Note: This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

A slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 22-1/2" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

The Autoslide has a built-in roller-and-guide assembly that allows for smooth, controlled, and automatic movement. As your truck turns, this assembly also turns. When the assembly turns, an arm in the base of the hitch moves down 1 of 2 tracks in the interior of the base. This action causes the head to be pushed down one of the exterior tracks in the base. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the roller-and guide assembly inside the Autoslide forces the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the roller-and-guide assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a 5th-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (22-1/2")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Your team was very helpful getting me the hitch that I needed, and it arrived a little sooner than expected. In fact my truck is still in the repair shop for the damage caused by the other hitch, so I have not installed the new one as of yet. Thanks for all your help.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Item works exactly as described. I have a shortbed (6.5') Ford F350. Probably towed our 5th wheeler 5000+ miles with no problem. Then last year it happened! We were making a sharp turn in an uneven lot and POW, the 5vr hit the rear window and it exploded. After that I became gun shy about turning with the 5vr attached so I started looking at sliding hitches. A slider that you had to get out and unlatch to make work, didn't make sense to me. At what point do you get out? So, an auto slider hitch was purchased. Now when I get to a certain degree turn the auto-slide hitch moves back in its carriage and then auto-slides to the normal location once straightened out. Not gun shy anymore. Pro: Well packaged Well made Easy install It WORKS. Cons: Price Very heavy Some clunking after it straightens out from a turn

Comments
The hitch still works as described. Have not broken another rear window since installing it. I have learned that when unhooking from 5vr I have to take a pry bar to straighten out the hitch back to straight for rehooking. The only thing I do not like is the serious clunking that seems to occur when making some turns, then accelerating and the hitch straitening out. Thats the only real complaint I have. Since installation of the Demco I do not worry about making sharp turns!

Excellent choice for a short bed Super Duty . Have towed several thousand miles with no issues. This is a heavy hitch , but that is what you get with a heavy duty Demco hitch . Plenty of room between trailer and truck when doing tight turns.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have a 2017 Ford F-250 (Crew Cab, short box), and a 40’ 14,000lb 5th wheel. I’ve owned this Demco Autoslide for 1 year, and I absolutely love it. I purchased a 5th wheel for the maneuverability, but my expectations were blown away with this Autoslide. I also have the Extang Xceed hard tonneau cover, and when folded up (laying flat on the panel closest to the cab) I can maneuver however I want without removing the tonneau. If im going to make a really sharp turn on uneven ground I’ll stop and flip my tonneau all the way up, but very rarely do I have to do that. Also removal & install of this hitch is about as easy as removing & installing a 5th wheel hitch can possibly be. I use a rope, pulley, & my side by side. Highly recommend this Demco hitch.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Very happy with my Demco Autoslide hitch after one year. We pull a Montana 3120 35 ft 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F-350 short bed. Took a month long 6,000 mile trip from Colorado to New England/Canada this Summer. Lots of hilly/curvy roads and some remote campgrounds with tight corners and some near 80 degree back ins. Never came close to trailer contacting the truck. I’ve had no jerking or other issues when turning or stoping/starting. Works great. The only drawback is there isn’t much room for error when you back up to hook up the trailer, so it takes a little practice to get used to correctly lining up your Demco Hitch to the trailer. The first couple of trips, it took me 3 or 4 attempts to properly line it up. No longer an issue for me after a few trips and you get used to the angles. It weighs about 300 pounds. I got a small chain hoist which I installed in my garage rafters and easily lift the hitch in and out of my truck and just let it hang front he rafters until I need to use it.

Comments
One thing to consider - there are a lot of small springs and levers working inside the hitch head to work the king pin jaws. While this 5th wheel hitch is certainly robust and designed to take a beating from your 5th wheel when towing, it wasnt designed to support its own weight for extended periods of time.

