A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.
The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.
In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.
Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.
Percent Incline | Multiply By |
---|---|
Level Surface | 10.0 |
5 (3 degrees) | 6.67 |
10 (6 degrees) | 5.02 |
20 (11 degrees) | 3.40 |
30 (17 degrees) | 2.61 |
50 (26 degrees) | 1.86 |
70 (35 degrees) | 1.53 |
100 (45 degrees) | 1.29 |
To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.
The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.
Note: All Dutton-Lainson StrongArm electric winches are built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. They are not to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for handling loads over areas where people could be present.

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. And today we're gonna take a look at this Dutton-Lainson StrongArm electric winch with remote and pulley block. This 120 volt AC powered winch is Canadian Standards Association and OSHA certified. And this is going to work anywhere AC power is available with this 10 foot long 3-wire grounded power cord. It has a, this winch has a load capacity of 2,700 pounds and a double line capacity of 4,000 pounds. And that rating is based on a 10 foot pull.
This electric winch is going to be perfect for indoor or fixed applications. I do want to point out that all Dutton-Lainson's StrongArm electric wenches are built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. However, they are not to be used as hoist for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for handling loads over areas where people could be present. This winch has a dynamic motor brake and a mechanical friction brake. The dynamic brake helps bring the load to an immediate halt without coasting and the mechanical brake locks the reel to hold the load.
The spring-loaded clutch lever allows you to release the load without power. Providing smooth load control from the locked position as I have it now or the free wheel position as it is right now. And as you will notice, this will automatically return to the locked position when released, just like that. And of course that free wheel option's going to allow the cable to be removed by hand. I want to give you an overhead view of this real quick so you can see a better view.
This lever, as you can see, is now in the engaged position. And I'm unable to pull the cable out. But then switching it to the free wheel position, I'm able now to pull that from the spool freely. And then when that springs back into place, then that cable's going to be held and secure, it's not gonna be able to be pulled out. I do also want to plug this in to my outlet here in my studio and go back to a close view here and just give you a brief operation showing you how this works and kind of letting you hear how loud this is as well.
So since I have some of this pulled out already, I'm going to put this in the "in" position as it is right now and then engage the (motor rattles) "run" switch. As you can see that pulls that right back the place. And then putting that, switching that to the "out" position. (motor rattles) And this really isn't too loud. I'm in an enclosed space here and even inside of my studio, it's not too bad. (motor rattles) So then I'm gonna switch this back and bring that in. So, it runs really well and it's going to be very convenient to have this built in. Handheld remote has a 10 foot cord. And again, this is going to allow ease of operation, loading and unloading and runoff functions. This winch has a gear ratio of 570:1 and, in regards to the load speed with no load and a full reel, it's gonna be nine feet per minute and with a full load and a full reel, four feet per minute. Now, this does have a flexible high strength seven strand by 19 gauge galvanized aircraft cable and a pulley block and snap hooks are included for double line pulling. This cable is 50 feet long, making it great for double line operation and the safety snap hook is going to keep the load securely attached. And the wire cable by the way, can be swapped out for a two inch wide strap if you so desire. The cable dimension is 7/32 of an inch in diameter. And again, this is 50 foot long. And as you no doubt know, double line pulling is achieved by taking this hook, what I call the main hook, and hooking it somewhere close to the winch. And then you will pull with this pulley block and snap hook and that's how you obtain that greater pulling rate of 4,000 pounds. An emergency crank handle does come standard with this winch so that you can use this in the event of a power failure. And just to show you here, moving this out of the way, there's a cap right here that you will pull out and that's where you can insert the crank handle if you are in need of it. The heat treated gears are going to give you a smoother, quieter ride and greater strength. The precision needle bearings in high load areas create low friction and promote longer life. And let me give you a view of the bottom here real quick. This has a die-formed base that's adapted for quick mounting applications. Now, on this product page, the base hole pattern measurements and diagrams can be found. So, if you are in need of those measurements, you can find that with a diagram on this product page. Now, this is made here in the USA. The high-impact weather resistant case is going to give you excellent protection for those internal components while at the same time being safer than open reel models. The brushed stainless steel front plate is going to give you superior rust resistance. And the current draw is 7 amps at 120 volts. And electric wenches should be used intermittently; the maximum continuous run time for this winch is four minutes. Now, I took some measurements of this winch before our time together. Looking at the overall length, we are sitting right at about 11 inches long. The overall width, including our clutch lever, we're sitting right at about 9 inches wide. And then the overall height here in the back at the tallest point here, we are sitting right at about 8 inches tall. Instructions are included with this to walk you through a little more in-depth the features that this winch offers. And that is going to conclude our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

This winch includes a 50' cable that increases the load capacity with double-line-pulling capability. Winch works anywhere AC power is available and includes a Load/Unload remote and a spring-loaded clutch for releasing cargo without power.Installed cables. 35A breaker is not insulated and required additional cable to connect to modern battery terminal - so had to buy an insulated breaker. On first use, the small gear on the motor drive shaft fell off because it was installed at the factory without a snap ring. Luckily I found it and fashioned a snap ring for temporary use to load the boat (see picture). Then learned the clutch was set excessively low - would not pull anything close to 1000 pounds. Manual says to not adjust clutch more than 20 degrees, but that would not pull as much as a 2000 lb ratchet strap. I see the other good reviews on this product, but clearly mine was built with some serious QC issues. Hard day on the boat ramp. Grateful for the help and patience of fellow boaters. I am beyond the 60 days to return this product since I bought and installed it over the winter to enjoy this boating season.
