Come Up Seal Gen2

The Seal Gen2 recovery winch has all the features of ComeUp's comparable DV series winch - a synthetic rope, hawse fairlead, overheat sensor, Cone Brake Structure, and wired remote - with some serious extras. The winch is sealed to IP68 standards for complete submersion in water or mud. It includes a wireless, waterproof remote with an integrated LED overheat indicator. The motor has a faster line speed, the die-cast aluminum rear tie bars are stronger, and the black matte powder coat finish is 3 times more corrosion resistant than the gray powder coat used for the DV series winches.

Heavy-Duty, 5.0-Horsepower Motor

Seal Gen2 Motor

The Seal Gen2 features a 5.0-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,500 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. The motor is completely sealed for submersion in mud or water. And it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, carbon steel motor tube, copper battery terminals, and carbon steel hardware.

Integrated Overheat Sensor

There is a built-in sensor located inside the motor housing that monitors the motor temperature. If the motor exceeds 212 degrees, an audible alarm in the power unit sounds and the LED on the remote glows red. The LED and alarm will turn off when the motor has cooled and can be used again.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Seal Gen2 Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP68 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation.

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. The plug prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the wired remote.

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Seal Gen2 Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The Gen2 has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 90-degree increments so you can reposition the clutch handle to an easy-to-reach location. This is great when mounting foot-forward on custom and in-bumper applications or on a vehicle with a small engine where space is extremely limited.

The rustproof, die-cast aluminum gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black matte powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Automatic, Load-Holding Cone Brake Structure

Seal Gen2 Cone Brake

The automatic CBS (Cone Brake Structure) holds 100 percent of the load without unintentional rope payout (or creep). It has a cone-shaped wheel that presses against the brake clamp when there is a load on the rope. The greater the load on the rope the harder the cone-shaped wheel presses against the clamp. This pressure creates enough friction to slow and ultimately stop the drum's rotation.

The cone brake is located on the outside of the drum so the heat created from friction is kept away from the motor and the rope. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Wireless, Waterproof Remote

Seal Gen2 Wireless Remote

The Seal Gen2 includes a wireless remote that lets you operate the winch from up to 90' away. The remote has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive. It has a 2-way digital signal that transmits at 2.4 GHz to prevent in-band interference.

Seal Gen2 Wired Remote

A wired, hand-held remote with a 17' lead and in/out rocker switch is also included so you can control your winch if you lose the wireless remote or the battery dies. It has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive. Simply plug the waterproof remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

Synthetic Rope

Come Up Synthetic Rope

The synthetic rope is made of 12-strand Dyneema SK75 fiber that is lightweight yet stronger than steel. This synthetic rope is safer to use than a steel rope because it generates less kinetic energy - and therefore less kickback - if a break occurs. It won't stretch - or creep - over time like steel rope can. And it's also less likely to fray and create sharp strands so it's easier to handle and easier to spool.

The rope winds around a sealed, solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A 6', woven-polyester protective sleeve at the hook end of the rope provides extra protection for your hands. A hand-saver strap is also included to use in conjunction with leather work gloves (CU881558 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook.

Red Hook

The removable red hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to a steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Aluminum Hawse Fairlead

Come Up Hawse Fairlead

The cast aluminum hawse fairlead is designed to be used with synthetic rope. The 11/16" thick fairlead has a black powder coat finish that resists corrosion, and it installs with stainless steel hardware. The fairlead hole is rounded to reduce friction on the rope when you're pulling it in and out. This helps reduce wear on the rope and keep it strong and functional.

Note: The hawse fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). ComeUp mounting channels and most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

The Seal Gen2 winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that perform no matter the weather conditions or terrain. The die-cast aluminum motor and gearbox housing, the contactor, and both remotes are sealed to IP68 standards. This means that the winch can be continuously submerged in 3' of water or mud and remain fully operational. The power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight aluminum and plastic, and the hardware is made of corrosion-resistant carbon steel. The thick, steel side frame drum supports and die-cast aluminum rear tie bars help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

Note: This winch can only be installed foot-forward.

