Forged, Self-Latching Jaw

Self-Latching Jaw

The one-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel hitch provides absolute security with its wraparound design. Increased jaw-to-king-pin contact results in not only a stronger connection, but less noisy rattling and stiff chucking as well.

The jaw is also always ready to receive, so you don't need to use the handle to open it before backing up toward your trailer. As long as the bail pin is removed from the latching handle, the jaw will accept the king pin as it enters the hitch.

Finally, the jaw is self-latching, so it will automatically secure your trailer's king pin when it moves into the jaw.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Pivot Bushings

In addition to the tight jaw tolerance, a close connection between the head and the pivot bushings further reduces rattle and movement. And because the pivot bushings are independent from the head, they can be tightened to ensure a strong connection over time.

King Pin Indicator Prevents High Pinning

King Pin Indicator

This M5 hitch features a built-in king pin indicator to ensure proper hookup. This indicator is located on the back of the head along with a V-shaped notch that are both visible from the cab of your truck. The V-notch is lined up with the jaw at the front of the hitch, and can be used as a guiding point to line the king pin up with the jaw as you back up your truck. The jaw also has an internal plate that keeps the king pin from entering if it is too high to enter safely. As a result, the king pin indicator will only change from red to green if the king pin is fully engaged in the jaw.

Easy-to-Use Latching Handle

Lever and Hitch

This hitch's handle is designed for smooth motion and effortless operation. It requires only 2 fingers to use and won't bind up as you pull. In addition, the handle is long, so it's easy to access from outside of your truck bed. And the ergonomic grip makes it comfortable to hold and pull from different angles.

Installed in a 2018 GMC 3500 LB SRW Overall it was really easy to put together. Its light enough move in and out and very sturdy. I did not have a clearance issue with the Backflip cover regarding the stock handle. See pics. Just a heads up, I had an issue with the threading in the legs, etrailer was very understanding and sent me out replacements supper fast. I contacted Reese regarding paint guncked up in the threading and they were aware of the issue, they recommended running a wire brush or a tap to clean it out.

Comments
One year later. No issues. I get complemens about how easy the hitch is to use, the ability to slide stuff under it, and how much room I still have in the bed with the hitch in. Would buy again.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

I recently purchased a Reese M5 20K hitch for my new Silverado 3500HD, Crew Cab, 8’ bed. As usual, Etrailer pricing was very good and with free shipping to boot. The hitch arrived via UPS in just a few days after placing the order. Following the detailed instructions provided by Reese, the install into the factory “puck” system, was fairly straight forward. However, a word of caution concerning the install. There are 4 15/16” bolts that need to be torqued to 220-foot pounds and are somewhat difficult to get to. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a torque wrench that would accommodate the recommended foot pounds of torque. Also, you may have an issue if you need to place the hitch at its highest position. The release handle might protrude above the bed rails of your truck in this position. This will be a problem if you have a bed cover. Reese is/was well aware of this issue and sells an after-market handle that will correct this issue. Etrailer lists this handle on their Web page.

I have the Reese M5 for the Chevy towing package and it works great. No unnecessary movement hooks up easy and fit like a glove. The hitch is a bit more complicated to install than you make sound with getting the prescribed 220’ lbs of torque required but we got and it works great. And thanks to Molly E for getting our order straight and here when we needed it.

Love the hitch. Just as I ordered. It was the first new hitch in almost 20 years. I really like no rails in truck bed and the color- coded hitched indicator. Also, this hitch is much quieter than my last one. Thanks Etrailer.

Your company was great. Don't care for this hitch, although I have owned many hitches in 35 years of towing. Very finicky and some parts are flimsy. I will likely replace the hitch this year and will gladly order from you again

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

After a lot of research, I chose the Reese M5. The design is great. Assembly was a breeze, and it installs and removes very easily. The fitment with my 2019 Silverado puck system is perfect. I am much more comfortable with the single jaw hitch and with the M5's Easy Latching Handle, its a breeze to hitch and unhitch. etrailers price made it an even easier decision. Sometimes a lower price means a lower quality. Absolutely not the case here with etrailer. Couldn't be more happy with this purchase, Reese and etrailer

Comments
This is my first fifth wheel so it makes sense that it is my first 5th wheel hitch. Well, I couldnt be happier with the M5. It is very user friendly. The Red Green indicator gives me peace of mind when hitching up and knowing I am securely locked in. I am in the construction trades and need the full bed of my truck frequently. Removing the M5 is a breeze whenever I need to haul or transport something. I would buy again and definitely recommend the M5. 100 Satisfied. Thanks Reese and etrailer.

