Come Up Seal Gen2

The Seal Gen2 recovery winch has all the features of ComeUp's comparable DV series winch - a wire rope, roller fairlead, overheat sensor, Cone Brake Structure, and wired remote - with some serious extras. The winch is sealed to IP68 standards for complete submersion in water or mud. The motor has a faster line speed, the die-cast aluminum rear tie bars are stronger, and the black matte powder coat finish is 3 times more corrosion resistant than the gray powder coat used for the DV series winches.

Heavy-Duty, 5.0-Horsepower Motor

Seal Gen2 Motor

The Seal Gen2 features a 5.0-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,500 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. The motor is completely sealed for submersion in mud or water. And it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, carbon steel motor tube, copper battery terminals, and carbon steel hardware.

Integrated Overheat Sensor

There is a built-in sensor located inside the motor housing that monitors the motor temperature. If the motor exceeds 212 degrees, an audible alarm in the power unit sounds and the LED on the remote glows red. The LED and alarm will turn off when the motor has cooled and can be used again.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Seal Gen2 Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP68 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation.

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. The plug prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the wired remote.

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Seal Gen2 Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The Gen2 has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 90-degree increments so you can reposition the clutch handle to an easy-to-reach location. This is great when mounting foot-forward on custom and in-bumper applications or on a vehicle with a small engine where space is extremely limited.

The rustproof, die-cast aluminum gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black matte powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Automatic, Load-Holding Cone Brake Structure

Seal Gen2 Cone Brake

The automatic CBS (Cone Brake Structure) holds 100 percent of the load without unintentional rope payout (or creep). It has a cone-shaped wheel that presses against the brake clamp when there is a load on the rope. The greater the load on the rope the harder the cone-shaped wheel presses against the clamp. This pressure creates enough friction to slow and ultimately stop the drum's rotation.

The cone brake is located on the outside of the drum so the heat created from friction is kept away from the motor and the rope. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Hand-Held Remote with LED

Seal Gen2 Wired Remote

A wired, hand-held remote with a 17' lead and in/out rocker switch is included so you can control your winch from a safe distance. It has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive. Simply plug the waterproof remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

Wire Rope

ComeUp Winch wire rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that resists abrasions and is able to withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a sealed, solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BD500549 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

ComeUp Winch steel hook

The removable steel hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Roller Fairlead

Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. It has a black powder coat finish and zinc-plated rollers that are tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with the included steel hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate that bolts to your bumper (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). ComeUp mounting channels and most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

The Seal Gen2 winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that perform no matter the weather conditions or terrain. The die-cast aluminum motor and gearbox housing, the steel drum housing, the power unit and contactor, and the remote are sealed to IP68 standards. This means that the winch can be continuously submerged in 3' of water or mud and remain fully operational. The power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight aluminum and plastic, and the hardware is made of corrosion-resistant carbon steel. The thick, steel side frame drum supports and die-cast aluminum rear tie bars help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

Note: This winch can only be installed foot-forward.

When you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (CU881076 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,50016
2nd Layer9,91936
3rd Layer8,22161
4th Layer7,02082

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,500-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,333 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

50 (26)23,250
70 (35)19,125
100 (45)16,125
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (CU881082 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (CU881091 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (CU881092 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use an 8-piece rigging kit (CU881662 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for ComeUp Electric Winch - Truck Winch - CU295745 Review

Today we are going to be taking a look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 12.5 recovery winch. This seal series winch has a 12,500 pound line pulling capacity. This is designed for forward mounting only, that's with the mounting holes facing forward. This is a high performance self-recovery winch. It's going to feature a 5 Hp 12 volt series wound motor. It's also going to feature a free-spooling clutch with rotating ring gear. On this side of the winch, we're going to notice a stainless steel T-handle.

It's got a nice ergonomic design. It's going to have two positions. You're going to have the engaged position, which means that it's ready for winching, or you can lift it up and rotate it, and that's going to move it to a disengage position, meaning that it allows the winch to go into a free-spool mode so you can grab the wire rope and you can extend it out to where you need it quickly and easily. Over here on this side, it's also going to have equally positioned pin holes that makes it possible to re-position the clutch handle to best fit your particular mounting application and to keep the handle easily accessible. It's going to come with a waterproof remote. It's going to have a 17-foot cord so you can operate the winch from a safe distance.