When you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (CU881076 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,50016
2nd Layer9,91936
3rd Layer8,22161
4th Layer7,02082

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,500-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,333 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface125,000
5 (3°)83,375
10 (6°)62,750
20 (11°)42,500
30 (17°)32,625
50 (26°)23,250
70 (35°)19,125
100 (45°)16,125
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (CU881082 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (CU881091 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (CU881092 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use an 8-piece rigging kit (CU881662 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 12.5rs Recovery Winch. This Seal Series Winch has a 12,500-pound line pulling capacity. It is designed for foot forward mounting only. That's with the mounting points facing forward. This is designed as a high-performance self-recovery winch. It's going to feature a 5-horsepower 12-volt series wound motor.

It's also going to feature a free-spooling clutch with a rotating ring gear. Clutch system is on this side of the winch. It's going to feature 4 equally positioned pinholes with stainless steel, ergonomic T-handle right here on top. Those pinholes make it possible to reposition the clutch. That way, you can reposition the clutch handle. Depending on your mounting location or mounting application, you can reposition the clutch handle at a convenient spot that's convenient to access and to pull out to the engaged or disengaged position as necessary.

The T-handle, again, is made from a stainless steel construction. It's got an ergonomic design. The T-handle is going to feature 2 positions. Right now, it's in the engaged position, which would mean that it's ready for winching. Pull it up and rotate it, and that would move it to a disengaged position which allows the winch to go into a free-spool mode so you can grab the hand saver strap and extend the line out as needed. When it comes to operating the winch, you're going to have a couple of options.

It comes with 2 remotes. You're going to have a waterproof remote control with thermometric LED indicators that's going to aware you if the winch is overheating. That's going to be attached to a 17' cord. The plug plugs into the port here at the top of the contactor, and it's got the nice little dust cap on it so it protects the connection points when the remote is not connected to it. It's also going to have a wireless remote system.

This is going to have a 90' radius. The receiver is built into the contactor. It's going to have the LED indicator on it as well which is going to notify the user of the motor overheating. The brake system on this winch is a mechanical cone brake. It's designed to hold the full load automatically. It's a CBS system which stands for Cone Brake Structure. It's mounted outside the drum, and that really helps expedite heat dispersion which is ideal for a synthetic rope design which this winch has. The gear system on this is a 3-stage planetary gear train. It's going to have a gear ratio of 225 to 1. When it comes to the construction of the housing is we're looking at an aluminum construction. It's going to have a steel drum. The winch is also going to feature a really nice, matte black powder coat finish, so it's going to add a really nice, sleek, clean look to the winch, and it's going to protect it from rust and corrosion, making sure that it looks great for many years to come. The rope, again, is a synthetic rope. It's SK75, SK-75 synthetic. It's going to have a rope diameter of 7/16" and it's going to measure 82' long. On the end of it, it's got a nice, heavy-duty, steel hook with a safety latch mechanism to prevent accidental disconnecting. It's also going to come with the hand saver strap. This right here is going to be your aluminum Hawse Fairlead that's going to protect the synthetic rope. It runs through this area here. That way, it really reduces the chance of abrasions or cuts to the rope. It's simply designed to protect it as you extend the line out or as you bring the line back in. Now the mounting bolt pattern on the unit, it's going to feature 4 bolt holes. Center on center, the distance from this one to this one is going to measure 10", and then up and down, they're going to be separated on center by 4-1/2". The overall weight of the winch including the synthetic rope, with it installed, is going to be 61.7 pounds. The winch does include all necessary hardware and wiring for a complete installation. This wire right here is going to be your battery lead 00:03:57 for your negative connection, and then all the other wires are connected here at the back of the contactor, which you'll see in a moment when I show you the mounting options for the contactor. When it comes to the hardware, these 4 pieces of hardware right here are for mounting the actual winch. These 2 are for the aluminum Hawse Fairlead. Then these 4, these 2 are going to be different-sized than these 2, but these 4 are going to provide a couple of different options when it comes to mounting the contactor. It's going to come with these metal braces. That way, you can mount it directly to the motor housing like I have right now. The other option is that here on the feet of the contactor, there's 2 holes. You can mount it that way with the included hardware. Or, on the back of the contactor, there's going to be 2 slots or grooves. You can see those right there. You can use the other set of hardware to mount it with those grooves. You can see all the wiring that's connected to the contactor. You got the posts here on the housing of the motor. That's where the other ends of these wires connect. We got a ground wire. Everything is labeled and color-coded. That way, the initial setup is very simple, it's very quick, and very easy to do so. The unit also comes with an owner's manual and instructions to help with that whole process. Now when it comes to the capacity, this is rated with a pulling capacity of 12,500 pounds. That's with the first layer of rope on the drum. It's 17.7' of rope on the drum, capacity is 12,500 pounds. On the fourth layer which would be 82' of rope on the drum, the winch can pull 7,020 pounds. With no load on the winch or on the rope, it's going to have a line speed of 25.3' per minute with a 45 amp draw at 12 volts. With full load on the rope, 12,500 pounds, then the winch has a line speed of 3' per minute with a 470 amp draw at 12 volts. When it comes to the dimensions of the winch, from edge to edge, we're looking at a measurement of about 24-1/2". From front to back, we're looking at a measurement of about 7-1/2". Then from bottom to top right here at the T-handle, we're looking at a measurement of about 8" tall. That measurement does not include the contactor because there are other ways to mount the contactor if this way doesn't work out for you. Again, overall, the Seal Series is a nice, dependable, strong, durable winch, and again, it is for foot forward mounting only. That's going to do it for today's look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 12.5rs Recovery Winch.