Great hitch! Went together as per the instructions, pulls our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel great. Love the positive "Green" when the pin is in place as well as the wrap around jaw, real selling points for me.

Love this hitch over the last year! Pulled our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel over 11,000 miles in the last year without any issues what so ever.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This would be a three but etrailer's customer service is excellent. Everyone I've dealt with has been exceptional. Reese needs to get their act together. Three month backorder (okay COVID-19 has everyone backed up). Finally get the order and the release handle grip is destroyed, just crumbled almost like it was cooked. I have to adjust the pucks, which is expected, but Reese installed the Carter pins, which are a [beast] to remove in order to adjust the puck, suggestion Reese just leave them out for the installer to install. The the final [blow] from Reese on top of their otherwise great paint job, the bolt holes for the assembly are filled with paint, Reese howabout running a thread chase through these threads so the installer doesn't risk cross threading the bolt, it's just the small things that would make an otherwise outstanding hitch better.

Comments
Thanks for your words. Customer Service will reach out to you about the broken handle.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This will be Part 1 of a 2 part review. Part 1 will cover unboxing, assembly and installation. So the hitch arrived yesterday. 3 undamaged boxes (Good). Unboxing and parts inventory revealed a cracked handle grip on the head. Contacted Etrailer CS... no parts available until 9/21. it must be a common problem with this hitch since the CS rep knew exactly what my problem was. This won't prevent use but it's a unnecessary headache. Now THE REAL FUN begins! Attempting to thread the 4 bolts that attach the legs to the center section. THREADS WERE POWDER COATED. Spent the rest of the afternoon gradually tightening and untightening the bolts to clear the threads of coating. tedious and unnecessary process tighten the bolt a little... back it out... blow out the debris... drop of oil and repeat. Eventually broke out my pneumatic impact wrench. Finally got the threads cleared. It weighs quite a bit and I highly recommend you have a friend. I was alone and ended up setting the center section on a pair of jack stands at the approximate desired height (BTW had to call Etrailer tech support to get the height adjusting starting and ending dimensions since the supplied directions only tell you that there is 4 inches of vertical adjustment not what they are and what hole matches what dimension. Etrailer was great throughout this ordeal), just to get the bolts started and snugged (not torqued yet). Speaking of torque... 220 ft/lbs YIKES!!! My wrench only goes up to 150. I took the hitch down to my local garage and a very kind mechanic torqued to the required 220 ft/lbs. Gave him a $20 for his trouble. Now to setting it in the OEM pucks and adjusting the tension on the leg locks. Unit ships with cotter pins installed in the castle nuts. THEY WERE JAMMED IN TIGHT AND ALREADY BENT AND WOULDN'T SIMPLY PULL OUT ONCE STRAIGHTENED. Had to cut them off with a dremel. Fortunately Reese supplies you with 4 new ones. So after 2 days the legs and the center section are assembled and installed according to the specs. Later on day 2... time to install the head. Apparently the hitch had a common problem with the "Ready to Tow" indicator falling off. There was a "field fix" kit included with the head. It consisted of a screw and washer... it was a real pain to install... since you need three hands to stabilize the part and drive the screw... seems they could have just done that in the manufacturing process. another unnecessary headache. Finally... after 2 full days it's all lubricated, assembled and installed in the truck. Next step is testing the hitching and unhitching process and its first trip, planning 700 mile trip at the end of August...That will be Part 2. Wish I could give it a higher rating on assembly, installation but it performs poorly in that aspect. My previous CURT 16k hitch went together in 30 min with no problems whatsoever. I put 3,000 miles on that Curt before I got a bigger and heavier rig, thus the upgrade to 20k. Hoping the hitching, towing and unhitching experience with this Reese allows me to upgrade my overall rating. Stay tuned.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Hitch assembly was fairly straightforward, took less than an hour. Did have to purchase a torque wrench since the one I had only went to 150 ft lbs. Figured I'd purchase it so I could keep it in the truck to make any adjustments, if required, and check that bolts remain torqued to xxx ft lbs over time. Had to make two small adjustments when I put it in the puck system, which was easy to do. The red/green indicator had popped out of the head unit. I figured out that it just needed to be popped back in to position. Haven't towed with it yet so I can't comment on that at this time. Hitch is beefy and I doubt will not be a problem handling our 5th wheel. So far I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

