Forged, Self-Latching Jaw

Self-Latching Jaw

The one-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel hitch provides absolute security with its wraparound design. Increased jaw-to-king-pin contact results in not only a stronger connection, but less noisy rattling and stiff chucking as well.

The jaw is also always ready to receive, so you don't need to use the handle to open it before backing up toward your trailer. As long as the bail pin is removed from the latching handle, the jaw will accept the king pin as it enters the hitch.

Finally, the jaw is self-latching, so it will automatically secure your trailer's king pin when it moves into the jaw.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Pivot Bushings

In addition to the tight jaw tolerance, a close connection between the head and the pivot bushings further reduces rattle and movement. And because the pivot bushings are independent from the head, they can be tightened to ensure a strong connection over time.

King Pin Indicator Prevents High Pinning

King Pin Indicator

This M5 hitch features a built-in king pin indicator to ensure proper hookup. This indicator is located on the back of the head along with a V-shaped notch that are both visible from the cab of your truck. The V-notch is lined up with the jaw at the front of the hitch, and can be used as a guiding point to line the king pin up with the jaw as you back up your truck. The jaw also has an internal plate that keeps the king pin from entering if it is too high to enter safely. As a result, the king pin indicator will only change from red to green if the king pin is fully engaged in the jaw.

Easy-to-Use Latching Handle

Lever and Hitch

This hitch's handle is designed for smooth motion and effortless operation. It requires only 2 fingers to use and won't bind up as you pull. In addition, the handle is long, so it's easy to access from outside of your truck bed. And the ergonomic grip makes it comfortable to hold and pull from different angles.

This will be Part 1 of a 2 part review. Part 1 will cover unboxing, assembly and installation. So the hitch arrived yesterday. 3 undamaged boxes (Good). Unboxing and parts inventory revealed a cracked handle grip on the head. Contacted Etrailer CS... no parts available until 9/21. it must be a common problem with this hitch since the CS rep knew exactly what my problem was. This won't prevent use but it's a unnecessary headache. Now THE REAL FUN begins! Attempting to thread the 4 bolts that attach the legs to the center section. THREADS WERE POWDER COATED. Spent the rest of the afternoon gradually tightening and untightening the bolts to clear the threads of coating. tedious and unnecessary process tighten the bolt a little... back it out... blow out the debris... drop of oil and repeat. Eventually broke out my pneumatic impact wrench. Finally got the threads cleared. It weighs quite a bit and I highly recommend you have a friend. I was alone and ended up setting the center section on a pair of jack stands at the approximate desired height (BTW had to call Etrailer tech support to get the height adjusting starting and ending dimensions since the supplied directions only tell you that there is 4 inches of vertical adjustment not what they are and what hole matches what dimension. Etrailer was great throughout this ordeal), just to get the bolts started and snugged (not torqued yet). Speaking of torque... 220 ft/lbs YIKES!!! My wrench only goes up to 150. I took the hitch down to my local garage and a very kind mechanic torqued to the required 220 ft/lbs. Gave him a $20 for his trouble. Now to setting it in the OEM pucks and adjusting the tension on the leg locks. Unit ships with cotter pins installed in the castle nuts. THEY WERE JAMMED IN TIGHT AND ALREADY BENT AND WOULDN'T SIMPLY PULL OUT ONCE STRAIGHTENED. Had to cut them off with a dremel. Fortunately Reese supplies you with 4 new ones. So after 2 days the legs and the center section are assembled and installed according to the specs. Later on day 2... time to install the head. Apparently the hitch had a common problem with the "Ready to Tow" indicator falling off. There was a "field fix" kit included with the head. It consisted of a screw and washer... it was a real pain to install... since you need three hands to stabilize the part and drive the screw... seems they could have just done that in the manufacturing process. another unnecessary headache. Finally... after 2 full days it's all lubricated, assembled and installed in the truck. Next step is testing the hitching and unhitching process and its first trip, planning 700 mile trip at the end of August...That will be Part 2. Wish I could give it a higher rating on assembly, installation but it performs poorly in that aspect. My previous CURT 16k hitch went together in 30 min with no problems whatsoever. I put 3,000 miles on that Curt before I got a bigger and heavier rig, thus the upgrade to 20k. Hoping the hitching, towing and unhitching experience with this Reese allows me to upgrade my overall rating. Stay tuned.

The 5th wheel trailer doesn't easily detach from the hitch. It takes a lot of work to get it to unhook with the lever. Definitely a 2 person job to unhook.

Awsome purchase! It was easy enough to put together, hooks up very easily to a 37ft camper & small enough that it can stay in the truck at all times & fits under the bed cover. Would definitely recommend this product. The only issue we had was the blue handle cover was broken when we received but etrailer sent us a new one w/ no problem.

Overall this hitch is excellent. One very minor thing to complain about, the grip on the Handle tour within a few times of using. Also I noticed rust stains running/dripping down from up inside the head. I will investigate this further to see exactly what is rusting.