Review from a similar Seal Gen2 Series in Electric Winch

I have used it several times 4 wheeling and it has worked like intended. Easy to operate, and installation was simple. I have it installed on a 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD OffRoad with an aftermarket steel bumper. This winch model came without the remote control and I recently bought the add-on remote so I don't have to use the wired controller. It has got me unstuck several times in deep snow and mud, pulled my buddy out of trouble, and even used it to move a down large tree out of the way on a trail. I did have to replace the car battery as the original stock battery of the Tacoma did not have the recommended Amps to operate the winch.
One thing lacking in the instructions and installation manual is recommendations on a fuse.
Overall the winch has worked great and I have not had any issues with it.

I reached out to the manufacturer and they recommended a fuse that is designed for high current circuit protection up to 250 amps. Something that is ideal for battery and alternator protection application and other heavy gauge cables requiring ultra-high current protection.

Review from a similar Seal Gen2 Series in Electric Winch

Received the winch.... it was well packaged and arrived without damage. Install went smoothly as instructions are clear and make sense.

Havent had a chance to test it in the field yet but i have spooled it out and back in. The remote works great and the motor is quiet and fast.

Review from a similar Seal Gen2 Series in Electric Winch

I could not be happier with this purchase. The price was unbeatable, and I received the winch much quicker than I anticipated considering the shipping was free. It actually wound up sitting in my garage for several weeks while I performed some other modifications to my FJ Cruiser that had to be completed prior to installing the winch.

After finally getting everything prepared to handle the addition of the winch, I got it installed this past weekend. It fits perfectly in my after-market bumper and will give me considerable peace of mind in my future off-road adventures.

Excellent service and a great product. I will definitely be looking to for future purchases.

Review from a similar Seal Gen2 Series in Electric Winch

Been using and abusing the sealed 9.5 gen2 for a year now in a 5,000lb (loaded) 4runner with dual batteries. Has dozens of pulls on it now, between uprighting rigs, pulling 1 ton box Van's out of ditches, and yanking my own rig off rocks and out of beaver ponds. Its been extremely reliable, the all metal clutch lever is very easy and ergonomic to use. Having the red/green LEDs on the controller for a temp indicator is great when you've been working it hard with repeated pulls. No complaints, and I'm pretty picky.
