Bulldog Winch ATV Series

This Powersports ATV recovery winch is designed for light-duty work and recreational applications. It's perfect for your 350cc - 500cc sport quad or small utility quad 4x4 with a maximum GVW of 1,500 lbs. It includes a handlebar-mounted rocker switch so you can control the winch from the seat of your ATV. The motor, gearbox, and contactor are sealed so you can confidently run your ATV through mud and water. And it includes a dynamic brake, a wire rope and roller fairlead, and a universal mounting channel for installation.

Light-Duty, 1.2-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch ATV Motor

This winch features a 1.2-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 3,000 lbs of line pull. The permanent magnet motor offers the same line-pulling power and speed as a series-wound motor of comparable size, but it's lighter and uses less current. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Relay Switch

Bulldog Winch Relay Switch

The power unit contains 60- and 80-amp relay switches that transmit power from the ATV's battery to the winch motor. It has 18" leads that run to the vehicle's battery, 6' leads that run to the winch motor, and 12" leads with quick connects for the handlebar-mounted rocker switch. It will typically be mounted with included hardware under the ATV's front cover or hood near the battery.

Bulldog Winch Relay Switch

The power unit has a weather-resistant seal between the lid and base and rubber seals where the wires enter the box. Both relay switches have an electronic assembly that has been filled with an epoxy pour to create a waterproof seal.

Free-Spooling Clutch

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to power out the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull out the hard plastic knob and rotate it 90 degrees so that the pins on the shaft rest against the catch. To reengage the clutch, rotate the knob 90 degrees and push it back in.

The clutch is driven by a single-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives.

Dynamic Brake

The dynamic brake uses resistance from the winch motor to control line speed. When the winch is pulling the rope in there is no resistance on the drum. As you start to slow the pull with the rocker switch the motor slows the drum's rotation. When the power is stopped the drum does not turn and the load is held in place.

Since there is no physical brake device the winch is lighter and has a smaller profile than winches with a mechanical braking system. This makes it easier to mount in places with limited space available.

Handlebar-Mounted Rocker Switch

Bulldog Winch Handlbar Mounted Shifter

The handlebar-mounted rocker switch lets you operate the winch from the seat of your ATV. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss with quick connects.

There is also a wireless remote kit (BDW20099 - sold separately) that lets you control the winch from up to 100' away.

Wire Rope

Bulldog Winch Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is also recommended for added protection. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back if it breaks by forcing it to the ground.

Bulldog Winch Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically mounts to the included channel or to tabs on a custom mounting plate (sold separately). Bulldog Winch mounting plates - as well as most other aftermarket mounts - include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Bulldog Winch Winch Body

The winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel.

Installation

Bulldog Winch Mounting channel

To install the winch on the front of your vehicle you will need a suitable mounting location. The winch and fairlead may be bolted to the included mounting channel. This mounting channel is a basic L-channel and may not be compatible with your ATV. In most cases you will need to bolt a custom mounting plate (sold separately) to the front framework of your ATV in order to mount the winch and fairlead.

Bulldog Winch relay switch

The power unit will typically mount under the front cover or hood near the battery. You will need to drill 2 small holes in the mounting surface to secure the unit with the included hardware. Connect the 18" leads to your vehicle's battery and run the 6' leads to the winch terminals. Any excess wiring can be neatly tucked around the engine and secured with zip ties (not included).

Bulldog Winch handlebar mounted rocker switch

You can mount the rocker switch on either handlebar but it's typically mounted near the brake on the handlebar opposite the throttle. This allows you to control the winch and accelerate the ATV at the same time. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss that connects to the contactor with built-in quick connects.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer3,0005-3/16
2nd Layer2,32012
3rd Layer1,89019-5/8
4th Layer1,59029-1/2
5th Layer1,38040