Now been two years and have about 15,000 miles on my Demco Autoslide Hitch. Still works terrific with my 35 ft Montana on the F350 truck. Never a problem traveling or hitching up.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Quality is good. Installation was tricky without a lift. Some of the bed rail bolt holes (passenger side rear rail) where nearly impossible for a large hand to fit the nut on the bolt. Actually had to have my wife crawl under the truck and slide her hand in the brace to install the nut. Getting a decent size torque wrench into the space was also imposible. The front drivers side rail bracket required removing several vehicle lines and wires which was easy however the bracket covered the holes where the wires attached to the frame, so now they are hanging zip tied together. Hitch/ fifth wheel looks good quality but very heavy. Installed a 400 .lb capacity electric winch from harbor freight to lift the hitch. Firestone airbag helper springs was easy install but getting the exact straight cut on the hose end that hooks to the fill port was challenging to keep it from leaking Videos were very helpful

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This review is for the Demco Autoslide 21k and accompanying OEM rail adaptor I purchased for a 2020 Ram 3500 Megacab DRW. I've owned it one year. Overall, the hitch performs as I expected. It is high quality, very sturdy and seems like it will last for a long time. I had it installed at the dealer when I purchased the truck. It automatically slides to protect the cab in my 6'4" bed without any incidents. I tow a standard fifth wheel RV. There are a few negatives, which are not necessarily shortcoming of the product but, instead, necessary evils to allow me to have a short bed. First, it is BIG and BULKY. I believe this is just a function of the mechanism required to allow the autosliding feature and I am not really sure there are any other lighter alternatives with this feature. The fact it requires two parts (OEM Puck Rail and hitch), make it even more bulky. It takes up almost the entire bed and prevents most auxillary tank / tool box combos from fitting. Even standard size storage bins will not fit in my bed. I would prefer if they had a custom OEM all-in-one hitch for my truck like they do for the Ford. It adds significant weight, which decreases carrying capacity, which can be at a premium in hauling a heavy fifth wheel. I've never even tried to take it out of the bed due to the weight and difficulty. I also am not very happy with the adjustable catch plate design. It requires significant manipulation loosening and tightening 8 nuts when hitching and unhitching. This requires a step ladder to reach the nuts. I also found out after the fact that it does not come with the right size catch plate attachments for my hitch and I had to purchase a separate part, which added unexpected expense and delayed my taking the RV on its first trip. Overall, I am satisfied with the hitch.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The Demco Auto slide takes the worry out of towing my fifth wheel trailer with a short bed F-350. I have had no problems with backing into tight camping spots. And since everything is automatic I have one less thing to worry about while traveling with a fifth wheel. The only problem is that it is a little on the heavy side, so I just leave it in the truck when not towing. Problem solved. I am extremely happy with the product.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Ok... The darn thing weighs a ton! but that was outlined in their info... Just want to make that known. It took three of us to put in the base minus the "head". That was work !! As for the unit, it does as advertised. It swivels when turning and moves aft providing plenty of cab clearance. Don't expect to do a 90 degree turn however, but for normal situations it works fine. One thing I'd love to see is an "adjustment" to move (slide) the "head" a little more rearward when connecting. I only have about 6" of clearance with the gate down so I have to be nearly perfectly aligned to make the hookup. Speaking of which, hooking up can be a challenge. The clamps must have some "slack" and not be too tight against the pin box or alignment becomes a real issue. Also, if you aren't aligned with the trailer when disconnecting you'll need to have that same "off alignment" position when reconnecting as the "head" cannot be moved at all by hand. This can make for having to loosen the clamps, make the hook up, straighten the truck with the trailer and then have to re tighten the clamps. All in all, the unit is as expected and does provide movement aft and forward as you turn. Makes parking in that tight spot a bit less nerve racking... As for Customer Support Demco is spot on!! I had a couple of set up issues. One call cleared the misunderstanding on my end and the install went fine after that. On a second call, they also explained how to set up the clamps to better help with the above mentioned issues. But the nature of the design does not allow much leeway. Enjoy!!!

