Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the bulldog winch heavy duty series off-road winch with the wire rope, the roller fairlead and an 18,500 pound weight capacity. Now this heavy duty winch will let you recover a stuck vehicle, helps you move boulders or logs, or pull a large vehicle onto a trailer. So this is perfect for fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, and other work trucks and commercial vehicles. This is designed for winching vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of 12,500 pounds. Now, right over here on this side, they use a 5.6 horsepower series wound motor, which will deliver powerful and safe line pulling. This motor is more powerful, more efficient and produces more torque than a permanent magnet motor.
Also it has drain holes that'll let water and vapor escape to prevent internal moisture buildup. This does use an automatic ratcheting pole brake, which will hold a hundred percent of the load. The engaged pole will prevent the drum from spinning in reverse so a heavy load doesn't unintentionally pay out. Now on top of the motor right here is the power unit. This will include the contactor, it's in a plastic housing, includes all the wiring.
And let me go take this a little bit, just so you can see there's your wiring for your connection to your battery. That's all connected up there to the contactor. Now they do also offer a. We do sell a wiring kit separately, sell that separately on our website, and that'll let you remotely mount this power unit. If you prefer it not being on top of your motor, you can actually remotely mount this somewhere with that wiring kit that we do sell separately. Now in this power unit, it has a sealed 500 amp contactor, which will transmit power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor.
It is water and weather resistant to IP67 specifications. Also, if you notice this includes this nice rubber handheld remote with a 12 foot lead, that'll let you operate the winch from a nice, safe distance. The switch on it, the toggle switch, for the in and out feature that is a weather resistant switch, nice rubber coating on it powers the load in and out.And basically when you go to hook this up, you just take your cable right here, pop open this, let me turn this a little bit, pop open your cover here and then there's your connection. You just line the notch up, push it in, and then thread your collar right on there. And have a whole new connection there, and you're all ready to go.
You can use this remote to operate it. If you're not using the remote, just unscrew that collar, unplug it, and then put your dust cover right back on there. Now they do offer a wireless remote control. We do sell that separately on our website that is available. Now this does use an all steels four stage planetary gear train right over here. The gear ratio is 505 to one. This will provide increased drum speed when compared with one drives in one, two or three stage planetary gear trains. It does offer a free spooling clutch, which will ensure a nice fast rope payout reduces wear on the motor. This is the clutch handle right up here. It's pointing this way so it's in the engaged position. So you can operate with your remote and your windshield go in and out. If you turn it this way, it'll be disengaged, which means you can pull out as much wire rope as you need. Once you get out as much as you need, then just flip it back into engage position, and then you can operate it with your remote. The other nice feature on this gear box, it can be rotated 360 degrees so that you can reach the clutch handle no matter where you mount the winch. So basically if you just loosened a few screws here, you can rotate this gear. If you want your clutch handle up front, just turn it that way, tighten it back down, if you want it in the back, same way allows you to adjust it 360 degrees. The rope on it it's a half inch diameter zinc-plated wire rope. It's strong and abrasion resistant. It is 85 feet long. It is aircraft grade galvanized steel. It does have a, on the end here you can see, this half-inch zinc-plated steel hook with the keeper on it. And it even includes this nice nylon hand saver strap. Now this roller fairlead right here, it's a steel roller fairlead has a nice thick frame on it, has four rollers, two horizontally and then two vertically helps reduce friction and wear on the wire rope and it has a nice silver zinc-plated finish to resist corrosion. Now this is all in a nice heavy duty steel housing has the nice thick side frames and tie bars, which create a nice strong winch body. They do have a black powder coat finish on them which is corrosion resistant. And the motor tube on this winch is a dacromet plated motor tube to help resist internal corrosion. I want to give you a few specs and then we'll give you some measurements. Specs on this, the rated line pull with a single layer of wire rope around the drum is 18,500 pounds static load. We had mentioned the vehicle recovery capacity is 12,500 pounds. The motor is a 12 volt DC motor. The line pull at zero pounds, power draw will be 50 amps, line speed is 18 feet per minute. The line pull at 18,500 pounds, power draw will be 355 amps and the line speed is 3.2 feet per minute. I mentioned the battery wires here in the back. These are a wire size of two gauge and the lead length is about six feet on the cable. Now I do want to give you a few dimensions on this, the length, get our tape measure out, the length from this end to this end is going to be right at 27 and three quarter inches long. Overall height is right at 12 and a half inches tall. And the width on this is going to be right at about 10 and a half inches wide. Now the weight on this with the synthetic or with the wire rope installed is 187 pounds. So it is a very heavy winch, but it is also very heavy duty winch holds up really well, has very nice features on it. Does come with the mounting hardware and a nice set of instructions and owner's manual to describe all your connections and how it operates. But that should do it for the review on this bulldog winch heavy duty series off-road winch with the wire rope, the roller fairlead and an 18,500 pound weight capacity..