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20023 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (BDW20051 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20006 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 7-piece rigging kit (BDW20034 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - ATV - UTV Winch - BDW15002 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number BDW15002, this is the Bulldog ATV winch, rated at 3,000 pounds. This is going to come with the universal mounting bracket, the winch, you're going to get the four way roller fair lead, solenoid, rocker switch that mounts to your handle bars so you can control the winch from the seat of your ATV. This is going to come with that mounting bracket, all the wiring, the hook with the hand lead right there, and all the necessary hardware is included for a complete installation. You're going to get a detailed owners manual, it's going to walk you through the installation, maintenance, safety, everything you need to know regarding the use and operation and the ownership of a ATV winch. This is going to offer a 1.2 horsepower permanent magnet motor, it's going to deliver a nice quick, safe line pull. It's going to offer planetary year train 00:00:55. Again you're going to get the handle bar mounted rocker switch that's going to winch from the seat of your ATV, mounting bracket and hardware is all included.

Now here on the side of the winch, this knob right here, this is going to be your free spool clutch knob, this is going to insure fast cable pay out. You pull it out and rotate it, that's going to allow the winch to go into free spool mode. And then you rotate it, push it back in, that's going to lock it in place, and then you're ready to operate it with the rocker switch. Now the cable on this is going to measure 3/16 of an inch in diameter, it's strong and durable, it's going to measure 40 feet in total length. Again, it's going to include the hook right here, this is going to have a quarter of an inch shackle diameter on it. I believe that's what it says, for steel construction, quarter of an inch stamp right there.

You're going to get the safety latch on that hook right there, its going to prevent accidental disconnecting. And you're also going to get the hand saver strap. Now this right here, this is going to be the four way roller fair lead. This is going to protect the wire rope from damage by reducing the amount of strain and rubbing on the actual cable, so that's great to have. Nice smooth, easy operation. I went ahead and attached that to the universal mounting bracket so that way you could get an idea of how its going to look.

But the universal mounting bracket is this platform, and it's got a 2 and 1/2 inch lip on it right here. The overall dimensions of the actual mounting bracket, measuring the overall length, is going to measure 7 and 1/4 inch long. And measuring from this point here to this point here that's going to be 5 and 1/4 of an inch, with the width. Now the overall width or the depth increases to 7 and 1/2 inches with the roller fair lead attached to it. Real quick, I just want to take a look at the mounting bracket whole dimensions. You're going to have these two holes here, now these are going to be separated by 3.15 inches apart on center.

These are going to line up with the holes on the bottom of the winch. Then you're going to have four mounting holes to mount the universal bracket to your ATV. Center on center, going this way, the separation we are going to have is going to measure 6 and 3/8 of an inch. Center on center, between these two holes here, that's going to give us a measurement of 3 and 11/16 of an inch. Go ahead and place our winch back on, here's the two mounting holes I was talking about. That wire is going to come through that roller fair lead just like that, and then you can simply attach the hook. All you have to do is pull out the pin right there, place it over the wire loop, place the pin back through and secure it with the codder 00:03:46 pin. Just place it though the hole, and if you're going to leave it on there I would go ahead and bend that codder 00:03:52 pin over, that way that pin is not going to come disconnected from that hook system. Now when it comes to the rated line pull with a single layer of wire rope around the drum this is rated at 3,000 pounds. The motor is going to be a 12 volt DC 1.2 horsepower permanent magnet motor. This right here is going to be your solenoid. Again, this right here is going to be your rocker switch, it's going to have the double 60/80 amp relays. And then the battery leads are going to be 8 gauge by 6 feet in length. Solenoid is going to attach close to the ATV battery. It's going to feature color coded wiring for an easy installation. Now the line pull at 0 pounds is going to have a power draw at 12 amps, with a line speed of 10 and 1/2 feet per minute. Now with a full load capacity at 3,000 pounds on the winch the power draw is at 130 amps and the line speed is going to be 2.6 feet per minute. Gear ratio is 153 to 1. Braking system is a dynamic brake mechanism. It's going to have the automatic load hold. The dimensions of the winch itself, separated from the mounting bracket-11.8 inches long, 4.3 inches wide, by 4.1 inches tall. And the winch itself is going to weigh about 20 pounds. I think to be exact it is 20.2. That's going to do it for our review of part number BDW15002. This is the Bulldog ATV winch, rated at 3,000 pounds. .