it went together well and connects way better than my old hitch nice and solid no chucking while traveling, the red / green indicator is a cheap piece of plastic that doesn't work on mine reads green all the time, unhooks easy from trailer

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The GOOD: Very solid hitch, well designed and easy in and out of truck bed. The BAD: plastic indicator is useless, pops out all the time, Engineering failure #1. If you have to hitch hard, it will knock it out of alignment and the handle will NOT latch or unlatch properly, needs heavier center pin in jaw. Keep lots of Grease on the talon and pin to help the latching action smooth. Good hitch just needs a little tweaking.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We are so very pleased with our 27K hitch! The order process was easy and delivery was very fast. We have used a Reese hitch for years now. We just upgraded our fifth wheel RV and it wieghs in at 16K our old hitch was an 18K hitch so we were within 2K of max weight. We felt that that was too close so we went big, it feels (pulls) better and I feel more safe knowing that we have plenty of hitch. Thank you for such great products. Jason and Patricia

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We have not been able to use the hitch yet but we are looking forward to it. The Reese M5 27k hitch came in just a couple of days after ordering it. Having read some other reviews we knew what tools we would need. FYI you need a 200 lb torque wrench. I guess it took us about an hour to get it put together and in our truck. It looks great!

This is still a great product after a year. We have not had one issue with the hitch. I recommend it highly!

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

It works very well. Easy in and out. Only issue is with my F-450 and the Grand Drdign 397, it is not tall enough for the pin box to clear the side rails of the bed when more than a 45 degree angle to the trailer. I wish it where two inches taller

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

220 LBS of torque not everyone has that size wrench available. Needed a tap to clean threads not easy to find and $40 bucks. Asked Reese has to disassemble center so the socket would sit straight on bolt head. Other than that a very nice hitch easy connect

Awsome purchase! It was easy enough to put together, hooks up very easily to a 37ft camper & small enough that it can stay in the truck at all times & fits under the bed cover. Would definitely recommend this product. The only issue we had was the blue handle cover was broken when we received but etrailer sent us a new one w/ no problem.

Review from a similar M5 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Solid hitch has done a great job towing our 20,000 lb toy hauler for a about a year and 6,000+ miles. It has a pretty wide tolerance for getting hitched, and is smooth as butter both when towing and hooking/unhooking. A few minor issues: the plastic handle cracked and fell apart after about 2 months, but it's not really necessary, it just looks nicer with it on. The red/green indicator thing always pops out of place and has to be reset - I don't even bother looking at it anymore, I just do a pull test every time I hook up. Also, the center / core section has a label on it that says 20k lbs, instead of 27k - I called Reese and they were very helpful in validating that it was just an incorrect label and was truly the correct 27k rated center box (they even had me measure the steel plate to make sure it was to spec).

  • Center Bolt Hole Line Purpose On The Reese M5 5th Wheel trailer Hitches
The bolt holes on the side of the head of the Reese M5 20k Hitch # RP30890 allow for you to increase or decrease the height of the head and the center line of bolt holes are used on the 27k hitches like the # RP30895 which require three bolts to secure the head to the legs.

