Video Transcript for Ramp Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install ramp springs for the 2000 pound torque rate for inch and a half shafts. The left hand side is part number RS16933LH, and for the right, you'll need part number RS16933RH.Now, these springs are designed to aid you in lowering and lifting these heavy ramps. If you don't have any springs installed, you know it can be quite a bit of a pain. As you're lowering your ramp down, you kind of have to be under it. You don't want to just let it drop .. Well, I guess you can, but you might cause damage to it, and vice versa. When you're trying to lift it up, you're going to lift up the entire weight.

With the springs installed, they've got a 2000 pound tension rating, so as we lower the gate, as we raise the gate, it's going to be much, much easier. Now, this is what I would call a medium/heavy duty utility type trailer. We'll also show you on a very heavy duty utility type trailer, the use of two of them for those much larger ramps, the triangulated style ramps. Those tend to be a lot heavier, so we'll show you that, as well.Just to give you an idea, however your ramp's held in place, you'll want to, of course, unsecure that, and then you'll see our ramp's going to come down much easier. It actually kind of floats there. We'll push that down.

That'll keep it closer to the ground. We can get our equipment on and off, then when it's time to shut them back up, much easier process than what you're probably used to, especially if you don't have springs, or if your current springs aren't in good working order. You can see our old spring. It's become worn, and it's not near as effective as it was. You see how that's pointing off, kind of in that rearward direction It just means it's been fatigued over time, so we're going to be able to replace it with a new spring. It's going to give us much more effect. Now, the left hand and right hand is going to determine which side of the pin you're going to be putting it on.

If you want it on the right side, you want a right hand spring, and if it's going on the left side, you're going to want your left hand spring. To ensure we get years of great service out of the ramp springs, they're made of a high quality alloy spring steel, so they're going to return to their original position for years and years. To ensure you have plenty of room, we're going to go over the specifications of the spring, just to give you an idea about the size. From outside of our spring to outside of our spring, we've got 2 1/2 inches. Inside and inside's going to be about and inch and a half. From the spring itself, to the end of each arm that sticks out, is going to be 4 inches, so you definitely want to keep that in mind, and make sure that you've got clearance for that, and also that, that spring will make contact with something within that 4 inch range. To begin your installation, you'll need to remove whatever's holding in your hinge pin. It's going to be the large inch and a half diameter pin that runs through here.

In our case, we've got a bolt and a nylon lock washer. We're going to use a 9/16 to get that removed. You also want to hang on to your hardware, because you're going to need this to put it back in. It keeps this pin from sliding in and out. You can see our old spring mounted here. We'll move our pin out, and the idea is to free that up. Now, this ramp's going to be very heavy, and when you pull that pin, it's going to want to fall down. You need somebody to give you a hand, or if you can handle it yourself, however you want to do it, just make sure, as you pull this pin, that, that doesn't fall down and hurt you. Now, we can remove that old spring, set it aside, and replace it with our new one. Now, we're going to be putting our spring on the other side. We've got an accommodation for one here or here, so it doesn't matter how you want to do it. Make sure you get it where you need it, though. Then, our gate hinge is going to go right in between there. As we install it, we can place that pin through. Now, as we replace our ramp onto the trailer, and install our pin, of course, we want to ensure that the pin passes through the middle of our spring, and we also want to make sure that the flange on the ramp goes in between the spring and the flange on our trailer. Now, to finish it up, we'll just reinstall the hardware that we removed to take that old one off.As we said, with these really heavy ramps, they look about the same as the other ones, but they're much thicker steel. It really is a problem, when it comes time to lower them. You're going to have to fight it. You're really going to have to put weight into it, and it can be slightly dangerous. If you have anything underneath there without steel toes on, you'll likely run into something. Same way, going up. Just make sure you get a good hold it.Then, you're putting yourself right underneath them, so if you we're to slip or your hand comes off, it can come back at you. Those springs are going to help us out a lot, with that situation. Now, just like before, we're pulling that pin out, although this time, we don't have any keepers to put it in, so we'll slide this one on, just like that, bring the pin in, a little further, we can get our other one put on.After we have our springs installed, there's a huge difference in the operation of our ramp. We'll go through that same process as before. You could see it actually hold my ramp there. At that point, we just need to press it down a little bit. That's going to make it much easier getting our equipment up and on it.Now, to raise it up, it takes a lot less effort, as well.Overall, our ramps are going to be much easier to use, but a big key is, they're also going to be much safer. That'll complete our look at the ramp springs.

A good product. Unfortunately the two spring were not strong enough to help control the lowering of the hinged door (8x8ft drawbridge style 2x4 door). 623216

Our company installed these to assist with heavy folding ramps on a customer's trailer. They really helped with reducing the effort needed to fold the ramps up from the ground. We used 2 springs per ramp. Great product & great price. 498944

These ramp springs really took the work out of raising and lowering my heavy 3 fold ramps needed for a more long and level approach to our 10 ton trailer. I always looked for help when needing to raise them, now I can almost do it with one hand. It took a little work installing them because the old system had to be rebuilt somewhat. I kept the same 1" pins and used a 1 1/16" ID X 1 1/2" OD sleeve for the springs to work on. They were well worth my time. I`d rate this an excellent product. 356439

Comments

Still work great! They gave me a lot more flexability moving equipment without always looking for a hand or trying to raise them myself.

