Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A20 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel - Fixed Fifth Wheel - C16121 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A16 Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the base rails, the universal installation kit, and it has a 16,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth-wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth-wheel trailer. The hitch head on this uses a high strength interlocking two jaw system right here. It provides a nice 360 degree jaw-to-king-pin contact.Basically, these jaws will fully wrap around the king pin, help minimize noise. Gives you less rattle, more security than the slide bar models. The head on this, I can try to show you, it actually will go in all directions.

A fully articulating head instead of just front to back or side to side. That gives you much more controlled coupling and a stable quiet ride.It does self-align for easy hookup, suppresses road shock, and reduces bothersome towing noise. The jaws on it, they do have two built in grease Zerk fittings for easy lubrication. There's one on each jaw. You just put your grease gun on it and pump it full of grease.

One of the main features on this hitch is right here in the back. Now, I have this mounted so I won't be able to turn it around, but in the back here they have a three-point color-coded lock indicator system to ensure secure towing.Basically, it'll show you a color, and that will tell you what position your jaws are in. Right now, it's showing a green circle, which means your jaws are locked closed. You're ready to tow. If you open the jaws, it will show a yellow triangle, which will mean the jaws are open.

You're ready to couple. If it happens to show a red octagon, that means the jaws are locked open. It's uncoupled. You do not want to tow, and it'll self-reset.What's nice about it, these color-coded indicator system is visible from the cab. So, if you're here sitting in the cab, you can turn around and just look at that color and it will tell you what position those jaws are in.

The handle that they use, it's a single-throw handle operation to open the dual jaws. I'm going to demonstrate it at the end of the video how this all operates, but basically you just pull it out and pull it back. The jaws will pop right open.It has this pin and clip that you need to remove first. That keeps it locked in. The pin and clip is attached to this chain so that you don't lose it, and actually, it lines up with the hole when you drop the pin and clip through. If you want extra security, you could put a padlock through there. The hole is large enough. We do sell padlocks separately that you could drop through there if you want extra security. This handle will self-rest to the ready-to-couple position after you uncouple your trailer. Now, what's nice on this is this does offer a fast one-pin head removal for easy disassembly by one person. Basically right here, if you remove this clip, this large pin, this pivot pin, you can pull out the back and that allows you to take the head out from the cross member by one person. And then you can take it all apart, disassemble easily just using one person. Now, it does come with this plastic lube plate right here. This plastic lube plate is made to slip onto the king pin on your fifth wheel, helps it glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup, and it'll prevent any messy grease buildup on your hitch head. The installation hardware is all included. Detailed instruction manual over there. These are the universal brackets it comes with, and then these are the pin and clips that should hold it into the base rails. Now, this will offer a four inch hitch height adjustment. Basically, hitch height is critical because when you're towing, you want your fifth wheel as level as possible when it's being towed with your tow vehicle. The way you can make sure it's level is this center cross member has about three rows of holes in it, and when you bolt it to the legs, you can put it in different positions. So, you can gain anywheres from 13 inches to 17 inches, and hitch height is always measured from the top of the truckbed to the top of the hitch head. Now, the base rails I mentioned. The universal fit installation kit is all included. The universal kit will require drilling. Now, we do offer semi-custom brackets, which will make it a little bit easier. They are only available for certain vehicles. So I would recommend to go to our website, put in your year and model vehicle, and it will show if they're available for your vehicle. This hitch is a nice sturdy steel construction. It has a durable carbide powder coat finish to it. A few specs on it. The gross towing weight capacity is 16,000 pounds. Vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. You do want to make sure the capacity is always limited to the lowest rated towing component in your system. We mentioned your hitch height is adjustable from to 13 to 17 inches. The last note I do want to mention is this fifth-wheel hitch is compatible with rotating pin boxes such as the Reese Sidewinder, the Reese Revolution, and the 5th Airborne Sidewinder only when used with a wedge, which we do sell separately. What I'm going to try to show you now is the jaws, how you operate them, but again, here is your pin and clip. Normally, that would be installed and clipped to lock the handle into place. So, what you want to do to open them, you just remove your pin and clip, take your handle, just pull it out. Move it to the back, and you can see just like that, it's a very short throw. The jaws pop open, and as a I mentioned the color-coded system. If we look back here, it's showing a yellow triangle, which means they're open ready to couple. This an example of a king pin on your fifth wheel. That's what will slide in.Once it slides in between these jaws right here, and you can see once it gets far enough, the two jaws will come around, fully wrap around it, hold it into place. The handle automatically sets, the hole was lined up, and if you looked at the color again, it's showing a green circle. It means the jaws are locked. You're ready to tow. All you have to do is take your pin and clip, drop it into place, clip it, handle is locked. You're all ready to go, and then just to uncouple, just reverse it. Take your pin and clip out. Pull your handle, and it removes the king pin just like that. Very simple operation, but that should do it for the review on the Curt A16 Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the base rails, the universal installation kit, and it has a 16,000 pound weight capacity.

