Video of Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Round Shaft - LH
Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer installation instructions and specs for complete information.
Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install ramp springs for the 2000 pound torque rate for inch and a half shafts. The left hand side is part number RS16933LH, and for the right, you'll need part number RS16933RH.Now, these springs are designed to aid you in lowering and lifting these heavy ramps. If you don't have any springs installed, you know it can be quite a bit of a pain. As you're lowering your ramp down, you kind of have to be under it. You don't want to just let it drop .. Well, I guess you can, but you might cause damage to it, and vice versa. When you're trying to lift it up, you're going to lift up the entire weight.
With the springs installed, they've got a 2000 pound tension rating, so as we lower the gate, as we raise the gate, it's going to be much, much easier. Now, this is what I would call a medium/heavy duty utility type trailer. We'll also show you on a very heavy duty utility type trailer, the use of two of them for those much larger ramps, the triangulated style ramps. Those tend to be a lot heavier, so we'll show you that, as well.Just to give you an idea, however your ramp's held in place, you'll want to, of course, unsecure that, and then you'll see our ramp's going to come down much easier. It actually kind of floats there. We'll push that down.
That'll keep it closer to the ground. We can get our equipment on and off, then when it's time to shut them back up, much easier process than what you're probably used to, especially if you don't have springs, or if your current springs aren't in good working order. You can see our old spring. It's become worn, and it's not near as effective as it was. You see how that's pointing off, kind of in that rearward direction It just means it's been fatigued over time, so we're going to be able to replace it with a new spring. It's going to give us much more effect. Now, the left hand and right hand is going to determine which side of the pin you're going to be putting it on.
If you want it on the right side, you want a right hand spring, and if it's going on the left side, you're going to want your left hand spring. To ensure we get years of great service out of the ramp springs, they're made of a high quality alloy spring steel, so they're going to return to their original position for years and years. To ensure you have plenty of room, we're going to go over the specifications of the spring, just to give you an idea about the size. From outside of our spring to outside of our spring, we've got 2 1/2 inches. Inside and inside's going to be about and inch and a half. From the spring itself, to the end of each arm that sticks out, is going to be 4 inches, so you definitely want to keep that in mind, and make sure that you've got clearance for that, and also that, that spring will make contact with something within that 4 inch range. To begin your installation, you'll need to remove whatever's holding in your hinge pin. It's going to be the large inch and a half diameter pin that runs through here.
In our case, we've got a bolt and a nylon lock washer. We're going to use a 9/16 to get that removed. You also want to hang on to your hardware, because you're going to need this to put it back in. It keeps this pin from sliding in and out. You can see our old spring mounted here. We'll move our pin out, and the idea is to free that up. Now, this ramp's going to be very heavy, and when you pull that pin, it's going to want to fall down. You need somebody to give you a hand, or if you can handle it yourself, however you want to do it, just make sure, as you pull this pin, that, that doesn't fall down and hurt you. Now, we can remove that old spring, set it aside, and replace it with our new one. Now, we're going to be putting our spring on the other side. We've got an accommodation for one here or here, so it doesn't matter how you want to do it. Make sure you get it where you need it, though. Then, our gate hinge is going to go right in between there. As we install it, we can place that pin through. Now, as we replace our ramp onto the trailer, and install our pin, of course, we want to ensure that the pin passes through the middle of our spring, and we also want to make sure that the flange on the ramp goes in between the spring and the flange on our trailer. Now, to finish it up, we'll just reinstall the hardware that we removed to take that old one off.As we said, with these really heavy ramps, they look about the same as the other ones, but they're much thicker steel. It really is a problem, when it comes time to lower them. You're going to have to fight it. You're really going to have to put weight into it, and it can be slightly dangerous. If you have anything underneath there without steel toes on, you'll likely run into something. Same way, going up. Just make sure you get a good hold it.Then, you're putting yourself right underneath them, so if you we're to slip or your hand comes off, it can come back at you. Those springs are going to help us out a lot, with that situation. Now, just like before, we're pulling that pin out, although this time, we don't have any keepers to put it in, so we'll slide this one on, just like that, bring the pin in, a little further, we can get our other one put on.After we have our springs installed, there's a huge difference in the operation of our ramp. We'll go through that same process as before. You could see it actually hold my ramp there. At that point, we just need to press it down a little bit. That's going to make it much easier getting our equipment up and on it.Now, to raise it up, it takes a lot less effort, as well.Overall, our ramps are going to be much easier to use, but a big key is, they're also going to be much safer. That'll complete our look at the ramp springs.

