Determining Your Load Capacity

A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.

The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.

In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.

Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.

Determining Your Rolling Load Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch, AC Powered

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a brief look together at this Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch. Now, this 120 volt AC-powered winch is compact for use in tight spaces. And this is going to be perfect for indoor or fixed applications. It does have a load capacity of 1,200 pounds, and that rating is based on a 10 foot pull. I do have this plugged in, as you can see, have it plugged into the outlet on the wall behind me.

But this does include a 10 foot long, 3-wire grounded power cord, and the current draw is six amps at 120 volts. And as you might know, electric winches should be used intermittently, the maximum continuous runtime for this winch is four minutes. Now, this does have a mechanical friction break, which is going to lock the reel to hold the load. And let me give you an overhead view real quick here, just so you can see the top of this. Also, I wanna point out that this has a spring-loaded clutch lever that's going to allow you to release the load without power, giving you smooth load control from locked or, as you can see here, it says engaged gears, so that's gonna be the locked position, or free wheel position.

And this is going to automatically return to the locked or engaged position when released. And the free wheel option is going to, of course, allow the cable to be removed by hand. And let me give you another closeup view here and show you the switch. I'm actually gonna try to give you a brief demonstration of how this works. So I'm gonna make sure that that's in the engaged position, and it is.

So as you can see, I'm not able to pull that, that's gonna be locked into place. But if I switch over to free wheel just like that, I'm gonna be able to pull out what I need here. And then I'm just going to then move that into the engaged position again, and so, I can't pull out anymore. And then as you notice here, we do have our switch, and it shows in and out. So when I push out, that's going to allow me to pay out more of the cable.

And then when I press the in button, you can see that's bringing that in. And this is not terribly noisy at all, so you're not gonna have to worry about it being overly loud. I'm gonna pull back in. (winch buzzing) And just like that. So very easy to use, and you're not going to have to worry about anything complicated or anything is gonna be very easy to use. And you just wanna make sure that you have access to a normal 120 volt outlet that you can easily plug this into. I do wanna point out that the cable here is a 7-strand, 19 gauge galvanized aircraft cable. I'm bringing some out there so you can see. And of course, it has this snap hook. And this cable is 20 feet long and 3/16 of an inch in diameter. Of course, this safety snap hook is going to help keep the load securely attached. And just so you know, this wire cable could be swapped out for a two inch wide strap. And this does include an emergency crank handle. This does come standard, so you can use this in the event of a power failure, and you'll just take that cap out and put the crank, engage the crank candle there. And so, very easy operation. The heat-treated gears are gonna give you a smoother, quieter ride and greater strength. The precision needle bearings in high load areas create low friction and promote longer life. The gear ratio is 189:1. The load speed with no load and a full reel is 35 feet per minute, and with a full load and a full reel, 16 feet per minute. And let me see if I can tip this over just to show you the bottom here. We have a die-formed base, and this is adapted for quick mounting applications. I do wanna point out that the measurements of the base hole pattern with diagrams can be found on this product page. This high-impact, weather-resistant case is going to give you excellent protection for the internal components, while at the same time being safer to operate than open reel models. And this brushed stainless steel front plate is gonna give you superior rust resistance. This is made here in the USA. Let me give you some overall measurements. From end to end, we're sitting right at about 11 inches long. The overall width including our lever, about nine inches wide. And then the overall height at the tallest point, about eight inches tall. And just a final note, all Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winches are built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. However, they are not to be used for lifting, supporting, or transporting people, or for handling loads over areas where people could be present. Instructions are also included. And I think that's gonna wrap up our brief look today, I do hope that our time together was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