Shopped around a lot before I bought this. My boat is heavy (7500 lb) and the wench I had struggled. I took a chance on this as it was rated for the weight. I used the Anderson style connectors and installed a breaker near the battery. Pulled new wire rated for the amp draw. I couldnt be happier! This thing is a beast! Has no prob pulling my boat and cant see that it struggles at all. Highly reccomend. Photo is during installation. I put a cover over it due to my anchor comes close when launching and didnt want it to hit.
The product is great. I replaced a 2001 Strong Arm with this 2024 Strong Arm on my Floe Vertical lift. Having the remote control built in is very nice.
Works good. The cable unravels and creates a little bird nest if it doesn't have tension. A strap would be better, but more prone to breaking I suppose.
Works as it should. Mounted it on vertical pwc lift replacing handwheel. Has pwc up in 30 seconds. Was easy to mount with just two holes. Switch requires some force to operate but not a big deal. Would definitely recommend this for this type of application.
They were exceptionally helpful in deciding which winch to buy. I got this for my pontoon boat on a slide bumper trailer. I wanted to make sure it would have enough power to pull my 24 ft pontoon. This winch is honestly one of the best purchases I have made for this boat. It easily pulls my boat up onto the trailer. Total time to load about 2 mins. I have had many envious looks at my electric winch. Thank you again. For the help in deciding which one to get.
Works great, fit my trail weight boat trailer, with a 24 foot pontoon
I purchased this winch to replace a Fulton K2550 manual winch on my ham radio tower. My tower is 54 ft tall when extended and 21 ft when retracted. It takes about 170 turns of the winch to raise/lower the tower. I removed the hand winch and placed the D-L SA9010AC winch in the existing mounting holes. I like this winch since it comes with a stainless hub since it will be used outside. This winch has a 2700 lb load rating. I am lifting around 700 lbs. This winch comes with no cable or freewheeling clutch. I reused the 1/4" stainless cable on the winch. I raised the tower and it took 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Lowering took 2 minutes. Well within the maximun run time of 3 minutes. The cable length winched was 17 ft. I have raised and lowered the tower several times to work on the antenna's and it worked properly every time. Attached are several pictures of the installation. I already recommended this winch to another ham operator.
Received the winch and all looks good. I ordered a new boat trailer so the winch hasn't been installed yet. Will let you know when it's installed
E-trailer service team, Lauren, was excellent. When my critical delivery delayed she came up with several options to get me a new part on time to support my need.
Put this winch on my Ranger 620 boat trailer a year ago and love it! Haven't had a single problem and it helps trailering when I fish alone. I ran power and ground from my truck battery to a back bumper plug, and have a separate removable cable (shown in pic) to connect truck plug to the winch plug. Grounding to the truck didn't work for me. I have another spare cable and plug rolled up and attached to my trolling motor battery for when my buddies drive. Winch prevents power loading and drawing sand into the motor. DL24055 adapter plate was needed and I put a coupler lock up through the middle of the winch to prevent theft and I bought a cover (shown in pic) to keep the rain out. etrailer sales and support are absolutely fabulous! They helped me figure all this out.
I love the winch for the strap is a great upgrade than the power winch with metal cable which would rust, wire strands would break off, and cut your hands, and the cable would not retrieve back on winch even. The cons I see is the strap has become dried out after use on the end at the hook and it wants to double over on same area. Another concern I have is you have to tighten the clutch knob very hard when retrieving in or it will back off and free spin back out. Just have to wait and see if this becomes a problem in the future.
Works great! The only thing that would make it better is to make the tensioner knob easier to grip when your hands are wet
Absolutely a great product I have used before. The trailer is a great company to deal with.
Easy to install, works great. Moves a 650 lb load with ease. Noah at customer service was very helpful and professional
Just got installed so haven’t been to the lake to try it. I’m hoping it will make it easier to recover my boat when I’m by myself.
I am a 77 year old man and having to hand winch my small sailboat up on a shore ramp that I have. It was getting to be a bit much, so I decided to look into a 12volt winch. The Dl25200 fit the bill, works great. I have a 12volt battery next to it and a 10 , watt solar charger to keep the battery up, I hope. Time will tell. The service at etrailer was great, good price and fast shipping. Thanks
Perfect replacement for my old winch. Took only a few minutes to install.
Order filled and shipped same day! Perfect upon arrival.
To whom it may concern,
The power cable that came with the winch is 4' short. It was mounted on the front of a boat trailer and I have a full size pick up.
Item was shipped extremely fast. Installed it shortly after delivery and all is perfect so far.
Installed this electric winch on an existing DavitMaster davit. Easy install utilizing existing manual winch plate and hardware. Salesperson was very knowledgable and helpful. Very satisfied with product.
nice product
Yes I finished the winch installation, I have not tried at the boat ramp,
however I ran the winch and am very pleased. I am also pleased at the way your company does business. Thank you. George you asked for pictures, please find enclosed pictures.