Good product. Fits my truck and works well pulling my 12,000 lb 5th wheel. The only complaint is the rubber wedge does not hold up against chucking of the hitch. It is already degraded and needs replacing. Otherwise a solid hitch. 609310

Let me say this: I have pulled and used a fifth wheel for over 20 years This Curt 16 is superior to all. Easy hook up, secure loading. It tells you when you are ready to load, loaded and lock the pin and how to uncouple with ease. It came with Ford legs and with works so good in my factory equipped Hitch in the bed. Great looking and compact. Excellent way to go. Very pleased and Thank You for suggesting the hitch. 353209

Heavy, but easy to assemble and install. Great service from etrailer.com from order to shipping. This is a heavy slider, so moving it out of the truck bed is challenging. Works as advertised. Good choice for short-bed pickup trucks. 525134

Comments
Slider hitch works well for our setup. Add a little grease and it is quiet when moving out of or into tow position.

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

"BEWARE"I read many reviews on this hitch, all but one were very good. The one negative review stated that his problem with a noisy hitch was quickly resolved with a replacement. My experience has not been good, I too had a noisy hitch, contacted Etrailer and they sent a replacement. Second hitch was just as noisy. Contacted Curt directly and am told this slop in hitch is by design! Their fix is to disconnect the factory brake controls and install theirs. Why was I not informed before purchase that this hitch bangs around unless you purchase an aftermarket control. It is very unnerving to know that your king pin is extremely loose within the hitch, banging back and forth on acceleration and stopping. 477715

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

First off I just got done installing the hitch and I hooked on my 35ft fith wheel trailer and went for a ride with windows down sun roof open and not a single rattle , clank , or noise from the bed of the truck with this hitch . It was easy to assemble but I did have one spot where the paint got chipped on the slider during shipping so I just touched it up . Very satisfied with hitch it latches automatically when you back in to it and the slider part works like it should . 294820

The hitch has worked very well and the swivel head makes for a smooth ride. My only complaint is that the stickers that indicate locked positions. Faded after a month and are now white.....but not a big deal. 411807

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Overall I am impressed with the product and the service etrailer provides. The shipping was fast and the prices vs local competitors was cheaper. I actually installed the same day I received the hitch. Unfortunately my fith wheel head has a small dent in it, I would assume from shipping, and my hardware bag was ripped open scattering throughout the box. To my surprise no hardware was missing. The dent did aggravate me a little as to the price of the product, but will not effect the performance. Etrailer did double box all three packages the shipped which was nice, however I'm not sure they'll make a profit with the amount of staples used in packaging haha. Overall happy to have great reviews on great products to help aid in the decision of my purchase of the Curt slider 16k fith wheel. Fits nicely in my 2013 Silverado 2500 short bed with my fold back cover still functioning when not in use. I did find during installation that the heat shield worked best for me bent up than cut, also I did remove the wheels for easier access but not a necessity. There might need to be clarity on the hardware not being used via instructions, and on the bed rib spacers on the diagram. Very pleased with my purchase and will recommend etrailer in the future. 479630

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I received my new hitch, slider package and puck system legs for my Ram 2500 and had it installed in about 2 hours. Backed up to my camper and connected with no problems once I got the camper king pin at the correct height. I like the overlapping jaws on this hitch much better my old hitch which didnt overlap. This just feels more secure. The hitch released and uncoupled with no problems. I'll be taking a trip with it soon and will know more about how it feels with 11,000 pounds connected to it but for now, very happy with my purchase. I cant submitt my review without adding some kudo's to etrailer and their customer service team. I had ordered a different hitch but had second thoughts as to it being a good match for my truck. One call to customer service confirmed my thoughts and i had a different system on order and delivered in 3 days. Awesome team. 488531

Still very happy with this setup. Have pulled our camper from South Georgia to the panhandle twice and as far north as Michigan since my first review. It works great and feels very secure when connected.

