Is this right For you? Product Expert Kathleen M says:

Yes, if you:

  • Are a full-time RVer with a fairly lightweight fifth wheel trailer
  • Tow with a truck that has a 5.5 ft bed - this hitch was designed just for smaller trucks
  • Have to make tight turns often and want to save yourself the hassle of getting out every time you need the hitch to slide

No, if you:

  • Plan on traveling on rough, uneven roads - the Autoslide's been known to bind in these conditions
  • Have an eye for details and would be bothered by chipped paint that could eventually lead to rust
  • Have a lifted truck and need a hitch that sits lower in the bed
Hitch slides automatically as you drive to give you 22-1/2" of additional clearance for tight turns. A wraparound jaw provides a smooth ride and a locking bar offers added security. Pivoting head allows easy hook up and helps to limit chucking. 1-833-496-1390 to order Demco fifth wheel hitch part number DM8550040 or order online at etrailer.com. Note: This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

A slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 22-1/2" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

The Autoslide has a built-in roller-and-guide assembly that allows for smooth, controlled, and automatic movement. As your truck turns, this assembly also turns. When the assembly turns, an arm in the base of the hitch moves down 1 of 2 tracks in the interior of the base. This action causes the head to be pushed down one of the exterior tracks in the base. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the roller-and guide assembly inside the Autoslide forces the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the roller-and-guide assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a 5th-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (22-1/2")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Hitch works great, my truck has a 5’7” box, I can back up turning 90 degrees if I need to. It’s very important that your pretty straight when you unhook or you can’t hookup. You have to be more accurate when hookup. The first few times it seemed like it was going to be a hassle, you just have to pay a little more attention. Hitch is worth it

Wow, where to begin. I can't imagine towing a 5th wheel trailer in a shorter bed truck without an autoslide setup. After the initial install I noted on the 2nd(?) trip a clunking noise during acceleration after a stop - a couple emails back and forth with Demco support, as well as a quick phone call, and it was all sorted out (user error) with no further issues - Thank you Demco!
I tow a short & light Jayco 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton shortbed and having the ability to drive, turn, and park the camper without having to get out of the truck to manually engage or disengage a slide on the hitch has made for much more relaxing weekends away. The Hijacker autoslide gives PLENTY of space between the camper and cab and I've never had to worry, but I did my homework and ran the numbers well before I purchased my hitch so I wasn't surprised.
I would say the only downside for me would be the weight and bulkiness of the hitch. Not having the means to easily remove and store it between trips, the hitch is forced to live in the bed of the truck right now, but I did know about the weight going into the purchase.
All in all, for the peace of mind the Demco autoslide gives me, I'd spend the money all over again.

Everyone that I spoke to on the phone were very helpful. I haven't hooked up my hitch yet but I like what I see so far.

Your team was very helpful getting me the hitch that I needed, and it arrived a little sooner than expected. In fact my truck is still in the repair shop for the damage caused by the other hitch, so I have not installed the new one as of yet.
Thanks for all your help.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Well built fifth wheel hitch. Haven't got a chance to tow our new Montana High Country 295RL. But I know a guy that has towed his fifth wheel with this same hitch. I'm sure this 18K hitch will be excellent! Or I wouldn't have bought it. I recommend e trailer for everything.

wow what a great hitch . Got the no drill bed rails and the bolted rite up to my B&W gooseneck hitch . Ashley E did a great job answering all my questions . Only took a few days to get here too. Took me about 2 hours to install everything and if you have a short bed truck this is the only way to go .

This was the best solution for my Dodge RAM 2500 towing my Alliance 340RL 38' 5th Wheel. My son helped me install the rails under the bed and now it is very easy to remove the hitch when I am not using it. It is very strong and I highly recommend this for anyone with a short bed truck.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Item works exactly as described. I have a shortbed (6.5') Ford F350. Probably towed our 5th wheeler 5000+ miles with no problem. Then last year it happened! We were making a sharp turn in an uneven lot and POW, the 5vr hit the rear window and it exploded. After that I became gun shy about turning with the 5vr attached so I started looking at sliding hitches. A slider that you had to get out and unlatch to make work, didn't make sense to me. At what point do you get out? So, an auto slider hitch was purchased. Now when I get to a certain degree turn the auto-slide hitch moves back in its carriage and then auto-slides to the normal location once straightened out. Not gun shy anymore.

