Note: This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit a Demco UMS custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately). The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into the receivers in your truck bed, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 UMS receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the receivers and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

This hitch has been used daily since i purchased it. I deliver fifth wheel travel trailers all over the country. This hitch has worked flawlessly from day one. This hitch is one of the only products that I've ever bought that is exactly what it was described to be. Im not one to do reviews, so the fact that im doing this one , in itself, says a lot about the quality of your product. The design and looks are much better than any other hitch ive seen. It just looks better in the truck bed than others do.

Instructions left alittle to interpretation when it came to hitch height in the bed of the truck. For a f350 super duty it is the medium set up. Save you some time and effort. Other then that it looks great and will be testing it out this weekend.

Hitch looks great and functions great as well. Installation could’ve been smoother due to the installation instruction measurements being slightly off. Look at finding hole caps that are 3” instead of two and drilling the larger hole.

Hitch works great. Had some issues using it when I first got it with putting the pin to lock down the handle but its worked much better lately. The hitch is heavy so I leave it in the back of the truck. Wish I could remove it so it doesn't get weathered.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Item works exactly as described. I have a shortbed (6.5') Ford F350. Probably towed our 5th wheeler 5000+ miles with no problem. Then last year it happened! We were making a sharp turn in an uneven lot and POW, the 5vr hit the rear window and it exploded. After that I became gun shy about turning with the 5vr attached so I started looking at sliding hitches. A slider that you had to get out and unlatch to make work, didn't make sense to me. At what point do you get out? So, an auto slider hitch was purchased. Now when I get to a certain degree turn the auto-slide hitch moves back in its carriage and then auto-slides to the normal location once straightened out. Not gun shy anymore. Pro: Well packaged Well made Easy install It WORKS. Cons: Price Very heavy Some clunking after it straightens out from a turn

Comments
The hitch still works as described. Have not broken another rear window since installing it. I have learned that when unhooking from 5vr I have to take a pry bar to straighten out the hitch back to straight for rehooking. The only thing I do not like is the serious clunking that seems to occur when making some turns, then accelerating and the hitch straitening out. Thats the only real complaint I have. Since installation of the Demco I do not worry about making sharp turns!

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I have a 2017 Ford F-250 (Crew Cab, short box), and a 40’ 14,000lb 5th wheel. I’ve owned this Demco Autoslide for 1 year, and I absolutely love it. I purchased a 5th wheel for the maneuverability, but my expectations were blown away with this Autoslide. I also have the Extang Xceed hard tonneau cover, and when folded up (laying flat on the panel closest to the cab) I can maneuver however I want without removing the tonneau. If im going to make a really sharp turn on uneven ground I’ll stop and flip my tonneau all the way up, but very rarely do I have to do that. Also removal & install of this hitch is about as easy as removing & installing a 5th wheel hitch can possibly be. I use a rope, pulley, & my side by side. Highly recommend this Demco hitch.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Excellent choice for a short bed Super Duty . Have towed several thousand miles with no issues. This is a heavy hitch , but that is what you get with a heavy duty Demco hitch . Plenty of room between trailer and truck when doing tight turns.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Very happy with my Demco Autoslide hitch after one year. We pull a Montana 3120 35 ft 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F-350 short bed. Took a month long 6,000 mile trip from Colorado to New England/Canada this Summer. Lots of hilly/curvy roads and some remote campgrounds with tight corners and some near 80 degree back ins. Never came close to trailer contacting the truck. I’ve had no jerking or other issues when turning or stoping/starting. Works great. The only drawback is there isn’t much room for error when you back up to hook up the trailer, so it takes a little practice to get used to correctly lining up your Demco Hitch to the trailer. The first couple of trips, it took me 3 or 4 attempts to properly line it up. No longer an issue for me after a few trips and you get used to the angles. It weighs about 300 pounds. I got a small chain hoist which I installed in my garage rafters and easily lift the hitch in and out of my truck and just let it hang front he rafters until I need to use it.

Comments
One thing to consider - there are a lot of small springs and levers working inside the hitch head to work the king pin jaws. While this 5th wheel hitch is certainly robust and designed to take a beating from your 5th wheel when towing, it wasnt designed to support its own weight for extended periods of time.

