pulls) better and I feel more safe knowing that we have plenty of hitch. Thank you for such great products. Jason and Patricia

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Installed in a 2018 GMC 3500 LB SRW Overall it was really easy to put together. Its light enough move in and out and very sturdy. I did not have a clearance issue with the Backflip cover regarding the stock handle. See pics. Just a heads up, I had an issue with the threading in the legs, etrailer was very understanding and sent me out replacements supper fast. I contacted Reese regarding paint guncked up in the threading and they were aware of the issue, they recommended running a wire brush or a tap to clean it out.

Comments
One year later. No issues. I get complemens about how easy the hitch is to use, the ability to slide stuff under it, and how much room I still have in the bed with the hitch in. Would buy again.

Great hitch! Went together as per the instructions, pulls our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel great. Love the positive "Green" when the pin is in place as well as the wrap around jaw, real selling points for me.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I want my B&W back. Not happy at all with this, and etrailer customer service was just as bad. The locking indicator was broke when it came out of the box. I contacted etrailer, they said they would contact the manufacturer, well 10 days later still haven't heard back. Also the locking mechanism has a bolt that goes through into the ouck system. That bolt has 1 side flat, to allow for posistive placement, well reese decided it would be fun to install this 90 degrees the wrong way, and not align the flat side of the bolt up with the notch in the handle. So now to to remove it, the threads will be trashed, and or the positive placement will slip some, if I just twist it to align. Horrible Q and A on Reese's part, and horrible customer service on etrailers part, oh and I am a reseller for etrailer, so I look bad as well.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I recently purchased a Reese M5 20K hitch for my new Silverado 3500HD, Crew Cab, 8’ bed. As usual, Etrailer pricing was very good and with free shipping to boot. The hitch arrived via UPS in just a few days after placing the order. Following the detailed instructions provided by Reese, the install into the factory “puck” system, was fairly straight forward. However, a word of caution concerning the install. There are 4 15/16” bolts that need to be torqued to 220-foot pounds and are somewhat difficult to get to. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a torque wrench that would accommodate the recommended foot pounds of torque. Also, you may have an issue if you need to place the hitch at its highest position. The release handle might protrude above the bed rails of your truck in this position. This will be a problem if you have a bed cover. Reese is/was well aware of this issue and sells an after-market handle that will correct this issue. Etrailer lists this handle on their Web page.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

It's a little heavy but manageable for the average fellers. I pieced it together in the bed of my truck as it will be a permanent fixture and as the installation brochure pointed out. They did paint the threaded holes witch could make installation of bolts a little time consuming but with my 1/2" impact it was a breeze, also was the 220 fps of torque with a 4" extension and a torque wrench rental from auto zone witch is free. The castle nuts with the cutter pins were set right but one, removed the one as they did provide 4 extra. Took me about 45 minutes to assemble. Be sure to grease top plate so that thier is no bind. Very happy as this is my very first 5th wheel hitch install and hooks with ease and the green/red indicator is great, and tows nice.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Hitch was fairly easy to put together. Had to leave bolts loose until I had it in the puck system. Was hard to get out until I used it a few times. Pulling a 40 foot 5th wheel that weights 12000 lbs. empty. Rubber handle grip was the only bad thing. Deteriated and fell apart. Still looking for a replacement.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I had always been a BIG B&W fan, but having heard about this hitch and it being cheaper, with a higher rating.... I decided to give it a try. Im really glad I did, as it takes up far less space in the bed than my old B&W did. I did have an issue where one leg's welded, threaded insert was cock-eyed and the bolt didnt thread in. etrailer, being the wonderful specialists they are, sent me a new leg kit ASAP. My only issue thus far with the hitch is the rubber handle grip cracked and split, after sitting in my shop all winter in the cold. Not sure if thats normal, but it doesnt bother me enough that I remember it even 5 mins after using the hitch.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I had to order my truck without the factory hitch and puck system because of a shortage at Ford and the factory kit is made by Reese. So I ordered it from etrailer and when the truck arrives I’ll have the dealership install the puck part. Since I have the parts it’s just 4.5 hours labor and done.I can put the hitch itself together and I’ll be ready to go. I used to drive commercial truck and trailer and I like the fact that I don’t have to unlock it to hitch up the fifth wheel. It’s all ways ready to lock in.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

etrailer communication and shipping is 5 stars. Below is the 3 star review of the product and packaging. Packaging: I received 3 boxes in the shipment. 1.) GM specific Legs - The zip tie holding the legs together in the box was broken so they were bouncing around in the box. The legs were scratched and one had come through the box in shipping. Cosmetic damage. 2.) 20k Center Section - Well packaged and no visible damage. I wasn’t sure if this was a refurbished center section because there are wear marks on the powder coating where the head sits. May have been from product testing. 3.) Hitch Head Piece - Well packaged and no damage to the handle. Like others in the reviews section, the threaded holes on the legs were powder coated too heavily for the bolts to thread. I had to clean off the powder coating before I could get the bolts to thread properly. If you try and force them without cleaning the powder coating off, you may damage the bolts and legs.

Comments
I would recommend using a Rust-Oleum paint on the legs to prevent rust.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

As other reviews have pointed out, Reese didn't run a chaser through the threads as they're all gummed up with the paint/powder coat. Real pain to clean them out as a tap that large isn't usually in most people's tool box. I had to adjust one of the castle nuts requiring that the cotter pin be removed which took about 30 mins of banging on it. I've never experienced a cotter pin that hard to remove. I would have preferred that they not install the pins at the factory. For these reasons they lose a star in this review. The hitch is robust and once installed there is no slack or chatter once engaged in the Ford Puck system. The actuation of the handle/jaw is smooth. The handle will fit under a Super Duty F-450 tonneau cover as long as you pivot the head to the left to lower it.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Instructions were pretty good, except I didn’t notice that you had to put the Reese sign facing the back of the bed of the truck. I had to take it a part and turn 180 degrees. also the indicator coming on green is not working correctly. I have to take the top part off to see where it’s hanging up. but it worked fine telling back-and-forth. I just didn’t have a green indicator when I towed.

Comments
You mentioned that the green indicator is not working for you. I wanted to see if you could send a picture of the 5th wheel when it is hooked up the trailer to show where the indicator is not showing.