Pro:
Well packaged
Well made
Easy install
It WORKS.

Cons:
Price
Very heavy
Some clunking after it straightens out from a turn

Comments
The hitch still works as described. Have not broken another rear window since installing it. I have learned that when unhooking from 5vr I have to take a pry bar to straighten out the hitch back to straight for rehooking. The only thing I do not like is the serious clunking that seems to occur when making some turns, then accelerating and the hitch straitening out. Thats the only real complaint I have. Since installation of the Demco I do not worry about making sharp turns!

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Best 5th wheel hitch ever for a RAM 3500 mega cab.
No issues with the RV coming close to the back of the cab or back glass.
I would recommend this hitch to anyone searching for a 5th wheel hitch for a Ram mega cab, I wish I knew about it when I first purchased my Ram mega cab, I learned the hard way, after busting out my back glass...and trying several hitches. This hitch is truly an autoslide. I have showed several short bed guys this hitch and told them the cost of the 5th wheel hitch is worth it.... It is top of the line. This will be the last 5th wheel hitch I will ever need to purchase.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have a 2017 Ford F-250 (Crew Cab, short box), and a 40’ 14,000lb 5th wheel. I’ve owned this Demco Autoslide for 1 year, and I absolutely love it. I purchased a 5th wheel for the maneuverability, but my expectations were blown away with this Autoslide. I also have the Extang Xceed hard tonneau cover, and when folded up (laying flat on the panel closest to the cab) I can maneuver however I want without removing the tonneau. If im going to make a really sharp turn on uneven ground I’ll stop and flip my tonneau all the way up, but very rarely do I have to do that. Also removal & install of this hitch is about as easy as removing & installing a 5th wheel hitch can possibly be. I use a rope, pulley, & my side by side. Highly recommend this Demco hitch.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We looked at several hitches and we decided on the Demco auto slider. The key was it’s an AUTO slider. I can say after a year I’m glad we bought one that is this tough as well. So many of the roads are under construction and this hitch is a beast. In my first couple of long-distance pulls, we ran into some very bad roads in need of repair, and even though we felt like we came out of our seats the hitch was steady and performed awesomely. That’s what you want!!!

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Still love this hitch.
Very heavy duty.
Extreme confidence in this unit. Hitching is a bit difficult sometimes but worth it. Need to be close to straight on and height is important. I'm confident that the jaws are locked and I'm confident that camper will not hit cab when turning. I can go 90 degrees without a worry. A couple of embarrassing moments a couple of times when hitching but I'll never see those people again. Compared to other hitches I've seen, this is one heavy duty [piece] and I'm glad I bought it.

Still love this hitch. Hitching is now seamless. Practice makes perfect.

Really like this hitch. Two things I don't like however, are 1) you need to backup almost perfectly the way you unhooked or it's a bear to hitch backup. 2) I don't like the bolts for the pinbox. Wish there was a quicker alternative. Hate getting a wrench out to tighten and losen.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Haven't used yet but appears well built. Purchased with bed rails and capture plates. Packaging from etrailer was on a pallet and none of the 4 boxes had a blemish. Wish other companies would have this attention to detail.