Now been two years and have about 15,000 miles on my Demco Autoslide Hitch. Still works terrific with my 35 ft Montana on the F350 truck. Never a problem traveling or hitching up.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

The Demco Auto slide takes the worry out of towing my fifth wheel trailer with a short bed F-350. I have had no problems with backing into tight camping spots. And since everything is automatic I have one less thing to worry about while traveling with a fifth wheel. The only problem is that it is a little on the heavy side, so I just leave it in the truck when not towing. Problem solved. I am extremely happy with the product.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This review is for the Demco Autoslide 21k and accompanying OEM rail adaptor I purchased for a 2020 Ram 3500 Megacab DRW. I've owned it one year. Overall, the hitch performs as I expected. It is high quality, very sturdy and seems like it will last for a long time. I had it installed at the dealer when I purchased the truck. It automatically slides to protect the cab in my 6'4" bed without any incidents. I tow a standard fifth wheel RV. There are a few negatives, which are not necessarily shortcoming of the product but, instead, necessary evils to allow me to have a short bed. First, it is BIG and BULKY. I believe this is just a function of the mechanism required to allow the autosliding feature and I am not really sure there are any other lighter alternatives with this feature. The fact it requires two parts (OEM Puck Rail and hitch), make it even more bulky. It takes up almost the entire bed and prevents most auxillary tank / tool box combos from fitting. Even standard size storage bins will not fit in my bed. I would prefer if they had a custom OEM all-in-one hitch for my truck like they do for the Ford. It adds significant weight, which decreases carrying capacity, which can be at a premium in hauling a heavy fifth wheel. I've never even tried to take it out of the bed due to the weight and difficulty. I also am not very happy with the adjustable catch plate design. It requires significant manipulation loosening and tightening 8 nuts when hitching and unhitching. This requires a step ladder to reach the nuts. I also found out after the fact that it does not come with the right size catch plate attachments for my hitch and I had to purchase a separate part, which added unexpected expense and delayed my taking the RV on its first trip. Overall, I am satisfied with the hitch.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Quality is good. Installation was tricky without a lift. Some of the bed rail bolt holes (passenger side rear rail) where nearly impossible for a large hand to fit the nut on the bolt. Actually had to have my wife crawl under the truck and slide her hand in the brace to install the nut. Getting a decent size torque wrench into the space was also imposible. The front drivers side rail bracket required removing several vehicle lines and wires which was easy however the bracket covered the holes where the wires attached to the frame, so now they are hanging zip tied together. Hitch/ fifth wheel looks good quality but very heavy. Installed a 400 .lb capacity electric winch from harbor freight to lift the hitch. Firestone airbag helper springs was easy install but getting the exact straight cut on the hose end that hooks to the fill port was challenging to keep it from leaking Videos were very helpful

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

We have had it for one season now. I am very happy with it. I have it in a 2020 F350 crew cab short box. Our new Grand Design 311BH has a cap that's "short bed friendly". But I still didn't want to chance it. In our driveway I have to make a jack knife turn with the trailer going down a slight decline. With out the Hijacker, I would have blown out my back window for sure. It still comes very close to my bed side, but that's all because of my situation. In normal driving conditions and fairly flat RV parks this thing shines! I Did have to modify my Peragon bed cover rails for getting it in my driveway. But it was worth it. I am new to 5th wheels but towing. And this hitch takes a lot of stress out of backing up and turning tight corners. I did lower the rear of my truck about 1 1/2" and lowered the pin box a little over an inch as well. This gave me more room between the bed and 5th wheel. As well as keeping the rig level going down the road. I have the hijacker in the middle height adjustment and my cover slides right over the top of it with a little room to spare. I also run airbags to keep everything level. I heard about troubles backing into the hitch when the side bars are set. I have not had any troubles lining up to back in. The head does move a little so you don't need to be perfect. I originally planned on loosening the side bars up and tightening them every time. But I forgot once pulling out of the driveway and the pin box hopped the side bars. Scared the crap out of me. After that I never loosen them up. I leave it set snug to the pin box. Since then it's been smooth sailing. Another thing to mention is, this hitch is heavy. It is a 2 person job or with some mechanical assistance. I did get it in the truck and out a couple times by myself (5'9" 150lb), but I opted for my tractor with fork extensions. This worked, but is hard to line up the pucks. So I put a hoist on a trolley in my garage. This is great for lining it up. I marked my floor for my back tire then the trolley lets you drop it right where it needs to go. I also saved the pallet the hitch came on, and added casters. Now when I hoist it out of the truck, I drop it on the pallet and wheel it to it's spot. I hope this helps anyone looking at it. If you are going back and forth between manual slide and an auto slide. Think of when you will need it. When your turning off a busy road in a tight fuel station or similar situation. You don't want to get out and screw around with your manual slider. OR if you forget your slider and blow out your back window. Not only is your trip ruined, but now it's a deductible on your insurance to have it fixed ( if it hits the cab not just the window). I looked at both styles and the extra money up front was worth not ruining my truck. And not finding myself in a stressful situation. I would but this hitch over and over again. It's built like heavy duty farm equipment. You will not be disappointed!

