Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Assembly of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into the hole in your truck bed. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part number BWRVK3500-5W. This 5th wheel companion is going to be great for hooking up any 5th wheel trailers that you may have, but also if you have gooseneck trailers, it works great because this goes into gooseneck rails that you can use the gooseneck ball with. What's really nice about this 5th wheel companion is that you can completely remove it from the bed, so when you take it out, you've got a full bed access and there are no cross rails left behind. It features a dual jaw design. It's going to give you 360 degrees of coverage around your king pin. Unlike slide bar jaws, the rounded 2 piece jaw in this 5th wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hook up and a safer quieter ride. In order to operate those dual jaws, you simply remove the pin from the handle here and then this handle is a cam action, so as you pull the handle back, it's going to open up the jaws and then you can slide your king pin in.

Then when that king pin hits and makes pressure, it'll close it and lock around it with that 360 degrees and you can replace your pin. The head on this tilts both front to back and side to side and with the weight of the dual jaw and cam action lever set up, it's not going to lock up on you when you're on uneven ground so you shouldn't have a problem getting your king pin out from your 5th wheel hitch. It features a 5,000 pound vertical load limit and a 20,000 pound gross towing rating. Through the opening in the side rail here, you can see that we've got multiple holes which allows you to give the proper adjustment for whatever your truck's needs are. If you need it to sit a little bit higher, a little bit lower or a little bit further forward or back, this is going to allow you to do that with all those points of adjustability. The overall hitch height can be adjusted from 16-1/4 inches to 18-1/4 inches. Here on the bottom of the rail, it's got these plastic pads that what they do is go down into the low ribs of the bed's corrugation to provide a nice fit and they are adjustable throughout the slot here so then you can tighten them down once you have them lined up inside those low ribs.

No modifications are required to your truck or trailer and no additional parts are required for the system to work. That's going to complete our look at the B&W Companion 5th wheel trailer hitch, part number BWRVK3500-5W.

This was our first fifth wheel hitch we purchased. SInce we already had the B & W turnover ball installed in our truck this was the obvious choice. It was shipped very fast and after reading all the instructions first my husband and I were able to install this in about an hour and a half. Have pulled with it already and its easy to use, safe and very quiet. Spend the extra few dollars and go with the best ! 191913

I own a RAM 3500 with an 8ft bed. The truck came with the B&W gooseneck base. I was hesitant on buying the companion because my previous 5th wheel hitches were installed on ISD. The companion is a great product and very easy instructions and installation. What I like most about the hitch is that the base can be swapped out for a slider if you have a smaller truck bed. Great quality, made in the US and easy installation. Etrailer had the lowest price and customer service was terrific. 343171

--------------This is a very strong hitch with an innovative mount.-------------------- I have been using the hitch for about a year now. I purchased the combo kit with the gooseneck in bed parts as well as the 5th wheel assembly. I purchased this unit because it can provide both the gooseneck and 5th wheel modes. I installed mine in a 2014 RAM 3500 DRW which already has the basic structure under the bed so the install went very well. I completed the install at home, which took about 4-5 hours. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, plus there are several installation demonstration videos online for my exact truck, so after watching those it was no problem. The 5th wheel works well with no squeaks or rattles. I pull a 35' 13,500lb toy hauler. The hitch parts are made of thick heavy steel which really gives confidence it will pull the heavy loads. The king pin jaws also seem a bit larger and more heavy duty than other hitches with the same ratings. The hitch also has a lot of adjustments both up and down, and for and aft, which helped to dial in the hitch very well to my trailer. It does convert from 5th wheel to gooseneck easy enough. Just remember it does require a socket to relieve the tension on the gooseneck adapter before it can be released. This is not a big deal, just makes sure to bring a wrench along if you are planning to swap modes while away from home. There is only one small aspect that keeps me from rating the hitch as excellent. I have noticed that the paint/coating scrapped of rather easily in the mouth of the coupler. I guess I rubbed the side of the mouth with the trailer pin when coupling up and it caused the paint to scrape off. Since then the coating is also starting to peel all around the jaw area. 264228

Pretty easy install. Spend the 5 minutes to take the heat shield and spare tire off. The little rubber "gripper" on the handle pulled off the first pull. Maybe B&W could put a little glue on it . 380980

B and W companion 5th wheel hitch on 2016 Ram 3500. Easy install, good directions. 20,000 pound capacity, will easily tow toy hauler. Removes easily to have full bed access or to use the gooseneck hitch which you will need for companion hitches. Very fast delivery. Thank you.