John, thanks for the review. The manufacturer does offer a limited lifetime warranty for these products as long as you have been maintaining your hitch. You can view the maintenance schedule in the instructions on page 3.

Fantastic hitch, worked well with our 15,000lb Carri-Lite on its first 350 mile trip. Fast delivery, arrived 1 day early and all the boxes were un-damaged. Dropped into my F350 dually easily! The only issue has been noted by other buyers, Reese decided to put the cotter pins in and bend them over, fortunately they supply 4 more as you need to set it for your own truck. Removing them was hard I ended up using the metal fatigue approach by bending one arm of the cotter pin repeatedly until it broke off. All went well after that.

When we got this hitch and tried to put it together, all the thread holes were powder coated and we couldn’t assemble the hitch. We contacted etrailer, explained the issue. We were sent new pieces to replace the ones that wouldn’t work. When they arrived, they too had powder coating in all the holes and weren’t able to be used. So we sent ALL of the Reece 5th wheel hitch and extra pieces back and ordered a B&W hitch and love it! We’ve never had an issue with it!! We won’t be purchasing a Reece again.

Hitch works great. Only issue is the green/red indicator falls apart during assembly and is difficult to get back into place. But I've used it more than 20 times now and it stayed in place. Also the top plate is getting some pretty good scratches in it, even though I use a teflon pad.

2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty

Shipment and fit worked out well. With that said; my goodness who the heck put the cotter pins in for the adjuster castle nuts. I spent an hour removing all 4. All for needed to be adjusted for the puck system. But, I've been a ASE master tech. for 25 years. In the field for over 30. Bolting the legs was a little tricky with only one. Fitting the collars. Really like this hitch Operates very smoothly. Like that it has grease fittings

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. The hitch comes in three packages and each package was pretty beat up when it arrived but all the pieces were fine with no damage. Only one package had assembly instructions but all were available online and overall, it's pretty obvious. The only quality issue I encountered were the little plastic rivets that hold on the decorative pieces on were loose, and could not be tightened. Nothing a few spare stainless nut and bolts couldn't fix. Overall, I'm very happy with the hitch, very happy with the service from etrailer and would highly recommend both.

Since the website did not have a PDF file on how to assemble the hitch (I have had a couple and each on had a PDF file on the website on how to put it together) I jumped to the conclusion that it was shipped assembled. To my surprise it arrived in three (3) boxes and yep had to put it together. I haven't used it yet but it seems like a it will do the job. I would have given it 4.9 stars since I had to put it together but the review would only accept 5 so I gave it 5... :-)

- RP30921
by:

Only one I ever owned. Nothing to compare it to but works great....

- RP30921
by:

Would have rated this higher but assemby was not user friendly. First, when the two legs were powder coated the threaded holes should have been covered instead of being filled with the black finish. Secondly, you have to torque the bolts to 220 foot pounds. Difficult to say the least even if you have the proper tool. Other than that the unit is very high quality and should be good for years.

According to the 2017 Ford Towing Guide it looks like the max a 2017 Ford F-250 SRW 6.2L V8 can tow is 15,700 lbs and that's if you have a 4x2 with the 142" wheelbase, an 8' bed, and a 4.30 axle ratio. If you have the 3.73 axle ratio I wouldn't go over a trailer with a 12K GVWR, and for a 4.30 axle ratio that would range from 14.5K - 15.5K. For...

  • Does Reese Elite Rail kit for 2016 Chevy Silverado 3500 have Same Dimensions as OEM Rail Kit
The Elite fifth wheel rail kit part # RP30158-68 has very different puck dimensions than the factory rail kit your 2016 Chevy Silverado 3500 would have came with. The areas of your truck bed that are flat or designed for matching up to the pucks of the OEM rail kit will not match up. The # RP30158-68 will allow you to use a hitch like the Reese M5 part # RP30921 which is a very quiet and high quality hitch. To answer you question directly though the left to right dimension between...

  • Under Bed Mounted 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2011 F350
There are indeed under-bed 5th wheel hitch mounting options for your 2011 Ford F350 long bed. Reese offers a puck mount system that would use the # RP30126 puck mount that you've looked at. The pucks would accept the Reese M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch, part # RP30921. Another option from B & W would use their # BWGNRK1111-5W Turnover Ball Goosneck hitch as a mount for their # BWRVK3500-5W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch. The Companion is our most often recommended hitch because it's...

You can essentially use these with the Lippert Turning Point pin box but you need to lock out the pin box so it acts like a standard pin box. You won't be able to utilize the rotating turret since it will be attached to your Super Duty at one point (the gooseneck hitch ball). If you need to...

  • Can I Use Andersen Ultimate Hitch With My Reese Sidewinder
I do have an option for you but the Reese Sidewinder king pin like part # RP34FR is not compatible with the Andersen Ultimate Hitch like part # AM3200 because the Sidewinders are not compatible with adapters or hitches that only have one center point of attachment. The Sidewinder puts too much torque on adapters and requires a fixed hitch with 4 points of contact.