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Wow, where to begin. I can't imagine towing a 5th wheel trailer in a shorter bed truck without an autoslide setup. After the initial install I noted on the 2nd(?) trip a clunking noise during acceleration after a stop - a couple emails back and forth with Demco support, as well as a quick phone call, and it was all sorted out (user error) with no further issues - Thank you Demco! I tow a short & light Jayco 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton shortbed and having the ability to drive, turn, and park the camper without having to get out of the truck to manually engage or disengage a slide on the hitch has made for much more relaxing weekends away. The Hijacker autoslide gives PLENTY of space between the camper and cab and I've never had to worry, but I did my homework and ran the numbers well before I purchased my hitch so I wasn't surprised. I would say the only downside for me would be the weight and bulkiness of the hitch. Not having the means to easily remove and store it between trips, the hitch is forced to live in the bed of the truck right now, but I did know about the weight going into the purchase. All in all, for the peace of mind the Demco autoslide gives me, I'd spend the money all over again.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I am currently about to install this 5th wheel hitch. I chose this one because B&W doesn't make an auto slider, Pullrite has to have a capture plate on the trailer (which limits other trailers you can tow), so that Is how I decided on Demco. Since this is a large heavy item etrailer has to ship it by freight company. Had a lot of negative issues with the shipping part. After ordering the hitch I obtained an expected delivery date from etrailer & it was expected to arrive during a planned vacation. So I contact etrailer to reschedule the delivery date after my return which I was told was not a problem. However I then got a noticed that the hitch was shipped and the arrival date was the day before I left for vacay. This was not what I requested, but I'll make it work. However that day came and went. The hitch arrived to the freight company (Force) on time from etrailer, so we called Force and talked to an employee who said he call back in a hour (nothing). Next day we called and talked to another employee who said he call back in an hour (again nothing). Finally called and was able to get a supervisor that.gave us a believery date and we had to make arrangements on the delivery (remember vacay). The delivery date came and we never got a phone call from TForce or any kind of updated tracking until the afternoon when the delivery guy just showed up at the door step with the hitch. The driver was a good guy, but TForce Frieght CO gets a huge negative review. So I you order an item large enough to require a third party freight co try to make sure its not TForce Freight. I'm also a little put out that etrailer didn't schedule the delivery as requested.

Review from a similar Hijacker Autoslide in Fifth Wheel Hitch

One year later, I am still confident to know that our Demco Autoslider will perform to our expectations! Easy one person hookup using the trucks' camera system. No doubt about this hitch being a solidly built piece of equipment! Heavy? YES! But we all know this when purchasing! Cornering concerns? Not at all! This year traveling was cut short with a minor health issue. However, we are ready this fall to hook up the 5th wheel and hit the road before the winter shuts down the campgrounds in Michigan! We leave the hitch in the truck permanently as it's protected with a tonneau cover.

Works great except life would be so much simpler if they had a hole drilled on each side to remove the lock pins that are below it in the mounting plate to be able to remove the unit from the truck.

, a solid bracket in this instance is much better for strength, especially considering this hitch is designed around the universal rails for trucks.

We have some great aftermarket options for you that you can get from us here at etrailer.com. Aftermarket systems are typically less expensive than factory options without sacrificing safety, capacity, or features. For a complete underbed rail 5th wheel system for your 2017 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali,...