Comments
The overall rating Id give is 4.5 stars!! The issues Im having have been noted in many other reviews. Its Heavy !! Noted.. Its hard to align especially if you had to be off center when you parked. Now, as noted, you must be off-center to connect or loosen the clamps, connect, re-align truck to trailer and retighten the clamps. Gets to be a pain, but necessary if your way off center. Also, it does bang a lot when moving out from a stop which tends to be a bit startling if your not ready. As for the swiveling function, its perfect!! You can really maneuver the trailer basically as needed to get into those tight spots. Just be sure to watch out for anything really close to a 90 degree turn. That it wont do, but you shouldnt be doing that anyway!! Over all, as advertised it does the job! Also, hats off to Demco Cust Service. They ae there when you need them !! And a Big Thanks to etrailer always a great place to shop and they also provide top-notch after purchase support.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have a 2016 F250 short bed and this is perfect. I installed the puck system under the bed(etrailer) using the dimples from the factory as guides. The 5th wheel assembly was easy to follow if you don’t get into a hurry(like me) Three height settings. Mine is set low because of the 4 wheel drive. The four pins at the corner fit into the puck system like it was made for it.(etrailer) Everything came together well and I can make a tight 90 degree turn without having to worry about damaging my stuff. That would be bad! Just 4 cotter pins, a quarter turn of the locking levers, and with help, lift the 5th wheel out of the bed for a flat floor in your bed again. Easy Peasy.

Comments
Demco auto slide 18k is a heavy fifth wheel plate considering all the mechanics involved. About 300lbs plus the capture plate because of MorRyde system. But I really like the ride MorRyde gives me so that’s the trade off. The Demco auto slide worked without issues as did the puck system I installed. All came from etrailer and I am happy with them completely.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I recently purchased the Demco autoslide 5th wheel hitch with the 21K rail adaptor wih tow prep package. I installed everything in less than two hours, I found it to be pretty simple to put together. The puck system fits like a glove to my truck. I planned on keeping the two parts together all the time, but it is a little difficult to unlock the puck system with the hitch still attached. My hitch width covers the safty pins that lock into my puck system. Not a big deal, I may find it's easier to take the hitch off then the adaptor. My wife and I don't have a trailer yet, but when she finds the one she wants we will be ready for the road!

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

It works really well. It is really nice not to worry about the 5th wheel trailer clearance when making tight turns. We pulled the rig several hundred miles last summer and at least 3000 more since January with no issues. Also I used the height adjustment feature when setting up my trailer. When I received the shipment I was impressed by how well it was packed. It would have been nice to had had help, but I was able to assemble and mount it myself. The instructions were good, and as I said, we have had no issues during our first snowbird season.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Great hitch fits 2019 Ford 250 puck system well. I did make a mistake when I put it in though. The previous truck had a different, though similar hitch. I had to tap the handles quite hard to get when fitting it into the truck. I did this with the Demco and one of the tabs on the swivel handles got stuck. I could not remove it but, getting under the truck and using a small spanner with someone turning the handle in the bed I was able to get the nut to come off the spindle and remove the hitch. Hopefully nobody else will have this problem, it was my fault and not Demco's.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Tows great. I’m a first time fifth wheel owner. This made it easy. Be careful because this hitch is capable of angle that your trailer axles aren’t especially on a hard surface like asphalt or concrete. Over all very pleased. Be prepared to hoist this hitch in and out of your truck if you plan on removing it often. Probably weights closed to 400-500 lbs.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This product is great for short-bed trucks since it takes the work of sliding the hitch back when backing or cutting a sharp corner. It is a bit clunky in its operation. When you pull forward straight there is no issue, but if you are at a corner and begin to pull with the truck at an angle, there is a resounding clunk as the hitch takes hold. I tried adjusting the forward stop and the capture bars and nothing helps. In order to avoid this clunk, like something lose in the hitch, I pull straight then begin my turn and there isn't the resounding clunk. I am using the Demco capture bars DM6171

Arrived on time and worked exactly as described. Very heavy duty hitch. Installs and removes easily as long as you have a mechanical way to pick it up,. To heavy for one person to lift but i feel confident when pulling my camper down the road. No issues at all with the hitch. Stacey A. was very helpful through the ordering process. I would buy it again if needed.

