Bulldog Winch ATV Series

This Powersports ATV recovery winch is designed for light-duty work and recreational applications. It's perfect for your small sport quad 4x4, 2-wheel drive ATV, or snowmobile with a maximum GVW of 1,000 lbs. It includes a handlebar-mounted rocker switch so you can control the winch from the seat of your ATV. The motor, gearbox, and contactor are sealed so you can confidently run your ATV through mud and water. And it includes a dynamic brake, a wire rope and roller fairlead, and a universal mounting channel for installation.

Light-Duty, 1-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch ATV Motor

This winch features a 1-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 2,000 lbs of line pull. The permanent magnet motor offers the same line-pulling power and speed as a series-wound motor of comparable size, but it's lighter and uses less current. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Relay Switch

Bulldog Winch Relay Switch

The power unit contains 60- and 80-amp relay switches that transmit power from the ATV's battery to the winch motor. It has 18" leads that run to the vehicle's battery, 6' leads that run to the winch motor, and 12" leads with quick connects for the handlebar-mounted rocker switch. It will typically be mounted with included hardware under the ATV's front cover or hood near the battery.

Bulldog Winch Relay Switch

The power unit has a weather-resistant seal between the lid and base and rubber seals where the wires enter the box. Both relay switches have an electronic assembly that has been filled with an epoxy pour to create a waterproof seal.

Free-Spooling Clutch

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to power out the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull out the hard plastic knob and rotate it 90 degrees so that the pins on the shaft rest against the catch. To reengage the clutch, rotate the knob 90 degrees and push it back in.

The clutch is driven by a single-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives.

Dynamic Brake

The dynamic brake uses resistance from the winch motor to control line speed. When the winch is pulling the rope in there is no resistance on the drum. As you start to slow the pull with the rocker switch the motor slows the drum's rotation. When the power is stopped the drum does not turn and the load is held in place.

Since there is no physical brake device the winch is lighter and has a smaller profile than winches with a mechanical braking system. This makes it easier to mount in places with limited space available.

Handlebar-Mounted Rocker Switch

Bulldog Winch Handlbar Mounted Shifter

The handlebar-mounted rocker switch lets you operate the winch from the seat of your ATV. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss with quick connects.

There is also a wireless remote kit (BDW20099 - sold separately) that lets you control the winch from up to 100' away.

Wire Rope

Bulldog Winch Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is also recommended for added protection. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back if it breaks by forcing it to the ground.

Bulldog Winch Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically mounts to the included channel or to tabs on a custom mounting plate (sold separately). Bulldog Winch mounting plates - as well as most other aftermarket mounts - include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Bulldog Winch Winch Body

The winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel.

Installation

Bulldog Winch Mounting channel

To install the winch on the front of your vehicle you will need a suitable mounting location. The winch and fairlead may be bolted to the included mounting channel. This mounting channel is a basic L-channel and may not be compatible with your ATV. In most cases you will need to bolt a custom mounting plate (sold separately) to the front framework of your ATV in order to mount the winch and fairlead.

Bulldog Winch relay switch

The power unit will typically mount under the front cover or hood near the battery. You will need to drill 2 small holes in the mounting surface to secure the unit with the included hardware. Connect the 18" leads to your vehicle's battery and run the 6' leads to the winch terminals. Any excess wiring can be neatly tucked around the engine and secured with zip ties (not included).

Bulldog Winch handlebar mounted rocker switch

You can mount the rocker switch on either handlebar but it's typically mounted near the brake on the handlebar opposite the throttle. This allows you to control the winch and accelerate the ATV at the same time. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss that connects to the contactor with built-in quick connects.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer2,0006-1/2
2nd Layer1,63014
3rd Layer1,38023-1/2
4th Layer1,19035
5th Layer1,05047
6th Layer94050

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20023 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (BDW20051 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20006 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 7-piece rigging kit (BDW20034 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - ATV - UTV Winch - BDW15001 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number BDW 15001. This is the Bulldog ATV Winch. It's going to come with a handlebar-mounted rocker switch that's going to let you control the line-in and line-out. It easily mounts to your handlebars with the included assembly bracket here with all of the hardware on there. Everything that you need is provided for an installation. The ATV winch is going to be designed for recreation and work duty applications. It's going to feature a one-horse power permanent magnet motor that's going to deliver quick, safe line pulling.