I would like to say that I was not looking forward to putting this hitch on my truck. I heard nothing but nightmares and horror stories, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. I had a friend come over to help (glad I did cause that turnoverball hitch would have been a bear to hold up by yourself. It was ten times easier than I would have imagined. Just follow the instructions and it's a piece of cake. We had the turnover all hitch on in less than 2 hours. Unfortunately I had a rusted brake line that I had to repair before completing the job. Haven't used it yet but can't wait to hitch it up and hit the road. Thanks for making this hitch so easy to install. I'm glad it's American made and extremely heavy duty. 539585

Just finished installing my B&W Companion 5th Wheel hitch. I hooked to my RV to check my instillation, everything went very smooth. I would recommend this hitch to anyone with a Gooseneck turnover ball B&W hitch installed in there truck bed. Great product, very easy instillation. 310924

We received our new BW Companion hitch on time. Noticed that our BW Turnover Ball hitch already installed in truck required a shorter socket post one week out from our trip. With a quick discussion with the great people at etrailer as well as BW, we had the new socket post shipped and installed prior to leaving town. Easy install - All worked as designed. So glad to have responsive parties involved here to help us out. Thanks! 526278

I also bought The Pollack t connector that was also easy to use. The install was done at home and easy to understand. Thanks again. 372927

This was an update from the original B&W Companion. B&W is hands down the best on the market. Product arrived fast (3 days). And everything was included for the installation which took me 2 hours. The only negative was the box that had the base was beat up pretty good and a box inside had come out. Kudos to UPS because they kept track of that box and I received everything. etrailer is a great supplier. 798952

I love my B&W filth wheel, I do commercial hauling from factories to dealerships all over the U.S. and I travel 4000 plus miles each week. My B&W filth wheel has never let me down and the double locking jaw is awesome. I get a lot of good comments on my filth wheel and I just tell it like it is, I love it and wouldn’t want any other. 798639

I got this hitch 2 years ago and I love it. Easy to use. My only beef is it's best feature, the weight. You have to be one strong individual to lift this unit,( thankfully I am ). I do suggest installing a remote cable hoist in your garage to lift and lower this beast. I love the fact that it mounts under the bed of my truck, so when it's not in my truck, my bed is empty with no rails obstructing the bed. Great product! 757007

  • Best Fifth Wheel Hitch for 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500 Towing 41-Foot 2017 Montana Fifth Wheel Trailer
That's a very nice set-up you have there and the best fifth-wheel hitch to add is the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500-5W which you would mount in the bed of your 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500 with the Custom Underbed Installation Kit # BWGNRK1016-5W. This is the set-up you would want to use if your Silverado did not have the factory fifth wheel rails with the pucks in the bed of your truck. If you did have that the Companion # BWRVK3700 will fit directly in the pucks of your Silverado. The Companion...

  • Can Spacer Blocks be Used on Fifth Wheel Trailer to Get Nose Down
We do not generally recommend using a spacer block because it can cause the trailer to bounce more and its suspension to wear out more quickly. One option is to use the Lippert Components Tandem Axle Lift Kit # LC407131, which will add 2 inches of lift, so long as the trailer is a tandem axle. • Can B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Be Used with Plastic Bedliner
I checked with B&W and with the Companion hitch # BWRVK3500-5W you would either need to remove the bedliner or trim it in the footprint of the entire base so it will have direct contact with the bed. The B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W is compatible with any B&W gooseneck hitch unless it is installed on a flatbed truck. In that case you'd need part # BWRVK3050 instead which is specially designed for flatbed truck use.