My gooseneck trailer has the extra wide ramps on it. Each ramp covers half the trailer. These ramp springs definitely help raise the ramps. I only wish the fingers (as I call them) were about 2 inches longer. 478344

Can someone tell me how to install trailer assist springs, please!

-- comment by: David - 07/19/2013

The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. To use this spring on your trailer you must have ramp hinge with a 1-1/2 inch diameter rod or pipe where the ramp meets the trailer. The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and trailer when the ramp is in the up position. The spring should not be welded to the ramp or trailer, the tension and the rod will hold the spring in place. The springs we carry are designed for heavyweight steel doors or ramps commonly found on heavy equipment trailers or car haulers. If your trailer is not set up to accept a hinge spring, a hinge would need to be fabricated and installed.

The ramp springs like part RS16933LH that we carry are meant for heavy ramps, not for a 100 lb door. They do make springs like these for trailer ramps that weigh considerably less, but we do not carry them, nor do our suppliers. If you have an enclosed trailer, you might be able to use something like this part, ERS160D96.

We installed spring and lowered ramp. Spring bent and did not assist on lifting ramp anymore. Very disappointed 525056

Comments

The ramp spring is designed to be used with a 1 ½ round pipe not a square pipe which might cause the ramp spring to bind. You also may want to use more than one spring on heavier ramps.

Ask the Experts about this Redline Enclosed Trailer Parts

Do you have a question about this Enclosed Trailer Part?

  • Ramp Springs Compatible With 1982 Circle J 2-Horse Trailer
  • I have a couple solutions for you, but we don't carry the exact springs you are referring to. I recommend the Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft - Right Hand # RS16933RH and Left Hand # RS16933LH. These springs are 11 inches long and have a 1-1/2 inch shaft and are 2-1/2 inches wide. The inner diameter of the coil is 1-1/2 inches. Another option is to use the Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring - Dual Spring, 81" Wide # ERS120D81. I've attached a photo with all of the measurements...

  • Recommended Ramp Torsion Spring for 82-Inch Wide Enclosed Trailer
  • The best size of trailer ramp spring for your trailer is going to be the 81-inch dual torsion spring # ERS120D81. This dimension is the end-to-end length as you'll see in the video. This unit consists of two torsion springs on one shaft and it has a capacity of 120-lbs. This spring can be bolted or welded to the trailer header and it comes complete with dual cables and hardware. Please note that this spring is intended to be installed by someone who has experience with torsions springs....

  • Trailer Ramp Spring for 1-1/2 Inch Diameter Shaft
  • We do not have springs for 1-3/4 inch shafts. But for a 1-1/2 inch shaft you can use spring # RS16933RH for the right side or # RS16933LH for the left side. These are meant to be welded on at the straight parts of the springs. Other than these two springs we do not have any others for a 1-1/2 inch or any for 1-3/4 inch shafts.

  • Recommended Gate/Ramp Assist and Hinge for Trailer Build
  • The 2K Torque Ramp Spring # RS16933RH is an industrial strength spring. It is designed for up to 90 degrees of deflection, but most people by hand can cause no deflection at all. It is designed to be used with the LH # RS16933LH, and is for heavy ramps or doors like in the attached photo. I would assume it is too strong for your application based on your wording. You may want to consider a different style spring like the Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring - Dual Spring, 81" Wide # ERS120D81...

  • Recommended Hinges And Ramp Assist For Steel Ramp
  • For your ramp, I recommend a hinge like the Ramp Door Hinge - Steel # PLR1902 or the Dump Door Hinge - Steel # PLR1904-Z. Both of these have a built in zerk grease fitting. Then you can use springs like # RS16933RH and # RS16933LH. If you want further help in lifting and lowering, I recommend the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist w/ Chain - 200 lbs # RA-27C that can be used on either side or both.

  • Big Tex Trailer Ramp Replacement Springs
  • We only carry the springs for those heavy duty style ramps. For the springs we have the Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft - left hand # RS16933LH and corresponding right hand # RS16933RH. The other parts will need to be either straightened or replaced and custom welded into place.

  • Will the Ramp Springs Part RS16933LH and Part RS16933RH Work With a 200 Lb Ramp
  • Yes, the Ramp Spring part # RS16933LH for the left hand side and part # RS16933RH for the right hand side would work well with a 200 lb ramp. So long as the diameter of your shaft is 1-1/2" you will be good to go.