It's going to offer a planetary gear train. Again that handlebar-mounted rocker switch is great to have. That's going to allow you to control the winch from the seat of your ATV. The mechanism right here on the side, this is going to be the free-spool clutch knob that's going to ensure fast cable payout. When it comes to the cable, very strong and very durable. That's going to be a 5/32nds of an inch diameter, and the overall length is going to measure 50 feet long. It's going to include the last hook here on the end with the hand-saver strap, bright red color, so it's highly visible. The winch does come with the universal mounting bracket and a four-way Roller Fairlead.

The winch when it's separated by itself, this is going to give us measurements of 11.2 inches long by 4.1 inches wide by 4.1 inches tall. When the winch is mounted onto the universal mounting bracket, the overall height does increase to 4-1/4 of an inch, but here at the bracket, you can see the winch is going to attach with two bolt holes. All of the hardware is provided, and then the bracket is going to attach to your ATV with four bolt holes. Really quick, I want to go over some measurements regarding those hole locations. Measuring this direction, center on center, this is going to give us a measurement of 6-3/8ths of an inch. Measuring this direction, center-on-center, these holes are going to measure 3-11/16th of an inch separation between the two. The bracket itself, this is going to give us an overall measurement of 7-1/4 inch long, 5-1/4 inch wide, not including the Fairlead, and 2-1/2 inches tall from the base to the top of this portion here.

With the Fairlead attached, that's going to extend the measurement to about 7-1/2 inches. Once you have the winch bolted on to the universal mounting bracket, that's going to be these two holes here, they are going to be separated by 3.15 inches on center. The hook is going to come through the Fairlead here. The Fairlead is nice. This is going to protect the wire rope from damage by reducing the strain and rubbing. This right here is going to be your solenoid. This is going to attach close to the ATV battery, and it has color-coded wiring for an easy installation.

The switch is going to feature double 60-80 amp relays, and the battery leads on the system are going to be 8-gauge by 6-feet long. Again, it's going to come with that universal mounting bracket and all necessary hardware. The rated line pull of the winch with the single layer of wire of rope around the drum is rated at 2,000 pounds. Again, the motor is a 12-volt DC one-horse power permanent magnet motor. The line pull at 0 pounds is going to have a line speed of 10-1/2 feet per minute. Power draws at 8 amps with a line pull with a 2000 pound load on it, the power draws 120 amps and a line speed of 2.9 feet per minute. Gear ratio on this system is 153 to 1. When it comes to the braking, that's going to be a dynamic brake system, which is going to have a automatic load hold, and the weight of the winch itself is about 19.4 pounds. That's going to do it for our review of part number BDW 15001. It's also going to come with some detailed instructions here in the manual. It's going to walk you through everything you're going to need to know about the winch. Again, this is the Bulldog ATV Winch, rated at 2000 pounds. .

I can't really rate the product yet because I just installed it, but it seems to be working just fine. This five-star rating is for the customer service of the company though. I got a phone message on the Saturday following when I ordered it. The company called to let me know that the winch I ordered wasn't available but they had another, comparable one in stock they could send me. They followed up with an email. I responded to the email saying that I would like the replacement and go ahead and make the change. I got a response within a couple of hours and the product was in the mail Monday morning. The winch is installed and it seems to work. 578328

Found the exact winch i needed looking at the info on the website. Made one phone call to see if it could reach me in time, as I was totally amazed that I actually received the winch the next day! Installed in very short time in my enclosed cargo trailer. It works great, as advertised. Still scratching my head over ordering one day & by the next afternoon, in another state, I received & installed it. 205730