Comments
OK. Its been a year since I purchased my Demco sliding 5th wheel hitch. Theres good and bad. The good is that I dont have to worry about breaking out the rear window of my truck when making a tight turn. The hitch is designed well with this respect. I can even turn on my truck bed camera and watch it in motion, which is pretty cool. The bad is that it is a little hard to hitch up. Since this hitch has capture plates, which makes the head of the hitch spin with the trailer hitch so it knows to slide towards back of truck, you have to have a pretty straight lineup between truck and trailer. If it wasnt for all of the cameras I have on my truck Id probably be a little frustrated. But as is, I do like the hitch. Just make sure you align truck with trailer exactly when hitching AND unhitching.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Excellent choice for a short bed Super Duty . Have towed several thousand miles with no issues. This is a heavy hitch , but that is what you get with a heavy duty Demco hitch . Plenty of room between trailer and truck when doing tight turns.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This product is great for short-bed trucks since it takes the work of sliding the hitch back when backing or cutting a sharp corner. It is a bit clunky in its operation. When you pull forward straight there is no issue, but if you are at a corner and begin to pull with the truck at an angle, there is a resounding clunk as the hitch takes hold. I tried adjusting the forward stop and the capture bars and nothing helps. In order to avoid this clunk, like something lose in the hitch, I pull straight then begin my turn and there isn't the resounding clunk. I am using the Demco capture bars DM6171

Comments
After almost two-year of use, Im glad that I chose the Demco Auto Slider. The clunk is still there and I just got used to driving with the clunk and jerk, but its still better than having to get out of the truck to unlock the slider when backing or making severe turns. This is a set-it and forget-it operation. As it turns out, my trailer is designed with a forward setting king pin, so I probably didnt need a Demco, but thats not how all trailers are designed.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The hitch works great but it added a lot of weight to my truck. I only used it once and weighed everything on CAT scales and found that with only 2 people in the truck and with full fuel including my auxiliary tank and the pin weight of my 5th wheel I was over the gross vehicle weight by 100 lbs so I have opted for a lighter hitch. I gave it 5 stars because it works and performs exactly as advertised,

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The Autoslide installation was easy (with help of another person). It was heavier than I expected, but manageable for two people. The included instructions were "spot on" and made the install easy for me. It also helped to look at the videos posted on their web site.
Once we installed the Autoslide in my 2021 RAM 2500 truck, the trip home with our new 5th wheel Toy Hauler went without any problems. I would recommend this Autoslide in ANY Short bed truck pulling a 5th wheel camper. After researching other available 5th Wheel hitches, I think this one is best to use. Easy to install, competitive price, and a good quality product.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This hitch is VERY HEAVY. I had to essentially rig a crane in my driveway to lift it into the bed of my truck. My wife and I are in our 60's and no longer have any young/strong backs living in the house to help us out. Other than that we are very pleased with the hitch for towing. It has saved the cab of my short be F350 at least twice while backing and not paying enough attention to the front of the fifth wheel as it approached the cab. Have had no trouble getting aligned and hooked up.

by:

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The hitch works well during normal use but has two areas that needs improved. The guides that maintain the 5th wheel in the hitch need to be taller. Also the hitch does not rotate back to the center position if it is disconnected at an angle.

Comments
Rehitching at an angle is an issue with Demco. The reason the hitch head does not rotate back to the center position is so you can connect at the same angle you disconnected from. If that head was loose it would be more difficult to align your trailer. That being said, it is not recommended to either couple or uncouple at an angle with this hitch due to the autoslide feature. It is best to be at no more than a 15 degree angle.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Very happy with my Demco Autoslide hitch after one year. We pull a Montana 3120 35 ft 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F-350 short bed. Took a month long 6,000 mile trip from Colorado to New England/Canada this Summer. Lots of hilly/curvy roads and some remote campgrounds with tight corners and some near 80 degree back ins. Never came close to trailer contacting the truck. I’ve had no jerking or other issues when turning or stoping/starting. Works great. The only drawback is there isn’t much room for error when you back up to hook up the trailer, so it takes a little practice to get used to correctly lining up your Demco Hitch to the trailer. The first couple of trips, it took me 3 or 4 attempts to properly line it up. No longer an issue for me after a few trips and you get used to the angles. It weighs about 300 pounds. I got a small chain hoist which I installed in my garage rafters and easily lift the hitch in and out of my truck and just let it hang front he rafters until I need to use it.

