Can someone tell me how to install trailer assist springs, please!

comment by: David - 07/19/2013

The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. To use this spring on your trailer you must have ramp hinge with a 1-1/2 inch diameter rod or pipe where the ramp meets the trailer. The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and trailer when the ramp is in the up position. The spring should not be welded to the ramp or trailer, the tension and the rod will hold the spring in place. The springs we carry are designed for heavyweight steel doors or ramps commonly found on heavy equipment trailers or car haulers. If your trailer is not set up to accept a hinge spring, a hinge would need to be fabricated and installed.

The ramp springs like part RS16933LH that we carry are meant for heavy ramps, not for a 100 lb door. They do make springs like these for trailer ramps that weigh considerably less, but we do not carry them, nor do our suppliers. If you have an enclosed trailer, you might be able to use something like this part, ERS160D96.

Do you have a question about this Enclosed Trailer Part?

  • Choosing/Sizing the Correct Trailer Ramp Spring for a Ramp Door
  • When selecting ramp springs for a trailer ramp, you will want to know the diameter of your hinge pin and how much space you have available in the hinge. A typical horse trailer or utility trailer ramp uses 3/4 inch hinge pins and would require two ramp springs with a 3/4 inch inner diameter. The ramp springs that we carry fit 1-1/2 inch diameter hinge pins and are designed for use with heavy-duty steel ramps like those on equipment trailers or car haulers. The spring slips over the...

  • Replacement Trailer Ramp Springs
  • We have several hinge pins like # HP412G that I have linked for you, but it sounds like you need actual springs. We have some heavy duty ramp springs like # RS16933RH and # RS16933LH if you happen to have a heavy duty equipment trailer like what they haul tractors and other large equipment on. For an open utility trailer you may be able to use a tailgate assist like # RA-27C. Or for an enclosed trailer we have springs that are similar to garage door systems. I have linked those as well....

  • Ramp Spring Weight Capacity and Left or Right Hand Orientation for a Horse Trailer
  • The right hand ramp spring, item # RS16933RH, and the left hand spring, item # RS16933LH, are differentiated by paint on the springs from the manufacturer. The springs with green paint on them are right side springs, left side springs are unpainted. Right side springs will go on the right side of a ramp and left hand springs go on the left side of a ramp. Both right and left hand springs deflect in the same direction the designation of right and left has to do with orientation of the stick...

  • Recommendations for Converting a Swing Door on a Trailer to a Door Ramp
  • Converting from a double swing doors to a ramp door can definitely be done, it will require some fabrication and ingenuity on your part. I can help you pick out some of the more important components needed for this, but I will not be able to tell you every step of the way. The first thing you will need is a ramp/door. You will want to measure the opening of the rear of your trailer to get the correct size for the ramp. Without knowing how much weight will be on the ramp it is hard to...

  • Choosing the Correct Ramp Springs for Enclosed Cargo Trailer
  • The springs you mentioned are designed for use on an existing door hinge that uses a 1-1/2 diameter rod or pipe as a hinge pin. The spring would be slipped over the pipe and there would need to be gaps of at least 2-1/2 inches in the hinge barrel on the door and on the trailer to allow room for the width of the spring. The ramp springs are not designed for lightweight doors that have an aluminum skin and a wood core. The correct springs for your application will depend on what you...

  • Can a Pace Trailer Ramp Be Adjusted to Open Easier After the Torsion Ramp Spring Cable Breaks
  • Since your Pace trailer was using an Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring, like # ERS160D96, if you want the spring to function again you will need to have a qualified professional work on it, one with experience with torsion springs (like a garage door company). Without the cable and spring in good working order, the ramp will never operate as easily as it did before. That is unless you repair the old spring or install a new one. I have included a link to our springs. You may be able to use...

  • Availability of Enclosed Trailer Hinge Ramp Springs
  • I do believe we have the springs that you are looking for, but they are not part of a kit. We have a left, # RS16933LH, and a right, # RS16933RH. These springs are for a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft. They will need to be welded into place with the two arms facing down and flat against the trailer and door surfaces. Each spring is rated for 2,000 pounds torque to help with lifting and lowering ramp doors on trailers.

  • Dimensions and Lift Capacity of Ramp Spring # RS16933LH
  • I contacted our representative at Redline about Ramp Spring, part # RS16933LH. He informed me that the overall length of the spring is approximately 10-1/2 Inches and the width of the spring is 3-3/4 Inches. The measurement from each ear to center of spring is about 5-1/4 Inches, and the spring is made to fit over 1-1/2 Inch bar. The metal rod that forms the spring is just under 1/2 Inch in diameter. I used photoshop to show the dimensions of Ramp Spring, part # RS16933LH, (see picture). For...

  • Heavy-Duty Ramp Spring Availability

  • What is the Torque Specifications for Heavy Duty Trailer Ramp Spring # RS16933RH
  • Ramp spring # RS16933RH is designed for heavy duty equipment trailers and it is rated for 2K torque rating. The matching left side is # RS16933LH. For light duty trailers these springs would be way too strong. We do have other options such as # ERS120D81 designed for enclosed trailers. These springs come in a few different lengths from 66 inches wide to 96 inches wide and can be trimmed a little on the ends to fit in between sizes. For open utility trailers I recommend the Rack'em...

  • How to Make Raising and Lowering a Heavy Trailer Ramp Easier
  • You wouldn't use a spring like # RS16933LH because it produces 2,000 foot pounds of torque and you would not be able to open the ramp. What I recommend is either the Rack'em Double Barrel tailgate assist, # RA-27C. The Double Barrel will reduce a 134 pound ramp to less than 5 pounds and works in both directions and for ramps up to 200 pounds. I linked a video showing how the Double Barrel installs.

  • The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. • Trailer Ramp Springs for a 20 Ton Tandem Axle Trailer
  • That sounds like a very heavy duty trailer. For heavy duty trailers there are special ramp springs, # RS16933RH for right hand side and # RS16933LH for left hand side. They fit a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft or hinge pin. We do not have a pin that large. I have included a link to a video review of the springs for you. The other springs we carry are all lighter duty for enclosed consumer trailers and probably would not be strong enough to fit your 20 ton trailer.

  • Replacement Springs for Ramp Door on Continental Cargo Enclosed Trailer
  • I believe you're referring to the # RS16933LH spring, is that correct? These springs aren't meant for an enclosed trailer with a ramp door, they're meant for the very heavy steel ramps you'd typically see on the back of a trailer used to haul heavy equipment like bulldozers. Your best bet would be to use a ramp spring like what you're already using, like part # ERS120D81.