A good product. Unfortunately the two spring were not strong enough to help control the lowering of the hinged door (8x8ft drawbridge style 2x4 door). 623216
Product was as described & fit was good. Delivery was faster than stated. Will require some mods to trailer to gain the best benefit from springs. Will order from etrailer in the future for my trailer needs. 347825
Im very pleased with my parts. They were delivered in a timely manner. Once I installed they worked perfectly and will purchase from etrailer with all my trailer needs.
Our company installed these to assist with heavy folding ramps on a customer's trailer. They really helped with reducing the effort needed to fold the ramps up from the ground. We used 2 springs per ramp. Great product & great price. 498944
These ramp springs really took the work out of raising and lowering my heavy 3 fold ramps needed for a more long and level approach to our 10 ton trailer. I always looked for help when needing to raise them, now I can almost do it with one hand. It took a little work installing them because the old system had to be rebuilt somewhat. I kept the same 1" pins and used a 1 1/16" ID X 1 1/2" OD sleeve for the springs to work on. They were well worth my time. I`d rate this an excellent product. 356439
Still work great! They gave me a lot more flexability moving equipment without always looking for a hand or trying to raise them myself.
My gooseneck trailer has the extra wide ramps on it. Each ramp covers half the trailer. These ramp springs definitely help raise the ramps. I only wish the fingers (as I call them) were about 2 inches longer. 478344
Exactly what I needed. Good price and it was shipped quickly. Online descriptions were thourough. 16617
Can someone tell me how to install trailer assist springs, please!
-- comment by: David - 07/19/2013The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. To use this spring on your trailer you must have ramp hinge with a 1-1/2 inch diameter rod or pipe where the ramp meets the trailer. The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and trailer when the ramp is in the up position. The spring should not be welded to the ramp or trailer, the tension and the rod will hold the spring in place. The springs we carry are designed for heavyweight steel doors or ramps commonly found on heavy equipment trailers or car haulers. If your trailer is not set up to accept a hinge spring, a hinge would need to be fabricated and installed.
--7h x 8.5w door with wt. of appx.100lbs. ?how many and what size helper springs will I need to install for appx.20-30lb.force to pick-up?
-- comment by: kim k - 08/13/2013The ramp springs like part RS16933LH that we carry are meant for heavy ramps, not for a 100 lb door. They do make springs like these for trailer ramps that weigh considerably less, but we do not carry them, nor do our suppliers. If you have an enclosed trailer, you might be able to use something like this part, ERS160D96.
--We installed spring and lowered ramp. Spring bent and did not assist on lifting ramp anymore. Very disappointed 525056
The ramp spring is designed to be used with a 1 ½ round pipe not a square pipe which might cause the ramp spring to bind. You also may want to use more than one spring on heavier ramps.
--Used for a trailer ramp assist, worked great with a little improvising. 732183
Spring was as described and replaced the old one perfectly 715470

Excellent service! Timely and everything was just like etrailer said. That is unusual in today's world and is very appreciated 577836
They work well, delivery was very fast. Some fabrication was needed to support leg of spring in the correct way but that's to be expected. I built it in a way that the spring can be adjusted to compensate for fatigue over the years. 555873
Fast shipment 541466

They worked great 474957
got what i orderd! 471469
The springs look great. they were poking out of the box. They are what I ordered But I ordered Wrong. I need springs with a combined lift of 2,500 in/lbs 470651
I still have them, sitting on my garage floor, in the original box that I received them in. They are the WRONG SIZE, and when I wanted to return them (yes, more than 30 days after the purchase), I was advised that they would accept them, but I needed to send them via UPS, and they will deduct about half the price I bought them for, to cover for their shipping. SO, I am NOT happy, and will never buy from you again... SORRY! 463539