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Great hitch used it on a few trips already driven over 3,000 miles. Love the dual jaws and the adjustability, my truck sits a bit higher and I was able to adjust this down to get it where it needed to be- even with the Reese adapter plate(see photo). The polyurethane is also a nice touch, makes the ride a little more cozy then a standard hitch. Use with the provided lube plate 355598

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I LOVE my sliding hitch. Prior to this, I had a standard hitch and it was difficult to make some sharp turns with my 5th wheel RV due to a short bed in my pickup. The sliding hitch has solved this problem - I haven't had a turn that made me cringe thinking the camper would hit the cab! The only difficulty I have had is pulling the release to set the slide in motion has been a bit tough, but I think it will become easier the more it is used. I would encourage anyone with a 5th wheel RV to buy this type of hitch versus a standard. 612012

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

This is my first fifth wheel. I have a short bed so I got the package deal with the hitch and the slider. Took me about 5 hrs to install with the custom mounting brackets and rails for my 2015 chevy 2500 HD. Everything went as the instructions said without any issues. I have only pulled my RV with it one time just to try it out. Felt very smooth no rattles or pops as I have herd with other hitches. So far I like it a lot. 414028

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Customer service for product selection and order entry were excellent and focused on my interests and needs. The hitch, custom installation kit, and harness were shipped very quickly and arrived sooner than expected. Everything arrived in excellent condition. Assembly and installation instructions were very clear and specific, and I was able to assemble and install everything with no problems and in a very reasonable amount of time. Total cost was roughly half of what it would have been if I had purchased the products and had them installed by a dealer. I am very satisfied with my experience dealing with etrailer.com, and would highly recommend them to anyone shopping for towing products. 294100

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

I like the dual jaws. They hold the king pin tighter than the slide bar style. I also like the color coded hook indicator on the front, although a complete visual inspection should be done each time you hook. The only shortcomings I can see are the height, it's a little short even on the highest adjustment, and the quality of the Chinese fasteners leave a little to be desired. Other than that, it pulls securely and quietly. It couples and uncouples very smoothly. Overall it is a nice heavy duty piece. 137021

The first one I bought had some internal problems and became very loose around the kingpin when towing. I talked to an Etrailer rep and he put me in touch with the Curt manufacturer directly who sent me a new hitch and had me send the old one back at no expense to me. I was very pleased with Etrailers and Curts customer service. They listened, understood, and solved the problem very quickly once it was identified. Thank you, and I WILL look to you for my further trailer needs.

Review from a similar A16 in Fifth Wheel Hitch

Fifth wheel jaws grave a lot of slack, when stopping and staring trailer slams forward and backwards. I bought the slider due to having a short bed truck and never used it 1 time in a little less than a year. Hitch also rusted within a few months. Hitch is unbelievably heavy, it required at least 2-3 people to remove or install. I have sold the hitch and installed the Reese goose box on my fifth wheel and like it so far. I love not having the heavy hitch in my truck all the time. 604885

Hitch came at expected time. UPS guy says, oh my that's heavy, I helped. Got it installed easy enough but then I thought, wow, the new truck is taller, the new hitch is taller, how is this going to work out? Well it did. I raised the trailer pin box to max, 2". The RV rides a little higher than before, but acceptable. Good transaction. Thank you. 713738

I am writing this review more for etrailer, than for the hitch. I am happy with the hitch, and it is what I expected, but more than that, I am happy with the support that etrailer personnel provided. They researched the product, gave me all the options, and made sure that it was exactly what we needed. It is rare to find the level of support that etrailer gives their customers, and great prices to go with it! 466656

Purchased this hitch, install kit, and wiring harness for a new to me 2015 F-250. After watching the installation video and reviewing the included instructions the install went smoothly. The only deviation from the instructions was instead of using a unibit to drill the 9/16" holes in the bed I used a Rotobroach hole cutter(the holes are cleaner and the bit does not drift. I hooked in to my fifth wheel for the first time on Saturday. 696986
