Come Up Seal Gen2

The Seal Gen2 recovery winch has all the features of ComeUp's comparable DV series winch - a wire rope, roller fairlead, overheat sensor, Cone Brake Structure, and wired remote - with some serious extras. The winch is sealed to IP68 standards for complete submersion in water or mud. The motor has a faster line speed, the die-cast aluminum rear tie bars are stronger, and the black matte powder coat finish is 3 times more corrosion resistant than the gray powder coat used for the DV series winches.

Heavy-Duty, 5.0-Horsepower Motor

Seal Gen2 Motor

The Seal Gen2 features a 5.0-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 9,500 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. The motor is completely sealed for submersion in mud or water. And it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, carbon steel motor tube, copper battery terminals, and carbon steel hardware.

Integrated Overheat Sensor

There is a built-in sensor located inside the motor housing that monitors the motor temperature. If the motor exceeds 212 degrees, an audible alarm in the power unit sounds and the LED on the remote glows red. The LED and alarm will turn off when the motor has cooled and can be used again.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Seal Gen2 Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP68 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation.

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. The plug prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the wired remote.

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Seal Gen2 Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The Gen2 has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 90-degree increments so you can reposition the clutch handle to an easy-to-reach location. This is great when mounting foot-forward on custom and in-bumper applications or on a vehicle with a small engine where space is extremely limited.

The rustproof, die-cast aluminum gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black matte powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Automatic, Load-Holding Cone Brake Structure

Seal Gen2 Cone Brake

The automatic CBS (Cone Brake Structure) holds 100 percent of the load without unintentional rope payout (or creep). It has a cone-shaped wheel that presses against the brake clamp when there is a load on the rope. The greater the load on the rope the harder the cone-shaped wheel presses against the clamp. This pressure creates enough friction to slow and ultimately stop the drum's rotation.

The cone brake is located on the outside of the drum so the heat created from friction is kept away from the motor and the rope. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Hand-Held Remote with LED

Seal Gen2 Wired Remote

A wired, hand-held remote with a 17' lead and in/out rocker switch is included so you can control your winch from a safe distance. It has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive. Simply plug the waterproof remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

Wire Rope

ComeUp Winch wire rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that resists abrasions and is able to withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a sealed, solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BD500549 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

ComeUp Winch steel hook

The removable steel hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Roller Fairlead

Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. It has a black powder coat finish and zinc-plated rollers that are tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with the included steel hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate that bolts to your bumper (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). ComeUp mounting channels and most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

The Seal Gen2 winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that perform no matter the weather conditions or terrain. The die-cast aluminum motor and gearbox housing, the steel drum housing, the power unit and contactor, and the remote are sealed to IP68 standards. This means that the winch can be continuously submerged in 3' of water or mud and remain fully operational. The power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight aluminum and plastic, and the hardware is made of corrosion-resistant carbon steel. The thick, steel side frame drum supports and die-cast aluminum rear tie bars help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal mounting plate (sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

When you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (CU881076 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer9,50016-11/16
2nd Layer7,65538-1/8
3rd Layer6,41064-1/2
4th Layer5,514100

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 9,500-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 6,333 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface95,000
5 (3°)63,365
10 (6°)47,690
20 (11°)32,300
30 (17°)24,795
50 (26°)17,670
70 (35°)14,535
100 (45°)12,255
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (CU881082 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (CU881091 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (CU881092 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use an 8-piece rigging kit (CU881662 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for ComeUp Electric Winch - Truck Winch - CU295985 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 9.5 Recovery Winch. The Seal series winch is going to feature a 9,500 pound line pulling capacity. This winch is designed as a high performance self-recovery winch. It's going to feature a five horsepower, twelve volts series round motor. It is submersible capable. It's going to feature a fully sealed transmission system with extreme-duty water resistance and automatic full load Cone Brake Structure.

That's CBS. That stands for Cone Brake Structure, brake outside the drum. That allows for rapid heat dispersion. The braking system is going to automatically endure the full load without slipping, so the greater the load on the wire rope, the greater the amount of braking that's generated by the mechanism. It's also going to come with an industrial-grade, waterproof remote control, that's going to come with a thermometric LED indicator, so that's going to automatically alert the user when the motor is overheating. That cord is going to measure seventeen feet long.

The port plugs into the port here at the top of the contactor. Easy connection, allows for quick and easy connection, and then you can use that dust cap to cover up those connection points when the plug or the cord's not being used to remote. The seventeen foot length is really going to allow you to stand a safe distance away from the winch during operation. The winch is going to feature a rugged and quiet three-stage planetary gear train, which is going to offer maximum mechanical advantage and efficiency. The gear ratio on this system is 159 to 1. It's going to feature the ergonomic T-handle that's going to positively engage the free-spool clutch through multiple evenly spaced locking holes.