  • Recommended Hitch For Use With Reese Revolution For 2017 Chevy 2500 With Prep Package
I recommend the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package - Single Jaw - 20,000 lbs # RP30890 to use with the Reese Revolution with the 2017 Chevy 2500 prep package. The Reese M5 will fit into the prep package and can handle up to 20,000 lbs of gross towing weight. The wraparound design of the jaw provides increased security compared to the other hitches with 2 piece jaws because it is a stronger connection with the king pin of the revolution. If you need a...

  • Can Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch be Taller Than Max Height Settings for 2019 Chevy Silverado
If you have the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30890 set to max height and you are still needing some extra clearance when backing into your driveway then you either need to adjust the height settings of your pin box, install a 5th wheel tailgate like part # VGM-14-4000 for your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500, raise the overall height of your trailer, or a combination of all 3 options. There is no way to make your M5 5th wheel hitch taller. I honestly like the louvered tailgate option...

  • Is Reese Elite RE25 Compatible with 2019 Chevy Silverado 3500 Factory Prep Package?
The Reese Elite Series Pre-Assembled 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30142 is only compatible with the Reese Elite Underbed Kit. Unfortunately there is not a compatible leg kit or adapter for your new truck OEM pucks and that hitch head. The compatible hitch for your truck is the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package # RP30890. This hitch is directly compatible with your factory pucks. You may want to consider upgrading to the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel...

  • Wedge for Reese M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch and Sidewinder in 2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD
I spoke with a representative of Reese who said that the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30890 does not have a custom wedge. The Sidewinder # RP61421 comes with a universal wedge, part # 201100 that you will use with your hitch. This is a great set up you have chosen for you 2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD; the Reese M5 hitch will fit directly into the puck system of your truck and has a unique jaw system called a "Talon" which is a single-piece jaw that will wrap fully around your Sidewinder's...

  • Can I Switch Legs On Reese Elite For Ford Puck System To Fit GM Factory Puck System
We do have hitches that fit the GM factory puck package but the replacement legs part # RP30889 is not compatible with the head of your Reese Elite Series hitch part # 58292. The Reese Elite hitch is designed with legs to fit the Ford prep package or the Reese Elite Underbed Rail installation kit, but you already have a puck system. I recommend getting a 5th Wheel Hitch designed to fit the GM factory puck package The Reese M5 part # RP30890. I recommend this 5th Wheel Hitch because...

  • What is Lowest Hitch Height for B&W Companion in 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 With Factory Prep Package
The 16-3/4 inch hitch height is the lowest the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3700 will go in your 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 with the factory prep package. The Companion is a great hitch but there are other high-quality fifth wheel options if you need one with a lower height setting; for that I strongly recommend the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30890 which has hitch height settings that are adjustable from between 14 inches and 20 inches. The M5 # RP30890 will also fit...

  • Are the Fifth Wheel Rail Kits for Chevy and GM Trucks Different Based on Bed Length
There are two reasons the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3700 only shows up for the 8 foot bed models of the 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with the factory rail kit. Biggest reason is because the rail kits between the short and long bed GM rail kits are different dimensions so the hitch won't physically fit. Also because for a short bed truck you'd want to use a slider hitch to have enough turning clearance like the # BWRVK3770 which does fit and would work well. If you have a...

  • Will Reese Elite 18K for Puck System Fit Puck System on 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali
We do have 5th wheel hitches that are compatible with the puck system on your 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali but unfortunately at this time Reese only has legs for the Reese Elite 18K # RP30142 that are compatible with Ford puck systems. To replace the Elite I recommend the Reese M5 # RP30890 that fits with the puck system on your GMC Sierra. I recommend this because is similar to the Elite (which you like using). It has a single jaw but it is rated for a high capacity 20K, has an indicator...

  • Reese Hitch for 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 Long Bed to Replace Elite Series
The Replacement Legs for Reese Elite Series # RP58543 are simply replacement legs, so they won't fit your 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 (the Elite Series is only a fit for the Ford puck system). You can add a very good Reese hitch that fit the puck system of your truck with the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package - 20,000 lbs # RP30890 or 27,000 lbs # RP30895. The M5 is an outstanding hitch because it has height settings that are adjustable from between 14 inches...