I INSTALLED THE DEMCO HIJACKER AUTOSLIDE FITH WHEEL HITCH IN MY 17 F250 WITH THE FACTORY PREP PACKAGE. THE HITCH FIT PERFECTLY INTO THE FACTORY PUCK SYSTEM. DID NEED A FRIENDS HELP DO TO THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE OPERTION OF THE AUTOSLIDE AND THE FACT THAT I DON'T REALLY HAVE TO WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT THE TRAILER CONTACTING THE CAB OF TRUCK SINCE I HAVE A 6 FOOT BED. THIS IS THE FIRST FIFTH WHEEL HITCH I HAVE EVER USED BUT WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT HAS A TRUCK WITH A SHORT BED. ONLY 4 STARS BECAUSE OF THE LEARNING CURVE OF HITCHING UP AND THE THING IS PRETTY HEAVY. ONCE I LEARNED THAT THE HITCH AND THE TRUCK HAVE TO BE PRETTY STRAIGHT IN LINE DUE TO THE CAPTURE PLATES HITCHING UP HAS BECOME A NONE ISSUE. I DID PURCHASE AN ENGINE HOIST SO THAT I CAN REMOVE THE HITCH FROM THE BED OF MY TRUCK BY MYSELF IF I NEED TO, BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT JUST STAYS MOUNTED. I ALSO LOVE THE FACT THAT IT HAS A HIGHT ADJUSTMENT WHICH ALLOWED IT TO STILL FIT UNDER MY BEDS TONNEAU. OVERALL VERY SATISFIELD WITH PURCHASE

If you do not want to use a rotating pin box like the Reese Sidewinder on your 2019 Ram 1500 with the 5-1/2' bed then I do have one option, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer part # DM8550040 paired with the Demco Hijacker Premier Series Above-Bed Base Rails and Custom Installation Kit part # DM8552032-71. The Demco Hijacker is an auto-sliding 5th wheel hitch which means it will move the connection point back away from the cab while making a sharp turn. This will eliminate...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2020 GMC Sierra 5 3/4 Bed
If the plan is to tow a fifth wheel trailer with your 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 you'll need to go with a slider as there isn't a fifth wheel to gooseneck solution that would give you the needed turning clearance since your bed is so short. So what you'd need is a rail kit like the part # RP56015-53 and the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550040 which is only slider hitch that will have enough clearance for your bed length. This actually slides automatically as you make tight turns too which allows...

  • Solution for Towing Both Gooseneck and 5th Wheel Trailers Using Hitch With Under Bed Mounting Rails
In order to easily tow both 5th wheel and gooseneck trailers and to leave the bed free when the hitches are removed, you'll want to use a Demco Hijacker Autoslide that uses their UMS under bed rails. For a 21K capacity Hijacker Autoslide hitch, you'll want so use part # DM8550037 with the # DM8551000 rail kit. Once the 5th wheel hitch is removed, you would use the # DM5988 gooseneck hitch which is compatible with the UMS rails. This option provides a lot of convenience, as the hitch...

  • Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2019 Ford F-150 5-1/2 ft Bed
Yes, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide hitch # DM8550040 that you referenced is the correct hitch you'd need for your 2019 Ford F-150 5-1/2 foot bed as it's only sliding hitch that slides back as far as you'd need. If a truck's bed length is shorter than 6 feet like yours you need the 22 inches of clearance this provides whereas other sliders only give you about half of this. This hitch fits standard above bed fifth wheel rails so we have a few options but the best is the custom fit Reese...

  • Comparing Sliding Hitch and Sidewinder for 5th Wheel Towing With a 2020 Ram 1500 5.5 Bed
The best option I have for a 2020 Ram 1500 with 5-1/2' bed would be to use the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # DM8550040 which would require the Demco Hijacker Premier Series Above-Bed Base Rails and Custom Installation Kit part # DM8552032-71. The reason this is the best option is because it allows you to make full 90 degree turns without having to change out the pin box on the trailer. It is actually the only sliding fifth wheel hitch with enough travel to do this...

The auto-slider hitch with the most travel is the Demco HiJacker 13K # DM8550040 for above the bed rails. It has an astonishing 22-1/2 inches of travel. For an installation kit you will need # RP30035-31. It looks like the trailer you want to tow is under the 13K capacity of this hitch so no worries there....