Comments
One thing to consider - there are a lot of small springs and levers working inside the hitch head to work the king pin jaws. While this 5th wheel hitch is certainly robust and designed to take a beating from your 5th wheel when towing, it wasnt designed to support its own weight for extended periods of time.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Needing 15 inches of Turning Clearance
Since the RBW 7027 is a tube style pin box there isn't a Sidewinder pin box that will give you the turning clearance you'd need, but we do have one fifth wheel hitch that will slide more than 15 inches like you'd need. The Demco Hijacker 13k part # DM8550040 might be ideal for you. As you make tight turns it automatically slides back 22-1/2 inches to give you the clearance you need for sharp turns. This way you don't have to remember to activate the slider as you enter and leave parking lots.

  • Demco 13K HiJacker is Not Sliding Back All the Way
There are a couple of things to check. First make sure the head of the Demco HiJacker # DM8550040 is straight and the trailer is not coupled. Measure the width of the pin box on the trailer. Adjust the capture plates on the hitch head to be 1/8 of an inch wider than the pin box width. Couple up to the trailer push the capture plates against the pin box and finger tighten the two 1/2 inch bolts against the capture plate. Lock the bolts into place by tightening the nuts against the thick...

  • Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Truck with 5-1/2 Foot Bed Length
There's only one slider hitch that can work in a bed length shorter than 6 feet and still provide enough turning clearance and it's not one made by Reese. Instead you'd want the Demco Hijacker Autoslide hitch part # DM8550040 which will automatically slide back and give you 22-1/2 inches of clearance. This would basically be the only sliding hitch that's going to work for your application.

  • Does Truck and 5th Wheel Trailer Need to Be Straight to Connect to Demco Hijacker Autoslide
Yes, when you go to hook or unhook from a fifth wheel trailer using the Demco Hijacker Autoslide hitch like the part # DM8550040 you have to be almost perfeclty straight otherwise it won't work. This is because the auto slide mechanism activates when the head is turned.

I've attached a photo to assist and have also attached the installation details which state to measure your pin box width...

  • Do You Need A Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch And A Rotating Pin Box For Short Bed Trucks
Since you have a 5.5 foot bed you will either need a rotating pin box or a Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 13,000 lbs # DM8550040 The Demco is going to be your only option for a hitch unless you get a rotating pin box. It is NOT recommended to use a sliding hitch and a rotating pin-box, you only need one not both. It is unsafe and dangerous.

  • Is There Version of Demco Hijacker Autoslide 13k That Fits Ford OEM Rail Kits
There isn't a version of the 13k Demco Hijacker Autoslide part # DM8550040 that fits the Ford puck system since it is a hitch designed for 5-1/2 beds and there isn't a version of a Ford truck that would have that bed length and the puck system. The F-150 does not have the option for the pucks. This hitch also cannot be used with a Sidewinder since the Sidewinders pivot on a locked hitch head and the heads of the Demco Hijacker Autoslides pivot as well.

  • Fitment of Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider To Turning Point Pin Box
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider, # DM8550040 is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails such as what your current Reese hitch is mounted to in the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. To use this hitch, you will need to lockout your Turning Point pin box allowing rotation only at the hitch to king pin connection point. This is done by installing two 5/8" - 11 x 2" in the lockout holes in the back of the pin box. Please review your owners manual for...

This head assembly will slide 22-1/2 inches which will give you the needed clearance to make tight turns. • Fifth Wheel Hitch Solution for Truck with Short Bed
Since you said you have a short bed that means you need a slider hitch. My favorite slider hitch is the automatic sliding hitch by Demco part # DM8550034. Unlike most sliding hitches that require you to get out and activate the slider mechanism every time you need to make a sharp turn this one slides automatically as you make the turn. This will work great on truck beds that are larger than 6 feet. This hitch has an 18k capacity. If you have a bed length that is shorter than 6 feet you...