  • How to Choose the Correct Ramp Spring for a Trailer
  • A ramp door spring rated for 4k in/lbs of torque is going to offer more assistance than a ramp door spring rated for 2k in/lbs of torque. However, choosing the highest rated door spring available is not in your best interest. If the spring was rated too high then the ramps would more or less have a mind of their own and will be very jerking when lifting and lowering. If the spring was rated too low then it would not offer enough assistance and the ramps would feel very heavy and difficult...

The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and trailer when the ramp is in the up position. • Availability of Enclosed Trailer Hinge Ramp Springs
  • I do believe we have the springs that you are looking for, but they are not part of a kit. We have a left, # RS16933LH, and a right, # RS16933RH. These springs are for a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft. They will need to be welded into place with the two arms facing down and flat against the trailer and door surfaces. These ramps provide 2,000 lbs of torque which would be needed for a ramp that weighs as much as yours and is as long as yours. The spring is designed for a 1-1/2 inch shaft, but we have checked before and have been told that it will still work fine on a 1-1/4 inch shaft as well.

But each of these springs produces 2,000 foot pounds of torque so they may be way too strong for your ramp. • 1990 Kingston Trailer Ramp Lift Assist Options
  • We have a couple options for trailer ramps springs. The first one will work great if your ramp rides on a 1-1/2 inch shaft. For that you would want the Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft - RH # RS16933RH or # RS16933LH. Or we have ramp springs like the Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring - Dual, 81" Wide # ERS120D81, this spring installs like a garage door spring. There is a lot of tension, so you want to make sure it is installed by someone who knows how to compress these springs...

  • What is Actual Torque Rating for Redline Ramps Springs # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH
  • The Redline Ramp Spring you referenced, part # RS16933LH, and the matching right-hand spring, part # RS16933RH, are intended primarily for use on equipment trailers, such as those used to transport a skid loader for example, not for utility-type trailers. These springs have an inside coil diameter of approximately 1-1/2-inches (and are intended for a 1-1/2-inch shaft). The wire diameter as measured with a digital caliper is 0.465 inches. I checked the Redline catalog and with my contact...

  • Can a Pace Trailer Ramp Be Adjusted to Open Easier After the Torsion Ramp Spring Cable Breaks
  • Since your Pace trailer was using an Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring, like # ERS160D96, if you want the spring to function again you will need to have a qualified professional work on it, one with experience with torsion springs (like a garage door company). Without the cable and spring in good working order, the ramp will never operate as easily as it did before. That is unless you repair the old spring or install a new one. I have included a link to our springs. You may be able to use...

  • Trailer Ramp Springs for a 20 Ton Tandem Axle Trailer
  • That sounds like a very heavy duty trailer. For heavy duty trailers there are special ramp springs, # RS16933RH for right hand side and # RS16933LH for left hand side. They fit a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft or hinge pin. We do not have a pin that large. I have included a link to a video review of the springs for you. The other springs we carry are all lighter duty for enclosed consumer trailers and probably would not be strong enough to fit your 20 ton trailer.

  • Dimensions and Lift Capacity of Ramp Spring # RS16933LH
  • I contacted our representative at Redline about Ramp Spring, part # RS16933LH. He informed me that the overall length of the spring is approximately 10-1/2 Inches and the width of the spring is 3-3/4 Inches. The measurement from each ear to center of spring is about 5-1/4 Inches, and the spring is made to fit over 1-1/2 Inch bar. The metal rod that forms the spring is just under 1/2 Inch in diameter. I used photoshop to show the dimensions of Ramp Spring, part # RS16933LH, (see picture). For...

  • How to Make Raising and Lowering a Heavy Trailer Ramp Easier
  • You wouldn't use a spring like # RS16933LH because it produces 2,000 foot pounds of torque and you would not be able to open the ramp. What I recommend is either the Rack'em Double Barrel tailgate assist, # RA-27C. The Double Barrel will reduce a 134 pound ramp to less than 5 pounds and works in both directions and for ramps up to 200 pounds. I linked a video showing how the Double Barrel installs.

  • Ramp Helper Springs for 100 LB Trailer Ramps
  • It sounds like you are looking for Ramp Springs, # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH. Made of quality steel alloy, these springs provide approximately 90 degrees of deflection and are designed to help lift a ramp with 2,000 pounds of torque.

  • Ramp Spring Weight Capacity and Left or Right Hand Orientation for a Horse Trailer
  • The right hand ramp spring, item # RS16933RH, and the left hand spring, item # RS16933LH, are differentiated by paint on the springs from the manufacturer. The springs with green paint on them are right side springs, left side springs are unpainted. Right side springs will go on the right side of a ramp and left hand springs go on the left side of a ramp. Both right and left hand springs deflect in the same direction the designation of right and left has to do with orientation of the stick...

  • How to Identify Right Versus Left Trailer Ramp Springs
  • The right and left trailer ramp springs # RS16933RH and # RS16933LH will install on the passenger and driver sides of your trailer ramp, respectively. Usually right hand springs will have a painted end for identification while left springs do not.