The clutch can be rotated to re-position the T-handle in multiple locations, easing accessibility in various winch mounting positions. The T-handle has two positions to choose from. You can have it in the engaged position, which is the position shown. That's going to allow for winching, so you would be able to bring your line in, extend your line out, or you can move this to the disengage position by lifting it up and rotating, and that's going to allow the winch to go into a free-spool mode, which would allow you to grab the rope and extend it out to where you need it very quickly and easily. All your hardware is included, as well as the wiring. The two larger bolts right here as well as all the other hardware that I have on the bolts, those are going to be used to mount the roller fairlead.

Your fairlead is included. The fairlead has these rollers on it, so it's designed to protect the wire rope, and it's going to help the wire rope re-spool correctly as you bring the line back in from having it extended. The hardware for the roller fairlead is included, and then you're going to have these four pieces of hardware. That hardware is used to actually mount the winch. The winch is going to have four mounting slots on the underside. Then you're going to have these two sets of hardware. Those are going to be optional mounting possibilities for the contactor. The contactor is going to feature three mounting possibilities. Possibility number one or option number one is to use the braces that it comes with, to mount to the motor housing, which is how I have it set up today. Option number two would be to use a set of hardware and mount the feet to the mounting surface. Option number three would be to use that thinner set of hardware and use the mounting slots here on the back side to mount the contactor that way. You can see that all the hardware, or excuse me, most of the wiring is already pre-installed into the contactor. All the ends are going to have color coding as well as labels. This one says F2, this one says F1, this one says A. It makes it very easy to make sure you're getting the correct wires attached to the correct posts here on the motor housing. Everything's going to be ready and set to go. When it comes to the initial set up, we're looking at a pretty easy set up. It's got your battery leads; right here is the negative battery lead, and then the red or positive is already connected to the contactor. Plenty of length to work with to make sure that you can get it connected to your battery and then still get the winch mounted to where you need it or to the location that is going to best fit your application. It's a really nice design. The winch is going to feature aluminium die-cast housings with steel drum construction. The drum size is going to measure 8.9 inches wide. It's going to give us a diameter of two and a half inches. The cable on the unit is a galvanized aircraft wire rope. It's 87 by 19. That's going to measure 1130 seconds of an inch in diameter by 100 feet long, and it's going to come with the hook that has a safety latch on it to prevent accidental disconnecting. That's a forged steel hook, three-eighths inch diameter, and it's got the hand saver strap that comes with it as well. Again, the roller fairlead's included. The fairlead does not mount directly to the winch, it typically mounts to the winch mounting plate. This winch does not include a winch mounting plate, so just keep that in mind when thinking of a mounting option. Some vehicles allow you to mount directly to the bumper. You can purchase a winch mounting plate, and all that information is located in the instructions. The bolt pattern on the unit, if I can flip this back real quick for you, you can see the underside of the unit, it's going to have four mounting holes. Two up front, two in the back, the distance center on center go in this direction between the mounting holes. It's going to measure ten inches from front to back. Center on center those holes are going to be separated by four and a half inches. The weight of the winch, including the wire rope installed, it's going to be about 85 pounds. A nice, heavy-duty winch. The line speed of the unit, with no load, is going to be 62 feet per minute. The line speed with a max load of 9500 pounds on the line is going to be 6.8 feet per minute. With one layer of rope on the drum, which is 19.1 feet, the winch has a pulling capacity of 9,500 pounds, with four layers of wire rope on the drum, which is 100 feet, the winch is going to have a pulling capacity of 5,514 pounds. When it comes to some of the measurements, if we take a look at the overall width, measuring from edge to edge, these are going to be just estimated measurements. We're looking at about 24 inches. From front to back, here at the widest point, we're looking at about six and a half inches. The overall height, if we take a measurement from the bottom to the top of the T-handle, that's going to give a measurement of about eight and one quarter of an inch. That's not including the contactor installed, because there are other options to get that mounted. That's going to do it for today's look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 9.5 Recovery Winch.

I could not be happier with this purchase. The price was unbeatable, and I received the winch much quicker than I anticipated considering the shipping was free. It actually wound up sitting in my garage for several weeks while I performed some other modifications to my FJ Cruiser that had to be completed prior to installing the winch. After finally getting everything prepared to handle the addition of the winch, I got it installed this past weekend. It fits perfectly in my after-market bumper and will give me considerable peace of mind in my future off-road adventures. Excellent service and a great product. I will definitely be looking to etrailer.com for future purchases. 314874