It's got a wrist strap on there so you can get a secure grip when you're using it. It's also going to feature thermometric LED indicators. That's going to notify the user when the winch is overheating. The winch is going to feature an automatic full-load cone brake structure design to hold the full load without slipping. The CBS system is mounted outside the drum. The greater the load on the rope, the greater amount of braking that is generated by the mechanism, so that's a really nice design to have.

The gear system on the unit is a three-stage planetary gear train. It's going to feature a gear ratio of 225:1. The winch is going to feature a matte black powder coat finish for rust and corrosion protection, as well as a nice clean rugged look. The cable on the unit is an 87 x 19 wire rope. It's going to measure 3/8ths of an inch in diameter by 82 feet long. It's also going to come with a heavy-duty steel hook, and it's got the hand-saver strap, but the steel hook is a forged steel construction, a nice strong durable design.

It's going to have the spring-loaded safety latch mechanism to prevent accidental disconnecting, so that simply attaches to the end of the wire rope. The pin and the clip to get that installed is included as well. This unit right here, this is going to be the roller fairlead, so that's included. That's really going to help protect the wire rope as you extend it out and as you bring it back into the winch. The mounting bolt pattern on the unit, you can see that it has four mounting holes. Center on center, the distance between these holes going across is going to measure 10 inches. Up and down center on center, the holes are going to be separated by 4-1/2 inches. The overall weight of the winch including the wire rope is going to be around 76 pounds. The winch includes all necessary hardware and wiring for a complete installation. You can see up front, we have all the hardware laid out. These two pieces are designed to mount the roller fairlead. These four pieces are the mounting hardware for the actual winch, and then you are going to have two sets right here. These are going to be possible options to mount the contactor, so the contactor can mount in three different ways. You can mount it to the motor housing using the included metal braces like I have it mounted today, or you can use this set of hardware to mount it to a solid surface. In the bottom of the feet on the contactor are going to be holes so you can use the hardware to mount it that way, or here on the back side, it's going to feature two slots, so you can see right here, we have two slots, and you can use the smaller set of hardware to get the contactor mounted that way as well. On top of the contactor, we are going to have a port that is to plug in the remote, so it's very easy to connect it. You simply just plug this into this portion right here, and then you're ready to use the remote to bring the line in or extend it out, and it's got the dust cap to protect those connection points when the cord is not plugged in. You can see all the motor housing. We have all the studs to make the connections. It's a really easy design, the wiring that's all connected to the contactor, that's all going to be labeled and color-coded, so it makes the initial set-up very quick and easy. We are going to have rubber boots over the connection points to protect the posts, as well as the ring terminals on the cables. This right here is going to be another battery lead. The battery leads are pretty long, your red and black wires, so that really helps make the connection easier and giving you enough length to get the winch mounted where you needed at the front of the vehicle, or it may vary depending on your application, but typically these are going to be around 6 feet long. Now with 17.7 feet of wire rope on the drum, that's going to be the first layer. The winch is rated at 12,500 pounds. The fourth layer, which is going to be 82 feet of wire rope on the drum, the winch can pull in 7,020 pounds. With no load on the winch, it's going to feature a line speed of 25.3 feet per minute with a 45 amp draw at 12 volts, and then with max load at 12,500 pounds on the winch, it's going to have a line speed of 3 feet per minute with an amp draw of 470 amps at 12 volts. When it comes to the measurements of the winch, measuring from edge to edge, we are looking at about 24-1/2 inches, from front to back, we are looking at about 7-1/2 inches, and then from bottom to the top of the T-handle right here, we are looking at about 8 inches tall. That's going to do it for today's look at the ComeUp Seal Gen2 12.5 recovery winch.

Review from a similar Seal Gen2 Series in Electric Winch

I could not be happier with this purchase. The price was unbeatable, and I received the winch much quicker than I anticipated considering the shipping was free. It actually wound up sitting in my garage for several weeks while I performed some other modifications to my FJ Cruiser that had to be completed prior to installing the winch. After finally getting everything prepared to handle the addition of the winch, I got it installed this past weekend. It fits perfectly in my after-market bumper and will give me considerable peace of mind in my future off-road adventures. Excellent service and a great product. I will definitely be looking to etrailer.com for future purchases. 314874