  • Using A Lippert Turning Point Pin Box With A Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch
The reason the Demco Capture Plates # DM6171 aren't working with your Lippert Turning Point pin box is because they were specifically designed for Trailair Rota-Flex pin boxes. Since you have a Demco Autoslide # DM8550037 you'll need to lockout your Turning Point pin box and allow rotation only at the hitch to king pin connection point. To do this you'll need to install two 5/8" - 11 x 2" in the lockout holes in the back of the pin box.

  • Auto Slide Hitch, Underbed Rail Kit, and Goose Neck Adapter For a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
With your 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 only having a 6-3/4 ft bed with out the OEM prep package it's recommended to use a slider to provide enough clearance between the nose of the camper and the cab of the truck. I recommend the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 21,000 lbs Item # DM8550037. This hitch provides you with the auto slide feature which takes the hassle away from getting out of your vehicle and pulling a lever to allow the hitch...

  • Can Demco Hijacker Autoslide 18K Be Converted To 21K?
The only difference between the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 18k # DM8550024 and the 21k # DM8550037 is the base assembly. Both use the same head, but the base is what gives each hitch its rating. To change the 18k to 21k you would need the 21k base and head assembly # DM6107 and the reuse the side brackets for mounting to your 5th wheel rails. The base is not available by itself.

  • Does Demco Hijacker Auto Slide Fifth Wheel Hitch Make Backing Trailer Up More Difficult
It would actually be easier to back a trailer up with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel hitch # DM8550037 than a standard sliding fifth wheel hitch because you wouldn't have to get out and operate the slider when you came to a tight turn. The pivot point wouldn't make the way the trailer reacts much different. It wouldn't cause it to be unpredictable while backing.

  • Can Fifth Wheel Trailer With MOR/Ryde Pin Box be Pulled Using Demco Hijacker Without Capture Plate?
If you are going to be using your Demco Hijacker # DM8550037 to get your fifth wheel home then you will need to first install Locking Plate # DM6025. Though I can imagine it is less than convenient for you, the locking plate is a requirement for using the Demco hitch with a MOR/ryde pin box.

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2013 Ram 3500 Diesel Short Bed Towing Sandpiper 379
5th wheel towing is possible with short-bed trucks but it is certainly easier with a long bed. Short bed trucks will require either a sliding type hitch or a fixed hitch along with a Sidewinder replacement pin box on the trailer in order for you to have enough turning clearance to avoid trailer-to-cab contact. Long bed trucks avoid this issue completely; they can use standard fixed hitches and a new Sidewinder pin box is not required. You can refer to the linked articles for more on this. If...

The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # DM8550037 has a shipping weight of just over 330 lbs though the head unit and base install separately. Still, it's a two-person job to remove it from the bed of your 2016 Ram 3500, even in a couple of pieces. Most fifth wheel hitches are going to be cumbersome, at the least, to regularly take in and out of the bed of your truck and the advantages of the Hijacker far outweigh its disadvantages. For starters, when you do...

The adapter is also rated for 21,000 pounds. There isn't a HiJacker as of 6/22/2017 that fits directly in the puck system on the short bed GMC and Chevy trucks with the factory prep package but it can be done provided you use the adapter.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Tonneau Cover Recommendation for 2017 Ram 3500 with Short Bed
For your 2017 Ram 3500 6-1/2 Foot Bed without Factory Rail Kit you'll need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. My favorite slider hitches are the ones that automatically slide as you make tight turns as that saves you the hassle of getting out and activating the slider every time it's needed. For that I would recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550037 and the install rail kit part # DM8551006. This is an underbed rail kit too which means when...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ram 3500
We do have a large selection of great fifth wheel hitches that will work well on your 2018 Ram 3500 to tow your DRV Mobile Suite trailer. If your Ram does not have the factory rail kit and has a 6-1/2 foot bed, I recommend a sliding hitch like the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550037. The general rule of thumb is that if you're towing a 5th wheel trailer with a truck that has a bed shorter than 8' then you will need a sliding hitch to gain clearance between the trailer and the cab of your vehicle while turning to prevent them from contacting one another,...

Or if you need a higher 21k capacity hitch you'd want the part # DM8550037 instead. If your truck has a standard suspension height you'd have nothing to worry about.
